Obrigardo:Hypocrisy is the GOP's strong suit.

CoolUsername:This person makes the argument not prosecuting Trump is treating him above the law. He argues prosecuting the crime of falsifying business records is common in NY. He adds cases to back up his point. Survey of Past New York Felony Prosecutions for Falsifying Business Records https://www.justsecurity.org/85605/survey-of-past-new-york-felony-prosecutions-for-falsifying-business-records/ |
budaatum:Compare what happened post Holocaust to what happened post slavery. Could you imagine finding Hitler's bust anywhere? budaatum:You're more hopeful than I. There was a recent poll that said Conservatives would want an autocratic government if it supported their views. I think Trump's election was a seismic shift in terms of how people view Democracy. budaatum:Yes, I was both siding it when I really meant the Biden roll backs were good. But still, the US I think is far behind things like basic infrastructure (Detroit - lead in the water, failing Bridges, etc.) let alone developing for the future. And that is a byproduct of having crazy Republican rule and hence no continuation of policies. I didn't even know Carter had put solar panels on the White-House and Reagan took them down. Imagine where the US would had been now if we had invested in Solar then. In terms of systems being accepted. I'm thinking more of the future as China becomes a bigger player and more people see the upsides of having a dictator vs. democracy. Already thanks to Trump Democracy is backsliding in countries like Mexico and Israel. In fact, as I said, I could see Republicans embracing it. |
budaatum:You are right about the majority position vis a vis Brown v. Board. Found a "poll", that had it at 55-40 in support right after the decision. But that 49% of whites supported it. In researching that I wondered about the Dread Scott decision (basically a US Supreme court decision that said African Americans could never be US citizens) and found the justice who penned the decision still his bust prominently displayed in Congress up until 2022 when it was replaced with a bust of Thurgood Marshall. The US really really didn't give a sh*t about black people. Agree about the education, but that is all good until you have someone like a DeSantis decide what can and can't be thought. But, there is a real debate in terms of what type of system works best. Look at China. They have the ability to strategize and implement long term objectives(belt and road, energy, infrastructure.. etc etc.) because they have a dictator for life. While every 4 years a new US President comes in and rolls back what the previous one did while Congress is focused on platitudes trying to win the next election. |
budaatum:Benaalvino3 seems to an appeaser mixed with side of Stockholm syndrome. But I guess living in Nigeria may do that to you. At a point some people have to be ok not wanting more or expecting more to be sane right? So, why should black people want equality when they should be happy with what they have. Or why should Ukrainians want their liberty and freedom, when they should just be happy taking what the Russians are giving them or allow them to have. Look at his last argument. Basically, just be happy you are in the US, don't complain about lack of equality, don't expect better or more. It's like his soul has been dominated. |
Republicans arguing that Trump paying off a PORN STAR who he was cheating on his pregnant wife with is a purely personal matter because he used personal funds. Ha. "The party of Christ". It's going to be a crazy, very interesting "Legal" period if Trump does get indicted and has to stand trail somewhere. It's going to strain our Legal institution and the concept that everyone is equal under the law.. well publicly strain it as we know it's not true. Ex. What happens with the Secret Service if he has to stand trial? How do they protect him without prejudicing the Prosecution? Can they be in court, do they sit next to him? Can they research the jurors for threats? And if he does run for President at the same time? What if he gets indicted and convicted and is in jail, yet somehow wins the Presidency? Can he be president. The last one is a stretch but seems there will be a lot of issues that spring up. |
Obrigardo:Imagine a person who lives in a country where he will never be a racial minority and who's never been anywhere where he can understand being a racial minority lecturing to others on what racism is or isn't. |
budaatum:I would say yes, if tempered with minority rights. Thinking what the majority opinion in the US would have been during Brown v. Board of Education. But, I do think people's opinions change so there should be a period where a leader can implement things that may be unpopular and let them play out. In the US we have impeachment if a President does something that outrageous, but needs a supermajority to pass. But, yes standing up in Parliament would be nice. I think only two recent Presidents would have been effective. Clinton and Obama. Bush 2 was an idiot. Trump was an idiot who didn't study. Biden is knowledgeable but always made gaffes and his age doesn't help. To the rest, I'm not knowledgeable enough about UK political systems to have an informed perspective. |
To inject a little fact into this fiction. John Edwards was indicted for similar. And at the time there was widespread belief that he would be the Dem standard bearer after Kerry lost. He was indicted soon after that election by his ex rival Bush's DOJ (edit). I don't remember any Dem holding hearings on the politicization of the Justice Department for going after an ex-VP candidate and former Senator who was most likely running again. https://www.businessinsider.com/john-edwards-last-presidential-candidate-charged-with-campaign-finance-violations-2023-3

