Onyekuru Negotiates Borrussia Monchengladbach Loan Move From Everton
May 17, 2018 8:58 am

Nigeria forward, Henry Onyekuru, is in line to link up with German club, Borussia Monchengladbach on loan for the 2018/2019 season, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.
Onyekuru joined English Premier League club, Everton from Belgian side Eupen last summer but spent this season on loan at Anderlecht.

Everton and Anderlecht had an agreement for the player to stay on for another season, but Onyekuru according to a report in Belgian online news outlet, m.hnl.be , is opposed to the idea and instead prefer a move to Germany.

The striker believes that he does not get enough trust from Anderlecht coach Hein Vanhaezebrouck, who has repeated several times over the past weeks that he is not fit to play following his long term injury an assertion the player disagree with.
Turkish giants, Besiktas are also said to be interested in securing Onyekuru’s services, but his preferred destination is the Bundesliga.

Onyekuru is expected today in Mönchengladbach, where a meeting with sports manager Max Eberl is planned.
Mönchengladbach are prepared to meet the terms of the loan conditions with Everton and also hopes to be able to reach an agreement with Onyekuru.

The 20-year-old last featured for Anderlecht in a league game against his former club Eupen last December following a knee injury he picked up in the encounter.
Prior to the injury, he scored nine goals for Anderlecht in 19 appearances in the Jupiler Pro League.

Joel Obi Gets World Cup Boost, Returns From Injury For Torino

Nigeria midfielder Joel Obi boosted his chances of making the country’s squad to the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia after making a return from injury to the bench in Torino’s 2-1 win against SPAL in a Serie A fixture on Sunday, reports Completesportsnigeria. com.

Obi has missed Torino’s last three league games due to injury, which put his participation at the World Cup in doubt.

The former Inter Milan player last featured for Torino in their 1-1 draw against AC Milan on April 18 as a 57th minute for Tomas Rincon.

Obi has featured in 22 league games for Torino this season and has scored five goals.

Torino rallied back from a goal down to win the game.

Alberto Grassi put SPAL ahead in the 22nd minute but Torino scored two goals through Andrea Belotti and Lorenzo Silvestri.

Efe Ambrose, Josh Onomah, Even Simi Nwankwo (he talked about Simy being given a chance within the last month).
To his credit when some people said Eze is better than Omeruo, he called them out immediately and stated that there is no basis for comparism. He is also a fan of Joel Obi. For all it is worth while I totally support the team, the coach and the team list truth be told a player like Ajagun was never given a chance, I agree everyone can't make the team. Also to Kayode's matter, I feel his case is like that of a person that they want to burn and he also went to rob his body with palm-oil. It is on record that he destroyed the sports admin career of Chief Taiwo Ogunjobi one of the Godfathers of football admin in Nigeria, maybe the beef is still there with NFF but his move to Man City and failed loan at Girona nailed the coffin for him plus getting suspended for fighting attacking a referee is a bad disciplinary issue. If he's truly the age he claims, I believe with time he would break into the team.

Siasia: Ambrose, Ajayi, Ejide Should’ve Been In World Cup Squad; Eagles Can’t Win Trophy

May 15, 2018 10:42 pm

By Richard Jideaka, Abuja:
Former Super Eagles coach Samson Siasia has expressed surprise at the exclusion of the duo of Ambrose Efe of Hibernian and Al Ahly’s Junior Ajayi as well as goalkeeper Austin Ejide from the 30-man provisional list for the Russia 2018 World Cup, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

Siasia told the media in Abuja on Tuesday that the coach Gernot Rohr has made his selection, and his choice of players for the World Cup should be respected because he is responsible for whatever result the team get in Russia.

“I think Efe’s experience and form for his Scottish side Hibernian is good enough to get him into the list, and he would be of immense help to the Super Eagles defence at the World Cup while Junior Ajayi would have added fire power to the Eagles attack, and should have been given the chance to prove himself,” Siasia, who starred for Nigeria at the World Cup in 1994, said.

“All the same, the coach knows what he is doing and has picked his team, we just have to support him for Nigeria to do well in Russia. We cannot win the World Cup but if we emerge from the group stage, our team can spring some surprises.”

Asked if the exclusion of Vincent Enyeama would be felt in the Eagles, Siasia’s answer was an emphatic no, stressing that the former captain of the Super Eagles was not keen to be part of the team and he has not been playing for his club Lille.

He said Ezenwa was number one during the qualifiers and should retain that role for World Cup. Siasia however wished that the coach had extended invitation to Austin Ejide for his experience and physicality.

'No sentiment, no godfatherism' - Taju Disu warns Rohr over Nigeria's final selection for World Cup
Tolu Olasoji

Deputy Editor Nigeria

The Super Eagles provisional 30-man list was released on Monday and the ex-international has called for transparency in choosing the best...
Sentiments and godfatherism in choosing Nigeria's final 23 players for the 2018 World Cup 'is going to kill the team', warns ex-international Taju Disu.

