PoliticsRe: A Lesson The North Should Learn From Paraguay' Before Rejecting Restructuring by igbeke: 10:31pm On Jul 30, 2017
Isoko1stSon:
A Look Back At History...

Today is the 29th of July... And 51 years ago, the bloodiest pogrom that ever took place in the history of Nigeria, happened!
Soldiers of Northern extraction, led by Murtala Mohammed, with active involvement of Yakubu Danjuma unleashed a terror that left over 300 Igbo soldiers, Dead!
This indeed was the beginning of the journey that led into the Civil War that began in June of 1967.
As a fallout of this slaughter of Igbo officers in the military, in Ibadan, Abeokuta and Lagos, Northern youths also went on rampage, killing an estimated 3,000 Igbo residents in the north, with this pogrom, it was inevitable that a war of sorts will ensue, which in fact happened..

Today, 51 years after, echoes of war are being sounded, and majorly by another set of Northern youths, this time around however, there is no counter coup to a perceived Igbo coup of January 15, 1966, rather the Northern youths' reaction, is to a National cry for the need to Restructure the country along a peaceful, Fiscal and political lines...

This time around however, it is a completely different situation.
It is the need to right the wrongs, to balance the Equity, eliminate Inequality and establish True Federalism, which FOUR ZONES, out of the SIX ZONES, that make up the Nigerian political demography, actively support against the other two of the core North, in which seemingly the North East and the North West appear to be very much against...!

It is also a reversal of sorts, while the cry from the EAST is loudest, it is mostly peaceful, with the West also engaging in Intellectual discourse of it, pamphleteering it... And from every hall, one could hear portions of Yoruba intelligentsia’s colloquy about the need to Restructure. The South South have been mostly militant but never declaring war on the whole, while the Middle Belt have also expressed the wish to be free of the clutches of the feudal core North.

The drums of war this time is being beaten by the Northern youths who have also given an ultimatum to the Easterners to leave the North or stay at the Risk of Death..

As I ponder on these realities on a day of remembrance such as this, my mind was cast to a period in time, in far away Paraguay, when a leader of the feudal kind, wanted to show his Machismo at it led to the most singular devastation of the kind never seen in modern times that nearly 90% of the male population perished..
This to many was the most unnecessary war ever fought.
I hope the Northern youths, who issued a threat recently that the North will rather go to war than allow Restructuring can take a pause and see that if such should happen, they will be the ones to suffer it all and, Lose...

The fact is that 60% of Paraguay’s population (and whopping 90% of the male population) perished from effects of the War of the Triple Alliance (1864–1870).
Up to 300,000 Paraguayans died in that war. If the Soviet Union population in WW2 suffered as heavy losses as the Paraguayans, that would mean that about 100 million Soviet citizens would have died instead of 20 million deaths.
In some regions, the male population was so devastated that the women outnumbered men 20–1.
In a typical region in post war Paraguay, women outnumbered men 4–1....The Catholic church even lifted the ban on polygamy in Paraguay with hopes of increasing the devastated population.

Paraguay also lost 40% of it’s territory to the allied nations of Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay.
At this stage in the war, most Paraguayan troops would have been completely malnourished, little uniformed, and very few weapons. Most Paraguayan soldiers were expected to find weapons from their dead comrades.

This unnecessary war occurred all because a Paraguayan president once wanted to show his machismo to his neighboring counterparts ,who demanded that they adjust boundaries and allow free trade..
And to prove that he has what it takes to win a war despite not having military experience himself he boasted That He Would Rather Go to War Than Adjust Boundaries..

Just A Reminder To The Northern Youths,The Commanders of The Nigerian Army That Won The Civil War For Nigeria ,Where Not If Northern Extraction , Murtala Muhammed Failed Heavily and Was Disgraced Out Of The War Front,Those Who Won The War Where Commanders Such As Gen. Alani Akinrinade, Gen.Victor Adekunle ,Gen Obasanjo Etc...

