Tobimillar1:you can get a good gsd from a trustworthy kennel just don't buy from random dog owners. if you buy from a kennel you can check the dog's parents and if possible post the pics here so we can at least tell to an extent if it's a good stock, although you can't just judge a dog's purity based on looks alone. you also need to check the dog's temperament, don't just pick randomly, get a puppy that has already started showing signs of alertness. for now I think gsd is the safest way to go for a security dog, just make sure you exercise and socialise the dog properly for her so she won't end up with a nervous, destructive dog. other guard breeds you mentioned are too much for her to handle as a first time dog owner, they are either too big, stubborn or aggressive. get her a gsd that has a moderate amount of all those qualities. goodluck |
Tobimillar1:don't get her a Caucasian or boerbel ooh I don't think she can handle training and controlling those dogs at her age. get her a gsd they are easier for first timers, they obey better. the others you called might be too much for her to handle, they are usually huge and stubborn so for your mum's safety just go with something easier. if you can find time to exercise the gsd regularly then there shouldn't be an issue. a pure bred pittbull isn't a good guard dog, and before you buy any one, ask to see the parents. although at that price range I doubt you'll get a pure bred dog but you'll surely get a good quality dog if you check well. |

none of those dogs you mentioned are easily controllable but with a good training system you can control them, since you said you're not a first time dog owner I guess you should know about socialising and training dogs. boerbels and Caucasian's are not as active and agile as gsd's so if you're the kind of person that is used to doing strenuous activities with your dog they aren't the breeds for you. don't get me wrong, they are still strong and active but just not as energy filled as gsd's. they are also very strong dog's so you need a strong hand to control them, especially Caucasian's, they can be very dominant and stubborn sometimes. I have a Caucasian and he can be a handful sometimes, even with all the training he still wants to play by his own rules sometimes. Caucasian's are also very good guard dog's, they have this character of being very friendly with their family but they can be deadly to outsiders. they make very good companions so they can double as pets and security dogs too if they are properly trained and socialised. as I'm typing now, my dog was lying down at my feet and begging for a tummy rub but someone was making noise too close to my gate and he jumped up in 1second and ran to the gate to bark at the person. they can switch from playful to aggressive when it's needed and when properly trained. I don't have any first hand experience with rotts and boerbels tho so I'll leave that for another person to comment. goodluck |
Wizplynfrosh:lol when did I say anything like "are you ready"? I only said that what he was asking for was too much and you know it's true....now if you can't be bothered to read and understand a comment then just keep scrolling. any body that finished secondary school would understand what I said perfectly I don't even know what you're trying to say, you'll just jump up to comment without even thinking |

and you're even asking for pure bred sef do you really think someone is going to give out a pure bred dog from his litter to a stranger that can't afford a dog for free? let's be realistic, I don't mean any disrespect but this is too much to ask. it's not just the first heat of the dog, there are other things involved. vaccines, feeding, medication, grooming equipments, training. e.t.c sorry to say but your passion for dogs isn't enough for the dog to survive and live healthily, you actually need to be financially buoyant to raise a dog, you don't expect someone to give out a pure bred dog that costs at least 50k( for any foreign breed) to go and manage with someone just because the person loves dogs |
Switruth:that doesn't make the dog aggressive, did circumcision have any effect on your temperament as an adult? tail docking is for other reasons not for making the dog aggressive |
are they not too young?, one week old kittens should be with their mother |
Slimstanlie:do you think "game bred" means "pure bred" with pitbulls? does the dog have any fighting history?....game bred is a strong word |
Kelvin30286063:you're welcome ![]() |
Lloydthesaint:how old |
Lloydthesaint:how old |
Lloydthesaint:thank god ![]() |
Savage200:uwlc bro just don't let her play with visitors and strangers, let her just observe them from afar so she won't be intimidated by people. letting her play with strangers too much will desensitize her to strangers. good luck with your beautiful dog ![]() |
