The madness is even more pronounced than you thought:

"We bought Tonelli and Maksimovic not because we didn't believe in our own, but ahead of the AFCON [held in early 2017]. Tonelli had already played with Sarri, and we had tried to get Maksimovic for nearly two years. But the defense was already well equipped. It's just not a rumor that Chelsea offered more than 50 million for [Koulibaly], it's true we rejected it."

-Aureli De Laurentiis, Napoli Owner.

More than 50m!!!!! For Koulibaly?!!!!

Thank God they rejected it sef. What nonsense.
That is Euros, not pounds. Na £40m we bid last last.

Alonso can't be that bad though. The Serie A is a grooming ground for good defenders. Their tactical knowledge of the game is what I admire most. It's more of technique than brutality.

I just hope the Spaniard learnt one or two vital lessons there.
Alonso was very good at Sunderland.

He had looked OK at Bolton but something was holding him back. They had a dependable old school left back then plus he was having off field issues because he killed someone in a car crash and was on trial.

I personally think he is better than say Jonas Hector but given his low profile I am surprised at the fee.

I think he could surprise a lot of ninjas.

Emenalo has already given Conte the credit for Kante in case you missed it. Why should I bother.

I know my club, I know the characters and their outlook on football.

I am against Luiz signing but I won't pin it on Emenalo.

Alonso I actually rate as decent, but so is Ake.

You can't blame Emenalo for Luiz.

Luiz is a personal favourite of Abramovic.

PSG offered Luiz to Chelsea earlier in the week, Abramovic was keen, Conte was initially lukewarm but gave his blessing yesterday when it looked like nothing else would materialise.
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) › Re: Official Chelsea Fan Thread: Club World Cup Champions 2025-2029 by Ibime(m):
Conte is fully in charge of transfer direction this window.

We saw it in all the players we were linked with - every single one of them was down the central spine of the team.

If Emenalo was calling shots, you will hear the usual rigmaroll of Chelsea chasing 100 wingers. Emenalo did not even get a penny to spend on loan army this window. We signed 4 very young players for pennies for the development squad

The Luiz signing had Contes blessing. Luiz was not on his wishlist, but on deadline day, after failing to land CB targets, the club told him Luiz was available and he approved. It does not concern Conte that Luiz only has 4 years left in his legs. Conte will be gone within 3 years like every Chelsea manager.

Whether he was crap and had to be sold is open for debate. Its not like his replacements have been better. Even you cannot justify the players that have been bought in his stead

You woulda needed probably £35-40m to buy Rodriguez. Assuming Wolfsburg even wanted to sell.

Hector is already 26. Another short term pickup most probably

Na the T.V deal give una wiggle room to keep up this riotous spending. Almost £60m in 3 seasons at LB when keeping your youth woulda been the better option, any other business go done fold up
I think Ake is at least comparable to Alonso

I think in that koulibaly deal, napoli didn't want to sell to us. we started negotiating with napoli right from the beginning of transfer upto a week before the deadline day, submitted series of deals even up-to 50 MIL £ yet napoli refused to sell even when koulibaly made it clear he wants to leave.. yet they refuse conte had to look for other options. maybe that's why we went for Luiz. koulibaly failed move was caused by napoli
No, we made a final bid at £40m. Napoli wanted £50m.

I supported drawing the line at £40m. . . . but to go and buy Luiz for £34m is even crazier than refusing to pay £50m for Koulibaly.

Aside my disappointment over the crazy fee spent on Luiz, I would say we have had an above average transfer window by our standards.

We all identified LB, CB, CM and CF as our needs for the season and that is exactly what we got.

We got a great CM and Striker in Kante and Batsuayi

And I would say a serviceable LB and CB in Alonso and Luiz, although the price is highly questionable.

This makes a great change from previous seasons when one Aba made clown was running things. This is the first window in a long time when Chelsea were not even linked with a single winger expect maybe Gabigol.

We did not hear of any interest in Talisca, Taison, Bruma, Kenedy, Adrian, Willian, Atsu, and hundred other wingers like the Aba-made TD likes to do every season.

Even though we did not get our first choice LB and CB, we still bought in the positions we needed. That is a good transfer window in my opinion considering.

3 year loan for Cuadrado

£57m for Marcos Alonso and David Lulz

Bizarre is the only word that comes to my mind rn
The loan is just a way of easing the loss on Cuadrado until the end of his contract. The loan is £4.2m a year over 3 years = £12.6m loan fees.

Add the £1.5m loan fee from last year, then we have recouped £14m from him.

We spent £26.3m on him, plus he has cost us £2.7m in wages in his time with Chelsea. Total Cost is £29m.

That is a £15m loss over 4.5 years.