On Monday, captain John Obi Mikel was joined by 29 others in the provisional list ahead of the Super Eagles' campaign in Russia.

And while the former defender feels the list is decent enough, he urges coach Gernot Rohr that all players be given fair hearing in the buildups, and the final decision should be void of influence from higher authorities or sensationalism.

"So far, so good I think the list is okay," Disu told Goal.

"But what I would say is they should not base everything on sentiment, they should go out there with the best legs. No sentiment, no godfatherism because it is going to kill the team.

"It is always like that. Nobody should go into the world cup because he has a godfather. But I pray it doesn't happen because I know it is been happening."

Disu feels veteran striker Obafemi Martins was 'unfortunate' not to have made the list after his exploits with Shanghai Shenhua was halted by a serious injury, thus, ending hopes of a recall.

And with Nigeria set to play DR Congo, England and the Czech Republic to prepare for the World Cup, the former Abiola Babes defender believes some players, with outside chances, might use that opportunity to gatecrash the setup.

"At the end of the day, you never know what would happen because when they go out for trials, players you don't even think that would impress would eventually go there and perform well and make the team. So, I think it is still open to everybody," he said.

Five wing-backs have been selected in the preliminary list with the experienced Elderson Echiejile part of them.

The left-back's stock has dropped massively and prior to his recent call-up, he has yet to feature for the national team since the crucial win over Zambia in Uyo.

Also, he has only 12 appearances [nine league games] across all competitions in loan spells at Sivasspor and Cercle Brugge this season.

"Well, the coaches picked him again, so the only thing I will say is at the end of the day I love coaches who pick players on merit and not sentiment," Disu continued.

"If you pick players along because of sentiment or because they have godfathers, it is going to hurt the team at the end because the World Cup is a global tournament; a tournament you have to go with only your best.

"You must go there with players ready to play at any time because anything can happen, injuries can still happen. You don't pick players just to make up the numbers or based on sentiments because the opportunity might come there for him to play - anybody might get injured.

"That's the advise I'd offer Rohr, because I know there'd be some players, imposed on him by some so-called godfathers. It's bound to happen. So, the coach should know he has [the 23 men] to prepare, not picking some just to make up the numbers. Go there with the best legs and make sure they represent Nigeria well."

Nigeria face Croatia, Iceland and Argentina in the Group D.

Oh please, give me a break! If he's not a tribalist what is he? Can you name a single non-Yoruba player that either Forgiveness or his alter-ego Komekn has ever promoted on this forum? Please name one! The man is a tribal chieftain and I will tell him that to his face if I meet him. I don't give a rat a$$. He and his ilks are the problem with Nigeria today!

I totally gave up on this dude when he kept promoting Dele Alampasu. Someone who has never played even a single game for his clubside. Someone who's been given an invite time and time again but failed to impress. Now, on what basis would any sane human being keep hyping him here, as if he's Nigeria's best goalkeeper since Emmanuel Okalahuh

Now, the flavor of the month is seems to be Olarenwaju Kayode. I practically watched ALL the games Kayode played for Girona this season and I can tell you without any fear of contradictions that Kayode is an average player! There is NOTHING special about him and he's way below several other players in the pecking order. It just staggers my imagination why an intelligent guy like SuperNerd would decide to engage Forgiveness. Are you that bored or somethinghuh

The Argument seems uncalled for, it ain't necessary and simply a Distraction to the Thread at the moment. We ought to be discussing our Chances based on the invited Players. Those who are likely to be dropped and the Reasons for it?!

Enough of this Argument pls. You gonna have to move on, and support the Team as a true Nigerian/ a loyal Fan. We can't always get what we want/desire, we can't be satisfied either.

Kindly end the Discourse before it gets out of control.

France calls for Israeli restraint

France’s Foreign Minister, Jean-Yves Le Drian, has called on the Israeli authorities to "act with caution and restraint in the use of force, which must be strictly proportional".
"It is urgent to reinstate the conditions necessary for the pursuit of a peaceful solution in a regional context already marked by high tensions," he added. "France is calling on all actors to act responsibly to prevent a new flare-up."

He also reiterated France's opposition to the US embassy move, saying it "violated international law and, in particular, UN Security Council resolutions".
Mr Le Drian met his UK counterpart, Boris Johnson, in London on Monday.

BREAKING Death toll rises to 43 - health officials

Monday's death toll in Gaza has risen to 43, Palestinian health officials say, with more than 2,238 people reported injured.

It is the deadliest day since the start six weeks ago of a series of protests dubbed the "Great March of Return" along the Israel-Gaza border fence.

There have been at least 90 fatalities in this latest spell of demonstrations, according to the Palestinian health ministry.

