goldfish80: I think people should get used to seeing Akpeyi in goal in the foreseeable. Another legendary goalkeeper backs him to start against Cameroon.
How Eagles can subdue Cameroon – Rufai
Peter Rufai insists the Super Eagles will only triumph in their Group B Russia 2018 World Cup qualifying double - header against Cameroon ’ s Indomitable Lions if Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr features players who are ready to fight on the pitch. The Eagles host their fierce rivals in Uyo on August 31 and travel to Yaounde for the reverse fixture on September 4 . Nigeria sit atop the group on six points , followed by African champions Cameroon on two points . Zambia and Algeria who are other teams in the group have one point each. Rohr has been hit by a goalkeeping crisis in the run- up to the double - header after his first choice keeper Carl Ikeme was diagnosed with acute leukaemia last month . And Rufai , who expressed concern over the goalkeeping crisis facing the Eagles , warns Rohr not to gamble on team selection over the two legs . “ Any match between Nigeria and Cameroon is always explosive and I don ’ t expect these World Cup qualifiers to be different , ” the former Portuguese outfit Farense custodian told our correspondent in Lagos on Tuesday . “ The two matches ( in Uyo and Yaounde ) will be very tough for us, we must be ready for them . ” Rufai , who represented Nigeria at the USA ’ 94 and France ’ 98 World Cups , says Rohr should feature good quality and experienced players to enable the Eagles to survive the highly physical Cameroonian players . He said , “ Cameroon believes in experienced players . Many Cameroonian players play for their national team for years , unlike us . “ We must play our experienced players against them . We shouldn ’ t gamble on playing inexperienced players against them .” “ Our players must be ready to fight the opponents throughout the game . ” The former Stationery Stores shot - stopper believed Rohr and his charges had learnt some lessons from their 2 - 0 defeat by South Africa ’s Bafana Bafana in their 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Uyo on June 10 . ” Former Gabon manager Rohr started youngster Chidozie Awaziem in the heart of the Eagles’ defence , dropping South Africa 2013 Africa Cup of Nations winner Kenneth Omeruo to the bench . Bafana exploited the weaknesses in the Nigerian defence to beat them for the first time in a competitive affair. “ They ( Eagles) shouldn ’ t make the mistakes they made against South Africa against Cameroon , ” Rufai said . On the goalkeeping crisis facing the Eagles ahead of the World Cup qualifiers , the former Lokeren keeper said the Nigeria Football Federation Technical Committee would help Rohr as the German searches for Ikeme ’s replacement. “ Nigeria is so big that finding a good keeper should not be a problem , ” he said . However , Rufai said he would support Rohr if he chooses the much vilified Chippa United keeper Daniel Akpeyi as the man between the sticks for the Eagles versus Cameroon . He said , “ Akpeyi shouldn ’ t be blamed for the defeat against South Africa . He did his best in the game .
“ The entire team should be blamed for the defeat . After all the ball went past the attackers, midfielders and defenders before getting to his position . “ The Eagles should come together as a collective unit against Cameroon . ”

Mickael2: you do understand that Obasi played for Schalke when Schalke used to frequent the champions league everyother season.
And Mikel's style of play hasn't changed one bit in a while, that's why most Chelsea fans will want him gone once a new toy is acquired not that he isn't good but most times he is rigid. Now let's compare that with a player that has actually developed.....Griezman. I remember Griezmann at the U20 world cup, he was more concerned with running the show in the midfield and he wasn't bad there, caused Nigeria all sorts of trouble, then he moved to Real Sociedad and became an outright winger, crossing the ball at every opportunity, running at defenders and beating them, two or even three of them at a time unlike the way he used to during the U20, then he went to Madrid and now he hardly crosses the ball, he has turned to a deadly goal poacher. If you watch his U20 clips( Lacazette and Kakuta were the best players for that France set) and his recent clips you will see just how well he has improved his game. Mikel on the hand has even regressed, he used to make 6-7 through passes during his U20 years now that is gone, he had an eye for goal now that has largely diminished(you can still see flashes of it like the goal against Uruguay and Algeria)so no Mikel hasn't developed much Bros the comparison here is Mikel Vs Obasi. Besides there are so many products of that 2005 U20 FIFA WC that are no where near Mikel today. Success is comparative. You cannot compare Obasi's overall contributions to the national team to that of Mikel. Mikel may not have attained the height most had expected. But you cannot tell me he didn't develop much. |

