Acidosis: So people see polygamy as anti-dote for cheating?
You have to realize that most polygamous homes today started as monogamy. So what happened along the line? Cheating happened Polygamy starts by cheating on the first wife.
Bottom line is simple; a useless man will always remain a useless man. No specific type of marriage (polygamy, poly-whatever) can take the place of commonsense, discipline and respect for self. Yeah cheating on her, or flat out telling her, knowing she would not be happy with it but couldn't do anything about it or leave a life she had already invested in behind easily. So she just ends up 'falling in line'. @OP As I am now, I couldn't do it Maybe I would if my life prospects were a lot less promising |

I've found that men handle rejection better, in the long run, since they go through it more and are used to it
As for the two people in a relationship, the person who invested or cared more will naturally handle a heartbreak the worst
As for male and females generally, we deal with it..differently, whichever is 'better' is a matter of opinion I guess.
Females tend to have more of an emotional support system since socially, it isn't a big deal for girls to be emotional, thus they tend to be provided with a 'healthier' space to grieve the relationship as soon as it ends
Males, on the other hand, aren't encouraged to express their emotions publicly. More often than not, they'll end up dealing with it by themselves or (if they're lucky) a VERY small handful of people who they probably can’t be vulnerable with because it isn’t considered ‘manly’. I've found that they usually do things to 'distract' themselves and fill the void vs actually 'tackling through’ it, at first anyway, then it 'hits' them later
This is just what I've noticed, there will always be exceptions obviously |

Blackmiserable: I don't think there is any sentiments in wanting a name from your region regardless of who is doing the asking. The woman in question is a northerner. Sentiments can be attached to anything, it's usually a personal thing |
Family › Re: How Would You Feel As A Woman? by ibkayee(f): 3:20pm On Apr 03, 2020 |
delishpot: So what if uour husband also wants a particular name? The only issue here is of the husband foes not permit the wife to even pick a name for her child. I would rather my child bear the name of the culture he is identified with. If hubby is Igbo, and child is olawale and child is expected to thrive in an Igbo community, how does that work? Best bet is for the child to be given a neutral name eg Nelson If my husband wants a particular name, we can discuss it, who knows, maybe he has a 'better' reason than mine. It's not a deal breaker nor a big deal in the first place for me. My point is that if the choice over a name were down to sentimental value vs just ' custom', I wouldn't be AS willing to just go with whatever he wanted, otherwise I'm not that fussed As for the 'community' you're talking about, you're adding new factors to this discussion, I wasn't thinking of all that. Funnily enough, the OP said his friend's children are in the North, bearing Yoruba names |

delishpot: If she no like the husbands tribe, why not marry a man from her village so that her child will bear the name from the tribe she likes? Its silly to marry from a people you won't feel comfortable identifying with. Lol why are you turning it into this? It's not that she doesn't like the husband's tribe, it's about children not completely losing their identity in favour of another. It's not an unreasonable point @Blackmiserable Most people I know give their children names from both tribes, but it's just tradition for the child's 'first' name to be from their father's side. Maybe this is the case with your friend? But I get your point, since the 'other' names are technically 'hidden' lol. Most of these things are just down to 'custom', rooted in patriarchy, yes lol that's a story for another day, most people don't think it's a big deal, or don't care enough to bother 'changing' anything I don't think I'm that fussed, but if there was a name that I really wanted my child to bear and be referred to, I don't think I'd be as willing to forfeit it with my husband over so called 'custom' |

asapeola: I swear! Goto police stations and c constables "settling" cases of domestic violence! Its not as if some women or men (as the case maybe) were silent until death but the system stacks up against them.

roseb1: Now This is the problem I have with most of y'all here in nairaland. You come online and be blabbing as self righteous persons but in reality y'all hypocrite. I can put it to y'all that non of u will arrest ur blood for such a heinious crime. Instead it will be resolved as a family matter. I actually get what you're saying, I don't think you're saying he doesn't deserve serious punishment for the heinous crime, but that if we look at the pattern of Nigerians, the average would 'settle' it as a family matter or worse, sweep it under the rug. Nigeria's 'system' is designed in such a way that both allows and forces this kind of response. It's f*cked up and I wish that idiot would get the punishment deserves I don't think the people asking for him to be arrested are 'hypocrites' per se though, they know how bad their country is and more than likely want justice, despite the system that's set up against this, but they can't exactly tell the OP to settle it with family...not that simple either I wish these things were taken more seriously in Nigeria, it's so sickening, poor little girl. The legal system is just useless, especially when you don't belong to a certain social class |
