Nigeria reject Bafana friendly Posted: 2010-05-05 11:58 Nigeria officials say they have received an offer to play a pre-World Cup friendly with South Africa later this month, but say the timing is too short to accept. NFF Secretary General Bolaji Ojo-Oba told Sporting Life that the request for a friendly on May 16 would be forwarded to Nigeria technical Adviser Lars Lagerback, but doubts it would make any difference. "There is no way we can get the players to report for the game since they are busy with their clubs. "Besides, FIFa rules stipulate that we send the request for the release of players at least 14 days from the date of the game. "We only have 11 days from Wednesday and that is not feasible," Ojo-Oba said. Nigerians are getting increasingly concerned about the lack of tune-up games for the Super Eagles ahead of the World Cup, with Colombia the only confirmed game on May 30, and Ojo-Oba did little to clear those concerns. "We have had a few friendlies on the cards, but they are not feasible, either because of dates, or venues. "When we get those that are feasible, we would play." Time, however, is in short supply. http://kickoffnigeria.com/news/15220/nigeria-reject-bafana-friendly.php |
Isa Bio presents report on World Cup hotel fiasco Bio presents report on hotel fiasco Posted: 2010-05-05 11:39 Sports Minister Isa Bio will present his report to the Nigerian cabinet on the hotel fiasco which is about to cost Nigeria $125 000 of tax payers money. The Minister spent the last week in South Africa inspecting the facilities at the Hampshire Hotel originally picked by the NFF for the Super Eagles. The facility was rejected by the team and Technical Adviser Lars Lagerback picked the Protea Waterfont Hotel at Richards Bay instead. On Wednesday, Bio will present his inspection report to the Federal Executive Council and Acting President Goodluck Jonathan, with sanctions to be recommended for those found to be complicit in the act. The minister will address a press conference on Thursday. Colin Udoh |
NFF: Why we approved Hampshire Hotel Posted: 2010-05-05 20:48 The Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, on Wednesday gave detailed explanation of how it arrived at approving the now–dumped Hampshire Hotel, Ballito as the Super Eagles’ World Cup Team Base Camp. General Secretary, Dr. Bolaji Ojo-Oba insisted that the decision was taken in the best interest, to satisfy the Head Coach and also based on experience at a previous tournament. “It is unfortunate that the whole thing is now being made to look like the NFF had any motive other than the team’s best interest. We believed, and still believe, that the Head Coach is best–placed to determine the best possible site for his team to train or use as abode for a tournament, and in this case, at the time we were looking for a Team Base Camp in December 2009, that Head Coach was Shuaibu Amodu. “Really, we gave him a mandate to look out for somewhere good enough for the team and which cost would not be exactly on the steep side, fully aware of our financial situation. He went in search of this place with Mr. Peterside Idah, a former Nigerian international player who is also a member of the team’s technical crew and who lives in South Africa. We expected them to be capable of choosing a place good enough, at considerable prize. “In the end, they found this Hampshire Hotel, new structure, with a firm pledge by the hotel Management that they would be able to finish everything with two months left to the World Cup and also meet our other specifications. We sent other officials there and the hotel Management confirmed the same thing. And it was on this basis that we approached FIFA to approve the place for us since our Head Coach wanted the place. “I had before now given the instance of the place where our team stayed at the 1994 World Cup in the United States, which was quite big and had enough room for distractions and troublemakers. Most of the players blamed the hotel’s distractions for the loss to Italy in the Round of 16. “There were no shady deals, and we challenge anyone to fully investigate the matter. All we wanted, all the Head Coach wanted, was a quiet place that would suit the team. At the time we were looking for a place in December 2009, no one knew Shuaibu Amodu would not be the man to lead the team to the World Cup. Things only happened thereafter. “Also at that time, the hype about security issues was not so pronounced. The Hampshire Hotel management promised to do the fence by April 28 but they failed, and now gave us a new date of May 6, which we rejected. “The Protea Hotel Waterfront was always on our cards, more so because we had booked the place as pre –World Cup training camp. It did not drop from the sky. We have booked the place earlier, and we always made it clear to Hampshire Hotel people that we would opt out if they failed to meet our specifications by deadline day. “Whatever we did was in consideration of the best interest of the team. We always had a second option, which we have now fallen back on.” http://kickoffnigeria.com/news/15228/nff-why-we-approved-hampshire-hotel.php |
Nigeria replace Iceland with S/Arabia Posted: 2010-05-06 07:48 Nigeria will now play Saudi Arabia in Austria on May 25 after Iceland pulled out citing concerns about the volcanic ash cloud from Eyjafjallajökull. "We will now play Saudi Arabi in Austria on May 25, rather than Iceland in London on the same date," NFF Chief Media Officer Ademola Olajire told KickOffNigeria.com. It is the most recent turn in Nigeria's chaotic preparations for the World Cup, which has seen friendlies cancelled almost as soon as they are announced, but Olajire insisted that this was for real. "The contract has been signed and confirmed and the game will definitely go ahead," he said when pressed about the viability of this particular fixture. This means Nigeria will play Saudi Arabia on May 25, Colombia on May 30 and North Korea on June 4, barring any further changes. Technical Adviser Lars Lagerback is expected to name his final squad on June 1. |
Taye Taiwo wins title with Marseille Nigeria defender Taye Taiwo won the French Ligue 1 title with Olympic Marseille on Wednesday night with a 3-1 win over Elderson Echiejile's Rennes. The victory, coupled with Auxerre's loss earlier in the day to Olympic Lyon, ensured that Marseille claimed their first title since 1992, when they had a certain Abedi Pele. Argentina's Gabriel Heinze got Marseille the perfect start with a goal on 4 minutes, but the champions-in-waiting were soon pegged back by Jimmy Briand's goal on 38 minutes. Mamadou Niang and Lucho Gonzalez scored within a minute of each other to confirm Marseille's first title in 18 years. Taiwo came in as a 57th minute sub for goal scorer Heinze. http://kickoffnigeria.com/news/15236/taiwo-wins-title-with-marseille.php |
RSA:excuse, excuse, excuse, abeg bone excuse jare, ain't you guys doing well in other sports like crickets and rugby? you don't have excuses to the successes you have enjoyed in these sports right? why do you now have excuse for football? the only time SA won the nations cup was because some big nations like Nigeria withdrew from the competition, remember that we still had our best squad then and would have won that tournament if we didn't pull out to protest against the oppressors in SA, remember? anyways, why you qualified for the 2 previous worldcup IMO was because of the kind of oppositions SA competed with, now that the format has changed, i would like to see how many more worldcup SA will go to. since 1996, SA has been having a nose dive and it's getting worse, beware and work on these lapses. |