Joebie: Obasi no progress? You are talking as if he has been in the Scandanavia all these years..lol
You want me to to youtube Obasi Bundesliga goals. He's had a injury troubled career. He actually developed as a player. Don't deny that just because he seems to be trying to pick up the pieces for the second season in a row in Sweden. It's hard for your stock to rise with all those injuries. At some point you will have to track back.
Like I said Mikel did not develop SIGNIFICANTLY -- and there is a reason why that word is in uppercase. Think about it for a minute. Let's say it as it is. Did I ever say Obasi did not progress? Go back to that my comment you quoted from and read it slowly. What do you mean by "significantly" you want to compare the competition at youth level to that of senior level? Why have Isaac Success, Iheanacho and Yahaya not been scoring the kind of goals they scored at junior levels? Would you also say they haven't developed 'SIGNIFICANTLY'? |

CLT123: Ideye or Ighalo (preferably Ideye since he's quicker and sets up teammates better than Ighalo) until we can find a permanent striker (Tammy Abraham, Osimhen...). Setting up team mate is more of the job of a supporting striker. A striker that does not strike but would rather set up a team mate na striker? Besides this "setting up team mate" you guys have been posting is not from that Zambia game? The other match he set up a player was against Burkina Faso way back 2013 AFCON. We had to manage Ideye even at his peak not to talk of now. Iheanacho is still our best striker for now. |

michaelella: Good day gabbros an obsidians! I'm really pleased to have come across this forum, and I've carefully read each comment and reply.
I graduated with a B.Sc. in Geology (2:1) from University of Calabar. Right from my 100 level I've been very passionate about geology, to the extent that despite reading about all the challenges and difficulties coupled with the little I've experienced, I do not regret reading geology because I can't think of any course that would have made me love academics this much. I'm also a beneficiary of the NNPC/Chevron scholarship. I'm very goal oriented and self motivated, trying not to give room for discouragements career wise because like I tell myself there's also a frustrated engineer, lawyer, and even a doctor somewhere, but it's DAMN tough not to be discouraged at some point and just go full time into business.
I'm 22 years of age, and I wouldn't say I've seen disappointments like real disappointments relating to this geology as a career but I think I've had a taste. I'm currently serving in Ogun (Ota) state (Batch A 2017, Stream 1). It all started when I got posted to Ogun, I needed a PPA at Sango Ota because I stay at Lagos, brothers and sisters I combed the whole local government including the industrial estate with no hope. The three major replies I get are: 1. We need people who studied engineering (Whenever I heard this, I wish they rather told me just go I don't like your face) 2. You have to know someone at the top to give you are recommendation (this almost killed my zeal to check keep going to copanies, but I'll keep on trying so far transport dey) 3. "Who do you want to see" by the gate-man, and if you don't know anyone, you may as well get lost already
I've finally gotten myself at a PPA where I go just twice a week (I spend the two days reading my sedimentology, stratigraphy and geophysics textbooks cause of idleness), and with the understanding of my boss, if I get an job or an internship I could come just once a week. This gives me 3 to 4 working days to add value to my life. I included this cause I believe I can still get help from someone in this forum.
I'm currently searching for an internship or any form of job related to geology just to gain experience or as a last option a job of any kind so I can saffe up money to write the IELTS exam. I've even gone begged to companies to take me as a volunteer worker, with no pay or stipend of any kind yet still, they bluntly refused saying there's no space for that.
Not withstanding, I'm still looking at the positive side. I'm also thinking critically about my future regarding M.Sc. which I would like to pursue immediately after my NSC God willing. I have 3 choices (Petroleum Geoscience, Applied Geophysics and Environmental Geology/Engineering which I'll expantiate on to enable everyone here to offer advice.
1. Petroleum Geoscience: Yes, it's lucrative, but if you were to look at my area of strength an pick a course for me you'll pick same. I find myself doing very well in courses like Stratigraphy, Sedimentology, Petroleum Geology, Applied Geophysics, Economic geology etc (if I don't get an A, it's a B). I'm naturally interested in this course, maybe the fact that it's lucrative makes it easier for me to understand. Most times I try to think of a case where there would be shortage of petroleum geoscientist since many people are talked out of streamlining their careers to study pet geo. Remember that, despite the oil troubles companies are still searching for reserves using advanced technologies.
2. Applied Geophysics: This is like the safest option, because not only can you work in the oil industry, but also in other aspects like solid mineral exploration etc. You can even run your own company and search for contracts. BUT I love to be realistic, I have a B.Sc in geology, not geophysics, maths, engineering or physics. Schooling in Nigeria is bad enough, I don't trust my maths and physics so well, I last offerred Advanced Maths in 200L which I passed with strive. I have doubts that I'll be able to cope well if I go outside the country to study Geophysics. Even if I somehow struggle to pull through, this world is too competitive to travel out to study only to be average in what you do, you must excel in your chosen field). I've read forums which say it's easier for a engineer or mathematician to study for an M.Sc. in Geophysics than a geologist. Otherwise, I'll Take this option over Petroleum Geoscience.
3. Environmental Geology/Engineering: Everyone talks about how important environmental geology is and is becoming. Yes, but looking at it critically, are the positions for an environmental geologist not also limited? How many will an oil company employ? How many will other companies and federal ministries employ? Also, looking at the future, I see a situation where environmentalist would be far higher than the available jobs, like very high, can't predict how soon though.
Everyone should please feel free to let me know if I'm wrong, it may help another person too.
Also, @GeoOla25 please I'll like to know how you went about applying to university of Liverpool. I know some routines, but there are some little details I'll love to ask you privately. Rather than spending time reading your stratigraphy, sedimentology and Geophysics text books why not read GMAT, GRE and SHL aptitude test questions, Your physics and mathematics texts books too should be at your bed side. Know this now and thank me later. |

