Lagos and Rivers State for example may have a huge cooperate tax base to take advantage of, but where are they going to get cement from? where would they lumber from? where would they get steel from? Other states that have these natural resources can impose their own taxes of which Lagos and Rivers we used as examples would have to pay when they need these materials. The equation tends to balance itself as the forces of free market economics come in to play. Let’s get a way from this covetous mind set, God had blessed every state in Nigeria with abundant resources, the governors just have to look inwards, be resourceful to harness those resources.

Let's see it this way sir. You're a producer of chocolate bars and your corporate office is in Lagos due to nearness to the market. However, your production plant is in Ondo state due to proximity to raw material and cheap labour.

The scenario painted above is exactly what happens in the case of IOC companies. Let's now ask ourselves if it is right for the company who situated its headquarters in Lagos for strategic reasons should pay tax to Ondo state because their production factory and raw materials comes from there or they should pay tax to the state that houses their corporate presence.

In my opinion, Ondo state can only lay claim to tenament rate and the income tax of those workers within her territory while Lagos have every right to collect tax on whatever the company declared as profit because that's where the market is.

To buttress this point, companies in Lagos whose staff live in Ibafo, Mowe, Agbara and other Ogun state communities but journey down to Lagos everyday to work, those companies do not pay income tax of those employees to Lagos state government. I know this for a fact. They only pay income tax of those who live in Lagos to the Lagos state government and this has been on for a very long time. This same argument goes for the case of the IOCs. They're only entitle to pay income tax of their staffs who work on the upstream or downstream to their state of residence and nothing else. In as much as their head office continue to remain in Lagos, it is 100% legal for them to pay their taxes to Lagos state government.

good with this write up if they have to push for this according to DIRI delta willstill earn low because the majority of the taxwill be pay to Lagos like cooperate taxe and most of the workers now leave in Lagos .. I think the only wayout is that the two government should meet one on one and agree on a sharing pattern since the tax involve the two communities

If your parents had invested heavily in you, to see you through primary and university education and you become a professor, it is your responsibility to give back to your parents for as long as they live. even if am a professor today and I know my parent invested on me that cant make a fool to the extent of giving them all my salary every month for them to give me what they like the best I can do for them to appreciate them for their investment on me is to set aside 30 percent of my income for them every month so that I can put the remaining 70 percent to use for myself and my immediate family .... since government collect import duties from the port in Lagos alone which no one dispute so why are you dragging the VAT with the state

I don't agree that the FG alone should collect VAT, but we have to be fair to other states who did not enjoy the kind of investments that FG made in states like Lagos and Rivers. The status of Lagos as a commercial city is due mainly to investments by FG when Lagos was the federal capital....the roads, sea ports, airport, headquarters of industries/companies, embassies, etc. So LASG alone cannot pretend to be the brain behind the commercial activity and transactions that generate VAT in the state. They already have PAYE tax to themselves.
VAT should be shared between states and FG.

let relate this to a family member , let say you are first born so you enjoy some benefit from your parent because they are active employed when you are born compare to your siblings, along the line you begin to fends for your siblings there will come a time when you will stop

The only thing wrong with the union is that the states in the north are not willing to look inwards and tap into their strength for the improvement of the lives of its people. They want to keep reaping where they didn't sow.

To the news , this is a test of resource control and true federalism. Technically, Rivers State has kicked off the process without waiting for the divisive federal government. I think another state should challenge federal policing, while another drags the FG to court to challenge why it collects the proceeds from resources in its domain.

Perhaps if this FG is reluctant to do the needful, states will apply legal means to get it to restructure the country. This is the best way to get an irresponsible government to do what it is supposed to do, not calling for secession.

Also, if a governor cannot generate revenue for his state, he should step aside. Governance should be about competition and it should be left for smart people who have outside-the-box thinking dexterity, not for nonentities who want to lazy about and loot scarce resources.

until we start to dey deny every state their monthly allocation .... I mean on earth no human that want something good to come out from his kid and still give them upkeeping money at the age of fifty years ..... let all state look into their comparative advantage and invest massively on such to generate funds mainly for the state ... imagine a litter of cow milk is 350 naira ... but we are,not ready for that discussion .... by the time every state only depend on what they generate then Nigeria as a country will know where we are goin