PLO calls for general strike to mourn dead

The Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) has reportedly called for a general strike "to mourn the martyrdom" of protesters on the Israel-Gaza border.

The official Palestinian news agency, Wafa, cited PLO Executive Committee member Wasel Abu Yousef as announcing a "complete strike" across the Palestinian territories.

US has 'insulted the world', says Abbas spokesman

A spokesman for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has warned that the opening of the US embassy in Jerusalem will further destabilise the Middle East.

Top US diplomat praises embassy move

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is yet to say anything about the violent clashes at the Gaza border.
He has released a statement praising President Trump's decision to relocate the US embassy, saying he looked forward to returning to Jerusalem soon.

President Trump tweeted twice on Monday to celebrate the embassy's opening, but also chose not to address the deadly violence in Gaza.

His son-in-law and aide Jared Kushner briefly noted the protests in his speech at the embassy opening event, saying the protesters were "part of the problem and not the solution".

Here's Mike Pompeo's statement in full:

Protesters 'hurling firebombs and explosive devices' - IDF

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has said 40,000 Palestinians are taking part in "violent riots" in 13 locations along the Israel-Gaza border, and that it is determined to fulfil its mission to protect Israeli territory and civilians.

"The rioters are hurling firebombs and explosive devices at the security fence and at IDF troops and are burning tires, throwing rocks and launching flaming objects with the intention of igniting fires in Israeli territory and harming IDF troops," a statement said.

"IDF troops are responding with riot dispersal means and fire, and are operating according to standard operating procedures."

Rights groups - including Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch (HRW) and others - have condemned the IDF's actions.

“The policy of Israeli authorities to fire irrespective of whether there is an immediate threat to life on Palestinian demonstrators in Gaza, caged in for a decade and under occupation for a half century, has resulted in a bloodbath that anyone could have foreseen,” said Sarah Leah Whitson, the HRW's Middle East director.

15:31

Israel says jet struck Hamas facility

An Israeli fighter jet has struck a military training facility belonging to the Palestinian militant group Hamas in the northern Gaza Strip, according to a statement from the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).

"The strike was conducted in response to the violent acts of the last few hours being carried out by Hamas along the security fence," the statement says.

Earlier, an aircraft and a tank targeted two Hamas military positions in response to an incident in which Israeli forces were fired upon, the statement adds.
"The IDF operates with determination in order to prevent massive terror activities constantly being led by the Hamas terror organisation in. Each act of terror will be met with a harsh response."

Hamas and other groups organising the protests on the Israel-Gaza border say they are peacefully calling for the right of Palestinian refugees to return to land they fled from or were forced to leave in 1948, when Israel was created.

The Israeli government has long ruled out any right of return and says terrorists are using the cover of the protests to try to cross illegally into its territory.

15:22

Egypt joins condemnations of force

Egypt's foreign ministry has released a statement condemning the Israeli military's use of force at the border.

Egypt rejects the use of force against peaceful marches demanding legitimate and just rights, and warns of the negative consequences of this dangerous escalation in the occupied Palestinian territories."

15:13

US 'breaking international law'

As triumphant speeches continue at the new US embassy, the Palestinian foreign ministry has accused the US administration of “acting on its arrogance of power and disdain for Palestinian rights” and stressed that the fate of Jerusalem “will only be determined in line with international law”.

"As the Palestinian people commemorate seventy years since the onset of their Nakba (catastrophe) of dispossession, denial, and injustice, the US administration added insult to injury in Jerusalem by defying international law and rejecting UN Security Council resolutions relevant to Palestinian rights, especially in Jerusalem," a statement carried by the official Wafa news agency says.

The ministry adds: "The Palestinian leadership will continue to pursue all available legal and diplomatic avenues to defend our people's rights from Israel's entrenched regime of colonisation and aggression as well as states that defend and sponsor this regime of oppression. This is also an international responsibility."

Israel regards Jerusalem as its "eternal and undivided" capital, while the Palestinians claim East Jerusalem - occupied by Israel in the 1967 Middle East war - as the capital of a future state.

Jared Kushner minutes ago finished speaking at the opening ceremony. He called Jerusalem "the eternal heart of the Jewish people".

"By moving our embassy to Jerusalem we have showed the world once again that the United States can be trusted."

That remark caused some consternation from commentators, who pointed out that President Trump has just spectacularly reneged on the nuclear deal signed with Iran under the Obama administration.

In the first reference from a Trump official during the ceremony to the violence taking place at the border, Kushner said: "Those provoking violence are part of the problem and not part of the solution."

He said the controversial decision to move the embassy "did not reflect a departure from our strong commitment to lasting peace".

"The United States is prepared to support a peace agreement in every way that we can. We believe that it is possible for both sides to gain more than they give so that all people can live in peace safe from danger, free from fear and able to pursue their dreams," he said.

