Politics / Re: Attahiru Jega, New Inec Chair. by Homonide: 9:55am On Jun 09, 2010
The appointment of Prof Jega, radical activist and a man of unassailable character (@ least up till now) as the new INEC Chair is undoubtedly a good men as regards 2011 polls. As much as i believe that he is the right man for the job, given his track record and credentials, he should be careful not to fall into the same pit as his erstwhile deputy when he was ASUU President, who incidentally is the immediate past Chair of INEC, the much hated, arrogant and castigated Prof Maurice Iwu.
The Symbolism in this appointment shouldn't be lost on all students and followers of political history and trend in Nigeria.
I also hope the Professor of Political Science wouldn't fall into the same pit, as another "radical activist" and former ASUU president, Dr Iyiorchia Ayu, who became anti-people and fought against everything he stood for as ASUU President after his appointment as Minister of education. He was also a former Senate President.
Prof Jega as a former Consultant to INEC knows exactly what needs to be done to sanitize INEC and thereby organize credible elections come 2011. The question is: Is President Jonathan and the ruling elites prepared for change by allowing credible elections to hold next year?

Politics / Re: Would Goodluck Jonathan Win A Free & Fair Election? by Homonide: 4:59pm On Jun 08, 2010
I wish there was a straight YES or NO to this question, but there isn't.
First, the only thing that can make Jonathan organize a free and fair election come 2011 is if he decides not to contest. As a matter of fact, that would be an Herculean task considering the fact that the elites and ruling class in Nigeria would do anything to cling to power. So, Jonathan can decide not to contest and write his name in Gold by organizing a free and fair election, or contest in a free and fair election and risk not winning (which i doubt very much, what with Mr do-or-die hanging on his neck).
On the other hand, if he's really bent on winning, then Nigerians should forget about having a free and fair election come 2011.
My only hope is that he takes the path of honour so as to put Nigeria firmly on the path of true democracy.
Education / Re: Uniben 2009/2010 Post Ume Result Out by Homonide: 2:30pm On Dec 05, 2009
ovdot:

Congrats to everyone that has been admitted to UNIBEN. Well I graduated from Uniben in 2005 and I will say the best moments of my life was in school. These are my advice;
to u;
Accomodation: my candid advice is that as freshmen it's preferable to stay in the hostel though Uniben hostels are nothing to write home abt.
Academics: Uniben has the best lecturers among Nigerian Universities, always ensure u attend lectures, buy textbooks from lecturer and international textbooks, attend tutorials and ensure u use the library regularly(this very important).
Religious Life: Uniben can boost of having a Catholic church, Anglican church and mosque. All leading churches has campus fellowship in the school. There are also interdenominational fellowship like Cu/Nifes.
Relationship-bf/gf: Uniben girls can form, try and start a relationship while in school, I noticed that the guys that were in relationship while in sch are getting married now.
Life after School: Uniben graduates are highly sought after(1st class).so ensure u come out with a 1 or a 2.1.
I think I hv to stop nw. Congrats once again.

Uniben has d best lecturers among Nigerian universities?i beg to disagree, only if u have some data to that effect.

Secondly,Uniben graduates are highly sought after(1st class). Now personally, methinks Uniben produce too much 1st class graduates, i mean we r talking of about 120 something per year, haba,na so una sabi reach?Simply put, getting a 1st class in Uniben is relatively cheap.
By the way,i'm a graduating student of A.B.U., Zaria.

Politics / Re: Reps Tackle China Over Killing Of 30 Nigerians by Homonide: 8:42pm On Oct 22, 2009
@ Jovlar1979

I don't think committing an Offence punishable by death is a good excuse for executing 30 Foreign nationals- in this case Nigerians. The killings were

simply unacceptable and i wonder if the Chinese Authorities would have tried that with another serious Country.

