I know someone in a similar situation, with an irresponsible husband, he couldn't keep a job cos of his lack of sense of responsibility. The woman takes care of the family finances plus home care. Whenever it's time to pay the rent he leaves the house for her and the kids, knowing fully well she'll pay, after she has paid he'll come back. Beats her even in public, even in their Children's school. Took her car from her and use it to carry concubines about. Uses force to take her salary from her. To top it off went to bring a second wife to the house. And this is a man that claims to be a religious leader o. Thank God she is already on the divorce processing, the useless man is now coming with his family members to beg her. Telling her to stay cos of her children.

They'll be telling women to stay in bondage in the guise of marriage. Better to be single and happy than married and suffering in every aspect.

Ok, I never knew women propose to themselves on the man's behalf or invite his family on his behalf then use rope to drag him to the aisle.
It is wanting to eat their cake and have it, they want to gallivant around while having a maid at home to care for their needs. Some will spend money on concubines outside while their family suffers. But sadly when the consequences of their actions come, the wife suffers for it too. In this age of HIV/AIDs, hepatitis and other STIs, some women come down with cervical cancer later in life as a result of having a cheat as a husband.

When he is sick and frail, all his concubines would disappear leaving the woman he has grossly disrespected to go about caring for him.

I bet the man that infected his wife and new born baby with HIV/AIDs, was also going about justifying cheating, spending his money on concubines rather than his family, busy feeling like Boss.

The sad part was the woman and her baby died while he still lives. Women are suffering walahi.
I don't know how women are considered weaker, while being conditioned to endure physical, emotional, psychological pain all in the name of being married.

Very interesting thread.
I think all these is influenced by the Society, upbringing and most importantly the people involved.
When a man helps his wife with domestic chores in whatever form it might be, he is perceived as a woma. wrapper or some people will even say he has been bewitched.
Some people don't let their male children cook, wash plates, sweep or even fetch water, just eat and go and start playing football or go play in a neighbours house while his sisters do the chores, so he would naturally see helping out his wife with chores as beneath him.

Like there was this male neighbour of mine in the face-me- I slap you, I lived in school. I always feel nauseated when he is having a call with his gf, like if he is washing his clothes, he would be telling her 'you know what I'm doing is your job', or how he can't wait to be married, so he wouldn't have to do all these anymore (like he couldn't wait to have his own personal slave to clean up after him and cook for him), and this is someone always making noise about never marrying a liability, how his wife must bring something to the table yet he is already dreaming of putting his own chores on her shoulders.

About the bride price stuff, in as much as I see no reason for it since some people use this as an excuse to maltreat their wives. But I say, it really doesn't matter as it depends more on the individuals involved.
I have a very close family friend, the bride's wife charged the groom's family well, the anchors of the wedding also did their own plus we had to travel a bit far for the wedding but the man treats his wife like an egg. He is a medical Dr so has a busy job but whenever he is around they do everything together, he can pound yam while she makes the soup. You will wish to go and get married when around them. They are like two friends living together. And the wife doesn't even have a job yet.

And there is another couple (I've said this story before on here), the wife only took the Holy Book from him and they didn't have any flamboyant wedding.
The woman has 2 kids, does all the house chores and still contributes to the family's finance. She resumes 7:30 am to work while the husband resumes, 9-10am. She was late for work and asked the husband to help in feeding their baby while she finishes up other chores and her dressing, the man asked her if he looks like a nanny husband and refused to feed his own baby like this will reduce his manliness. At the end of the day, the Proprietor of the school noticing the woman's countenance was the one that fed the child.

That is the terrible mentality some men have. So even if you get married to such men without bride price, he might only see the wife like someone pointed out as a.

If the man had not rubbished and made the wife so useless before the silly har.lot, she will not have the audacity to call him to come and face his wife. I think it depends a lot on the parents and environment too. Yorubas can spoil name ehn, all those grandmas I never knew Dhikrullah was Sikiru, such a beautiful name, but if the parents call the child with the right pronunciation, it will influence others to call it the right way. A man named his daughter 'KaoKab' not sure of the spelling or meaning, that day, the old mamas started calling the baby 'Kabukabu', the father didn't allow them though, if you can't pronounce it right then use her yoruba name.
I have a small cousin named 'Rahmat', if you don't pronounce her name well, maybe like call her 'Ramota', she doesn't care who you are, she will not answer, if she is in a good mood, she'll correct.

It depends on upbringing too, I have been reading real novels since I was about 7. My parents present us with books as gift, so I fell in love with reading novels early. But some people can't read novels to save their life. Even those in art class will start looking for someone to read and explain in detail for them.
Interests differ, some would rather watch films and other hobbies.

Guys do read novels too though. I can't say which gender does that more.