Lebanese PM: Embassy move is 'provocative'

Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri said in a series of tweets on Monday that the US embassy relocation was a "provocative" move that would "further exacerbate" tension in the region.

"We affirm our complete solidarity with the Palestinian brothers in their legitimate struggle," he said.

Human rights groups condemn Israel's use of force

Human rights groups have condemned the Israeli military's use of force against protesters at the Gaza border.

Amnesty International called it an "abhorrent violation of international law".

Israeli group B’Tselem said the Israeli authorities had shown an "appalling indifference towards human life" and called for an "immediate halt to the killing of Palestinian demonstrators".

The demonstrations held in Gaza today came as no surprise. Israel had plenty of time to come up with alternate approaches for dealing with the protests, apart from firing live ammunition. The fact that live gunfire is once again the sole measure that the Israeli military is using in the field evinces appalling indifference towards human life on the part of senior Israeli government and military officials.

B’Tselem calls for an immediate halt to the killing of Palestinian demonstrators. If the relevant officials do not issue an order to stop the lethal fire, the soldiers in the field must refuse to comply with these manifestly unlawful open-fire orders.

UN chief concerned over ‘high number of people killed’ in Gaza

UN Secretary General António Guterres expresses concern about the reported death toll at the protests in Gaza, the Associated Press reports.

"I'm particularly worried about the news coming from Gaza with the high number of people killed," he tells reporters in Vienna.

Ivanka Trump unveils plaque at embassy

US Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin and Mr Trump's daughter, Ivanka, unveiled a plaque on the wall of the building that will serve as the temporary home of the US embassy.

"On behalf of the 45th president of the Unites States of America, we welcome you officially and for the first time to the embassy of the United States here in Jerusalem, the capital of Israel," Ms Trump said.

14:37

Trump: 'Congratulations. It's been a long time coming.'

President Trump did not travel to Jerusalem for the opening ceremony, but a video message from him was just played on a big screen there.

He said: "Exactly 70 years ago today the United States under Harry Truman became the first nation to recognise the state of Israel. Today we open the US embassy in Jerusalem. It's been a long time coming."

He added: "Today Jerusalem is the seat of Israel's government. It is the home of the Israeli legislature and the Israeli supreme court and Israel's prime minister and president.

"Israel is a sovereign nation with the right like every other sovereign nation to determine its own capital. Yet for many years we failed to acknowledge the obvious. The plain reality that Jerusalem is Israel's capital.

Mr Trump said he had accomplished the relocation "many many years ahead of schedule", adding that the US would "always be a great friend to Israel and a partner in the cause of freedom and peace".

For someone who's calling other people dumb, you're really as a dumb as a rock! Who are the Palestine? Can you tell me where they existed in history??

Anyone who has any knowledge of history would tell you that Jerusalem is a Jewish homeland. That's a historical fact. Because the Jews went into exile doesn't and wouldn't change a historical fact. The people that calls themselves Palestine today are Jordanians. So, yes, Palestine has a homeland and that homeland is the country of Jordan. Jerusalem is a Jewish homeland and it would remain so; there's nothing that either the UN, Russia, Germany, France, United Kingdom, and all the Islamic countries combined can do to change that!

Why are Nigerian christians so dumb. Why support oppression of the weak by the strong? Many of u watch Nollywood and know nothing about the politics and history of this conflict.
The Palestinians have made numerous concession for peace. The Israelis made peaceful resolution of the crisis impossible because they are stronger.
For the igbos suporting these crimes against humainty, sit and ask yourself if u ve conscience? If u cry marginalisation or genocide against igbos when the python dances what is different from this one?
Mind u I am Igbo and of course a christian.
Palestinians are humans like u and I living under years of blockade.
Late Nelson Mandela said that the freedom of South Africans without the liberation of the Palestinians is incomplete. He stood against this oppression till his death. No wonder, the Israelis never attended his funeral

Yesterday's game clearly shows that this FC Barcelona football club is just an average team without Leo Messi. Remove Messi from the squad and this team wouldn't even make the third position in La Liga. Remember that they were losing badly a few weeks earlier but that day they were lucky to have Messi on the bench. And Messi was thrown into the game and he scored TWO quick goals to pull off a draw for Barca!

Messi plays the role of 3 players for the team: he's their creative genius, their best scorer, and coupled with the fact that their opponents often assigns 3 or more players to watch Messi alone thereby creating spaces for the other Barca players to operate. Seriously, Messi never gets enough credit from the pundits. You'd hear them mentioning names like Iniesta, Busquets, Luis Suarez, etc alongside Messi!! Sometimes it makes me wonder what game they are watching sef.

Hopefully, this defeat would open the eyes of some folks to re-evaluate the value of Leo Messi to that football club.
