Agriculture / Re: Tips On Effective Marketing Of Agricultural Produce Anywhere In Nigeria. by hoyze24: 6:12am On Aug 02, 2017 |
After a well conducted feasibility study, the next step is mobilizing resources needed for effective marketing process. It would interest you to know agriculture is the only sector where every other activity revolves around production. Production here deals with the processes involved in the cultivation of the produce either to be consumed directly or used as raw materials for production of other goods. You can’t take away the role of production in the marketing of agricultural produce, what are you going to market anyway? So, a good place to get things kicked off smoothly is establishing a good relationship with suppliers if you are not producing yourself. Get along well with the farmers, build necessary trust and be specific on the quality of produce you like. A good way to deal with producers is through cooperative societies, this affords one the opportunity to have varieties of produce to choose from as well as effective supply. The services of produce aggregators can also be employed; these are people who reside in the farmers’ location. Their major role is to serve as intermediary between marketers and farmers. They get produce in bit from different farmers and combine to form large quantities. As with dealing with direct suppliers, also be specific about the quality of produce required. These people are the ones who do all the dirty jobs of gathering and they easily deliver to the marketer at agreed locations within their community. They are paid on commission basis. These people are especially important when you don’t want to spend a lot of time in the village or in cases of language difficulty. Be sure to examine the quality of produce offered by these people before payment as they might act dubious sometimes. However, majority of marketers today source produce directly from local markets close to production areas. It is believed produce are cheaper here, oh yes they are but you can get them way cheaper if you get smarter. Solving the problem of sourcing for supplies is a huge step towards effective marketing. Now that the supply side has been taken care of, it’s time to start thinking of logistics. |

Agriculture / Tips On Effective Marketing Of Agricultural Produce Anywhere In Nigeria. by hoyze24: 1:41pm On Jul 26, 2017 |
Marketing of agricultural produce entails a lot of hard work, knowledge and active participation in almost all processes involved. We need to first examine what marketing is all about; it refers to all the activities involved in turning a prospect to a buyer; this is especially notable in the IT industry. A prospect is someone who is perceived as one who will be interested in trying out your products or services. Getting prospects involve careful and well taught procedures in mapping out the people your products/services are meant to serve in terms of their age, geographical location or income level. The set of people captured in any of these categories are prospects before actually commencing the marketing process per se. To convert a potential prospect to a lead entails first creating awareness about the products/services, they must be aware of that which they would want to part away their cash to get. This stage being the first process is all important as it’s crucial a picture about the product is well entrenched in the hearts and minds of the people. This is best done with the good use of pictorial representations introducing what the product is all about. This however should be kept short and organized as nobody likes to read long epistles. Prospect in marketing of agricultural produce just like conventional marketing entails consideration of certain habits as well as cultural beliefs of people. As an example, snail which is widely consumed in the southern part of the country is a taboo in most of the northern states. Anyone considering a northerner as a prospect in the snail business is utterly not going to make sales. After information gathering about who the prospects are and their location, the next process is to study the existing market about the produce you will be introducing into the region. What similar products are currently available in the location? What’s the buying behavior of the people? How acceptable is their products? Providing qualitative answers to these questions will afford you a nice decision making process on strategies that can be employed to break into the market. You need to understand two major factors which influence buyer’s behavior is price and quality of products. However, before quality comes price. It’s when people are able to afford your products that the quality can be determined. So, always note the power of pricing. I call that POP. Always strive to offer competitive pricing, many times people tend to enter a new market with higher pricing for their products due to the perception that their products are of better quality. I’m happy to tell you the people who determine the quality of your products are the customers. No matter how good you think it is, if the customers say otherwise, then it’s no good. Haven’t you noticed how people are willing to pay for some products despite their high costs? To make prices more reasonable, define the income level of people your products are meant for early enough. Packaged Ijebu gari is not meant for the ordinary man on the street who patronize open markets. So, you tend to find it in markets, shops and supermarkets where majority of the people who frequent those places are of the income level intended for the product. All in all, what this piece has pointed is the fact that you need a good feasibility report before delving into marketing any agricultural produce. I hope this helps someone in their decision making process. I’ll be sharing more marketing tips on this thread from time to time. |
Agriculture / The Better Farmer. by hoyze24: 10:33am On Jul 26, 2017 |
Agriculture in Nigeria is tilted to be the next pot of gold. Hence the massive rush of youths and entrepreneurs into the sector that was once the mainstay of our economy. The thought that seem not to get off my mind however is the neglect of the existing farmers in the new pursuit of this treasure. Often times we hear of entrepreneurs invest so much into farming and raising livestock, this is a good development in ensuring food security. Of the over 180million Nigerians, about 40million are involved in agriculture, thus making it the largest employer of labour. However, over 85% of this population are currently smallholders meaning farming is being done on a very small scale with little mechanization process. In a 2017 report of the world bank group on enabling the business of agriculture, it was stated that for every 10000hectares of land cultivated in OECD countries, there are 1300 tractors used compared with 2.24 in sub Saharan Africa. Currently, there are countless programs undertaken by the federal ministry of agrculture and rural development to better the lot of rural farmers but this has in no way showed signs of progress in the livelihoods of these people. Then it got me thinking what the actual problem could be. Well, unlike most supporters of agribusiness who provide rural farmers with finance in cash, I do believe there are better ways to put money into use other than providing physical cash to these farmers. First we need to understand there is a big knowledge gap that needs to be filled in the existing agricultural practices of these farmers. Acquiring the necessary knowledge and skills has been a major problem. These farmers would rather stick with their obsolete practices than try out something they are not sure would work. They need proofs that modern practice is the way to go and this can only be done by demonstrating to them what works. This in essence is the reason why extension workers exist; to bridge the knowledge gap and translate the research findings from shelf to field. However in the nigerian space, these people are almost non existent, the few available ones lack the necessary resources to work with and are skills deficient. In the developed nations, technology has been adopted to fill in the roles of these people but with the low literacy rate and internet penetration in rural areas of Nigeria, it's difficult to adopt such. Hence there's the need to reach out to these farmers physically more often and youths have a huge part to play in this. A more efficient and cost effective way has however been discovered to reach these people. To be continued. |

