TheGoodJoe:
Yes, I started the ball playing defenders talk here. I watched Ekong at the Olympics and that was what impressed me. The way he helped the team build up attacks and the way he helped the team keep possession.
If we hang on just the stats, goldfish80 dropped, then we will say Ekong's ball playing ability is a myth. That is not true.
Omeruo is a ball playing defender but his passing stats is lower than Balogun. So we should say Omeruo's ball playing ability is a myth?
From what I see, it relies more in the set up of the team. The post I posted earlier showed a ball playing drill Rohr carried out. It shows he wants control and play from his defenders. That is enough to show I was right pointing out his preference of ball playing defenders.
I do not think anyone should not like someone trying to understand how a coach plays. I am trying to understand Rohr, so I can know what to expect from him.
My assessments might be wrong but how can I know if I do not try to understand him.
As I said, we will understand him with more games. I have said what I have noticed so far.
If you notice different, you can share. Just as you said Iheanacho played a deeper role. I did not see me questioning you suggesting that. You only mentioned "we will know with subsequent matches" after I stated "it was too early to make such conclusions". Remember I asked you if you have seen any other of Rohr's team's play of which you said no. This Balogun and "Ball playing" thing also came from that match. Nothing wrong in you trying to understand a coach or a player. But how you present how well you know the coach's pattern matters. But as you have agreed let us keep watching and see. |

Did I say training conditions are the same? It is a good way to screen and select players. Just like the drill I highlighted there. If a player can not do it in training, he can not do it in match conditions.
Just like our U17 screening starts with drills before match settings. Just like a team must train before the coach releases his starting line-up.
Training drills are important. I prefer a coach who has drills in his locker to select his squad. I am sure you know the root of this our particular argument. |

I did not say Coach Rohr is a 4-3-3 coach. I actually said 4-4-2 attacking formation, similar to Arsene Wenger's invincible team. Remember, it came up during what role Iheanacho played. I said he played as a support striker and you said he played as a ten.
We say we will understand him more with more games from him. I wonder how you find that a problem. Nops! I dnt find that as any problem. Let us not just be carried away by that Tanzania game. |

goldfish80: Anyone can do anything in training. On match day it's a different ball game. I've seen plays who play like demons in training but are sh!t on match days. Training is training, match is match. His 75% pass completion rate for a well coached, ball playing, high pressing side like Mainz isn't enough for me to make back flips. Sorry. Thanks bro. TheGoodJoe: Squawka Football @Squawka 8 months Aleksandar Kolarov's first half by numbers:
56% pass accuracy 0 crosses completed 0 interceptions 0 aerial duels
This was one of Kolarov's stats 8 months ago. I guess with that, you will say Kolarov Is not a great ball playing defender. Meanwhile he is a brilliant one.
You can not pull out a stat and say he is not a great ball playing defender.
When we talk of ball playing, it is not just about passes but comfort with the ball. The ability to express with the ball and making incisive runs to help build up play.
In the Tanzania match, Leon Balogun was exceptional with the ball. I have not seen a defensive pair that good on the ball since I started watching Nigeria. (Sir Icon4s do not attack me, I did not watch the late eighties flying eagles)
You can not say Leon Balogun's ball playing ability is myth. He plays comfortably as a right back. You, TheGoodJoe, are the originator of this "Ball playing defender" thing. This is just one of those hasty conclusions you made after that Tanzania game. The others are: " Rohr is a 4-3-3 coach", "Rohr is like Pep Guordiala", "Rohr plays a high defense line". Let us play Zambia and Algeria before we conclude on all those. Goldfish80 has brought up a very enlightening stats and you went to dig up the stats of one of your man city "idols". Goldfish80's stats is average passing accuracy while yours is for a particular match. You did not even state the opponent as you know nature of opposition affects players performance. Goldfish has said it all. We should not have any issues with Omeruo in that defense. Talking about Flying Eagles of the late 80's o boy you missed o. If you did not watch our youth teams of 1985 to 1989: Nduka Ugbade, Philip Osondu, Victor Igbinoba, Mutiu Adepoju, Chris Ohenhen, Chris Nwosu, Dimeji Lawal, Victor Ikpeba, Jonathan Akpoborie, Benedict Akuegbu, John Zaki, Godwin Okpara, Peter Ogaba, Samuel Elijah, Lemmy I say. How do you see this line up. I will have Iheanacho playing as a false 9.Iwobi attcking MD. Ndidi will sit deep and soak up the pressure while Okechukwu enforces the Midfield.

