Question - How do we raise our kids to have aptitude for mathematics?

I believe it's the bedrock and foundation for STEM courses and would want my kids to do STEMs.

Me, I was average in it and wifey though a first class & distinction graduate read sociology.

Though its early days, my 6-year old in Basic 2 is already showing a dislike for it and grumbles whenever its time to do Maths home work.
Find Numberblocks on YouTube, incentivise them to watch it religiously and thank me later

My son found Numberblocks on his own and knew all his timetables, prime numbers, square numbers etc by age 4. He could even extend it further and be doing 13 times, 14 times up to 20 times by adding up. He has changed his watching interest from Numberblocks in the last two years but you can't catch him out with any addition, multiplication or division till date. He has even started Algebra and can find X in a simple equation from age 6

His senior sister on the other hand struggled with timestable till age 8 so I had to start bribing her with £1 per Numberblocks video till she completed her timetable recently. Mind you she was still top 3 in Maths in her class but the constant praise of her Junior brothers proficiency in Maths wrecked her confidence and made her feel inferior such that she would not look at timestable or attempt any Maths. Sometimes she would be doing homework, calculating and counting her fingers furiously and her Junior brother will just shout out the answer within one second, infuriating her and wrecking her confidence. So I had to have a talk with her to explain that her brother is exceptional and not to pay him any mind, while laying out bribes for her to learn timestable and hanging timestable on her wall for her to inculcate every night before bed.

In SS1 they automatically place extremely brilliant students in Science class irrespective of what they decide . You will only be placed in art or commercial if u insist.
We are making the same point. Sharp students in science and dunces in Arts. I don't recall specifically making a choice in SS1, Science was always a given. The choice is usually with the dunces in Arts who want to do Science and have to make their will be known. But the choice is there.

If you have been sitting in an area of class with sharp minds like Bode, Souala and Arinze from JSS1 to 3, sharp irons who also sharpen your iron, you will not willingly go and sit with Mumudu and Portable in Arts class who you have known as dunces since JSS1, that's recipe to dull yourself.

Well, I my time nobody lets u decide ur specialization in JSS class when u’ve not been tested to know where u would actually fit in as per ur performance .

It’s in Senior secondary class the talking specialization came into the picture . We clearly studied under two different education system .
It's in SS1 you decide after everybody done know themselves for Junior Secondary. Nobody decides for you. Are you telling me you were decided for?

In my school u write JSCE set by Lagos state ministry of education in JSS3 and that is what they normally use in determining what department to place students in Senior secondary class.

They don’t just ship people JSS3 A to science class in SS1 . That is why I kept on telling u to stop generalizing .
Nobody ship anybody to science class. In my time we all choose our specialisations and the A class students all choose Science while the dunces in B-D choose Arts. Even the smartest nigga in my class that knew he wanted to become a lawyer chose Science, and he is a lawyer now.

I recently realized that Biology is very simple and I could have been a doctor if laziness didn’t stop me from keeping up with writing lengthy notes.
If you read a Radiologist report on a scan, you will know you don't know Biology

Simple case of scanning your knee to discover the extent of cartilage damage, you will think the Radiologist report will be easy to assess until you start to read grammar and terms wey you no understand. Eventually you will have to let the Orthopod interpret everything that nigga wrote.

A science student who can smash non-STEM is an all-rounder by definition.
I would argue there is no good science student that won't pass Arts courses well with one night revision. Not a single one.

Lolz .😂

So who told u art and commercial students don’t pass maths and English excellently well as much as their science counterparts ?

U can only speak for urself and the people u know . The science students in my set still respect me till date. E get reason why. I made my O’levels writing GCE in SS2 while they called it their own first attempt which they made some papers and didn’t make some . They either had D7 in English or Maths making their result incomplete .