What ever Geosciences course you study (excluding hard rocks) is needed in the oil industry. What you should focus more now is on how to get the funding. CLT123: No we don't. See how we struggled vs. SA.... Mikel is good, but Iheanacho is better than him in that role. Mikel should be played a little deeper as a CM, and be Nigeria's midfield maestro.

Joebie: One thing Iheanacho-Success partnership taught me. Back then, Success seemed more lethal sometimes, other times, Iheanacho did more of the scoring. Success was also a better provider at times. Other times Iheanacho did more in assists. Restricting Iheanacho to the CF role won't bring the best out of him and the team. He needs a similar partner in crime.
Modified That's the kind of sentiments many of us have here. Somebody said let's wait for Osimhen. Another person says let's wait for Aaron Samuel. I can interpret that to mean they are both not ready. How about we just say who is best partnering him right now?
The season has just started. How they begin will be a good yardstick. That's why I said in the absence of no better lethal striker iheanacho it is. We still have other players that can play behind the main striker. But Iheanacho stands out amongst the strikers. We need to maximise our strength in the various positions. |

Joebie: EPL is highly commercial and competitive. You have to be very exceptional to be in the first team of those top clubs you mentioned. These are clubs who feel being in the top 4 is their birth right. Arsenal is an exception though.
Tammy to Swansea is not a bad move. Arsenal is an exception as how? |

Until we find a striker who is more lethal than Iheanacho he remains my top pick for the CF position.
We just need to set up the team to maximize Iheanacho's ability.
Osimhen, and Sadiq are not ready yet. And Kayode is not lethal enough.
For now I don't buy the 4-4-2 formation.
My eye will also be on Aaron Samuel to see if he can find back his 2014 form. |

German club Hannover 96 have announced that Nigeria international Noah Joel Sarenren Bazee will undergo an operation on his injured thigh.
The promising striker has suffered a tendon rupture in the rear left thigh according to Hannover's official website.
A club statement read: "Bitter Diagnosis for Noah Joel Sarenren Bazee: The 20-year-old, who had to be replaced yesterday after an offensive in the test match against the 1. FC Germania Egestorf / Langreder, has suffered a tendon rupture in the rear left thigh.
"Injury is treated conservatively This was the result of today's investigations with our team doctors Dr. Axel Partenheimer and Dr. Felix Hessel. The duo could exclude a muscle injury. Sarenren Bazee will go around for an operation. The injury is to be treated conservatively. We wish Noah fast recovery and good recovery."
As a result, Bazee could miss Nigeria's 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Cameroon which will take place on 31 August and 4 September 2017.

A lot depends on Osimhen hitting it fast.

I think we will later switch to a 4-4-2 formation. If Osimhen develops as I think, then that will be the best option for us. However if we must play a 4-2-3-1 formation and Osimhen develops fast, Nacho can play in the middle 3 but with freedom to attack at will with Osimhen up top. So Osimhen's development should be the only factor that will determine if we switch to 4-4-2 or not? |

Joebie: Exactly what SE needs. A potent striker to partner him. Meaning we play 4-4-2. But Rohr typically plays 4-2-3-1. That lone striker system. In 4-4-2 the team typically doesn't have a number 10. This can be problematic if the Midfielders are not creative and imposing on the game enough. it will leave the two strikers stranded. This may cause the coach to instruct one of the two strikers to fall deep which means switching back to 4-5-1 thereby having a number 10. But if we have very mobile, creative and imposing CM, we may not necessarily need a number 10 and so 4-4-2 may fly. So the formation you adopt largely depends on the strength and potentials of your team. The 94 Eagles never had a 'number 10'. The creativity Oliseh and Okocha brought were enough to keep our strikers busy. Like Oliseh's long balls always finding Yekini. Okocha, apart from his magic skills, had excellent vision and passing ability. So Yekini and Amokachi had plenty of the balls. But do we have a DM and CM in the modes of Oliseh and Okocha presently in the team? |