It is only in Nigeria that someone like Mr Yar'adua who was visibly unhealthy would be imposed on the country. Mr President, do the honourable

thing, @ least for once. Resign? did i hear Nairalanders laugh? i think so, because we know that won't happen in this country.

semid4lyfe:

Crap! The guy should shut up and stop talking nonsense. when he won the AYC and won silver in WYC and Olympics, his players listened and were not difficult to coach but now that he has failed, the players do not listen? YEYE!

He has just shot himself in the foot because what he has just admitted is that he selected players who do not respect him and refused to play according to his instructions. It says much for ability as a coach. The guy should 'mechionu' and stop speaking from both sides of his mouth jare. Nonsense!

True talk semid4lyfe

I wouldn't be so harsh on Siasia, even though i still believe he should have just accepted that he failed, simple. even the best coaches in the

world don't always get the result.Sayig the guys didn't play to instruction means he was not in charge of the team.As a good coach , the no 1

attribute is DISCIPLINE.

All the same, i wish Sisia the best in his coaching career.

Good is a relative term Homonide, if compared to the likes of IBB, Abacha, Obj, possibly correct. When you place him against Gani, Father Matthew Kukkah, Chinua Achebe, then there's trouble smiley. Go fishing all the same.

@ Sagamite.

Just read that lengthy thread about Abiola and June !2, and i've come to the conclusion that even though some of the allegations were not factual,

they still show that Abiola was never a saint. I'm just astonished that the man i thought was a saint wasn't afterall. the ITT palaver for instance is

mind-boggling.

Insanity extraordinaire!!! It is only in Nigeria that some1 like Muhammed Abacha can even think of aspiring for the post of a Councillor, not to talk of

governor. but why am i not surprised? beacuse i have seen the way some Northerners adore Sani Abacha, they put his pictures in their cars, as if

the guy is some kind of hero. for GOD's sake, the guy was a KILLER, A Physco!

sure of how people would receive Win 7.

Absolutely Not. It means she's seen too many (which is in itself not a problem but why does she remember them? lol). If he doesn't think it immediately, he'll think it later trust me.

and i dont know where you got this article from but i dont think guys in general value compliments that much. Maybe because we spend our whole lives dishing out bogus compliments to you ladies so when we hear one we can't help but doubt it's authenticity.lol

and the "nice arms" thing is so cliche. you're gonna tell your husband who hasn't been to the gym in decades nice arms? lol

and nice feet? i mean feet? i can't think of any guy i know who cares too much about his feet.

Haha, na true talk o, we all know the average Naija lady wants to think of herself as some sort of "Supermodel", even when she's as fat as Yokozuna. wink
Politics / Re: Must Read: Nasir El-rufai To Yar Adua, About His Refusal Of Nigeria Passport. by Homonide: 11:14pm On Oct 14, 2009
Miss EZ:

I think that denying El Rufai a passport is wrong and most people here on nairaland support that. the point they are trying to make is that El Rufai should not be angry cos he is only reaping what he sowed.

People express themselves in different ways and what they are trying to say may not always be clear

I see some people trying to make this a tribal thing. please lets move away from that.
we all know that the three major tribes have and are still abusing power in this country. A politician is a politician regardless of where he/she comes from

voice, diction is zero, delivery;non-existent.

Olu Jacob still remains the best alternative.
TV/Movies / Re: Chimamanda's Book Picked For A Hollywood Movie by Homonide: 2:17pm On Oct 14, 2009
Good news i suppose. Although i haven't read the book, it's obviously a very good one. I just hop the producer would adapt the novel into a movie well

enough, so that some crucial parts of the story shall not be lost in the process. The choice of actors to be used is very important, the producer should

beware of funny Nollywood stars that are not original, do not have a good diction, and are nothing but Opportunists in the business.

Congratulations Chimamanda- the Chinua Achebe of her generation.

