Though, It's an old news. I just wanted to share. 2010. Leadership, influence and a winning mentality are all things Chuks Aneke is trying to instill into his game, and who better to learn from than former Club captain Patrick Vieira? The 17-year-old has shone for the Reserves this season, and that in part could be down to his reading of the self-titled autobiography written by the Frenchman. Though a more attack-minded player than Vieira, Aneke is keen to be like him in everything he does. He wants the book to help improve him both as a player and also on a personal level away from the pitch. “He was such a winner and I want to take that from the book and put it into my game. I want to be a winner like him,” Aneke told Arsenal.com. “I’ve learnt a lot [from reading the book]. To try and win at everything I do on and off the pitch. To try and lead and be more of a presence on the pitch because he was such a presence when he was on the field. “I look up to him very much. He was the captain of this Club and he won titles. That’s something I aspire to. He was one of my idols as a kid." Though Aneke joined the Club in 2001, Vieira had left for Juventus by the time he was old enough to mingle with the senior players. This means the duo’s only meeting came when a youthful Aneke waited outside Highbury for a glimpse at his hero. “I met him once when I was about eight or nine. He won’t remember, I don’t even really remember myself,” he laughed. “I saw him after a game against Sunderland at the old Highbury and that was the only time I met him. He walked straight past me – it was very daunting to see someone like him at that age.” Source: http://www.arsenal.com/news/news-archive/aneke-i-m-taking-inspiration-from-vieira [img][/img]

Nwankwo Kanu came on over the weekend and scored the winner in Portsmouth's 1-0 win over Barnsley at Fratton Park on Saturday and first-team coach Ian Woan has tagged the former Nigeria captain Nwankwo Kanu as a magician. "There were a few raised eyebrows from the fans (when we brought him on), but you want your subs to make an impact. He's an absolute magician. You see him day in, day out on the training pitch and some of the things he does with the ball are phenomenal. He's a top, top professional given where he has played and the enthusiasm he gives us every week in training," the coach said. Woan added: "His legs can't carry him for 90 minutes sometimes now. But in a game that is crying out for someone to get hold of it, you throw the big fella on and he is a magician. "You can't get the ball off him. People get to the stage where they don't want to go and challenge him. He embarrasses you. The whole stand starts cheering, he does the step-overs - you know they're coming but you can't do anything about it. We just didn't have that and he was perfect for the situation," Woan stated. On picking up a second straight clean sheet, Woan added: "I think it's a major plus for us. We have struggled to keep clean sheets. "The back-line in the last two games has been the same. That has made a big difference. We've done a lot of work with them on the training field. Continuity is a big thing with the back four. You need to know what everyone is doing. When you pick the same back four, it makes a big difference to them." [img][/img] Source: http://www.kickoff.com/news/20390/portsmouth-coach-hails-magician-nwankwo-kanu.php

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has defended the decision to sign teenager Jon Toral from Barcelona's youth academy. Barca president Sandro Rosell described Arsenal's capture of the 16-year-old midfielder for a fee reportedly worth about £296,000 as "a little immoral". But Wenger said: "You forget that this boy is English. He has an English passport, his mother is from England. "We have done what just is legal. Plenty of players leave us under exactly the same rule." Toral, who was free to sign with any team, is set to join the Gunners in the summer. If you go in the academy of Barcelona and you look where all the players come from, come back to me and we can talk about it Arsene Wenger He follows a number of players who have made the move to north London from Barcelona's famed La Masia youth academy. As well as club captain Cesc Fabregas, Arsenal have, in the past, signed Fran Merida - now at Atletico Madrid - and 18-year-old defender Ignasi Miguel, who made his first-team debut in the FA Cup tie at Leyton Orient last Sunday. Wenger added: "I love Barcelona, I love Catalonia. I have nothing against them, but when a player who is half English and Spanish wants to join us, why should we turn him down if it's all legal? "If we have done something illegal, I will say 'sorry, my boy, we cannot do it'. "If you go in the academy of Barcelona and you look where all the players come from, come back to me and we can talk about it." The agent who engineered Toral's move is Pere Guardiola, brother of Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola, who has signed a one-year contract extension. Dan Shittu has admitted he felt nervous about making his first appearance since returning to QPR. The defender was given a starting place for Rangers' home win against Ipswich. "I knew it was an important game for me, playing at home in front of those fans who have supported me all these years," said Shittu. "I was a bit nervous before the game because I knew those fans were expecting me to do what I usually do. I didn't want to let them down." Shittu, 30, made 182 appearances for QPR between 2001 and 2006, establishing himself as a crowd favourite at Loftus Road. The manager put a lot of trust in me. It was a big game for us and I'm happy I was able to repay him Dan Shittu He was sold to Watford for £1.6m and later played for Bolton and Millwall before rejoining the west London club in January on a six-month deal. After impressing in recent reserve matches, the Nigeria international was drafted in for Tuesday's game along with fellow centre-back Fitz Hall. It meant Matt Connolly and Kaspars Gorkss missed out, despite the Championship leaders boasting the division's best defensive record. Rangers had conceded only 20 league goals this season and had kept an unrivalled 18 clean sheets prior to Tuesday's 2-0 victory. Shittu added: "The manager put a lot of trust in me. It was a big game for us and I'm happy I was able to repay him." [img][/img] Source: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/teams/q/qpr/9405633.stm