He's Okay as a short to medium term fix but you didn't take into account his age. Luiz will be 30 before this season is finished. The same Chelsea who claim to only offer 1 year contracts to players aged 30+ spending £32m plus prolly 5 year massive contract to a player his age? Does that sound like consistent policy or good long term planning?

oga, chelsea sold luiz for £50m(record signing) and nt £37m and cahill never benched luiz for a year.
Go and check your facts. We sold Luiz for £37m, not the £50m widely reported.

Cahill benched Luiz the whole season in 2013/14 from September onward. In January Jose decided his midfield wasn't working and started deploying Luiz in midfield. Luiz only started 15 EPL games that season, probably half of them in midfield. When I say your typical fans have no memory of history, you have just come and proved me right.

Stones makes plenty of Mistakes and is still highly rated...and cost 50M! David Luiz may have 2-3 defensive mistakes leading to a goal this year but the upside is just as beneficial to a team: a defender that can help open the opposition with incisive passing, comfortable with the ball at his feet, can deputise in midfield for added protection or in case of injuries and a wonderful personality around on the club off the pitch, in training, etc. In the running for the EPL, just imagine the pressure and intensity Manchester players will face with Guardiola and Mourinho on a daily basis. Chelsea will have characters like Costa, Zouma and Luiz to lighten the mood and keep everyone stress free.
John Stones is 22. Luiz is 29 and has shown he is incapable of learning. Wetin you dey yarn?

This deal makes John Stones look cheap.

Niggas done forget say Gary Cahill sat David Luiz on the bench for a year under Mourinho who knows a thing or two about defending. David Luiz was never better than Gary Cahill in their 3 years together, so why do we lose all common sense and spend crazy money over Luiz who is even Gary Cahills age mate.

Most Chelsea fans have no memory of history. The same niggas that celebrated selling him for £37m now celebrating buying him back for £32m? Crazy emotional folks!

The same David Luiz wey Brazil done pursue from their squad.

Include the reported £17m Man shitty paid for a 33 year old Bravo. IMO it's far too much
That is overpriced but Luiz deal takes the cake.

Bravo will play another 5 years, same as Luiz because keepers go till 38

If money was the reason they declined Koulibaly deal then they have just proved they have more money than sense.

Koulibaly at £50m is a better deal financially than Luiz at £32m, based on age alone, much less ability.

I would rather have played the season and wait for Christensen than go for Luiz.

Atsu is crap abeg.

He played only 139 minutes of UCL football and 17 league games in his ONE and ONLY season for Porto and, and was moved on for relative change, so I'm not sure how invested Porto were in the guy.

It's not that difficult to be best player at AFCON. A couple of months ago there was a big disvussion on the Manyoo thread about the apparent lack of tactically aware African footballers.

Atsu has gone to Everton and flopped. Same Everton that were so desperate for wingers that they signed Deulofeu and Aaron Lennon on loan and later purchased them outright. Deulofeu is even younger than Atsu sef and he saw shirt.

Atsu was compering with thr likes of Aiden Mcgeady and Arouna Kone for space on the flank. Considering how crap these guys were, any decent winger would have gotten the nod on that left flank at least.

At Bournemouth the story is even worse, Matt Ritchie had the right wing locked, but on the left flank there was virtually no competition. Max Gradel was injured all season, and Eddie Howe chose to play Marc Pugh(a 10) at left wing instead of the Afcon best left winger.

If you can't get a shirt at not 1, not 2 but THREE EPL clubs, then you're definitely not EPL material
The point actually was on the loan system not a moratorium on whether Atsu is good enough for Chelsea, which he probably isn't.

One thing is sure though, if he is good enough for Porto, he is good enough to get minutes for Bournemouth.

Don't look at Wikipedia and tell me reh reh reh about stuff you didn't witness. In the season we signed Atsu, he broke into the Porto first team from February onwards and was a Porto first team player which I saw with my own eyes.

All of a sudden, the nigga won't even be considered for bench at Bournemouth.

Ayew brothers and Asamoah Gyan were in the same Ghana team at AFCON 2015, why didn't they win AFCON best player?
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) › Re: Official Chelsea Fan Thread: Club World Cup Champions 2025-2029 by Ibime(m): 12:06am On Aug 30, 2016
Christian Atsu joins Newcastle on loan.

This is for the naysayers who like to say "he failed on loan at xyz so he can't be good enough".

Christian Atsu, a Porto player, Champions league player and CAF best player at African Cup of Nations 2015 has failed on loan at Everton and Bournemouth.

Apart from a couple of unfortunate injuries, the key difference is that Porto owned and were invested in the player while Everton and Bournemouth gave 2 phucks about his progression.
