raumdeuter: Most footballer and coaches of those days smoke heavily
This is a sight children of nowadays will never see. Nigga will just be smoking Cohibas from minute 0 to 90 while dominating Serie A and UCL. The ultimate Cigar smoking boss!
afrodoc2: Decent defender and tough customer. But all those fouls and red cards in that video just highlight suspect positioning and limited pace.
That Juve defensive unit was very good based on the defensive midfield shield, the keeper behind them and of course their Italian coaching and mind set. However IMO none of the central defenders was individually world class, Montero included.
You could say the same about Bonucci and co today then. You cannot judge 1990s with the eyes of today. Pace was not an issue for centrebacks then. A defender could comfortably be World Class without pace eg Baresi, Adams and co. If you describe all these defenders as limited, then add Deschamps and Conte who were also limited, is that not supposed to be a West Brom style of team? However 3 UCL finals in a row begs to differ, not to mention a further final in 2003 plus semis in 1999. Nah, these guys were class. Breaking Juventus defence then was the hardest thing in football, and if you break it, Montero would hack you down and take one for the team.
afrodoc2: Montero was very rugged no doubt but he was never top class in my view. Way too many fouls and red cards. In this era he would have been a Stoke City defender. Baresi, Maldini, Nesta, Carvalho, Desailly, Adams had more controlled aggression and hence more accuracy with their tackles.
Everyone has his style. Baresi, Maldini, Adams hardly tackled, however Paolo Montero was top class even with his agbero ways. Despite all his cards, he was a sure banker for Juventus for 9 years, and they were (arguably) the strongest and most consistent club side in the world during the period Paolo played for them. The triumvirate of Mark Juliano, Paolo Montero and Ciro Ferrara were like cash in the bank, with Alessio Tacchinardi sometimes dropping in. Of those, Montero and Ferrara were the most respected.
expialidocious: Struck down but not destroyed. Show me a Nation which recovered as quickly as the Igbos after 3 years of attempted genocide... Igbos had to start afresh, forfeiting properties acquired all over the country while the ones back at home were destroyed... But today, it has been restored in thousand folds. So tell me, why wouldn't they be jealous??
Go and check what Rwanda did within a few years. Comparing Igbo land to Rwanda is like comparing Enyimba to Barcelona. Don't let the backwardness of the North set low standards for you. Igbo land is very much underdeveloped and decrepit.
I'm surprised no one mentioned the biggest agbero, Paolo Montero of Uruguay and Juventus. This guy was the enfant terrible of the 1990s and would make Pepe look like a kitten.
Griffon: This Franck Yannick Kessie na confirm fraud.
I can't believe €50m was quoted for this ninja couple of months ago. I can't believe this scam was dubbed the 'next Yaya Toure' just few months back.
The entire Europe dodged a bullet here, Ac Milan were just unfortunate. Downside of reckless spending i guess.
I don't like any midfielder whose only game is to carry the ball and run. Once I watch a midfielder and I see his first move is not to trap the ball, turn and lift head for the pass, I jump and pass. I noticed exactly the same about Kessie.
Thecassanova: Bakayoko should not be making tackles. He's too huge for that, ref can't overlook it. He should leave tackle business to Kante. That's what Magic did last season.
Bakayoko is too big to be leaning on players, giving away dangerous freekicks almost every game. He is always laying hands before tackling like some sort of pastor.
raumdeuter: I remember either here on Man Utd thread some were shouting to buy Aurier and someone maybe Ibime warned of his erratic and senseless behaviour on and off the field
How many games has he started wey he don collect red
The guy is a nutcase. Africans don't usually behave like him. He behaves like someone without home training.
Roland17: In the past, it was deemed disrespectful not to tuck in your jersey, infact, referees mandated players to tuck their jerseys. Now, I doubt any player tucks his jersey while playing.
Thats quite foolish of them. Tucking in your jersey is an advantage because players cannot easily pull your shirt if you get away from them.
raumdeuter: LMAO. Emile Mpenza, Na the type nina wey dey outscore Hidden hazard for Belgium
The Emile Mpenza sef, Na lokondo Mpenza me I sabi am to be, He come go change name to Emile
There were 2 Mpenza brothers. The 2nd one faded shortly after Euro 2000. You're probably thinking they're the same person.
I was just reminiscing over Romario skills and watching his old youtube videos which is what led me eventually to the list of Brazil all-time goalscorers. Seeing Neymars name at the age of 26 threatening the top of that list, and amongst nothing but WPOTY winners was really a cause for sober reflection. Hazard has to win World Cup otherwise 30 years from now, he would get no more mention than Enzo Scifo and co while Neymars name will be living with Pele, Romario, Ronaldo forever even if he retires today.
raumdeuter: The 92 team I remembered one of their games the quarter finals vs Cote d voire. NEPA carry light for second half so na transistor radio I follow the commentary on Radio Nigeria. I dey hear names like Chikabala, John Soko
After the crash they built the team of the 2 Malitolis and Elijah Litana Keeper Phiri and Kalusha. After Westerhof removed Okocha for Ugbade na so the midfield collapse, Dem even hit bar sef. Na God save us that day
Shey na Elijah Litana score that header for final? That guy was a beast, the John Mensah or Kurt Zouma of his time. We get luck that day true true.
E get one light-skinned Mali player with dada hair wey I dey try remember him name. The guy that downed Tunisia. Shey na Coulibaly? My players of that tournament were him, Kalusha, Malitoli brothers, Litana, Michel Basole, Joel Tiehi, Alain Maguy, Oliseh, Finidi, Ben Iroha and Yeking.
raumdeuter: Ibime. I know Kalusha wanted to join the team later and missed the flight, I didn't know about Musonda
Who remembered that Zambia team that died in 1993.
I remember John Soko, Chikabala Keeper chabala. That team did well at the Olympics and at Senegal 92.
I don't remember that team. Though I watched Senegal 92, my brain was too young to process. How they resurrected to reach AFCON final just few months later is a story for the ages. I remember, was it Mali they flogged 4-0 in the semi-final? Mali had previously knocked out Egypt who were the only team that could beat us in that Tournament, yet they disgraced Mali in the semi. Mali had also knocked out hosts Tunisia in the group stage. Honestly those boys deserved something from that tournament, they even pushed the greatest Super Eagles team close in the final.
It was very befitting that Zambia won the 2012 AFCON in Libreville, just a few miles from the plane crash site.
When in 1993, the Zambian National Football team suffered a plane crash killing eighteen first team players and several officials, one player survived because he didn't honour the invitation for the match. His name, Charles Musonda, father to Chelsea's youngster, Charly Musonda.
One version holds that his club's coach convinced him not to honour the national team's call while another holds that he was truly injured and could not have joined the team in Lusaka. Either way, he missed the flight. And he missed a most likely death too.
chrisooblog: that said the current nff people have worked a bit on those issues you rightly pointed out
I think every now and then we get a moment of sanity and consistency in Nigerian football such as Rohr has brought over the last year, or even Amodu in 2013 or Westerhof in the early 90s.
Don't think these issues are under the carpet. As of summer last year, Super Eagles were almost forced to board a flying coffin to Rio Olympics, and arrived in Brazil within only 24 hours of their match. Who wants that kind of drama in their career?
Wait till Rohr leaves Eagles after World Cup, and Eguavoen is back as acting manager. Of the 23 players that went to World Cup, Eguavoen will get rid of 18 of them, and bring in his parapo players. That is the cycle of Naija football. This is the first time I'm ever seeing Naija keep roughly the same team for 2 years in a row since Westerhof.