Political leaders in the North have been urged to give maximum support to the candidature of President Goodluck Jonathan on the platform of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) as a factor of justice and reciprocation of the contributions of the Niger Delta, where the President hails from, to national unity and economic viability of the country. While describing the Niger Delta as the mainstay of Nigeria’s economy and political ally of the North without commensurate political opportunity, Minister of Information and Communication, Labaran Maku, while speaking with journalists in Lokoja, Kogi State capital during the President Goodluck Jonathan campaign rally on Monday said rather than heat up the polity, northern elders should urge northern candidates to step down for President Jonathan in recognition of the contributions of his region to national development and the continued existence of Nigeria as a nation. “Niger Delta region, which since about 1960 has been contributing more than 90 per cent of national income; if you go to Niger Delta today, they cannot fish because their rivers are polluted; they cannot go to farm because their environment is polluted. Now they have suffered this pollution and are contributing more than 90 per cent of national income; the salaries you pay in your primary schools teacher and civil servants in Kogi is from Niger Delta. The salaries that are paid all over the North; in all our schools, our teachers, our civil servants, our traditional rulers, our community leaders are from Niger Delta. What we use to fire development in all the services, 90 per cent is from the Nigeria Delta; if Niger Delta oil stops flowing today, no northern state, with exception of Kano would be able to pay salary for two months and we are saying that their son cannot rule Nigeria or what? http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/maku-why-north-should-support-jonathan/86674/ |
A semblance of hell broke loose Tuesday in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital as members of rival political parties violently attacked each other, destroying campaign bill boards and inflicted heavy bodily harm on rival party members on a day President Goodluck Jonathan storm the capital for his presidential campaign. Narrating the ordeal of members of the ACPN in the hands of the attacking members of the ruling party, PDP, in Ilorin Tuesday, the Organising Secretary of ACPN in Kwara State, Suleimon Jabata said the fate of the attacked members of the party who are on danger list still hang in the balance with the arm of one them chopped off, adding that the other members who sustained injuries are still being checked for the degree of their injuries to be ascertained. Democratic Peoples Party (DPP) in the state condemned the pulling down of the bill boards of the governorship candidate of the party for April general election, Hon. Gbenga Olawepo by people believed to be suspected thugs in the state. In a statement issued in Ilorin and signed by the state chairman of the party, Alhaji Abidoun Usman, the party said such attitude portends a serious danger to the enthronement of democracy in the country. According to him, “ It is disheartening that inspite of President Goodluck Jonathan’s commitment to healthy democracy in Nigeria, some people have continued to constitute a cog in the wheel of progress of the nation by embarking on action that may likely cause political unrest in the country.” Usman stated that, the people irrespective of their political parties should be able to pursue their political campaigns without recourse to the damaging of ones posters or pulling down the bill boards of the opponents as this would go a long way to usher-in good governance and allow credible leaders to emerge without rancour. He said “ Thugs numbering about 15 drove into our party secretariat at 25, Irepodun street, Adewole Estate, Ilorin at about 8.00 a.m in a blue Lite-Ace bus and chased away the security guards after which they destroyed and carted away our bill boards especially that of our governorship candidate for this April elections in the state” Usman added ” not satisfied with this, they moved round the Ilorin metropolis and pulled down all the bill boards belonging to DPP and this is uncalled for in view of the recent security meeting held with the state police command on how to ensure peaceful conduct of campaigns in the state for this elections”. He stressed that, this latest action has been brought to the notice of the affected security agencies in the state in order to curtail the activities of the suspected thugs before it turns into another thing in the state. While appealing to the members of the party in the state to remain calm , Usman said that, the appropriate authorities concern have been informed about the action . He therefore called on the state police command and other affected security agencies in the state to address the issue without further delay in order to ensure the peaceful conduct of the forthcoming general elections in the state. Reacting, the state government through the chief press secretary to the governor said “The alleged attack by some political parties and pulling down of their bill boards was an outright falsehood. The state today hosted Mr President on his campaign rally and to our dismay, many of the party supporters wearing aso ebi were attacked while buses carrying the party supporters who have PDP posters on their vehicles were also attacked. Those alleging these were the same people attacking our innocent supporters when returning from the rally. “The bill board of three of our aspirants including the candidate, Abdulfatah Ahmad, Rasaki Anumwa and Issa Bio Ibrahim were not only torn off, but pulled down at Adeta round about and Wahab Folawiyo road, Pakata area among others. Equally, we have appealed to security operatives in