I don't agree that Nigeria should align with the US. We should not align with anyone, but continue to be non aligned. We go with who best serves our interest (both short and long term interests). The US has proven to be an unreliable ally. Those third world countries that aligned with the US has nothing to show for it outside US teleguided democracy, US culture and morals and US aids that's akin to a Greek gift.
Raskimonojendor:
I think Nigeria aligns/relates more with the USA than China or Russia. Russia is not even in the equation at all. Forget the Putin's Nairaland rave in the foreign section. They are insignificant.

With China through the Belt and Road Initiative, China now accounts for 12% of Africa’s $696 billion external debt. Outside the BRI program, chinese have other inroads into Africa though by lending to the average African/Nigerian man on the street. The internet/app loan menace often discussed on Nairaland and outside Nairaland are the creations of Chinese loan sharks.
budaatum:
It's not about aligning, but about learning from. That said, Nigeria has aligned with US since after our Civil War. We after all did not adopt the political systems of Russia or China. What we seem to be adopting from China at least is the opportunity to sell our goods. Basically, we align where there's market.
Agreed to a degree. I think there is a danger in aligning with China morally, and because of the ease of doing business and travelling there, that is more apt to happen. Was speaking to a friend who is a player in the Naija Finance world. Was saying something about China, and he said, nah, China isn't that bad. Was interesting sentiment given who he is and it caused me to 1.) do a double take and 2.) make a note to reconsider my views. Which itself was interesting.

Esp. after visiting Panama, are these countries/places that heavily partnered with the US worse off? Places like South Korea, Taiwan, Japan, Hong Kong? I don't know.. But I am curious. Cuz, I'm not sure Nigeria has the ability to get where it needs to go anywhere soon. Not because we as a people aren't bright, but because our government doesn't have the ability.

I often wonder when Nigeria will consider such doings.
It was a US project. But I do think Nigeria should be more closely aligned with the US. But, look at the views even in this thread. And instead we are aligning with China and Russia?

We really are just asking you to consider doing the same here because we believe in your ability to so do.
Listen, it's not about me or my ability to do so. I would generally agree with you, except he doesn't only attempt to bully me. And I've never been one to stand by and watch someone bully other people.

Let's drop this though. You can report any of my posts you feel derail this thread. It won't offend me. I understand and I'll accept the consequences.

Dude, Chill. listen to budaatum, But your attention-seeking craze will not let you. You are usually the first to try and bully someone here. and people like you are the ones who usually fold when you get the same treatment.

don't conflate push back to bragging.

I don't support him. I Hardly talk to him. I only do it when we have something to talk about. Each time he has suggested to me not to tolerate you... I tell him, I can mess around with people, but if they are not stepping on my toes, I will be Nice and friendly to them.

When I first got here... the Guy I call your father was insulting me. Without knowing who I am, where I have been, where I work etc. He said I am poor, my parents are poor and he can feed my entire generation. I usually don't respond to him. He speaks like you... If you have not been in a plane, or if you have not been in the US... blabla, you can't have an opinion. Just like you, he does not say this thing to the people who align with his idea that are in Nigeria.

So cry all you want. as for me, I have asked you not to be naive with your idea that people can't have opinions because they are not in the US.
But for Basilico, what is your beef with him? the dude barely mentions your name. He is one of the nice guys here... takes a lot of crap but he still composes himself. why mention him up and down?

you are emotionally weak but you are the first to always pick a fight. I have told you before, no one is forcing you to be here. if you cannot handle what you dish out, Vamoose
Ask yourself, how many posts like this have you written to Sly? That answer should help inform you whether you are an enabler or not.

Let me be frank. I don't care what you think. Until you live somewhere, experience something, study something, and if not come into a conversation with the view that you most likely aren't in the know, you're opinions are largely worthless... to me.

And FYI. During the pandemic some of my white friends let their new found ability to say racist stuff due to the atmosphere Trump created, free them of their inhibitions. I made the decision to first let them know and if they continued to separate them from my life. The stuff you write in these posts and propagate in this thread are equally offensive, even more so that you are a Nigerian. So, this is my last post to you and no need to respond to me as I won't to you. Pax.

Been thinking about US power. Was in Panama and I was impressed with the level of development. When I visited the museum I realized it was largely due to the Panama Canal which the US completed/owned (great impact of US economy and International Trade) up until Carter negotiated to give back to them in 2000. Didn't know any of this. The whole Panama locks (way or raising/lowering ships for the two differing levels of bodies of water) was very impressive. Anyhow, thought of our Politics and whether the US could do anything like that nowadays. I think the US considers Ukraine in the same vain (necessary for economic development). Learned most of this during a guided tour of a museum and the Locks, so if I'm off let me know. Pics below.