Since IPOBS have said they're no longer interested in this British contraption called "One Nigeria", and their supreme leader advised them to boycott elections, why didn't he advise the students to boycott an evil Fulani created scheme called NYSC? grin grin why can't they start from there by making their statements?

I was on facebook seeing their posts "Maiduguri here I come", "Katsina I'm here" cheesy cheesy, I hope the chest beaters will have enough fight in them to campaign for Biafra there, and where their multi colored biafran caps and slippers there grin

If they had advised their students to boycott NYSC and reject any postings, that would have really made a statement, but no, they best they can do is rant online undecided undecided
Those that say Nigeria is a failed state are damn right.

Even the so-called youths that are supposed to see beyond their noses, are satisfied being petty as lickers to the politicians.

Imagine a youth who, after going through hell to raise fees for university education, finished the rigors of the so-called NYSC, only to settle for a #50'000/month ($140) job is here boasting of the same system that has greatly shortchanged him. Whereas, the same politician sends his child abroad with our collective money which they stole, to attend the best of schools with pocket money that is enough to take your father our of poverty in the first place. The grades are not important because a job is already waiting for him in the CBN or NNPP.
It is a pity

Nnamdi Kanu and the Igbos want to go, but Nigerians are kicking. Let them go and see if 10 years from now, you will not beg to get their visa so you can get a cleaner's job there.
BTW, if this your level of reasoning is what you call "educated", then I say it is a waste.

How many of us, can still sing the anthem? What does Nigeria mean to you beyond ethnic, regional and religious narratives.

The anthem says a lot about the simple effort required to make Nigeria work. It is our collective civic duty. We must embrace the philosophy of stoicism in order to change our country for the best. Our children must inherit a better country than we met.

The "labour of our heroes past, shall never be in vain". Think about it. When something is not working, or you encounter challenges in your endeavor, you should fix it. Don't be a runner! Op, I like your patriotism. It is just normal for every reasonable person to love and pray for his/her country. Infact the Holy Scripture admonishes us to do so.
However, it is an undeniable fact that Nigeria has irredeemably failed as a nation. Keeping it together will mean we all and our children will remain backward when compared to other people from other parts of Africa.
Have you ever asked yourself why is it that our politicians find pleasure in taking their families abroad for education, shopping, holidays, medicals, tourism etc?
These are privileges you can never dream of enjoying if you are an ordinary citizen like me.
All of them have acquired accommodations abroad with our money where they can hide and keep their family members for safety in case any "yawa gas".
And yet they come to tell you that Nigeria unity is non negotiable.
The Fulanis have turned other tribes of the same country to rams that they slaughter at will with every little or no provocation and our men in uniforms will keep deaf ears. Yet the same Nigeria security apparatus will be deployed to the fulani herdmen's aids, should those they are killing wants to retaliate. Still our unity is non negotiable.

Let us restructure this country so every federating unit will have a sense of belonging and hence, development can be facilitated; the North says No. - that Nigeria can only be restructured on their own terms. If not, then you are calling for war. Yet you are wondering who owns this country and lord over the other "supposed equal shareholders".

Only cowards die many times before their death. If we must remain together, then we must learn to respect others' disposition towards national issues that affect us all.
As for the One Nigeria you crave and solicit for, ....
Sorry, Nigeria is dead and we must all bury and let it rest in peace.

Masterclass32:
- Annkio Briggs called for a
change of Nigeria's current
structure

- The activist said the north was
benefiting than the rest of the
country

- She noted that the northern
region was contributing nothing to the country

Annkio Briggs who is an environmental activist from the Niger Delta has lashed out at the current Nigeria structure that sees the north benefit more from allocation sharing.

In an interview with The Punch, Briggs noted that the north was at an advantage over the rest of the country due to having more states and local government.

