Gravity has turned their motion into a parabola so they only have to survive the vertical drop, not hit the ground running. Both ways he is dead on arrival.

We all scrambled for bus after school so I went and placed myself at the most advantageous position to get a seat on the bus which was unfortunately in the path of where the bus was just stopping.
