https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l3aXERcmsZY Why are young Nigerians turning to drugs? growing number of young Nigerians are addicted to drugs, officials and police say, turning to cheap narcotics like codeine, tramadol, and other chemical substances in search of a high. The government this month have banned the production of codeine-based cough syrup and, in the wake of a recent BBC investigation, temporarily shuttered three pharmaceutical firms for allegedly failing to cooperate with federal inspectors. Now, drug-reform policy advocates, such as RISE Nigeria's Adeolu Ogunrombi, fear the problem will worsen and are pushing authorities to be more proactive about tackling corruption and closing loopholes they say still exist in the public health system. "There is still a huge demand, and a criminal market is going to spring up to meet the needs of the users who are in need of the substances", he said. "We don't even consider that someone who is dependent on drugs is still a human being." In this episode, The Stream explores the depth of Nigeria's opioid problem to learn how the government is working to prevent abuse and the distribution of drugs on the black market, and what needs to be done next. |

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rr5eOgwXmJM Nigerian doctors decry alleged maltreatment by state governments National Association of Resident Doctors, NARD, has called on the Nigerian government to fully take over running of tertiary hospitals across the country from state governments. The association has also warned the federal government to ensure 'relativity' in dealing with all health professionals in the nation, as the government is reportedly set to meet demands of striking health workers in the country. The group alleged that the striking health workers harassed its members in some tertiary hospitals in the nation, while they were carrying out their lawful duties. Addressing journalists in Abuja on Monday May 14, president of the group, Ugochukwu Chinaka said states such as Osun, Plateau among others were maltreating resident doctors and had denied them of their salaries and other benefits. NARD gave additional ultimatum to University of Jos Teaching Hospital after initial ultimatum had elapsed. The association warned that if its members who were sacked by the hospital are not reabsorbed, normalcy in the sector could be disrupted. Chinaka also appealed to the federal government to sign the Resident Bill passed by the National Assembly into law. |
