File this in Republicans being Republicans bin. So, Tenn. just pass some anti-LBTQ legislation, a piece of it being a drag ban. It was comical as the Governor had himself dressed in drag. Now, it has been reported that the Lt. Governor McNally who is married has been liking pics using his verified Lt. Gov account of a gay man who dresses as a women at times. https://tnholler.com/2023/03/anti-lgbtq-tennessee-lt-gov-mcnally-comments-on-racy-instagram-pics-of-young-gay-male/And sorry, I had to include the pic to punctuate the craziness. I thought the pic was newsworthy, but I edited it some.

DeepSight: @ benalvino3
Indulge me please a few more random questions.
1. Is there systemic racism in the USA against coloured people - with particular reference to African Americans?
2. Is there any significantly excessive police brutality towards African Americans in the USA?
3. Is it true or false that the history of African Americans in the USA - from slavery right through the major events of the 20th century and up till date provide sufficient reasons to conclude that African Americans have been historically economically deprived in the USA in such a way that they cannot reasonably be at par with the white population? Ben has been so deeply programmed by whatever right wing propaganda he ingests daily that he instinctively hates people who look like him. It's even wilder that he actually lives in Nigeria. His posts are rife with racism and derogatory Black stereotypes. It's depressingly sad. |

I watched the ex Capitol Police Chief said he requested for backup, in an interview. He was told by Piglosi's team that backup will not "paint the right optics". These were the words of the man in TV interview that I watched. Not some cooked up bullshit. You didn't watch it because it didn't happen. Either you made it up your mind or watched someone who convinced you it did. What you are referring to is the ex DC Guard Chief explain the curious decision made BY THE MILITARY by Trump Appointees not to send troops because of the optics, esp. of US troops fighting protestors. No evidence Pelosi ‘rejected’ Trump’s authorization for ‘20,000 National Guard’ before Jan. 6 attack https://www.politifact.com/factchecks/2022/jun/13/sean-hannity/no-evidence-pelosi-rejected-trumps-authorization-2/DC Guard chief agrees ‘optics’ slowed deployment during Capitol riot https://thehill.com/policy/defense/541409-dc-guard-chief-backs-up-law-enforcement-account-of-key-jan-6-call/You should maybe spend more time doing your own reading than listening to others and you'd sound and be more informed. ono: The highlighted bit of your post.
- I mean, c'mon man! Piglosi, Browser and McConnel knew such a huge crowd will descend on the Capitol. Why didn't they make provision for law enforcement backup to protect the building? - Trump on his part has said, repeatedly too - over the past 2 years, that he specifically requested for the National Guard to be deployed for the event. It was turned down by Piglosi and Mayor Browser. - The Capitol Police Chief, corroborated Trump's claim. He too requested for back-up from Piglosi's office. Someone in her office told him "it wasn't necessary - will not "provide the right optics".
How and why should I believe all you wrote up there? Most of what you posted is not true and talking points I know have been propagating via right wing media. You should have watched the 1/6 hearings. There was a lot of good information provided.. all by Trump's own people. Ex. The Capital Police Chief never said that. That narrative is false. I'm not relitigating it for you since the information is out there. It's your choice to to go find it, and find sources that actually report truthfully and also stop listening to the same people who continuously lie to you. So, you don't need to believe me. I assume you're here to discuss and learn things. I presented you facts, backed with sources. It's your choice what you do with it. I don't think it's a badge of honor to continue to repeat propaganda(your post) or continue to be wrong. At least not for me. |

ono: Tucker’s version of what transpired on J6 is overwhelmingly convincing. I will not argue any further.
I want to agree with you that we should double check information before coming to post stuff. But all these past two years Demonrats have made it extremely difficult to believe their version of what happened. They basically showed what supported their narrative that there was a “violent insurrection”.
Think about it buda, for a second. Is it really possible that those guys who were at the Capitol on J6 really went there to overthrow the US government ? Do you know what that entails ?
I’m sorry buda. I don’t agree with you. We’ve never agreed on most things anyways. So. I think the question you should consider is why why you think Tucker was overwhelmingly convincing. Read this article about some of his texts between him and his producer re: Jan. 6th. They tell a different story of his concern than what he is expressing now. https://www.mediaite.com/news/brutal-new-texts-reveal-tucker-carlson-and-producer-horrified-by-deadly-trump-anger-spiral-on-jan-6/And here is the DOJ convicting Oath Keepers for seditious conspiracy for Jan. 6th. Remember, this verdict had to be unanimous.. meaning 12 jurors out of 12 found that they were guilty. https://thehill.com/policy/national-security/3755252-oath-keepers-leader-found-guilty-of-seditious-conspiracy/There was a plan to overtake and hold hostage Congress drawn up complete with a weapons cache stored at a local hotel if they needed them. Hence the conviction. Yes, the plan wasn't wasn't up to snuff, but a lot of what didn't happened were thanks to those police who were in hand to hand combat with people at the doors, which gave the Congress just enough time to evacuate. Imagine what could have happened if they had caught Pelosi or some other congressperson. I watched it live and was in shock, shock at how any of it was possible and why there was no backup coming. And months later, the one thing that reminded how crazy that day was the texts of the Secret Service agents protecting Pence, who have an understanding they may aways die in duty. They had text their family (wives. etc) goodbyes, because they thought/were in fear they may die that day. It's reprehensible for Tucker Carlson to spin it they way he did. |