You people should just stop generalizing based on ur personal experiences .
Speak for yourself. We know how far on average

E get reason why those in class A from JSS 1-3 ended up as Science students in Senior secondary while those in classes B-D in Junior secondary starting forming Art student in Senior Secondary

I don't know how your school separated students on ability but we know ourselves right from JSS 1 based on class A to D system

The secondary school education in Nigeria is diffent what obtains in the UK .
An Art student should finish Maths in Nigeria. Based on their scores in Maths, you can tell whether they have it upstairs or it's Cho Cho Cho

I'm willing to bet that STEM students score better in English than non STEM students

You can use these two subjects as control mechanism

If u sabi book , u sabi book. It has nothing to do with art ,science or commercial .

I won’t smash government in JAMB if u don’t study for it. Make una no Dey gas una sef up abeg . Neither will u smash economics .
A science student will smash Government and all those other nonsense courses with one day revision or just general knowledge picked up from radio, TV or suya wrappers.

As an example, I smashed A in GCSE Geography without opening book one day. Just from general knowledge and simple classroom attendance without any revision. Same with English GCSE. I mixed up the exam date, received a phone call from the Headteacher who said I haven't arrived for exam and he is sending an A Level student to my house to pick me up. Luckily my house was 5 mins drive from school. I arrived 30 mins late for a 2 hour exam, still finished 30 mins early and collected B with zero revision. Mind you till today I don't know difference between pronoun, adjective and adverb. I just know how words fit together. Same thing for English literature which I sparked with zero revision. The reading of the books in class was enough. The only subjects I studied for were Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Biology and I sparked everything except French where I collected C.

afrodoc2:
I get your general point, but you mentioned earlier that some people are all-rounders. An all-rounder will tell you that a subject like Government is easier than subjects like Physics/Mathematics/Chemistry.
There is nothing like all rounder. You only have science students who can do non-STEM courses with their eyes closed, while non-STEM students go dey Cho Cho Cho. Even with non-STEM, the lawyers were great science students who only specialised toward law after finishing STEM at secondary school level to a high level

Very true. Even in Southern Kaduna. The Chinese are doing the same thing.
That's what US General meant by Traore stealing Burkinabe gold. They will gather Wagner boys and start extracting minerals without recognised agreement with the National Government and Traore will benefit personally but no formal agreement with the country. That's what US General meant but all of a sudden, it means US wants to invade Burkina, as if US wants to get involved in another war with terrorists in the Sahel.

The other day User09 was decrying the fact that GE was not given guarantee to run our DISCOs. Instead it was given to friends of the President. Had GE been given DISCO contract, I'm sure nzombu nzombu people will claim they are ripping Nigeria. Oya do am yourself if it easy.

It is only people from non numeric or non economics background that buy these communist arguments. Anyone who looks at numbers know these arguments are hogwash. France which has a yearly trade deficit of $12bln with subsaharan Africa is somehow ripping Africa.

Oya free yourself if it easy. What is more fundamental to your economic liberty than having your own currency and exiting the currency administrated by your so called biggest enemy? Yet they refuse to exit Frances currency because they know what France is doing for them. They just rabble rouse against France for stüpid people so they can grab power.

Na you dey dey swallow western propaganda hook, line and sinker. The AFRICOM commander appeared before a US senate committee and accused Traore and his junta of taking all the gold for themselves. At least, they are Burkinabes right? When France was siphoning Burkina Faso's gold, milking and exploiting the country, why hin no talk? Whether you accept it or not, the truth is the west has launched a coordinated counter propaganda against Burkina Faso because the milk is no more flowing their way. Simple!

As for the presidents of Niger and Guinea not being known or popular, it's because they lack charisma and do not espouse the bold, fiery rhetoric that threatens the west like Ibrahim Traore.
Which milk Burkina Faso get?

Let's start with the biggest lie that France is keeping them down with CFA currency while France has been subsidising their currency for decades to keep their currency stable. How many years now and they refused to float their own currency, back it with their reserves, do what it takes to show they can maintain their own currency strength like Nigeria and Ghana are finding out, and prove that France has been keeping them down. This is the biggest lie and proof of their lamba.