Isaac...............................Iheanacho..........................Moses This formation is 4-3-3 that can switch to 4-2-4. Fact dat u set up Iheanacho as a false 9 makes Iwobi the box to box midfielder. Playing Ndidi and Azubuike means you playing 2 blocking 4s. Quite an interesting formation. I have also seen Iwobi as a good box to box midfielder. |

Omeruo is not as good as Leon Balogun in ball playing but he can adapt. Remember he used to play as a right back. I hope Rohr invites Awaziem to participate in camp.
Sad we will really miss the refreshing ball playing displays of Balogun. Leon Balogun being out is a problem. But for this game in Ndola it is not much of a problem. 1. The game would be played at 2:30pm Zambian time, under the scorching Sun and I feel Omeruo would adapt more easily than Balogun. 2. This is an away game against Zambia. His ball sweeping or stopper abilities would be more desire able over his ball passing abilities. You should expect Nigeria's defense to come under heavy bombardment especially if we take the lead and need to see it off. Besides who says Omeruo is not a good baller passer? Is it the same Omeruo that featured at the 2013 AFCON and 2014 World Cup or another one? 3. Kenneth Omeruo is a very experienced campaigner on the African soil.He has played on different kind of African pitches plus African crowd hostilies.I don't see us having issues with him. My worries lie more with Troost-Ekong. |

Awaziem is another for the future, the dicey nature of the clash against Zambia made his omission a no brainer. Kenneth Omeruo took his place. You can’t place them on same level when you are talking experience
Is Rohr the white version of Icon4s? See my brother, remember I said something yesterday. This is the first time in so many years that our best players are assembled. Not even in major tourneys like AFCON and WC have we had this. The problem I had with Siasia, Keshi, Oliseh and back to Siasia again was issue of "my boys". You will go and field one 19yrs old defender and drop a seasoned experienced defender all because you want to promote your boy. At the detriment of Nigeria's qualification. Immediately I saw Rohr's line up against Tanzania i knew the Glory days are back. Too frequent changes in the team's setup has put bus where we are today. Now to the issue of experience. In fact when I read that line that says you need the experience of the big players for a game of this magnitude I laughed and remembered all our debate on relevance of experience in football. Our problem in the past ten years or more has been: We raise a crop of young players then when they have gained experience and time for us to reap from it we discard them and tag them too old. And then begin all over again. The choice of Omeruo ahead of Awaziem of course is the right step na.. You can't compare. At a point some peeps here said Awaziem was our best central defender, just because he plays for FC Porto. Even without a national team debute? I have said it that the likes of Awaziem, Awoniyi,Sadiq,Ezeh, Mathew, Yahaya should have been part of the Amuneke's Flying Eagles team. That is where we would have needed them more to do us proud. Sir TheGoodJoe, experience is priceless in football. |

I feel the Nwakali brothers will overtake Ndidi for the deeper roles later.
Guardiola still has interest in Chidi. If he works with Guardiola, then we will have a gem. The few weeks at the Campus with Guardiola fired him up. The mid field is one place that would be very competitive in their new future. Papa Mikel's reign is coming to a close. We have a large pool of both defensive and cenral midfielders that are on the rise. I dnt wish for any particular player or players to over-take any player. tbaba1234: How Do You Invite Players? Turkish Journalist Questions Invitation Of Musa Mohammed
Highly respected Turkish journalist Adnan Adem has questioned the rationale behind the invitation of Musa Mohammed to the Super Eagles, ahead of Nigeria’s first World Cup 2018 qualifiers against Zambia in Ndola.
19 year old Musa was once again included in the list of players called up by the coach of Nigeria Gernot Rohr for the game on the 9th of October, maintaining his spot in the team after his first competitive debut against Tanzania.
Musa Mohammed plays in Turkey for Istanbul Basaksehir, same country where Adnan is highly respected for his coverage of the league and it’s players.
The former Nigeria U-17 and 20 captain is yet to make a single league appearance since joining Turkish side Istanbul Basaksehir last summer, but keeps getting invited to the Nigeria senior national team.
Adnan said Musa Mohammed is in the league of players who were highly rated when they first arrived but after few months are viewed as flops.
” How do players get invited to the senior national team of Nigeria?. He is yet to play a single minute of league football in over a year. As a matter of fact, he is yet to make the match day squad for any of their games in all competition” Adnan said.
” He is presently third choice right full back if not fourth, someone they even tried to terminate his contract this summer. He has played more games for Nigeria than he has played for his club in over a year. How does he get invited?.”
http://owngoalnigeria.com/2016/09/23/how-do-you-invite-players-turkish-journalist-questions-invitation-of-musa-mohammed/ This is the only player I have questioned his inclusion. The simple answer is: He is the golden boy of Nigerian Youth football. The coaches and fans love him and love what he can bring to the team. |

He can not say that about you. It was a slip of the keyboard.
You once said Ighalo was not experienced enough for what the Super Eagles need upfront and I argued with you. With development going on in Ighalo's play, I can see your point.
So if you think an EPL club's regular starter is not experienced enough and needs more time to become Super Eagles quality, how can you call for an Academy player. I didn't just know Ighalo today. People thought because he scored 14 goals for Watford in one season then he can quickly solve our scoring problem. It takes time for players to settle down in the national Team. Yekini joined the Super Eagles in 1984 at a very young age but not until 1988 before he came a major goals threat. Ighalo to me is not a class A+ or A- striker. I would classify him as a B-. He is just above average. His hard work and share determination has brought him this far. Age is not also on his side. This is why we should start grooming that Iheanacho-Success- Iwobi partnership. They can turn out to be our own "MSN". These are among the best young players in the world today that if well groomed and managed they can take the world by storm. They just need to be playing more regularly together. They are the "gang" that can solve our goals scoring problem not just Odion Ighalo. |

