Health › Resident Doctors Begin Strike Today, Woo Other Health Workers by heykims(op): 7:28am On Sep 07, 2020 |
The Nigeria Association of Resident Doctors has said its nationwide strike scheduled to commence today (Monday) will go ahead because the Federal Government has yet to invite its leadership for a meeting. NARD said the Nigerian Medical Association, Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives and others should support the struggle for upward review of its hazard allowance from the paltry sum of N5,000. The National Publicity Secretary, Dr Stanley Egbogu, told The PUNCH on Sunday that the government had not invited NARD for a meeting despite notifying them. He said, “The Federal Government has not invited us to a meeting after we notified them that we will be proceeding on strike. We have directed all our members across the country both federal and state institutions to recommence the strike we suspended on June 22, 2020. “We call on all other unions in the health sector, the NMA, PSN, NANNM to support this struggle for upward review of our hazard allowance from the paltry sum of N5,000. “The truth is that the current hazard can’t be compared to the daily risks of hazard we face every day from the current coronavirus to the Hepatitis B and C viruses. The risks is just too much for N5,000.” Recall that NARD had resolved to commerce an indefinite strike with effect from Monday September 7 2020. The organisation was demanding payment of the medical residency training funding to all its members as approved in the revised 2020 budget and payment of the outstanding April/May and June COVID-19 inducement allowances to all health workers, among others. https://punchng.com/resident-doctors-begin-strike-today-woo-other-health-workers/ |

Each senator received Covid-19 palliative allowance of 20million naira each, 15 million naira went to each HOR members. Then the core workers in the health sector left to their fate. God curse them all authorities! Meanwhile the hazard allowance for doctors regardless of cadre is a meagre 5000naira. Haaaa! |

Nigeria is a damned state See the federal legislators appropriating 15 to 20million naira to themselves as covid19 palliative. Now in Ogun, the state teaching hospital doctors are on strike, resident doctors nationwide have declared to go on strike in few days time, now Ogun civil servants declaring strike too. Nigeria is in trouble. |

What u call experiment is actually treatment, doctors were still treating him till he finally died. It is unethical for them to have let him die even though it was obvious he would most likely succumb. Euthanasia is not allowed in medical practice. Commend and not condemn the doctors. |

alphajba12: A little learning is a dangerous thing. Where on earth did Nigerians get the idea that medical training is free (or almost free)? This is complete rubbish. I am a medical doctor (almost a consultant to be precise). I paid school fees, exam fees, paid for text books, projects, etc. In fact, I paid more than my colleagues in other courses. So where is the "free" that you're talking about? In residency training, I paid almost 100k each time for primaries exam till I passed. I then was lucky to get a place for residency almost immediately (some of my colleagues had to travel far and wide for interviews before getting, and some had to sign to pay with the first 3 months salary before getting). While in residency I've travelled for several update courses costing over 200k each and writing books all at my expense. I recently passed my exam which cost 160k minus travel, accommodation, feeding, etc expenses all paid by me (I was blessed to pass first attempt. Each exam costs almost 500k in total and I know doctors that have had to write up to 6 times before passing not because they're not good but because frankly speaking our residency in this country is almost crap and filled with many sadistic examiners). Government pays nothing so forget the lies they tell you on tv. I owe Nigeria nothing, Nigerian doctors owe this country nothing. Even consultants are fleeing, I have considered it several times but I have a lot to consider. We ain't talking of the post graduate level sir. The fact is medical school at the undergraduate level is almost free when compared to the cost in the advanced countries. U stated u paid school fees in medical school, how much was it? |

Nigerian leaders are daft, u train doctors almost for free and u lose them to other nations that run medical schools very expensively. The govt should find a way to tie down the doctors by improving their welfare. Medical schools in Nigeria are almost for free but in the advanced countries, it is a multimillion naira project that graduate doctors have to spend years paying off student loans after graduation. |
