Health / Africa: Way Forward With Excessive Sugar Consumption by Hearme(m): 3:28pm On Apr 26, 2018 |
In March 2015, the World Health Organization (WHO) published a recommendation that, in order to avoid a negative impact on health, people should obtain no more than 10% of their daily calorie intake from free sugars. Over-consumption of sugar has been implicated in the occurrence of obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, dementia and tooth decay - all of which are on the rise in Africa. South Africans consume the largest amount of sugar in Africa. They consume between 12 and 24 teaspoons of sugar per day - four to eight teaspoons are from sugar sweetened beverages - which is above the WHO guideline of a total limit of 6 teaspoons of sugar per day. Legislation on sugar tax by the South African government which was effected in April of 2017 was targeted at curbing the rising rates of obesity, diabetes and heart related diseases. South Africa follows the footsteps of Mexico, France, Hungary and the state of New York in the USA that have pioneered the strategy. The sugar tax by South Africa is one of the ambitious strategies to reduce obesity by 10% by 2020 and includes other legislation such as the salt reduction legislation, trans-fat regulations and stricter label and advertising regulations. http://firstclass-health.com/ |

Health / Sugar: Should We Stop It Now Or Wait For The Sour End? by Hearme(m): 7:30pm On Apr 06, 2018 |
Children love sweet things. Almost every child gets excited when they hear that something sweet is coming their way. Children do not possess the information or judgment to know that eating sweet things may be enjoyable but excessive sugar consumption is not good for their health. Unfortunately, many adults are aware of all the information available about the dangers of excessive sugar consumption but have not changed the way that they consume sugar. Free sugars is so ubiquitous in foods and drinks that avoiding excessive sugar consumption cannot happen unconsciously. It takes vigilance and care to monitor what is being consumed daily to be able to achieve healthy levels of sugar consumption. With education and good discipline, over time, the World Health Organisation (WHO) recommended limit for daily free sugar intake can be achieved. This fight back on sugar intake is not as optional as it may appear because the rate of obesity-related illnesses is on the rise and excessive sugar is implicated in the rise of obesity. One mark of a responsible generation is how well they set up the next generation to succeed. As one of the most informed generations of all time, it will be criminal if we do not intervene to save the next generation from obesity-related illnesses. This edition of First Class Health provides a good insight into the damage that excessive sugar intake can cause and how changes in lifestyle can avert ill health. The one message that comes through clearly is that the story needs to be rewritten; sugar intake has to be reduced to healthy levels as there is nothing sweet about excessive sugar consumption http://firstclass-health.com/ |
Health / Re: Food For Thought: Are You Paying Too Much For A Delicious Meal by Hearme(m): 5:47pm On Sep 28, 2017 |
Highlight In 2010, an estimated 1.65 million cardiovascular deaths worldwide – or 1 out of every 10 cardiovascular deaths—were attributed to salt consumption above the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended intake of 5g per day. About 80% of such deaths occur in low and middle-income countries More details at http://firstclass-health.com |
Health / Food For Thought: Are You Paying Too Much For A Delicious Meal by Hearme(m): 3:36pm On Sep 28, 2017 |
Investing in food It may come as a surprise to you that over your life time, whether you think about it or not, you are spending your money on investments that will make some kind of return (negative or positive) in the future. For example, the money spent on education is usually expected to make a positive return in increased earning potential, access to knowledge and the tools and opportunity to make a difference in the world. The money spent on medicines is expected to bring an increase in life expectancy and increase in quality of life. So how about the food that we eat? Can money spent on food be seen as an investment? I suppose food does not immediately appear to be an investment as it is a necessity and a basic requirement to live so you do not have a choice as to whether you should ‘invest’ or not. However, while you cannot survive without food, you can choose which food to eat and which not to eat. In addition, there is clear evidence that food can play a part in improving or reducing quality of health. This means that food can affect length of life and quality of life. Looking at food from this perspective, it certainly qualifies as an investment as money spent today can affect an outcome in the future. Making wise investments As mentioned earlier, once the amount of money to be spent on an acquisition is known, the second question is usually whether the buyer is paying too much. The cost of food can vary from place to place, however, one thing is certain - if that food contributes to the consumption of excessive dietary salt, that food is costing too much. Research has shown that excess salt intake (over 5g of salt per day) contributes to a lot of health problems in the future, from high blood pressure to kidney problems. No matter how delicious the food may taste at the time of consumption, I think most people will accept that it is not worth losing their health or losing extended time with their children/grandchildren. Steps to change So, are you paying too much for your delicious meal? Are you making gains now for potentially big loses in the future? You can reduce the price that you will pay for that food by beginning to cut down on your salt intake. A first step may be to eliminate salt from the dining table and to have your cooked meals without adding table salt. A subsequent step can be to avoid buying processed foods with high salt content and to be aware of the salt content in the snacks that you eat. You can then graduate to a place where salt is eliminated from your list of ingredients, regardless of what you are cooking. By taking some of these steps, you will be investing in a healthier future for yourself and your family. You will be able to look back in years to come and hopefully reach the conclusion that health benefits gained by far justifies the changes that you made to the salt content of your diet. http://firstclass-health.com/digital-magazine-august-2017/ This volume is on The Ills of excess dieatary salt. OP should modify his title to read the actual name of the school. This is because, Nigerian Military School (NMS) is a secondary school and it is the only one in Nigeria located in Zaria. |

pocohantas: I think its a joke if not you were caught a day after delivery tasting something yet you can't say Thank you to your wife that did not pour hot water on you. This must be a joke but if it is culture I am hearing it for the first time. In another view, your wife grew up telling mummy, thank you for the meal so after she prepared the meal and her mummy was there she rewined back to the days that it was disrespect not to say thank you to mummy. I think it should be to your wife and probably say thank you to your Mother in law for joining you in enjoying the meal. |

The tongue is very powerful I somehow feel that after achieving a great feat last year they should not have brought there target so low. The avoiding relegation talk is what is coming into play for them now. The board, manager and players lost the believe that won them the championship and changed their winning believe to strugglers. I hope the new coach will infuse confidence and believe in them again. I will really like to see them remain in the league. LEARN THE LESSONS |

Health / Smoking And How It Contributes To Cardiovascular And Metabolic Diseases by Hearme(m): 12:35pm On Jan 10, 2017 |
Consumption of tobacco is one of the leading causes of avoidable death globally. The consumption rate of tobacco increases by 4% per annum. About 1 billion people, which is nearly 15% of the world’s population in 2016, are cigarettes smokers, with men accounting for 800 million of these smokers. Although the prevalence rate of tobacco smoking in Africa is only 14%, which is low compared to the Americas (23%) and the Eastern Mediterranean (31%), its growth is the highest in the world. Mozambique, for example has seen a 220% growth in cigarette consumption over the past 16 years. The 2011 World Health Organization (WHO) report on the Global Tobacco Epidemic highlighted that tobacco use kills nearly 6 million people worldwide each year. It is estimated that by the year 2025, three times as many people (18 million) will die annually from smoking-related diseases. More than 80% of these preventable deaths are predicted to occur in low and middle income countries, where health facilities and services are inadequately equipped to cope with the demands presented by smoking related illnesses.