The only person he's bullying here is you. Most of us deal with its childishness by ignoring it because it's attempt at bullying is inconsequential and ineffective.

Most don't read what it writes, nor your responses to it. It will burn out once you stop fuelling it with your attention and time.
It's actually not just an attempt to bully me. And, by saying that it's like you're purposefully covering your eyes. He does it to other people as well. And it's destructive lies he makes up. And that's the only reason why I decided to push back more. But honestly, it's allowed to happen because he feels comfortable here, and has the likes of basilico, ben, etc. to support him. And the majority of posters here, don't push back when they do. So, this forum and thread has allowed his bullying.

Its childish playing who got biggest diq! Consider.
It's not about weakness, it's about allowing someone to bully people and sit by and watch, which some on this forum seem to be comfortable with. Not everyone has my strength or "your" strength to not let it affect them. You seem to be complaining to the wrong person, try the Mods.

You have been taking about, crt, banning books, etc. etc. It's like a conservative hit list of nonsense. Most of it makes me dumber just reading.
Like basilico talking about Biden releasing oil from the Reserve. Opening his mouth without understanding 1.) It drove gas prices down/ 2.)He sold it at the height of the oil market. And if he buys it back (to refill it) anywhere lower, he will be making money for the US. A win-win. And also complaining as if Biden caused the oil issue when Gas companies recorded record profits. Double that of 2019.

Or his new take on what is happening in Ohio. In one breath blaming Biden for not regulating an industry(It was Trump who cut back on the train regulations) without mentioning it is a Republican state and a state issue (you know republicans are against Federalism). But he will argue next week that there is too much regulation.

As, I said, it's performance politics, without a core understanding of the issues, nor even a plan to make it better.

There’s a reason why the country has the leaders it does. Some of the citizens talk like terrorists. Praising China, a country that is loaning their leaders money with crazy terms that their leaders are using to buy China’s old trains and build rails using materials bought from China. How do you borrow money from a country and spend it buying things from that same country? China is sending people to Africa that don’t respect Africans yet these guys are praising the country that wants to colonize their homeland.
Yup. When there is no accountability you can make those type of deals. I always try to understand the mindset of a Nigerian that can see how China and Russia treats it's citizens domestically yet praises them as if that's a governmental style to emulate.

Thanks. Will listen to them. Audio Books are great for long journeys as well.

Something of a unifying narrative/identity can go a long way towards building a better country. Which is what current day Nigeria doesn't have.
A reason secessionism keeps growing I think.

An idea of a Nigeria has to be sold to the people, wiether it's a grand ideas of becoming a real life Wakanda, or something that's just an economic and security union of convenience.

What I learned from Nigerian history is that it wasn't always like that. During and after our struggle for independence.
There existed a sense of nationalism based off an anti colonial and anti imperial sentiment. A drive for self determination, as well as ideas of Pan-Africanism, was present in our political class.
That died out during the series of military coups (and discovery of oil) that came after independence, and left us with a generation of a cynical and power grabbing political class, with no ideas or ideals.
Can you recommend a history book? Would like to get more familiar with Nigeria's history.

I agree with most of the things you said.
Given the current realities, the US would not survive a war with China.
That's the bottomline.
They were shamelessly defeated in Afghanistan. The talibans sent them running like monkeys with tails in between thier legs.
Those American soldiers died in vain.. survivors end up homeless with PTSD.

Exactly o!!!
They're depending on the lack of intelligence of their followers to sell this embarrassment as a competent and reasonable strategy.

One Ode suffering from inferiority complex keeps saying he (US sec of defense) is a millitary officer 'paid to think'
That's a waste of taxpayers money as the collective US leadership have shown they're in fact incapable of very basic thinking.
The millitary officers of the countries you consider to be inferior are paid to fry buns abi? grin

This fellow also used nairaland to tell me that nairaland is for broke peoole that do not think...can you just imagine grin
Everyone look at map o.
It transited over the Pacific Ocean before it got to Montana.
The US could have detected it and shot it down as soon as it got to the US territorial waters.

Did they shoot it down in international waters?
They could have shot it down in international waters before it got to the US or they could have shot it down as soon as it got to the US marine territorial boundary in the Pacific Ocean.
Does this mean any country can fly a 'spy balloon' through the Pacific ocean because the US is scared? grin
This is a moronic take. If the US military allowed it over the US, they already understood it's capabilities and chose to allow it. I don't blame you though, when you live in Nigeria and all you see is incompetence, why wouldn't your mind believe everyone else is equally incompetent.