budaatum: Lead the court that saw the evidence placed before it and decided to throw Capital Rioter in jail!
Ben, do you seriously think the lawyer for Capital Rioter would not have seen the evidence that would make his client plead guilty? The prosecutor can not provide evidence in court that the defender can not see in total, or do you not know that?
I guess it is very possible, that the Capital Rioter's lawyer was that negligent, might even have been hired by Biden! So make sure b.b&t&co sue him too along with the appeal. You're spending a lot of time trying to rationalize to people who are so deeply programmed that even when they learn that their programmers have been lying to them(Fox News), they'll just as easily turn on that programmer. There is nothing new in this but just a continuation of their troubled minds. Just add this to the litany of things like, just from recent memory, the Parkland shooters, pizzagate, Seth Rich, Qanon, the stolen election, etc. etc. Now it's Jan. 6th, which we all watched in horror, was just a peaceful tour all instigated by someone named Ray Epps (does it even make sense?). I think a more meaningful discussion is what leads people to discard fact based reality and cling to these delusions, despite a plethora and an abundance of evidence to the contrary. |

These texts are brutal. Fox and CO. are EVIL. Imagine all the lives they've destroyed just to turn a profit. Brutal New Texts Reveal Tucker Carlson and Producer Horrified By ‘Deadly’ Trump ‘Anger Spiral’ On Jan. 6 https://www.mediaite.com/news/brutal-new-texts-reveal-tucker-carlson-and-producer-horrified-by-deadly-trump-anger-spiral-on-jan-6/Producer – Millions believe that the election was stolen because of Donald Trump and demagogues like this Drew guy.
Producer – They take the president literally. He said it was stolen. They believe him. He is to blame for everything that happened today.
Carlson – The problem is a little deeper than that I’d say.
Producer – Obviously the problems are deep but at the core of it is Trump saying It was stolen.
Carlson – Not the core, Awful but a symptom
Producer – He promoted today’s rally a month ago and said it would be “wild”
Producer – Come on
Producer – There is just too much circular logic going around. Yes millions of people think the election was stolen, but they didn’t just wake up with that belief. They were told it was stolen and that was amplified in talk radio/memes etc.
Producer – *Don’t feel like arguing in that group chat. I agree with your text.
Producer – But sometimes things are simple. Our job is to react nightly to the news of the day not deliver a thesis on what ails America. The president of the United States has told his supporters daily for months that the election was stolen. His allies parroted this. He promoted a massive rally in DC. They all flew in. He then encouraged them to go to the Capitol and the rest is history. Yes he is symptom but today was its own event. If a boxer gets knocked out and dies in the ring. I could talk about how he grew up poor and thats why he chose such a dangerous profession.
Carlson – No our job is not to provide news coverage. Not even close. Our job is to explain what things mean
Producer – Well to explain what things mean it would require explaining why people think the election was stolen. I get that we have to thread the needle and we have an audience with certain beliefs. So it’s tough. It’s just frustrating. It’s impossible to accurately explain today’s events without mentioning the president and the lies. Not just the lies about the fraud, but maybe more importantly the lies giving people hope. As Charlie and I said in the group chat the other day, countless people ask us if Trump can still pull this off. It’s a shame so many think that.
Producer – People were enraged today because they thought Mike Pence would save the day.
Carlson – Trump has two weeks left. Once he’s out, he becomes incalculably less powerful, even in the minds of his supporters. My view is that the most important thing we can do — maybe the only thing we can do — is try to save the things that make America worth living in. For me that begins with the first and second amendments.
Producer – Agreed. I just worry in those two weeks time and the time after that he will inspire people to do even more stuff to put those rights in jeopardy.
Carlson – There’s no question he will. He’s a demonic force, a destroyer. But he’s not going to destroy us. I’be been thinking about this every day for four years.
Producer – You’re right. I don’t want to let him destroy me either. The Trump anger spiral is vicious.
Carlson – That’s for sure. Deadly. It almost consumed me in November when Sidney Powell attacked us. It was very difficult to regain emotional control, but I knew I had to. We’ve got two weeks left. We can do this.
Producer – This crazy q stuff has consequences.
Producer – It also takes lots of demagogues for them to believe this stuff. Trump never disavowed this Q shit or Lin Wood or any of the insanity.
Carlson – (REDACTED)
Pfeiffer – This is from Theo. The Q movement is sincerely dangerous. Don’t really know how to stop it. Hopefully Trump being out of the presidency deflates it as its central premise right now is that he will serve a second term and that people need to “Trust the plan.” Many of the people at the Capitol yesterday wore Q t shirts. It really takes a hold of people. From then: “We have these friends — He’s a doctor. She’s a nurse. Both apolitical before 2013. They went from generally supportive of Trump to MAGA to devoted Fox watchers to Alex Jones followers to Q folks. They believed that Trump would “fix” the election. When I pointed out to them that even if Trump ‘fixed’ the election, it wouldn’t matter now because the Senate would impeach. The woman’s answer was: then we suspend the Congress. Again, normal people. Didn’t even follow politics four years ago. Probably were soft Democrats. They now think there’s a ‘righteous restoration afoot’
Carlson – Not surprised. All misdirected religious impulses. Secular societies don’t work.