budaatum:I'm not so sure. Sometimes policies take time to percolate and there may be intense anger at it's inception. Seems like a recipe to hue too closely to current popular opinion. |
Obrigardo:He's definitely not well. Gives off Christian Cultish vibes like Branch Davidian. As you said, I can't imagine someone spending day and night immersed in all that fringe Right wing propaganda. |
BraniacX:Yes, mostly agree with the first part. But I do believe the US always leans toward moral justice as evidenced by what Carter did. Yes, that is what Russia is trying to do. I don't see it being successful as well since the West esp. Europe also has an imperative not to allow Russia to control that region and what it produces. I'm really not sure what Russia is doing, seems very destructive esp. in this generation. But I watched some of Zelensky's tv show "servant of the People" and was amazed at how much of a Western influence the show had. Even jokes based on Western history. I can understand why Russia hates it so. |
BraniacX:Ideally, yes. The issue is the yes man, not forging strategic alliances. Nigeria is so far behind that we do need strategic partnerships and we can negotiate good deals if we have good leadership. And I'd rather the US align with the US/Western alliances than what is shaping up to be a China led alternative. |
EnlightenedUFO:Right. They are kids... let them eat healthy food, if they want. We got to be a better society than that. |
budaatum:Don't know enough about the British parliamentary system. But given all the turmoil the last few years (multiple PM's), is it really a better system than the US? I do appreciate the debating style in Parliament though. I think what holds the US back is the electoral college and the fact states like Wyoming have disproportion representation. https://www.nytimes.com/2022/10/27/learning/whats-going-on-in-this-graph-nov-9-2022.html Need to spend some time on Nigerian History maybe a book on tape/podcast I can listen to on my next long drive.

EnlightenedUFO:Watching "from afar" the Nigerian elections and then watching the machinations of the GOP reminds me that the US political climate isn't too too far from Nigeria and how it can devolve. From what Reagan did, to Trump calling for protests (dog whistle to violence), the Speaker of the House McCarthy trying to weaponize the Federal Govt. against a City DA, and the calls that Laws we have shouldn't be enforced because a man was once a politician. The difference is that we have an "pseudo independent" Judiciary and a Dem party filled mostly with people who want to do the right thing. |
EnlightenedUFO:I'm not even sure what the argument against free school lunch is. Seems rational that a minimum kids should be fed while at school. I'm ok with my taxes going up to pay for it. And the argument against this is from the "party of Christ". I think the fact more and more people are walking away from Christianity is because Republicans have coopted it in service of things like this and people like serial adulterer/constant liar Trump. |
This story is unbelievable, though won't get much coverage due to Trump. The NY Times is reporting that part of Reagan's election strategy to win against Carter was to tell the Iranians not to release American prisoners because they would get a better deal if he won. https://www.nytimes.com/2023/03/18/us/politics/jimmy-carter-october-surprise-iran-hostages.html

