seminar presentations, especially proposal & post field, can be very humbling experiences.


you go in there fully prepared & believing that your work is fairly solid only for some lecturers to just take the work apart & things that made sense just 10mins ago begin to look so 'dumb'...


but such criticism helps enrich the work & congratulations in advance of your viva voce....


one thing the op left out that can be just as frustrating is the issue of 'Forms' especially in Nigerian universities. you will fill form A, form K, form H etc & some if these forms take months to be processed by the appropriate authorities & it adds to the delays associated with the programme.

You got the idea of how PhDs are run in Nigeria. I have attended several PhD presentations and seminars where the candidates ended up looking like educated fools with all the hard work they've/ they thought they've put in. In the Management Sciences, there also seem to be a lot of disagreement on concepts and methodologies. All of this academic wahala is often transferred to the candidate. But I admire the survivor spirit in many candidates I have come across with.

That's a big gamble as crypto is likely to enter into multi years of ranging. Take a cue from gold (parabolic rise followed by irrational exuberance, and now ranging). The sad part is that no matter how frugal you are, your fund cannot sustain you. You will be surprised at how many people hate their jobs but still have to do it. If Bill Gates, Dangote, Zuckerberg still wake up to go to work, I don't see why you shouldn't. Money is a limited resource.

By the way, crypto is played out. It will die a natural death. Smart money moved funds out in Nov/December. Retail investors will be left holding the bag. History has ways of repeating itself. Crypto is a fad and a gamble. It is never an investment. Like MMM, I expect the noise about crypto to die this year. In less than a month, it went from $10k to $19k. In less than a month, it went from $19k to $7.5k. I feel sorry for retailers.

I gathered some data while conducting research on the efficacy of PPP model in waste management in Lagos metropolis and all I can say is Lagos State got it wrong this time. The LAWMA PSP guys, despite all their challenges and faults, were effective to a considerable extent in many locales. They should have been made to coexist with the CLI, or eased out in phases. From all parts of Lagos I traversed in the past few weeks, Lagos may earn an award soon. And it is not a desirable one!

A seminar will be a very good idea, especially when conducted on-site! I have some little experience in pig farming with my folks while growing up. Dear OP, you have relevant and achievable goals. You have also done well in adding value to yourself in various ways. However, to be relevant and to excel in academics, you need to specialize. Will you say you want to lecture in Biochemistry, IT and Data Security, or in EEE? I will suggest you stick to one field if you want to go far and build a career in academics. The Nigerian university system does not really recognize generalists. I know of someone who had a background in Management Sciences and was lecturing there but went ahead to do a PhD in Social Sciences (Geography for that matter!) The person had to do another PhD in the Management Sciences to be recognized and promoted. Please stick with one specialization, and be very good in it. Peace

There is presently a dearth of antivenom in Nigeria for venomous snakes and we are the in the serpentine season. Please advise her to fumigate the house and its surroundings. She should also install nets and wire mesh on all openings (doors, windows, air vents, etc). Please be safe. Puff adders are savage, and they have no joy!