Very peculiar; in the midst of Tucker's "lying in public/telling the truth in private scandal", people on this board are still quoting his public tv show as a reference. The delusion runs deep. Funny, how the private comments of Tucker vis a vis Trump mirror the thoughts of most Democrats or rational intelligent people. The Tucker Carlson Schtick Melts Away We finally know what the Fox News host really believes.
It has been self-evident for a long time to almost every astute observer of Tucker Carlson — his friends, his acquaintances in the journalism profession, even some viewers of his nightly Fox News Channel program — that he doesn’t believe half of the things he says on his show. That obvious truth can now be enjoyed more widely, including by fans of his show, which happens to be the most popular single attraction in cableland, thanks to new filings released from the $1.6 billion defamation lawsuit Dominion Voting Systems has leveled against Fox. https://www.politico.com/news/magazine/2023/03/08/tucker-carlson-phony-fox-00086126

budaatum: Somehow, I understand the opposite from the article you posted. It's title alone is The Hinduization of India Is Nearly Complete, which is already "serious issues for the religious minority groups", though we could argue if or how much the 'government' is pushing for its Hindustification especially if we exclude Hindu Modi from said government.
"A Muslim minority would inevitably be subordinate to the Hindu majority" it says in what I could read in the link you posted, and from what I've heard, plurality is not guaranteed unless you are Hindu, despite the "constitution guarantees". People still need to be sufficiently educated and the law (constitution) enforced for any such guarantee to be worth the paper it's written on. To be clear, Government endorsed to me means explicitly endorsed in the constitution. What is happening now is the government pseudo endorsing the religion by passing laws friendly to the religion, bypassing the constitution. That's what happens when you have a weak judicial system. Kind of what is happening in the US now with the Supreme Court. The article was meant to show the dangers to minority groups. In Nigeria though the Christian "minority" group is much much larger and it's "regions" account for greater economic development. budaatum: They don't need us to trust them. By golly, some here don't trust the elections in US, but Biden still gets 4 years in a White House. This is a false equivalency. The trust in the US system isn't because the Government says to Trust it. It is the system of checks and balances from hand recounts, to chain of custody of the ballots to an independent judiciary that lends it Trust. Just because nuts decided it was rigged doesn't make it so. On the other hand, the Nigerian election seemed to be rigged. I heard too many of my friends with Igbo names who tried multiple times and couldn't get their voting cards in Lagos. The day of I saw ballots on the floor in polling stations. Police officers in a government police vehicle obstructing and even destroying ballots. If that did in fact happen, did any of those officers face justice? In the US that alone would be enough for the judiciary to declare a new election at a minimum in those polling places and a wider investigation as to who ordered it and far how up it went. How can you have structures of Government power cheating and people claiming the election was fair? Do you think it was fair? budaatum: P.s. You said "argue" in a previous, and it disturbed me. I prefer "discuss", since I'm merely stating a view and an opinion instead of what could be called fact, which I do not have. This is what I mean by "argument" or "what are you trying to argue". Also I'm CompE so the term argument in discission is more benign to me. a reason or set of reasons given with the aim of persuading others that an action or idea is right or wrong. "there is a strong argument for submitting a formal appeal" |
Foreign Affairs › Re: American Politics Thread: 2026 Midterm Elections Live! by IjeBos(m): 3:49am On Mar 04, 2023 |
budaatum: Yes you can have a country "when the government endorses religious law". India springs to mind with its endorsed Hinduism, and with a tiny stretch of the imagination, so does China, though you'd need to stretch as far as considering Communism as a sort of religion.
Still, you've hit the head of the nail with your "basic tenet of US law", though its not as basic as you claim. Laws are made by people, and such laws as freedom of religion require a sort of enlightenment that we Nigerians just have not yet achieved, which is why we do not have such laws. We'd have them when we educate ourselves.
