Mass Protest in Okene Over Police Cruel
Treatment of Residents
Men, women, young and old in Kogi Central Senatorial
District, on Thursday morning, took to the streets of Okene
with placards in protest over alleged ill treatment of
residents by the Nigerian Police Force.
The action which was spearheaded by workers in the district
put commuters plying the road to a halt.
One of the protesters who claimed anonymity told
EbiraReporters that since two policemen were gunned down
by armed robbers, the residents have known no peace.
“They arrest our people unlawfully, punish our youths
unnecessarily and threaten our businesses by firing shots
on the air every day, thereby scaring people away”, he said.
Pointing out the effect of the alleged ill treatment, he added
that the policemen forcefully stopped a general goods trade
fair which supposed to take place from August 22 nd –
September 1st in Okene.
“We are on our way to the King’s palace to table our
grievances before him. He needs to call them to order”,
concluded.
Prior to this movement, there have been series of call and
appeal by individuals and forums for a stop in the unlawful
arrest and harassments of residents in Okene by the Police.
