My answer is: Religious hypocrites whose only concerns are why should Nigeria join OIC, but never thought about the benefits of OIC economically.

Regardless of the benefits i don't support the Nigerian government joining any religious body (islamic, christain or traditional). Religion should continue to be a personal thing.

Considering how difficult it is to get reliable figures from Nigeria i don't know where they got this from. Besides i thought no one fell for Nigerian 419 scams anymore.

If you are based in Nigeria, you cannot easily earn money (with a merchant account) or spend it (with a legally owned credit card) online without the issue of "scam"coming up. Paypal, the most popular and conveninent payments processor, will simply c[b]lose your account and sieze your funds[/b] when they discover that you are a Nigerian. When you mention that you're a Nigerian on forums or chat rooms, the issue of 'Nigerian' scams will be raised. For each item you try to buy online, a scam alert is triggered.

Paypal is extremely sensitive about the potential for fraud especially since they got burnt awhile ago in some money laundering scandal in the states. If you can get a reliable and trusted ally outside the country to handle payments for you through worldpay or an escrow service, that might be a better option for now.

The truth is that most scammers do what they do for reasons best known to them. Some do it in order to help their family or reduce the burden on their parents by catering for themselves. I know so many guys who sponsor themselves and their sibblings in school through scamming.

You might say that it is not an excuse; yes, I agree. But then, looking at the economy of Nigeria today, where a BSc or even an MSc degree holder will have to sweat under the anger of the sun, looking for job, all to no avail. (Very few get lucky these days); I really won't blame people engaging in internet frauds. At least, it is better than going to innocent people's houses and killing them in cold blood just to get their money for them to survive (robbery).

For now, I really don't think there's anyway internet scams can be stopped in Nigeria because even the law enforcing agencies themselves are worse than scammers, INCLUDING THE EFCC.

nferyn I disagree, you can cure malaria but there is no vaccine to prevent it or stop it from reoccurring if you're exposed to it again. Malaria "can't be contained to a certain degree" as you either have the parasites in your body or you don't (which is the case when you are treated for it i.e cured) .

A prototype of a cheap and robust laptop for pupils has been welcomed as an "expression of global solidarity" by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.

The unemployment situation in the country is unacceptable and is the reason behind the constant social upheavals in the country. The devil they say, finds work for idle hands.

I personally feel that its in everyone's interest that the employment situation improves, lets face it, its no use complaining that the government is bad etc. I've had numerous discussions with a lot of people about this and one of the things people like myself are trying to do is look at ways in which we can provide low cost loans and financial incentives to unemployed graduates to make them self employed.

The biggest obstacle to a scheme like this is the rampant 'fraud' in the country. It'll be great to hear suggestions as to ways in which a scheme like this can be operated in Nigeria.

In the mean time i believe there are so many opportunities in that country, once you get out of the mindset of 'just opening a shop and selling things'. People need to be innovative, like the Americans will say 'if life hands you lemon make lemonade'.  People need to think 'outside the box'

Here are some of the projects i can think off the top of my head.


- building a solar powered water pump for use in rural areas or when there's a power failure.

- Solar powered streetlights (i've already seen this at the sydney olympic village in Australia, you'll be surprised how easy it is to build with instructions from the internet)

- Hybrid powered generators using solar and battery power


starting up things like

- Sports schools/evening clubs that teach kids to play football, swim etc

- Computer training schools/clubs that specialises in teaching software (e.g Java, Oracle, ASP, Cold fusion, JSP) , Digital photography/video editing  etc

- Language schools teaching foreign languages like french and chinese (yes china is going to be the next superpower so we better equip ourselves)

I know people who have started refuse collection companies, how about starting up a drainage clearing company that helps in clearing blocked drainage in Lagos (especially in places like VI and Ikoyi)

- Setting up Temporary work agencies that provides temporary staff to small companies


if you have some good web and programming skills you could think of starting the following (has to be free initially to get the traffic and then start charging later). It could also be built as a standalone application in java for example and sold to companies like MTN and Globacom to put on 3G phones


- a project to build a comprehensive phone directory of all Nigerian phone numbers (i did this some years ago but couldn't keep up with the recent explosion of phones in the country)

- a project to build an online map of major nigerian cities (especially Lagos and Abuja)

- infact any project that can provide adequate information about anything in Nigeria (the country gets so much bad press that a lot of international agencies avoid the place and as a result have outdated info on the country)

Because of  the general attitude of Nigerians, initially you may have to provide the service for free or give the product away just to convince people its genuine.

wow thanks thats a bit harsh but you do have a point.  I'm not trying to come across as some 'know it all' and anything i say here is from my own personal experience. I'm not giving anyone advise here, my previous post did not refer to anybody.
My point was that being shy should not be seen as a disability as anything that was 'learned' can be 'unlearned'. It is hard work but it can be done

I used to be extremely shy as a teenager and i did not have a lot of friends. I used to compare myself to other kids and of course that made me feel worse about myself. And then as i got older i realised why i was 'shy'. I was shy because i felt i was different from everyone else but the thing is we're all the same.

