CrimeRe: Nigerians Commence #StopRapingWomen Protest Against Sexual Assaults by ibkayee(f): 5:48pm On Jun 01, 2020

You think people are not aware of the problem? You think majority of Nigerian men and women don't know that rape is bad? Awareness is not the problem, enforcement is what's missing! We have laws in 9ja but if you're rich or religiously connected, you can beat it! This is the difference with advanced countries, rape still happens over there but 90% of the time, the culprits are dealt with with the maximum pressure of the law.
I know, we're saying the same thing. I just don't think these protests are completely useless, I know how corrupt the system is but even a nudge still better than nothing in my opinion

The penalty for rape is 7yrs or 15yrs.
Thanks but a culture that trivialises rape can also permeate the legal system, it's a bit more complex than just pointing out what the writing says is what I mean

abbey621:
Can you name one positive change that such protest in 9ja has accomplished in the last 6 or 7 years? COZA, Sowore, El-Zhakky, Kanu,SARs etc?
Protests are not a guarantee for change, but they bring awareness and pressure and that's better than nothing

abbey621:
I see this as a total waste of time, you are better off arming women with pepper sprays, knives and even a gun than useless protest on social media that will have ZERO effect on the situation. Women were raped in 1990s, in the 2000s, in 2010s and 2020s will remain the same.
It's not useless, whether the government respond to it or not, it's a way of adding pressure, and possibly opening up conversations about reforming parts of the law when it comes to the subject of rape
CrimeRe: Nigerians Commence #StopRapingWomen Protest Against Sexual Assaults by ibkayee(f): 5:10pm On Jun 01, 2020
The roots of the problem are both the culture and the laws.

A culture that normalises rape and treats it as a misdemeanor
And laws that barely punish the perpetrators or don't punish them at all

Rapists are enabled and sometimes even coddled, something needs to happen man, it's toooo much

Human to human, do you think this is the right thing to say?

22 year old raped in the church
12 year old raped by 11 men
9 year old raped by her own father

And this is what you could come up with?

[s]You see when she used a tragedy to make generalist statement she shouldn't be surprised when it starts a huge fight that distracts from the message she was trying to pass along.

For example there was a baby abandoned in Anambra last week, if I was a celebrity and used that instance to label igbos or women what do you think would happen? [/s]

It's EXTREMELY disgusting. In this part of the world a lady can't even visit a guy at home without them thinking that it is then ok to penetrate her forcefully. Goes to show their state of mind. Worse than animals. And they wonder why the rest of the world considers them not yet civilized.
They fight harder to find faults in the victim than they do castigating the perpetrator

They will keep blaming victims until it happens to be their daughter, sister, mother or wife. Until then they will tell us where to go, how to look, what to wear, how to behave instead of putting the blame where it belongs. It's like me telling them that it is their fault if armed robbers attack their house at night and kill their family because they should not live in a nice house in the first place.
pocohantas:
Gbam!!! They will say things like “don’t keep goat and yam together”. Yet when a woman puts same thing to them, she is a FEMINIST.
It's disgusting

Look at these idiots more concerned with their egos than a girl that got raped and murdered by 11 guys

They're not saying literally every man you ever come into contact with in life should be feared

Rape is a common enough occurrence committed by all 'configurations' of men (stranger, friend, boyfriend, uncle, colleague, husbands and dare I even say it, even brother and fathers) to have to come to terms with the fact that you can't even count anyone out when it comes to the possibilities.

You sef know it yourselves, that's why when you get stories of innocent females somehow finding themselves alone with a colleague, uncle etc and they get raped you have people asking why she was alone with him. Something as standard as collecting dvd or biscuit from someone's house and you will find all the reasons she was to blame because you are very aware of the risks

Even grandmas aren't spared

Urgh, this made me sick

It's a theology you follow, you should be able to answer it...explain why logically or tell her you don't know if you don't, but don't dismiss her or cover it up with out of context verses

You're spot on guy. That girl is a leech.
Aren't you the same guy that was complaining that 5k (which you were corrected about, it's approx £10, not £2) was too small a money for people abroad to send. What fancy name will you assign yourself then? cheesy

foleskay:
Yes its too small. 5k is equivalent of 2£ or so. If you wanna give, give something tangible and people back home would appreciate. Like 20k and above. Naira is sóo less to pounds, so any small pounds you send would surely hv significant increase in naira. You can do better, that's y they're not appreciating it. 5k na chicking feed in naija
foleskay:
Yeah. If its btw Nigerians now, people would surely appreciate. Even if its 2k, since we live in the same country. But people won't appreciate someone living in the US or UK sending amount of money like 5k to them back home. Some would even think he's struggling back there grin

I can’t believe your relative made $100k annually and couldn’t pay their bills.

Maybe he means 100k naira converted to dollars annually

People abroad are actually safer from this madness.
In Nigeria, it goes beyond your friends and relatives.

One has to be emotionless to stay afloat in Nigeria.

If I ever hear such a comment from anyone I know, they will never again get anything from me, not even on their birthday or for Christmas. And should they ever need help, I will remind them of the comment. angry
The level of entitlement is beyond me

He even said that people abroad should give more because 'what's worth doing at all is worth doing well' lmao I think this is one of the funniest things I've ever seen cheesy

Anything that's worth doing atal is worth doing well. Not a matter of entitlement. If he decides not to send money atal, nobody would force him. But if he must do, let him do something worthy of appreciation
Tell these people who think it's too small to stop asking then wink

Don't you think this is an entitled attitude to have? You weren't there with him/her when they were working for the money