Agriculture / Re: Why Do We Rarely Talk About These Crops? by hoyze24: 12:09pm On Jul 18, 2017 |
Childofaking:It's quite obvious everyone wants to make money. My concern however is when we don't meet the local demand of major staple foods, we will have no choice than to keep importing. Hence I feel, we should tackle the basics first. We can also cultivate other crops as an aside but we should really consider giving more priority to the more important things. Concerning the report you read on soybeans production, I think its hard to determine productivity before farming in Nigeria, this is largely due to lack of necessary data to work with. Productivity in different ecological zones can't be the same. In developed countries, a farmer can tell you an approximate of expected yield because farming is under controlled conditions. We should start paying attention to data collection and analysis, that's the best way to plan and this statrs with individuals. |
Agriculture / Why Do We Rarely Talk About These Crops? by hoyze24: 9:51am On Jul 18, 2017 |
Agriculture is definitely the most interesting and educating section on nairaland. Over time I've seen people talk about cassava, ginger, cowpea, plantain, cocoa, sesame etcetera cultivation. Some crops however that seem to have few headlines are maize (corn), rice, sorghum and soyabeans. I always wondered why these crops are rarely mentioned even when they are part of the most cultivated crops in Nigeria. I know corn is cultivated in almost every state in Nigeria. Is it that these crops are not economically viable or we've totally forgotten they are major staples? If I ever go into farming, I'm sure going to cultivate these crops because they seem more stomach filling, cheap and nutritious than most other crops. You may argue their industrial benefits but don't you think we have to feed before considering industries? My opinions though. I want to know why these crops are rarely mentioned here. Does anyone here actually have experience cultivating any of these crops on a large scale? Don't you think they are the best set of crops that can get people out of hunger and mitigate stunted growth? I want contributions please cos I want these foods to be available to the poorest very soon. |

Evening, I work for a foundation which is planning to start a farming initiative in Benue soon. It's going to be dealing in provision of extension services to promote good farming practices among the most rural farmers. I'm excited to be on the team because I'd always look forward to sometime in life where I can help someone get out of poverty. However, I need a Benue resident who understands farming in the state so well. I need to know few things about the present practices in the state. I hope I get enough people to enlighten me. My whatsapp contact is 08026875710. Thanks fellas. |

I think they've studied human behaviors long enough to understand how people feel about confronting security personnel in a gated environment. It's a strategy that makes everyone feel welcomed and it bears no risk in case of car theft. |

Na only 17 you see, about 30 percent are receiving stipends without working while about 20% are actually doing it part time. Ask people in agro. The money spent on this scheme could have been used for something more engaging like industries resuscitation or as loans to budding entrepreneurs. Majority of volunteers are in for the money and not the work or value. The scheme was just to fulfil electoral promises, it wasn't planned and I doubt it will ever meet its expectation. 2 Likes |