What i mentioned in my previous post were the ways i overcame my own shyness by doing things i was afraid of doing, like learning to swim, salsa dancing, learning a foreign language, giving a speech in front of a large audience, kick boxing etc.
I learnt that by doing the things i was scared of I expanded my 'comfort zone' and became more self assured. I can tell you today that i am no longer a shy person 

As regards to qualifications, i studied sociology and psychology many moons ago and have attended many Self motivational seminars organised by ISA - Institute for Self Actualisation http://www.isaexperience.com/

This is why we keep having coups in Africa, sit tight politicians who don't know when to leave.

I think our politicians for the first time in the political history of Nigeria have found themselves in an unusual situation. Having to give up political power voluntarily.
Think about it we've never got this far before, in most cases the army will have ended the whole thing after the second 'election' like they did in 1966 and 1983.

So even though we had this same 2 term rule in the 79 constitution and the others drafted after, it was never put to the test because no one expected any civilian government to last past its first term. Now that OBJ seems to have broken that jinx (fingers crossed ) it seems our politicans are now getting too comfortable..

Anyway sha if OBJ decides to go ahead with a third term, my advise to him is to make sure he sleeps with a gun under his pillow, he should also refrain from drinking tea at Aso rock and ensure he has nothing to do with indian prostitutes

i agree with king's comment. i also feel seun's emotions. but the truth about shy people is that no matter how hard they try to get out of the attitude, it always elopes someday. its really like a disability but it can be masked.

Been shy is not a disability, its a behaviour which can be changed, we're all born with a clean slate and we pick up different types of behaviour based on our experiences and exposure.
There's nothing wrong in been shy per se, it only becomes a problem when it interferes or stops you from living a normal happy life or achieving your goals in life. There are a lot of succesful people who were shy and awkward growing up (examples: Bill Gates, Michael Jackson)

The trick to overcoming shyness is to stop the self criticism, over analysis and don't be too hard on yourself. Accept yourself for who you are and learn to step out of your comfort zone (by taking up new hobbies, learning new skills and doing the things you are normally scared of doing). With time you'll become more self assured and confident of who you are.

Sure, but the initial transfer was probably through direct blood contact. Another interesting note is that the strain of HIV that is prevalent in Africa is different from the one that is dominant in America and Europe. It is not unlikely that the in ital infection happened independently

they are ignorant, I am aware that one of the questions they ask when you want to donate blood or if you visit an STD clinic for a test is 'Have you recently slept with/had unprotected sex with someone who has recently arrived from west africa or have you recently travelled there etc.
An ex girlfriend of mine who is Indian called me up a while ago as she wanted to donate blood and she mentioned that she used to go out with an 'African'. They were asking her all these questions, you can't imagine how pissed off i was been asked if i had unprotected sex the last time i visited Nigeria...

China and India currently have a high number of cases and no one is picking on their citizens.

Anyway enough of my rant, I just hope that Africans can wake up to the reality of what this disease is and ensure that they do not become infected through our 'usual' sexual practices.

nferyn thanks you make some valid points. The reason why i said we should be wary of accepting the western media version of events is that no one truly knows how this virus started infecting people. the virus must have been lying dormant somewhere before someone went to disturb it.
The whole theory about people eating monkey meat in congo and thats how it started is BS. These people don dey eat this meat for hundred of years and nothing happened to them. For all we know the virus could have come from outer space may be from a meteorite that crashed or something (joking  )

The western media is portraying this disease as an African disease simply because Africa has the highest number of people infected, period. In the UK as far as there are concerned if you recently arrived from west Africa then you must have the HIV virus unless a test shows otherwise.

If it originated in the congo basin in Africa, how come the first cases were identified in San francisco in the early 80s. HIV/AIDs was first identified within the Gay community in San Francisco.

The jury is still out as to where the virus came from, if it came from the congo then some gay guy from california must have 'shagged' a monkey then

To be honest not much as it is currently been spread by migratory birds. From the initial outbreak in Asia it has now reached Europe and it should soon get to Africa.

At the moment the bird flu virus can only be transmitted from birds to human, however there has been isolated cases of it been transmitted from person to person. The main concern at the moment is that the virus may mutate into a more deadly type that transmits from human to human. A similar outbreak in 1918 killed millions of people.

Nobody said women should spend money on men, what i said was that if a man takes a woman out on a date the woman should at least make an attempt to pay, the man should refuse of course   but he'll respect her for it.

newbie here  , hate is a bit of a strong word for me, i prefer 'dislike'. 

The following are the things i dislike:

Women who are rude and frown anytime a man walks up to them (please Ladies not everyman who comes up to you wants to 'toast' you and even if i did, not with that frown on your face and the rude attitude, it will cost you nothing to be polite)

Women who expect men to worship the ground they walk on (you maybe daddy's princess at home but you're now a grown up woman behave like one)

Women who are insecure and 'over demanding' (just because we are a couple doesn't mean we have to be together ALL THE TIME)

Women who are inconsiderate and expects the man to cater to their every need (i'm looking for a partner who can 'add' value to my life not someone who 'subtracts' and thinks i'm an ATM machine)

Women who slander their man to others, if you don't like the way he behaves then don't stay in a relationship with him.

Women who can't communicate what they want, (men are not mind readers) if you want something ask for it

Women who expect guys to always pick up the tab everytime they go out (i don't mind paying but please make an attempt once in a while)

Women who just lie there like a 'log of wood' without providing 'feedback' (guys i'm sure u know what i mean )

Women who play 'too hard to get' and try to play mind games