basilico:This post is my point.. AGAIN. If you had lived in the US, you would have known what happened in 2008 that the FED had to drop the interest rate down so much and keep it there for a while. But you don't live in the US and seem to not be even aware of the global consequences of 2007-08 Financial/Banking Crisis. So you spend your life here(literally day and night) sounding like an idiot, while actually too much of an idiot to even understand how much of an idiot you are. And all the while repeating misinformation, disinformation and propagating racism. |
For the Umpteenth time the FED is an independent agency and the agency that decides to raise or lower interest rates. Biden has no control over it. If you don't live in the US, never been to the US, haven't studied the US and decide to spend your lives in the thread of a country you have no relation to, at least research the topic that you are opining on so you are not continuously repeating misinformation. Anyone who reads these posts here will come out dumber for it. |
Obrigardo:Yes. Though I felt like that bit was Graham "helping" Trump by making it seem he just got caught up in the lies rather than being the one pushing the lies.

CoolUsername:He was part of SVB securities which has the same parent company as SVB Bank. But you see how you gave him the benefit of the doubt you did not extend to the Indian woman who was park of the UK subsidiary? |
CoolUsername:When it's a minority woman who isn't even in the C suite, it's her fault for doing other things. When it's a white man who has been the CFO and CAO of two failed banks, it's bad luck? Lol. You don't even see your bias to even start to address it. Edit: he was actually the CAO of a subsidiary SVB Financial the parent company of SVB Bank. |
Obrigardo:His post reads like someone who read the first few pages of a book and then decided to give a lecture on the book. He really doesn't have a grasp of how a bill becomes law or even who raises interest rates. Honestly, this thread seems to be have become a cesspool of misinformation and unintelligent ramblings. |
budaatum:I wanted to emphasize his wrongness.. so he wouldn't easily slither away on this one. And that cousin quote is actually US news.
|
CoolUsername:Oh, you couldn't pick out the WOKE LGBTQ minority responsible for crashing the bank in the picture of all the mostly white SVB execs right? Right. Because your narrative is Bullshit. In the real less delusional world, we are all laughing at how easily it is to turn Nigerians like you into "useful idiots" that parrot right wing racist memes. Or as Tucker Carlson's producer put it.. "Terrorists, but especially dumb ones. Cousin f----- types". Really, do you ever get tired of being made an idiot? |
budaatum:Interesting theory (enslaved Adams). I'll have to check out the post in the religious section. |
CoolUsername:I thought you would do one of two things. Either disappear or double down and try to disorient us with BullSh*t. Seems you chose the latter path. Here is a pic of the executive team. Maybe you can tell me where she is here since she had that much power that she alone is responsible for crashing the company because of her LGBTQ activities. Just be honest, admit you were fooled and move on.

Yeah, I'm done with Florida. Charges dropped against man arrested for road rage shooting on I-95 https://www.local10.com/news/local/2023/03/10/charges-dropped-against-man-arrested-for-road-rage-shooting-on-i-95/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JOOaadwr5YU |
Tucker Carlson's producer is spot on on dealing with some of the Far right, like some in this thread. "Like negotiating with terrorists," he added, but especially dumb ones. Cousin f----- types not saudi royalty." https://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:SgAl7q22AZMJ:https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2023/03/12/raj-shah-fox-trump/&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us

budaatum:Neither matters. The truth is the company probably wanted to align with the values of the people who lent them money to get more of their money so focused more on diversity. It was probably just a cost of doing business in the very specific San Fran VC culture. So, they hired a head of diversity who was so close to real power she was in another country (being sarcastic). A write off like the cost of company vacations or Taco Tuesdays. Put a token DEI coordinator in place, base them in another country and get the feels that you are doing something. All the while the SVB executive team is majority white. (pic below). This is a red herring the right does so well to distract and obfuscate from some of these root causes; Deregulation and the FED leaving interest rates low for so long. And who championed both.. yup Trump and Republicans. The 2008 bank collapse was worse.. how many of those companies were "woke"? This is why America is fundamentally going to struggle. Half the country is too stupid to know better and their leaders play on their stupidity. Look at this thread. Stupid abounds.