@ least some cops in the Nigerian Police are doing there jobs. Salute to the Nigerian Police Command in Osun State for a job well done. We should note

that, regardless of the fact that the notes were fake, the police could still be tempted to something stupid and rash about the currencies.
Politics / Re: Yar'adua Repudiates NIA Memo On El Rufai And Ribadu, Fires Dg Imohe ! by Homonide: 12:58pm On Oct 14, 2009
As far as i'm concerned the DG of NIA was just used as a pawn in power game. I think some1 high up in the Yar'adead( sorry Yar'adua)

adminstration issued that directive, and now because of protests from left, right, front, and center, some1 has to be made a scape goat, and he/she h

has to be as distant from the President as possible;thus the sack of the NIA DG.

Mr Yar'adead remains a big failure and the sacking of the NIA DG cannot score him any political point, no matter how little, it can only subtract.
Sports / Re: Osaze Wins MTN - AIT Nigerian Footballer Of The Year by Homonide: 12:38pm On Oct 14, 2009
Osaze, though half Nigerian, half Russian has demonstrated a commitment to the National team, second to no other's in that team. He is the

quintessence of dedication and Patriotism to one's Nation.

Congratulations Osaze, on a well deserved honour.

As for Coach Siaisia, i have mixed feelings.Owing to the fact that Nigerian National Coaches performed below expectation, i can't really fault the

decision of Siaisia being given the award? But what of other Coaches in the Nigerian league?
Business / Re: Amnesty: Nigeria Earns N18b From Oil Daily by Homonide: 3:11am On Oct 14, 2009
jaybee:

your responses are laughable. they betray your individual and collective ignorace. that's how writers (rabble-rousers, insinuators, provocators, inciters, speculators etc. ) program you to think, feel, talk, behave and probably act; like robots.

now 1.7million barrels per day translate to N18Billion a day. do you know how much it costs to  produce one (1) barrel of oil ? do you know what constitutes the cost of production? do you know what percentage of the cost is paid by government? do you know what percentge of the profit goes to the government? do you know what percentage of the cost is paid by the producing companies? do you know what percentge of the profit goes to the producing companies? do you know the incubation period for oil and gas field development? these are just few tips to let you know that oil and gas business is far more than just number of barrels times number of nairas (dollars).

CORRIGENDUM: i meant to quote jaybee and not George_D, my apologies to George_D.

I can see that u have been properly educated jaybee, we are talking about earnings here, profit after deducting all the expenditure,

I find it hard to believe that a good number of people didn't know that the main reason the Govt offered the amnesty is economical. But let us be

frank, N18 billion per day isn't small money, what is it being used for? GOD help Nigeria from a merciless ruling class bent on ruining our economy

and making the common man poorer by the day.

This post reminds me of a quote i came about recently,by a Maurice Bishop "You can call it blasphemy. I dispute the scriptures assertion that

GOD(emphasis mine) is everywhere. He is not in the minds of our rulers, ".

This quote aptly describes the Nigerian situation @ present.

Education / Re: Can The Sufferings Of Nigerian Students End? by Homonide: 8:05pm On Oct 13, 2009
This is a very interesting and complicated thread. There is no gainsaying the fact that Nigerian students have become the proverbial grass that suffers when the Elephants- the Federal government and ASUU fight over one thing or another, resulting in prolonged strikes which have crippled our educational system.
I intend to look at this problem from this point: What has the National Association of Nigerian students(NANS) done, as a stakeholder in the educational system?Over the years, NANS have become so irrelevant, fighting only for their selfish interests and therefore neglecting the mandate given to them by Nigerian students. If we, the students can't even fight for ourselves, then who will?
We can continue to heap blames on the Government for not doing anything to address the decay in the system, or ASUU for being greedy, thereby disturbing the academic calender at will, but the fact still remains that we,th students have not done enough to tackle this perennial problem of strikes.
I could write the whole day on this, but to answer the question: I hope so. I hope that one that, we shall be delivered from a government bent on destroying the very base, on which the development of this country depend on- Education.
