Or if it was within the same state would it be different.

budaatum: If their parents could feed them we wouldn't be advocating free school meals, and would be arguing for free university education instead, because that would further increase the tax they end up paying and increase gdp too. We wouldn't however pay for them to get degrees in golf course design, since we are paying for their education.
We only provide free school meals because we see their kids are malnourished and we don't want them ending up brats. Like I said, 98-99% of these kids are already fed And the ones who don't eat, it only makes them tough, rugged and resilient. Secondly I don't know any Primary school student who won't share their food with their classmate who doesn't have, that is the real socialism, the one that comes from the heart, not picking tax payers pockets to solve a problem that doesn't exist. |

budaatum: £2 per week sandwich (I'm certain you mean per day), is not sufficient food for a kid! And, if you feed your child sandwiches every day, it will cost me more providing health care due to their malnutrition.
As for deficits, the UK government spends about £1.4 billion a year on free school meals in England, and will spend £59.8 billion on defence in 2025/26. But I'm certain you are against that too, though do correct me if I'm wrong. The UK Government does not give free school meals past the age of 6. That only applies to Reception, Year 1 and Year 2. Add Year 3 to 6 and your £1.4 bln becomes circa £3.5 bln or 4% of UK Govt budget pre covid |

budaatum: Ibime's concern is cost. Children in care cost more than free meals and transport and education combined.
We here in UK already provide meals for children at home, and its not from schools. To stop 2% of children from eating £2 per week sandwiches doesn't mean you feed 100% of children £15 per week balanced meals That's killing a mosquito with a sledgehammer and part of the reason we keep running massive deficits in the West |

ObaIgwe1: lol, don't play the scripture with me You ignore the emphasis in the scripture you quoted.
Jeremiah 31 Vs 29
'In those days they shall say no more The fathers have eaten sour grapes, And the children’s teeth are set on edge.’
You ignored the part that says "people shall no longer say the proverb of parent eating sour grape and children having bad teeth. Ordinarily children will suffer the consequences of their parents, but in a caring society and in the new covenant of God, children are not supposed to inherit the curses upon their parents.
Read it more clearly from Ezekiel 18:1-4: (NIV)
18 The word of the Lord came to me: 2 “What do you people mean by quoting this proverb about the land of Israel:
“‘The parents eat sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge’?
3 “As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, you will no longer quote this proverb in Israel. 4 For everyone belongs to me, the parent as well as the child—both alike belong to me. The one who sins is the one who will die.
I digress.
In the community I grew up before we started building all these gated houses, (not far from Awolowo's community) even though our fingers were never equal, but the community joined hands to raise all the children. At least to have the basics. All the children will not wear the same cloths or play with the same toys, but my community would now allow a child of school age roaming the streets during school hours. All that is changing now I know, but that is where the government can come in and give a helping hand.
Like you said, a good lunch might not cost up to $2, that is not a lot for government to spend on a kid per day compare to billions of $ wasted somewhere else. No one is asking the government to make all children comfortable like Billionaire kids, we are simply asking that they should be given a chance to survive and thrive. That is a cheaper investment compare to the cost of dealing with the mess they will create when they become nuisances to the society. If we fail to spend that money in feeding a needy child now, we will spend more to feed him/her as an adult in a prison (after a lot of damages and atrocities committed against the society) while we continue to blame the parent. I hail you for the scriptures, however the cost of Government feeding the children is not £2 per week, that's the parents cost Government puts milk. juice, broccoli, carrot, potatoes, pasta, cheese and protein on the childrens table costing about £3 or more per plate per day So instead of parents spending £2 per week taxpayers are now paying like £15 per week to balance their plate |

ObaIgwe1: Isaiah 49:15-17: Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? yea, they may forget.
Ibime, my wife and I support a number of NGOs that look after children welfares... I tell you, there are so many irresponsible parents out there that should have no business having kids. The worse are those who have the money yet neglect these children. Father with money to buy cigarettes, drugs and gamble yet spare nothing for the kids... Mothers with money for hair, make-up and fashion yet give no damn about their kids. The father blames the mother and the mother faults the father while the child is left to go hungry. Should we also allow the child to remain hungry while blaming the parents?
Honestly it sounds funny but I agree with budaatum, some humans need to be checked and given license before having kids. These will all be noticed in the children's uniform and hygiene and intervention should be be made at that point, we do not need to cover up their negligence by feeding their children Here's a bible verse for you Jeremiah 31 Vs 29 In those days they shall say no more: ‘The fathers have eaten sour grapes, And the children’s teeth are set on edge.’ There is nowhere on earth where childrens quality of life is not determined by their parents but in totality, almost all parents try to match society's expectations of school meal and uniform, unless they are on drugs, at which point the children will/should be taken from them anyway. As I dey here, some children are flying private Jet or in private education but not my children. Who will provide equity for my children? We can't equalise everybody. |

budaatum: You know very well there's lots of irresponsible or just hard up parents in the unthird world country you live in who can not feed their kids. And that's not a reason to put them in care which costs a lot more than just helping their parents feed them. Besides, they'd be very unhealthy, and a liability to the socialist health care system, so we better feed them before they become a greater liability.
Having hungry children in your child's class will negatively impact your child's education, because their hungry rumbling stomach will distract the entire class. This is a myth propagated by the food bank industry In low income neighbourhoods, kids are fatter on average. There is no death of sustenance, only death of quality food. A simple review of benefit payments shows that feeding is the last problem you expect on any benefits budget and any parent sending their child to school without food is negligent Speaking as a child from lowest income household as a teenager with my mum working as a teaching assistant when we first returned from Nigeria, and my father in Nigeria, I never failed to have Wagon wheels, crisps and sandwich in my lunchbox. That was a single low income household with 5 kids to support, so I'm not buying any lamba about poverty. Even when I moved out of the house at 16, I got a weekend job that paid me £140 per week. From that £140, I paid my own rent, travelled to college everyday, ate well and had savings. People need to stop making excuses while their parents are puffing 20 cigarettes per day. Unfortunately it's not Govts job to legislate for quality of food. Hunger is well taken care of by any job or benefits system. On an average day if you offer kids vegetables or fruits, they will hardly eat anyway, same as we did in Nigeria. Thankfully kids mostly use excess carbs and sugar for vertical growth rather than horizontal. |
