Humility017: the fact that he once played the round leather game...does not mean that he has an in-depth knowledge of the game... many world best players...never translate being world best coaches.... never assumed others simply know better than you...reason because no man has the monopoly of knowledge... I still maintain they're many ex internationals out there who cannot analyse football like some of us here..... so...his words is just an opinion He not only Played the game. He also coached the game. I repeat Ike is an authority as far as Goalkeeping in Nigeria is concerned. |

TheGoodJoe: He is not the best we can present now in any way. For Rohr to look into it means he knows Akpeyi's selection was a catastrophe. The reality is that we did not do a thorough job in that department and I doubt it will continue. He his our first choice for now. That is it. Please don't get me wrong I do not have anything to gain or lose if Akpeyi mounts goal or not. My own is he is getting an unfair criticism. He may not be the ideal Super Eagles goalie we all crave for but the thing is he is being unfairly blamed for most of our goals. I know your own is because of Alampasu. He should keep working hard. His time will come. |

Ikeme: Shorunmu warns Rohr over Enyeama, backs Akpeyi

Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Ike Shorunmu says Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr should not get stampeded into any hasty decisions on Carl Ikeme ’ s replacement in the national team . Wolves goalkeeper Ikeme is undergoing treatment after being diagnosed with acute leukaemia on Thursday . As the 31 - year- old Nigeria first choice keeper faces a long spell out as he fights the disease , his replacement in the Eagles has become the subject of heated debate in town . And former Eagles’ goalkeeping coach Shorunmu warns Rohr he should be very careful while making his decisions on the issue . The 2000 Africa Cup of Nations silver medallist believes keepers Daniel Akpeyi , Dele Alampasu and Ikechukwu Ezenwa are good enough for starting roles in the Eagles. Shorunmu said former team ’ s first choice Vincent Enyeama should not be pressured to come out of his international retirement , saying the unsettled Lille custodian should be allowed to decide if he wants to return to the national team . “ Rohr shouldn ’t bring in a keeper who has not been part of the team as some people are suggesting , he must be very careful while making his decisions , ” the former Besiktas star , who represented Nigeria at the Korea / Japan 2002 World Cup , told our correspondent on the telephone on Monday . “ Akpeyi , Alampasu and Ezenwa are good keepers, and we should believe in them . “ We can boost their confidence by believing in them and encouraging them to succeed . “ Rohr can pick of them as Ikeme ’ s replacement .” He disagreed with football pundits and commentators who have called for Rohr to omit Akpeyi from his squad for the Russia 2018 World Cup qualifying double - header against Cameroon following his poor performance in the 2 - 0 defeat handed the Eagles by South Africa in their 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Uyo on June 10 . The former Stationery Stores keeper insisted that the Chippa United shot - stopper has the quality to replace Ikeme . Shorunmu said , “ Akpeyi shouldn ’t be blamed for our defeat by South Africa . We lost the game because we didn’ t play our full team . “ He was right to come out of his line in an attempt to stop the second goal . It was the best decision, but unfortunately he couldn ’ t prevent the goal .” The former Switzerland - based keeper added , “ Rohr should not allow people to put him under pressure to invite Enyeama . “ Enyeama is still good but Rohr should be very careful. He should allow Enyeama to decide if he wants to return to the team . “ Enyeama knows why he decided to retire from the national team . He understands his body better than anyone else . “ After the 2002 World Cup , I was under pressure to return to the national team but I said no . I know why I took the decision. “ The coach should allow invite a new keeper to the team to learn . It will be a big mistake to abandon the keepers who have experience for someone who has not played top - level football. ”

clean sheets might be due to good defenders and not great goalkeepers That's why I have opined that a good midfield and defense can make up for an average goalie. Not that I am satisfied with Akpeyi but that is not our major problem. |

BascoVanVeli: Ugbade: AFCON Expansion No Guarantee Super Eagles Will Qualify
Former Nigeria international Nduka Ugbade feels the increase in the number of participating countries from 16 to 24 for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon is not a guarantee that the Super Eagles will qualify, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.
CAF's executive committee on Thursday decided to expand AFCON and move the calendar from January/February to June/July from the 2019 edition billed for Cameroon.
The Super Eagles failed to qualify for the last two AFCONs in 2015 and 2017 and Ugbade believes that the team will face stiff competition from other countries for a 2019 ticket.
Nigeria lost their opening qualifying match 2-0 at home to South Africa and are already playing catch-up as Libya defeated Seychelles in their group's other match.
"Expanding the number of countries will only give opportunity to everybody and not just the big teams," the 1994 AFCON winner with the Super Eagles told Completesportsnigeria.com.
"It will serve as motivation to even the small teams especially those who have never qualified for the Cup of Nations.
"I think the Super Eagles should not wait until decisions like this come up, with our history in the competition, we should always think of being among the first teams to qualify and also win it."
Ugbade went on to back CAF for shifting the AFCON from January and February to June and July.
He added: "Taking the competition to June and July is also good because it will stop the usual complaints by European clubs about releasing players. Also it will give us the opportunity to see the best African players, there wouldn't be any excuse not to attend."