She said: “Today, we have a 36-
state country with six geopolitical zones. The North has 19 states; the South has 17 states. Looking at that, you have a situation where the North has more senators in the Senate and the South has less.

“What that means is that, if there is a bill that will be in the favour of the South, like what happened with the Petroleum Industry Bill – there is no way that PIB would have been passed if the North said it should not be passed. In the North, you have 19 states, 419 local government areas, 58 senatorial seats and 191 House of Representatives seats.

'' The South has 17 states, 357 local government areas, 51 senatorial seats and 169 House of Representatives seats. So, if the Yoruba, all the ethnic groups in the Niger Delta, and the Igbo who are members of the National Assembly agree on anything that would benefit their people, and the North say no, the North’s
position would be upheld.

“We have six zones; all the zones must have equal number of states. You cannot have a situation where census was done and a state like Kano insists that it is more in population and therefore it must have 44 local government areas, but Bayelsa has only eight local government areas.

“When you have allocation that is shared based on the number of local government councils, you would find how unjust the sharing is. The North, in terms of oil and gas, produces zero.

“Yet, when we share based on local government allocation, the North gets 54.9 (per cent) of what we bring to the table. We (South-South) that bring 100 per cent get 45.1 per cent. Of course, it is injustice. When you go by state allocation, the North gets 57 per cent of 100 per cent that they are bringing zero per cent of, but the entire South is getting 43 per cent.

“In the allocation of oil and gas,
the South-South brings 91.54 per
cent, the South-West, that is, the
oil in Ondo State is 3.97 per cent.
The oil in the South-East is 2.75 per cent. The North-Central, North-East and North-West brings 0.00 per cent, and yet, they take home
more.

“Somehow, people are able to
overlook this and focus on the
Niger Delta Development Commission that the government
owes, and focus on Amnesty and
the Ministry of Niger Delta.

“We are saying, ‘Let go of the
amnesty. Let go of the NDDC. The
Ministry of Niger Delta, let go off it. The North-East Development Fund, let go of it. Let go of every
palliative. Let everybody use what it has.’ That is the only justice that we will entertain now and pay tax to the Federal Government”

djevino:
-The Northern Elders Forum warned agents of secession in the country to desist from it

- The NEF reminded those championing the agitation for secession to learn lessons from the Nigerian civil war

Northern elders in Nigeria have warned those fanning the embers of disunity in the country to immediately desist from it.

Under the Northern Elders Forum, the leaders in the region said Nigeria cannot break-up and that they were committed to this unity which started since 1914.

While cautioning against the quit notice issued to Igbo people in the north, they also described those agitating for secession as agents of disunity.

They also condemned some elders in the region for making alleged unguarded comments that could further cause chaos in the country.

“It is unfortunate that at this moment, such unguided remarks are coming out from supposedly elders of the region,” a leader of the forum, Dr. Paul Unongo said when he paid a condolence visit to the family of late Maitama Sule.

According to Unongo, those causing troubles in the country do not understand the reality of the country.

He also said those issuing the quit notice and are speaking in favour of it do not represent the north and have not learnt any lesson from the Nigerian civil war.

He said: “No safe haven of those whose penchant for disunity is on a crude pedestal, regardless of the consequences of their campaign of attrition.

“An evidence of our commitment as one northern entity and to sustain the legacy left behind by Danmasanin is the decision of my colleagues in the Forum to trust me with its leadership.”
The more reason I dislike Hausa/Fulani and whatever they stand for.
Did you read through what you typed before posting it? That is the mentality in the north - you guys talk as if you own Nigeria. And that is the problem the Igbos have with you.
If heaven will fall, then everyone must be prepared to be crushed.
Let everyone go and let's see who feels the heat most - parasites or the hosts.

