Armed men have stormed a mosque in Burkina Faso as worshippers were praying inside, killing more than a dozen people and sending residents fleeing, security sources said.

Almost 500,000 people have fled their homes because of the violence, according to the United Nations refugee agency, which has warned of a humanitarian crisis affecting 1.5 million people. Meanwhile, Burkina Faso's defence and
security forces are badly equipped, poorly trained and have proven unable to put a halt to the increasing violence. France has a force of 200 in the country but also intervenes
frequently as part of its regional Barkhane operations.