TheGoodJoe:
I believe you feel this squad needs time before we can celebrate them as Super Eagles quality. You see this as a building process of the Super Eagles.
I think this set can make us proud. This Team is definitely "Not there Yet". However, I believe this team if well managed will go very far. One of the major reasons I am really happy about the players called for the Tanzania and this Zambia game is: for a long Time, I have not seen it where we get to invite our very best. Even for major tourneys as AFCON and the World Cup. It simply means the coaches know what they want to achieve and who and who to achieve it. See, I am not against giving new players opportunity to prove their worth but what I am against is inviting a player of less quality all in the name of discovering new talent. Look at the case of playing Paul Onobi and benching Mikel. What do you call that? Anybody that will bench Mikel must have been proven to be better than him. Anybody who will bench Moses must have proven he is better than him. Most other coaches come and they come in with their set of players, ignoring the already established talents in the team and this has been drawing us back for years. How can we have regulars in Arsenal, Mancity, Chelsea, Leicester, Watford and other top European teams and we will still be experimenting with some unknown players from some unknown leagues? I say unleash our best for every game jare. That will quickly aid in Team building. Consistency is the key. Sincerely, I believe so much in this team. But that game in Ndola and the game against Algeria in Uyo are key to the future of this crop. We get 6points from both games and our Super Eagles are back . We get 4pts and we say well, they tried . We get 3points, then we say we still have a long way to go . We get 1 or 0 points then... |

bigblangston: An offensive setup and nicely done but we have to realise that we are playing in faraway Zambia where everything including the atmospheric condition may be setup in a way to thwart our ambition of progressing to the WC tourney. The Zambians are known to play beautiful football in the presence of their fans and they will have to appease their fans for their failure to qualify for AFCON, So they will go gun blazing at us but we can turn that to our advantage by trying to be conserved with our approach by using 4-5-1 formation. This formation help us to soak the pressure from the Zambian team which in turn frustrate the zambian team and add a lot of pressure on them then errors set in. Then we can turn that to our advantage but our striker should be known for burying half chance when it presents itself which I know kelechi is capable of doing perfectly. Success should stick to the flanks if the 4-3-3 is eventually used. Yeah right bro. Also Mikel's CMF presence is very important as we may have Iwobi as the Central AM. In case Iwobi does not find his footing in the game (typical of young players on this kind of stage) Mikel should be able to cover for him. Our wingers really need to track back to support the wing backs. This is why we may not start Success as one of the wingers. |

TheGoodJoe: I propose we go with a 4-3-3 formation. An attacking line up with three forwards.
----------------------------------Carl Ikeme(GK)---------------------------------------- ---------------------Ekong(CB)----------------Balogun(CB)------------------ M. Mohammed(RB)----------------------------------------------------Echiejile(LB) ----------------------------------------Onazi(DMF)---------------------------------------------- -------------------Iwobi(CMF/AMF)-------------Mikel(CMF/AMF)----------------- ---------------V. Moses(SS)-------------------------------------------Success(SS) -------------------------------------------Iheanacho(CF)----------------------------------
Left back is a challenge for me because I do not trust Echiejile's crosses and tracking back. I put his name there because of his experience and I have not watched much of Madu's defending.
A lot of us hurled criticism at V. Moses because of his stingy play. However, he can become an asset with more license to attack. Instead of sticking to the flanks to cross and pass, a combination of three skillful strikers will bring out the best in Moses. We will see them exchange brilliantly close to goal and cause Zambia problems.
Mikel and Iwobi have the duty of disciplined play and key passes to unlock the opponents defence.
Onazi must stick to his disciplined play as he did against Tanzania. The setup is offensive and a stable defensive midfielder is crucial to prevent counter attacks.
Rohr should reduce the forward play of Echiejile to reduce the work he does to track back. Onazi should fill gaps.
cc: Icon4s, tbaba1234, TheSuperNerd, lakesidepapa, safarigirl, Joseph1013, confun, goldfish80, Mickael2, forgiveness, chrisooblog, lexyman, amagunnerfan, zicky, HZwriters, bigblangston etc. Firstly what I am happy about is the fact that Rohr is hitting the ground running. He trusts the pool of players we have already and inviting 2-3 new players. That is what I have been talking about. This will ensure balance and stability. Firstly an outright 4-3-3 formation is not what you go with when you face African opposition away. Even if it is Chad or Burundi you want to play. U would need a consolidated midfield. The only player I am not comfortable with on your list is Musa Mohammed. And I am sure u no my reasons. I would rather we start Shehu Abdulahi who is a more tested player Secondly you need a central AM an may need to re-arrange your midfield and attack to look like this: ...............Onazi ..............................Mikel Moses...........Iwobi........Success ..................Iheanacho This is a 4-2-3-1 that can easily be converted to a 4-3-3 when on the attack. However, I feel Rohr may want to start Ahmed Musa ahead of Success. With Musa and Moses playing from the wings and Iwobi as the number 10 it becomes a typical 4-5-1 formation with more midfield presence. We need a very compact midfield in Ndola. |
