Siena: 100,000 miles on the original timing chain and tensioners is plenty. Your car has done twice that mileage. To be fair, it's the chain guides that wear out (the teflon linings). If left unchecked, the chain will now run against the exposed steel, causing rapid chain wear.

If the guides are replaced at the 100,000 (recommended) mile mark, the chain could certainly outlive the engine. Though once the chain is stripped off to replace the guides, most owners would opt to have the chain replaced too, for peace of mind. You definitely need this carried out by a franchised Volkswagen Centre, or at least an independent specialist, who knows his / her way around Audi or Volkswagen engines...

...Because the chain is at the rear of the engine. Replacement of the chain or guides requires engine removal, hence most owners would opt to have the chain replaced if the engine was pulled to replace the chain guides. It just makes no practical (or economic) sense to shove the engine back into the chassis with an old chain.
