anton: See? Dat's wut i be talkin bout! Thanks, Black Man. I am about to see if i can get them on the interlibrary loan right now!

Thanks again and let's keep this thread alive. Do the Yorubas in Nigeria deal with the Yorubas in the surrounding areas econimically or politically?

Has Nigeria benefitted in any way from the history and power of IFA?
Sorry for missing the questions in your earlier post.

The Yorubas deal with the other yorubas in the surrounding areas. The language still provides a common link which the 'artificial' border can not break.
Here's an interesting article on the yorubas in the republic of benin
http://www.beninensis.net/benin_anango.htm

Nigeria as a whole has not benefitted from Ifa or any other traditional practices for that matter. Its unlikely to happen, the other major ethnic groups in Nigeria were kingdoms in their own right with a rich cultural history just like the Yorubas. Its like asking the French to adopt English traditions in the EU.

Does anybody here listen to the Yoruba Drumming Station on Live365. That music is so freakin kewl... cool

That is so Dread.
what's the name of the station ? there're actually a few on there

If you have the opportunity, go see some of the major 'traditional' cuban performers like Omar Sosa http://www.afrocubaweb.com/omarsosa.htm
Its amazing hearing the Yoruba language spoken in Cuba. I was lucky enough to see Omar Sosa and his group perform in the UK and we had tears in our eyes when they performed some yoruba songs and dances. It was a bit hard to understand because they've lost the tonation but you can still recognise the language even with the elements of spanish thrown in.

Quite an interesting interview.
I think the response of Atiku's media assistant in thisday reveals the typical arrogant attitude of Nigerian politicians.
"The V.P doesn't belong to a culture in which children trade words will elders. Young men who attack men old enough to be their father are dismissed as rude and uncultured"
http://www.thisdayonline.com/nview.php?id=37726

Rather than rebutting the allegations of corruption and greed against his boss, he turns around to attack the 'messenger'

In the end it left me sad and depressed about the future of the country sad

I was referring to the links u post. At least, they do not originate from you.
goodguy, honestly i'm confused huh

When you provide Links you're indicating to the reader to visit the sites for more information on the subject. The links are not the source of the information but the means to get to the information (just like providing a list of books for someone interested in a certain subject)

When you use information from another site you provide a Link to it, this allows the reader to visit the site to verify the source of the information or read more about the subject.

Urban Myths (definition from dictionary.com)
a folkloric and often sensational tale about modern life that is repeated in the media and by other means, making it more believable to some; also called urban legend

urban Myths
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urban_legend

Christian Urban Legends are stories of events with a Christian theme that never happened. They are generally created by a Christian individual or group as a fictional account because they give concrete support to their beliefs.
It is important to realize that most Christians reject the validity of these stories. They probably look upon them with amusement.

http://www.religioustolerance.org/chr_cul.htm

nicetohave:
On the issue of the references, just because someone have access to the internet, like you and me, does not make his works true or acceptable........i repeat, every word that i write here now has a link for reference, does that make me an authority? NO! well the authority of what i write however is God who put his words with every child of his, ijebuman, nferyn who/what is the authority behind your arguments?
Just because something supports your belief system doesn't make it true. If a preacher told you 1 + 1 = 3, would you believe him because 'God who put his words with every child of his'

If i told you a plane crash happened, your first comment will be to ask for the source of the news. I could equally say that the news is from 'God who put his words with every child of his'
People quote the bible here all the time, who wrote the bible? and where is the evidence that proves it was inspired from God?
I can equally say just because some people have access to paper and a printing press does not make their works true and acceptable (or inspired from God)

I don't know if John Lennon et al did say something bad about God and Jesus and that they died as a result, so I'm not going to butt in and say that they did and God punished them. But even if they did, why would God, in a moment of fury, kill them off, just to prove himself? That god sounds more like a five year old kid to me. There're many other people who have made worse statements and have lived to tell the tale. There're many christians who join cults and do despicable things behind the veils of "Jesus Garments." When it is time to die, you die. You get punished in the afterlife if you are an unrepentant sinner or a bad person. This is what we believe.

I'm not saying I know God, but I believe we should not praise the power of God over the tragic deaths of people, no matter what we believe. You also forget that Titanic also inhabited peaceful, God-loving people who died in it, or that john lennon had a wife and friends who would miss him, or that marilyn monroe was suffering bouts of depression that might have warranted what she said (if that was true). So, just don't jump into conclusions. You're giving others a reason to belittle you.

Yes, I know that descecrating holy territories aren't exactly nice, be it in the religious or social sense. (Go on national television and talk loosely about black activists, then see the reaction). But guys, come on! It doesn't really help. We should not rejoice over things like this, and that is even if they are true.

As for those who laugh at us, please know that what you consider as laughable and superstitious are what we hold dear and love. Urban beliefs are laughable but the root thoughts of those, especially as it concerns belief, are not. Sometimes the religious need to be respected for what they believe in as you do. You would not take it if we laugh at your beliefs, so don't laugh at us. It's not nice.
Nnenna1 thanks for your post, you're a breath of fresh air on this forum. smiley

JOHN LENNON

Some years before during his interview with an American Magazine, he said:
"Christianity will end, it will disappear. I do not have to argue about that. I am certain. Jesus was ok, but his subjects were too simple, Today we are more famous than Him" (1966)".
Lennon, after saying that the Beatles were more famous than Jesus Christ, was shot six times.