Nigerians seem to not have voted predominantly along religious lines nor tribe, or Tinubu would not have won in states that have few Muslims, and Obi would have won all states with Christian majorities.
That said, I'm waiting for a detailed breakdown of votes. It will show how cute I'm being. Personally, personal presumed gain is what I think swayed this election. As much as I'd have preferred Obi, he just hadn't done the groundwork that would have given him the win. If he'd been the PDP candidate, he'd have had a much better chance. I don't believe India's government endorses Hinduism. I think their constitution guarantees religious independence. In fact those walls are breaking down and it's causing issues for the religious minority groups. https://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2022/05/narendra-modi-india-religion-hindu-nationalism/630169/I agree about the education, but you are talking about years and decades away. And honestly, some religious groups purposefully don't value Education, to keep people in line. I wouldn't trust any of the "election" results coming out of the government. |

budaatum: Here's a recent post. Don't know how valid it is, but if true, those elders must have forgotten the tribe they are from. I'm not sure the point you are making. Are you arguing that tribalism and religious differences aren't part in parcel of our problems? And as to those elders.. their words are meaningless to me. They are also part of a broken system always reacting based on where they can get there palms greased. |

budaatum: A selective reading of the election results might make one conclude what you have. Fact is, no candidate got only votes from their tribe, which kind of disproves your point, I'd think. You're being cute by half here. Large swarths of the country voted for their "tribe" or religion electing back to power a party who has basially decimated the country. budaatum: Fact is, USA was "an invention of colonials" with people from diverse nationalities, and it seems to be doing pretty well, so that's not the reason Nigeria is not doing so well. Again, outside of the slaves and the Native Americans whom were basically wiped out, everyone who came here chose to for whatever reason. So, they had a a believe that they would assimilate. Nigeria is a totally different situations where colonials carved up a land filled with indigenous people and at times splitting tribes in order to create a country. A good counter example would be the Native Americans who have reservations where they continue their own culture. budaatum: If we mended our mentality, I believe we'd do well too. I'm not sure that is enough. A basic tenet of US law is freedom of religion. You can't have a cohesive country when the government endorses religious law (sharia). |

"Distinct tribes", distinct nationalities, same difference as far as they sometimes see themselves. Even today you'd see some distinctify themselves when it suits them. Self selecting - post slavery obviously. Really? Why would you even go there? My argument isn't to as what I believe, it's as to what I think Nigerians believe. And I think that point was made during this "election". |

budaatum: You must be describing USA, though I bet you wouldn't call those who migrated from all over Europe and the rest of the world, "distinct tribes", I bet. US is distinct. It's a self selecting group of people who decided to leave their own "tribes" and emigrate to somewhere else. And I used distinct tribes because that's how Nigerians see themselves. I get it, people have generational ancestorial land in Nigeria. |

One thing Nigerians have never understood is that Nationality doesn't have to be tribalistic. Well some Nigerians and not all. Just look at the republiqans like mtg, tucker, and co pushing White supremacy talking points and you can parallel them to some set of Nigerians that won't share ideals with someone not of their tribe. Just like some republiqans don't understand what a Nation is, same way some Nigerians will think and Nigeria will ever remain this way. The problem is Nigeria was an invention of colonials. Too many distinct tribes and differing religions. Not sure it's governable esp. when people are comfortable living in as is. I think it's very peculiar that people are so tribalistic when one of their main cities is literally named after a foreign conqueror. |