While it is true that Europeans exploited Africa during Colonial era, European approach to Africa has been net positive for over 30 years since the early 90s with changing attitudes and a European public that demands fair dealings with Africa. This includes forgiveness of tens of billions of debts in the early 2000s and continuous bail outs and lowest interest loans, yet we would keep blaming anyone but ourselves.

This is not 1900s to 1970. France is not stealing their gold, nor will their gold make 0.001% difference to Frances economy. Imagine a country with $20bln GDP claiming they are feeding a $3trln GDP economy. Africans have serious problems with numbers.

You just threw out nonsense without backing about their gold being stolen. There is no single Western company in Africa mining without internationally recognised and documented mining agreement with the host Government, unlike their new friends China and Russia mining everywhere without agreement including in our own Zamfara. France is heavily subsidising their country even now. If it sure them, they should exit CFA and debunk this as the litmus test.

The highest growth economy in West Africa today after Cape Verde is Ivory Coast who are performing well in hock with the same France while foolish people are doing nzombu nzombu and bringing arguments from 1960s and 1970s to justify foolishness. Some will still be talking about World Bank and WTO keeping Africa down in big 2025 while their daughter Okonjo Iweala is running those organisations. Una go well one day

How I differentiate those with sense from those without na who dey buy easily fact checkable lies from AI generated videos about Traore

The US General statement that Traore is stealing gold is what prompted all the Tiktok propaganda videos that America wants to invade Burkina Faso. As if US send them before.

He said he's paid debt while debt is increasing. Simple Google search people no gree do.

He claimed he overthrew the previous Government because they weren't successful in fight against terrorism yet terrorist have taken over 60% of his country from the 20-30% of the previous Government

No worry, na here we go dey, we will see how far this propaganda changes the life of the average Burkinabe in the next 5 years without France to blame. If France was not holding up their currency even now, they would have collapsed into anarchy. imagine someone giving you steroid and you are using the same steroid to fight them. If it sure them, they should exit the stable French currency

No doubt there’s some PR involved but I think his popularity is organic. I watched the inauguration of Ghana’s president, John Mahama, and Traore received the loudest cheers and ovation.

As for Burkina Faso being a glorified dustbin, that’s due to decades of exploitation by France and the West which Traore is now trying to reverse.

Traore has pivoted towards Russia, and this has infuriated the West which has launched their own counter PR using the normal playbook of accusations such as corrupt enrichment, human rights violations, suppression of civil liberties etc.

In all these, it's important to be able to sift through the sponsored propaganda to discern the truth.
There is no video of Traore that is not a lie. Egbon like you done fall for that guy propaganda. The guy dey dey dish propaganda steady and sensible people will call it out. Nobody know Niger and Guinea President name so no, there is no propaganda against Traore, just a reaction to his constant lies and brainwashing of Africans

But Tinubu famously stated: "na data we go chop"?
I did some consulting work commissioned by one of his ministers last year and what I heard was that he loves to review dashboards every morning and is always gingering for all the Nations numbers to be better presented to him in dashboard form everyday. You can see that in his work history in Lagos. Numbers can't escape him, that's why he could create a whole new revenue source from nothing and continue chopping from it for decades through alpha beta. In numbers game, he is a don.

Our total external debt is $40bln plus, IMF was just over $1bln of it. You still have Eurobonds and World Bank as our biggest debt stocks, plus African Development Bank, China and so on. IMF is just a headline but fairly immaterial

I came across a report earlier this year saying we’ve repaid about $1.22 billion to the IMF, reducing our debt from $3.26 billion in June 2023 to $1.16 billion by June 2024—a 64% drop in just 12 months. It also mentioned that the IMF extended the repayment deadline from 2026 to 2027, giving us more time to sort things out. I didn’t realise Tinubu’s government was paying it down this early.
