i had a period of depression and i thank God for the kind of mum i have, she saw the signs early enough and forced me to seek help. I lost all my confidence and was jumpping from one relationship to another. the thing is some people can't even tell, they just don't know why everything has lost meaning. You never quite get over it, even now many years after I still find it hard to get out of bed in the mornings, the trick is to be surrounded by love, people who understand enough to be there for u but not push you too much. I took time off and moved in with my mum and we'd spend long hours just talking about nothin in particular, then my cousin gave birth. her fiance dumped her when she was 5months pregnant without any explanation, so she moved in with us and when her baby came, it was like someone turned the lights on in my soul. i used to spend so much time with him and i remember how his laughter always made me smile. I still go for counselling once in a while but i think it was family that helped me through the difficult times. Being alone can only cause you to sink further into depression |
As with all of my trips to Nigeria, the tradition is having Ewa Agoyin and Agege bread for breakfast. On one trip, i woke early ready for breakfast and the cook told me the woman who used to sell it nearby had moved or sumthin,,, so determined to have my breakfast i pulled on a pair of jeans and jumped into the car armed with my storage bowl and N200 and directions to the nearest joint. I live just by the entrance to lekki beach so i'm infact closer to ajah than obalende,,, so i went to ajah in search of my illusive meal. at each stop i was told either they had just run out of ewa agoyin or the person wasnt selling that morning. i was running out of time so i decided to head for obalende, i surely can't go wrong,,, despite visiting nigeria at least twice every yr i hadnt actually been to obalende for about 7yrs or so. To begin with i got lost driving around in circles trying to get my bearing and then like the light at the end of a tunnel i found a road side buka that had the wonderful beans and bread. i bought enough to feed an army headed back into my car and in my hurry to get home and without realising it, drove into a one-way street and through a LASMA check point,,, i don't need to explain what happened next but thank God for british accent,,,, I didnt have my license or any form of identification, no phone and no money. they "detained" me there until someone came to "bail" me (their words exactly). I had to call my brother on credit from those road side call centres and when he arrived i was happily eating my ewa and bread and gisting with the mechanic that shared a stand with the phone people that was one of thebest days of my life |
@ NubianQ Abeg ignore him and his kind,,, his breed is soon to be extinct. It will take a while but more Nigerian men are beginning to appreciate women for something other than their lady lumps. If women spend more time developing themselves rather than obsessing about some man coming to marry them and taking all their woes away, they will see that they will infact be able to take their own woes away, PLUS, they end up with a man who loves and respects them as partners, and not end up as a glorified slave and baby producing machines. Many Nigerian man suffer from chronic ignorance and still expect women to be seen and not heard, that their place is in the kitchen, barefoot and pregnant,,, not if i have anything to say about it. I have been attacked on Nairaland for talking against men but I love men as much as the next girl, and i have the utmost respect for the marriage institution but i refuse to be treated any less than i deserve.I believe a wife should care for and respect her husband but respect is earned and should be reciprocated. Nigerian girls today lack any self worth, that is why they sell their bodies and souls. Its sad that Nigerian girls today think so little of themselves that they offer themselves to the highest bidder in the name of "runs" how then do they expect to get respect from these same man. Like i said, Liberation isn't a bad thing, its the power to make choices, its the right to seen and heard and respected as an intelligent individual rather than a walking vagina! |

NubianQ:I feel u sister and I agree with you whole heartedly I made the decision a long time ago that I will make the choice, I decide what direction my life is heading and with whom form a very young i age i saw what the quest for marriage and acceptance from men can do to women and i promised myself i wont be that person. There are Nigeiran men with the values u seek, I know cos I've met a few and girl,,, its worth the wait,,, hang in there and keep being strong when u meet them u'll know because they'll recognise the person inside and they'll treat u with the respect u deserve Liberation isnt a bad thing, its about knowing who u are and what you want |
