Names like Ogbonna, Agwu, Uzor and Chima are still mostly used in freetown. |

You have also spoken about Lagos or anywhere in the West as unsafe for the Easterners to hold a meeting. Nobody can tell when life will be lost, but I think, speaking the minds of entire people of Western Nigeria and Mid-Western Nigeria, that if anybody can at this stage take the life of an Ibo man or an Easterner, or if any outstanding Eastern loses his life by the act of someone else, the whole of the Western Region and the Mid-Western Region will take it as the end of Nigeria. I can give that assurance on behalf of Western Nigeria and Lagos." Did Awo keep his promise? Instead He became the vice to Gowon. Atleast we all knew why. Smart my foot!!!! |

Nigerian teenagers Obiora Nwankwo and Joel Obi have are to join Parma from Inter Milan. Nwankwo, 19, a promising junior international who can play in midfield and at centreback, has been signed to a co-ownership deal. He leaves immediately to spend the next six months on loan with Parma having the option of buying out the remainder of his registration at the end of the season. Countryman Joel, also 19, similarly signed on a co-ownership deal, but will remain at Inter Milan for the rest of the season. Obiorah, who joined Inter from Spanish club Real Murcia after short spells each at Nigerian clubs Heartland and Wikki Tourists, made his first team debut in the UEFA Champions League, coming in as a 53rd minute sub for Sulley Muntari and has gone on to make 5 more appearances for the Nerrazzuri. He has represented Nigeria at Under-17 and Under-20 levels. Left midfielder Obi, has been at Inter since leaving Nigeria and made his first team debut in a Serie A game against Cagliari in October 2010, coming in for Philippe Coutinho on 66 minutes. He has gone on to make 7 Serie A appearances, one Coppa Italia and one Champions League for the European champions. http://www.kickoff.com/news/20020/obiorah-nwankwo-joel-obi-leave-inter-for-parma.php |
Everton striker Victor Anichebe and Inter Milan midfielder Joel Obi have been called up to the Nigeria squad. Anichebe will replace Newcastle's Shola Ameobi, who has been ruled out with cheekbone injury, while Obi comes in for Heartland midfielder Ikechukwu Ibenegbu. Nigeria coach Samson Siasia said on his Twitter feed that Ibenegbu is out with an injury. "Joel Obi will replace Ikechukwu Ibenegbu in the team. Ibenegbu is injured," Siasia tweeted on Friday night. That injury is said to be a muscle tear. This will be the first international call up for the highly regarded Inter youngster, who does not turn 20 until May. http://www.kickoff.com/news/20093/victor-anichebe-joel-obi-in-for-nigeria.php |
Victor Obinna followed up his weekend hat-trick with two goals as West Ham beat Blackpool to move off the foot of the Premier League table. Keeper Richard Kingson's blunder gifted him the opening goal, before debutant Robbie Keane volleyed in a second. Blackpool's Charlie Adam scored from a corner only for Obinna's rasping shot to make it 3-1 before half-time. Adam thumped a free-kick against the bar as the Seasiders laid siege in the second half but West Ham held on. From the outset, neither side held anything back as they both went all out in attack, and the game developed a lively tempo. Although Ian Holloway's team had the better of the early possession, it was the visitors who did more with the ball when they had it, and the first meaningful chance fell to Obinna. Frederic Piquionne fired in a cross from the left which was allowed to go all the way across the box to Obinna and his bobbling shot drew a good full-stretch from Kingson. Obinna was a constant threat, and with West Ham having clearly identified the right-hand side of Blackpool's defence as a weakness, he was regularly in the thick of the action. When the first goal of the game came, it was no surprise that the Nigerian was involved. He twisted and turned and pulled marker Craig Cathcart out of position, and opened up the angle to shoot from the left-hand corner of the box, with Kingson inexplicably palming the ball into his own net. But with the Hammers having shipped 10 goals in their last three league games, Blackpool knew the visitors were open to a sucker punch, and they very nearly landed one through Andy Reid. The Blackpool debutant spotted keeper Robert Green off his line and tried to curl a shot into the far top corner from wide on the right, but the England keeper back-pedalled and managed to finger-tip the ball over the bar. Seeing their lead threatened roused West Ham to action and inevitably Obinna was involved. He drew a fine double save from Kingson but there was nothing the Ghanaian could do about Keane's follow-up volley into the bottom corner from close range. But just as Avram Grant's side were starting to think of the rare luxury of a two goal half-time cushion, Blackpool struck back. Adam, the focus of so much pre-match attention, fired in a low corner from the right which somehow eluded everyone and skidded into the far corner to put the hosts on the scoreboard. Amazingly, there was still time for another goal before the break, and once again, Obinna was at the heart of things. Scott Parker charged forward from the centre circle and laid the ball off to Obinna, who unleashed an unstoppable left-foot shot from 30 yards into the top corner. Adam continued to show his huge value in the transfer market by being at the centre of everything Blackpool did, and he came within inches of narrowing West Ham's lead when he smashed a second-half free-kick against the crossbar. That free-kick was earned after James Tomkins fouled substitute James Beattie and the introduction of the former Everton striker caused West Ham's defence all kinds of problems. Winston Reid in particular struggled to deal with him, and was lucky to avoid conceding a penalty when he hauled Beattie down in the box, although the forward did not complain much about the decision. Beattie came on at the same time as former Hammer Marlon Harewood, showing the home side's attacking intent, and they laid siege to Green's goal for the rest of the game. But for all Blackpool's pressure, Green's stoppage-time one-handed save from Harewood was one of the few times he was truly threatened, and the visitors held on for only their second away win of the season. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/eng_prem/9379946.stm |
Nigeria international Ikechukwu Uche has been told he can play football again after undergoing two knee operations. The 27-year-old striker picked up the injury during his second league match with Spanish club Real Zaragoza in September 2009. Uche seemed to have recovered from the injury but had a second operation in July 2010. Now the club's doctor has given him the all-clear to resume playing. Uche, who made his international debut for Nigeria's Super Eagles in 2007, has spent most of his career playing in Spain. He moved to Zaragoza from another Spanish side, Getafe, on a four-year contract. The injury cost Uche a place in the Super Eagles squad for the Africa Cup of Nations in Angola and the subsequent World Cup in South Africa. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/africa/9384192.stm |
Montpellier have signed Nigeria striker John Utaka from Portsmouth for an undisclosed fee. The 29-year-old, who spent five years in France after joining Lens in 2002, has agreed a two-and-a-half year deal. He has struggled at Portsmouth ever since joining them from Rennes for a reported £7m in 2007, having scored just seven goals in that time. Utaka, who has also played in Qatar and Egypt, had a contract with Portsmouth until 2012. Montpellier are eighth in the French first division but have managed only 17 goals in 20 games this season. He could make his debut in next weekend's game against St Etienne. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/teams/p/portsmouth/9381195.stm |

Liverpool are considering a summer swoop for Inter Milan star Victor Obinna, according to reports in Italy. The Nigerian international is currently on loan at West Ham and has stated he would like to stay at Upton Park, but his head may be turned if there’s the possibility of a move to Anfield. The 23-year-old has made just eight appearances for Inter Milan since joining them from Chievo, and the San Siro club are reportedly ready to sell for around £8million. And that has alerted Liverpool’s newly appointed director of football Damien Comolli. Obinna would fit the criteria of the club’s new American owners who are keen to recruit young players who would have a re-sale value.