It doesn't also guarantee that South Africa will qualify. 5 more games to play. A lot is at stake. It has only BOOSTED Nigeria's chance of qualifying. |

Mickael2: Akpeyi went to the U20 with Ideye, probably the worst U20 set we have ever assembled until recent times though so what he is doing here doesn't make sense to me at all, he was poor then, he developed poorly and still is poor.
Personally Ajiboye is the best GK we have in the local league so why do you keep on hammering Ezenwa? Firstly, Akpeyi went to same U20 with Mikel and not Ideye. Secondly, Did you say the 2007 U20 was our worst ever? What happened to the U20s of 1995, 1997, 2001, and 2003? even 2009. It means you don't know that the U20 set you have just criticized as the worst produced Brown Ideye, Elderson Echijele, Efe Ambrose late Adefemi Olubayo and Ikechukwu Ezenwa and you say they are the worst? That 2007 U17 class was a fluke. All of them. From Ajiboye to Lukman to Chrisantus to Oseni and the rest of them. Let us be fair in our criticism I beg you my people. |

These guys were hot when they burst into limelight some years back. They were neglected and are now off the radar. Never in my life did I imagine we would be at this point where we dont have a keeper Neglected? So we should have neglected the trio of Enyeama, Ejide and Ayenugba instead? Because we want Vanzenkin and Ajiboye in the national team? You guys seem to forget or probably are not aware that Akpeyi and Ezenwa were also junior internationals. |

EEGA: How can u term a defence consisting of Troost-Ekong , Elderson Echiejile and Shehu Abdullahi "very good".We need a good keeper against cameroon because Confed cup and Afcon have made them stronger.Looking at the SA match, it was obvious there was no leader in our defence. We were poor at the back. So,the need for another good keeper or defender with leadership qualities in the absence of leon and Ikeme.Remember we lost to France in 2014 WC because there was no other DM as good as Onazi. The back four is the only place (esp.the LB and CBS) where we are lacking options. Why not improve the defence with a good second choice keeper? That is why I am more interested in the outfield players. A second choice keeper? Is that what is more important? Who mans the goal against Cameroon? Second choice? |

BascoVanVeli: FG goes tough; to mandate Nigerian brands sponsoring EPL clubs to sponsor NPFL
The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, says the Federal Government will amend the Nigeria Broadcasting Commission, NBC, Code to compel brands to sponsor Nigeria Professional Football League, NPFL.
The minister made the assertion at the close of the “Two-Day Creative Industry Financing Conference,” sponsored by the ministry in conjunction with “Think Tank Media and Advertising” which closed on Tuesday in Lagos.
“We will amend the NBC code to ensure that our Premier League improves.
“We will make sure that in the Code, if you spend one million dollars to support a foreign football club like Manchester United in Nigeria, you will not be allowed to air that programme unless you spend 30 per cent of that money to promote Nigeria’s league.
“Some beverage companies in Nigeria support Manchester United (Man U), Arsenal and others and spend about $6 million a year,’’ he said.
“I then asked the question, how much of their products are being consumed over there?
“I was also told that a particular brand of Nigeria Beer is supporting several premier league teams to the tune of $7 million a year.
“We can imagine if they give us just 30 per cent of that, we will fix our stadia.
“I know they are going to attack me on this but I am not made a minister to sustain the economy of other countries.’’
He said the government could no longer tolerate the situation where people continue to develop the economy of other parts of the world from the sweat of Nigerians and at the expense of Nigerian economy.
The minister also clarified an earlier statement credited to him on the amendment to NBC Code to discourage production of Nigerian movies and music abroad. “At that meeting, I said that I will work to amend the NBC code to ensure that if a product is designated a Nigerian product; it must be produced in Nigeria.
“I didn’t say that henceforth, all music and films will be produced in Nigeria.
“All I said was that if a programme is designated as a Nigerian content programme, we will amend the code to ensure that it is produced in Nigeria,” he said.
He added that if the law says that a programme shall have 60 per cent Nigerian content, the producer could not go ahead to shoot such outside the country for Nigerian viewers.
“Of course, they will come and say that you do not have infrastructure and that is why they went outside to shoot.
“I asked if it is not the same programme you went to shoot outside Nigeria because we have epileptic power that you will bring back to show to us in Nigeria.
“Then, with which power are you showing the programme?
“I promised Nigerians that I am going to create one million jobs in three years and I can’t do that if they start exporting jobs to other countries,” he said. This must be a joke right? |