You see, true development is deliberately planned for. It doesn't just happen. In real countries, their citizens are proud of them because they see things working.
Igbo wants to leave. So how does that amounts to destruction of a country? If you choose to remain, thats your cup of tea. What do we make of a country where an individual owns a fleet of private jet…? — Okogie

EMERITUS Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, Anthony Cardinal Okogie, has described Nigeria as a nation without leaders, arguing that all available indices, including high level insecurity, abysmally low quality of life of the average Nigerian, in sharp contrast with the opulent lifestyle of politicians, offer little or no hope to even the most incurable optimist in the land.

Okogie, in an open letter, yesterday entitled “A Nation Without Leaders,”, averred that when a nation is in turmoil, those who have faith in God must pray. Given clear indices that Nigeria is in turmoil, we pray: Gracious God, grant that our leaders become wise, and the wise become our leaders. “But it would be irresponsible fideism to simply pray and fold our arms. Those who pray must think, and, having sought and obtained answers to right questions, they must act intelligently.” Okogie, who had in recent times written several letters to President Muhammadu Buhari to address the plight of the Nigerian masses, arguing that Nigerians hunger, not only for food, but also for good leadership, peace, security and justice, urged the APC government to do something fast, and “if you are already doing something, to redouble your effort. May it not be written on the pages of history that Nigerians died of starvation under your watch.”

The 81-year old cardinal, in his latest letter made available to Vanguard, yesterday, maintained that as the nation navigates from one turbulent season to another, “it has become inescapable to inquire: what is the quality of leaders—of the men and women at the helm of affairs—in our beloved Nigeria? “Can it be said that those at the helm of affairs—at federal, state, and local levels of government—are sufficiently competent to navigate the ship of state? Do our leaders fit the bill?” Painting a gleam picture, he said the high level of “insecurity in our land; the abysmally low quality of life of the average Nigerian, in scandalously sharp contrast with the opulence in which past and political office holders live; the self-serving and malevolent demagoguery that accompanies unitarist, secessionist, and xenophobic agitations in our country; the propagation of the stubborn myth that one’s ethnic community is marginalised by all other ethnic communities, when in fact every ethnic community is marginalised by the incompetence of our leaders; the acceptance of this myth by young, discontented but gullible Nigerians: these and many other indices offer little or no hope to even the most incurable optimist in the land. “Instead of devoting their mental and physical capacities to governance, our leaders are seeking their own interests. Nigerians bear the excruciating burden of being ruled by politicians who simply care less about Nigerians. “The burden is increased when they have to listen to religious leaders who whip up emotions and deceive by using the name of God, claiming visions and miracles. We do not care about our legacy, we care only about the power we wield, the wealth—often ill-gotten—we display, and above all, the pleasure and affluence we seek. “What do we make of a country where an individual owns a fleet of private jets while an overwhelming percentage of its citizens cannot afford a bus ride to the market? What do we make of a country where the wealth of the land, wealth that belongs to the people and not to government, is used to provide security for government officials, while there is no security for the average man or woman in the street?

“We have the police and the military; we have assorted security agencies with exotic names. Yet, Nigerians are robbed and murdered in their homes, abducted on the streets, at the mercy of gangsters, ritualists and cultists in their neighbourhood, while the police is helpless to the point of non-existence. The only sign that there is policing is when policemen and women extort money from Nigerians, often at gun point. “Our security agencies need to get the sequence of their steps right. Thorough investigation must precede an arrest, diligent prosecution with evidence must come before conviction in a lawfully constituted court. That is what obtains in other climes. But in our own Nigeria, media trial is fashionable.” The Cardinal concluded his letter by saying: “Precisely for these reasons, this country is in very urgent need of quality leadership. Our situation cannot be addressed by an executive and a legislature locked in a recurrence of unprincipled and sterile conflicts. In more concrete terms, neither an ailing and absent President nor an acting President can lead Nigeria out of the present situation. “Nigerian leaders must wake up lest the ship of state sink. They must stop fiddling while the country is burning. So we pray: Grant, O Lord, that our leaders become wise, and that the wise become our leaders. Amen.”