the state to bring to book the perpertrator of this dastardly act. As a goverment we have laboured so much to bring development to our state in the last eight years, we would not tolerate any disgruntuled elements to take the state back to the dark era which we have wished away all in the name of playing politics,” he concluded. Sunday will not be forgotten in a hurry in Abeokuta, Ogun state capital as suspected dare devil cult groups shot sporadically in the town, killing no fewer than 10 people in an operation that lasted for close to three hours. This came as two people were killed in a clash between the police and protesters at Danbatta town in Kano over an alleged murder of a suspect by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of the area. The suspect who was said to be in police detention was alleged to have been beaten to death by the DPO. Trouble started when his relatives went to see him and were stunned to find him lying lifeless. The last appears not to have been heard of the Jos crises as no fewer than 18 people were gruesomely killed in their sleep by suspected Fulani assailants in a pre-dawn attack on Bere village of Fan District, a border community in Barkin Ladi and Mangu local government areas of Plateau State. The leader of the suspected marauders, one Musa Haruna, was however also killed before he could escape during the dawn raid. Several other residents of Bere village also sustained serious injuries and are currently receiving treatment at the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) and Barkin Ladi General Hospital Chairman of Barkin-Ladi local government council, Dr. Fom Pam Dakwat, told newsmen Tuesday that the people were attacked with dangerous weapons including sophisticated guns, cutlasses, and bow-and-arrow. He said 14 of the victims died on the spot while four others died on their way to the hospital, adding that the number of casualty would have been more but for the efforts of the youths of the area who mobilized and resisted the assailants from causing further havoc and even killed the leader of the group. Also confirming the casualty figure, the state Police Command in a statement signed by its Public Relations Officer, Mr Jacob Apev, said seven people were injured, one house burnt and 19 cows rustled in the attack, adding that on receipt of the information, security operatives moved to the scene. Apev appealed to the people of the state to remain calm and be law-abiding, and also help with any useful information that could assist the Police, as they are doing everything possible to forestall future occurrence. Meanwhile, people from Jos town and other neighbouring communities have been trooping to the village to sympathize with the villagers, who have refused to be consoled. Unconfirmed sources told our reporter that one of the seven victims that got to JUTH later died, as the remaining six are still on danger list. After a lot of dilly-dallying and doubt, the much-talked about loan deal for the InterMilan duo of Nigerian-born midfielder, Joel Chukwuma Obi and Flying Eagles star at the Egypt 2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup, Obiorah Nwankwo with Serie A rivals, AC Parma has finally pulled off. Although observers had reckoned up till last weekend that Obiorah would stay put at The San Siro, Inter have announced that the 19-year-old fair-skinned star will immediately move to Parma for remainder of the season in a co-ownership deal, but Obi will stay with the Italian and European champions for the time being before also moving on a similar arrangement. Obiorah, who joined Inter after a stillborn spell with Real Murcia of Spain, earlier had stints at ECO FC of Lagos, Heartland International of Owerri and Wikki Tourist of Bauchi. The fair-skinned Rwanda 2009 African Youth Championship revelation made his first team debut for Inter in the UEFA Champions League, coming in as a 53rd minute sub for Ghana’s Sulley Ally Muntari and went on to make five more appearances for the Nerrazzuri. On the other hand, Joel Obi, who plays from the left of midfield, has been at Inter since he left Nigeria five years ago and made his first team debut in a Serie A game against Cagliari in October 2010, coming in for Philippe Coutinho on 66 minutes. He has since made seven Serie A appearances, while also putting in one Coppa Italia and one Champions League outings for the European champions. The official statement from Inter read in part: "Internazionale would like to convey the outcome of some of the transfer deals that were concluded on the final day of the January transfer window. “Nwankwo Obiorah, Nigerian midfielder, born in 1991, 5 official appearances with the Nerazzurri, has been signed in co-ownership by Parma, where the player will spend the rest of the season on loan, with the transferee club holding an option to buy the remainder of the player’s registration. “Joel Obi, Nigerian midfielder, born in 1991, has also been signed in co-ownership by Parma, but the player will remain with Leonardo’s team for the duration of this season.” http://www.brila-fm.net/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=5664:obiorah-joins-parma-obi-on-hold&catid=1:latest-news&Itemid=76 Source^^^^^ |

Swindon Town have completed the signing of Spurs forward Jon Obika on loan until the end of the season. Obika, 20, has curtailed a similar loan spell at Peterborough to join the struggling Robins. Swindon boss Danny Wilson said last week he was hopeful of concluding a deal for Obika. "He's still Peterborough's player this moment in time but we're hopeful we'll have an addition next week some stage," Wilson told BBC Wiltshire on Friday. He added: "It's not done and dusted as he's still technically a Peterborough player." Obika played for Spurs in their UEFA Cup campaign during the 2008/09 season but since then has spent time on loan with Millwall and Yeovil (twice). He arrived at London Road four weeks ago having had a four month spell at Crystal Palace at the start of this season. Obika scored 11 goals in two spells with Yeovil Source, http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/teams/s/swindon_town/9387806.stm |