Lloydthesaint:ooh that's too bad, didn't you plan for this before getting her? ![]() |
Savage200:cute dog BTW.. |
Savage200:stop chaining her throughout the day she's too young for that abeg. allow her to walk around the compound and get used to her environment and people, if you continue like this you're going to have a very destructive dog with fear aggression and anxiety when she grows up. gsd's are working dogs, they shouldn't even be chained all day even as adults, you could have gone for another breed if you were planning to chain the dog all day. all her pent up energy is just going to make her destructive when you release her at night and it'll make you get tired of the dog. allow her to enjoy her youth let the dog play with you and also walk the dog and expose her to various people, noises and things so you'll have a stable dog in your hands. also, have you ever seen when police dogs are being trained?, do they chain them up all day? noo chaining her all day won't make her a good guard dog it'll just make her unstable and also make her bark at everything but if she is faced with an actual threat she'll fold. it's not good to keep a dog restrained for too long, it has a negative effect on them, it doesn't make them good guard dogs, it will make them bark at people yes but if they hear something like gunshot they'll take off and hide. aggression will kick in when the dog is old enough for now just socialise and train the dog barking doesn't make a guard dog |
Lloydthesaint:why do you want to sell her ![]() |
Lloydthesaint:start leash training her inside the compound first before you take her outside. let her get used to it now before you take her outside so she'll not react badly. sometimes they'll just lie down or refuse to walk with the leash |
Dog4real:the dog is just scared, did you socialise the dog when it was younger? |
Lloydthesaint:if it clears and comes back again occasionally then don't bother yourself it just means she's tired or stressed. my dog's eyes change from red to white depending on his current state. have you started leash training her? |
Lloydthesaint:so what's up with cash? you haven't uploaded in a while |
agbogeh has already said it all, there is nothing left to say. good luck on your dog's recovery, just be careful with what you feed your dogs next time |
yes, as far as the drugs are swallowed by the dog you can administer it how you like |
Kelvin30286063:never give your dogs chicken bones, that's like the worst kind of bone for a dog. it just splinters everywhere and it's harmful to their intestines. if you are worried about their calcium intake, buy calcium tablets or give them soft biscuit bones instead. |
Kelvin30286063:that's a good sign, it most likely not parvo |
agboedeh:it's very sad, I know only one good vet that I can trust here in pH, the rest I just go to them for minor things. some that I will meet for basic things I already know the answer to will be giving me stupid advise that I know is obviously wrong. their is one guy I went to when my dog was stooling because I changed his multivitamins, he told me that multivitamins were not good for dogs and I should give my dog only 1 tablet per week. another one was asking me if I'd be interested in entering my dog into a dog fight he was planning. |
oluomoadebayo:that's another thing I had in mind, they diagnosed the parvo too fast. anyway let him just take the preventive measures for parvo in case they are correct so the other dog won't get infected |
agboedeh:it's true they shouldn't be prescribing drugs and injections for parvo |
Kelvin30286063:sorry I couldn't answer earlier, I had to run some errands quickly. parvo is a deadly disease, I will advice you to clean everywhere that puppy has been in your house with bleach so the other one won't get infected. keep the uninfected puppy away from the infected one, don't let them play together till this ordeal is over. also agbogeh is right, the dog needs to be admitted and also given constant care, make sure the dog is hydrated if not the puppy will die slowly. I'm sorry this happened but you need to know parvo is a 50:50 chance of survival. some dogs survive, some die. just make sure the other puppy is kept away from the infected one so the disease won't spread. I hope your puppy recovers from the virus. |
Kelvin30286063:don't answer this guy, he's just a hopeless romantic who can't find a date who trolls around nairaland pet section with his humourless, crude and stale jokes. he's not going to stop because nothing is going on in his life, he's beneath you don't even answer him. his next move now is to post pics of your dog and put it up for sale repeatedly, just ignore him the insect will buzz away ![]() |
