Let look at it this way: in 1920,
1- How many household/communities had radiogram talkless of a car. These are exclusively for rich and educated families.
2- majority of few cars then were owned by colonians masters and missioneries. so it is very easy to know who owns a car and location of the car. cars a found in major cities.
3- The few roads that were available then were link roads to major cities. the possibility that someone in one remote location had or drove a car is ZERO. A car is not a showoff then.

firsty, note that breeders are also in business to make profit. they'll do whatever is necessary for max profit.
Two- age, weight and specie of parent stock is also key.
Do you know that juveniles are also sorted into shooters, normal growths and runts? if care is not taken, it's possible to buy runts from a reputable breeders.
It is adviceable to stock with matured juveniles which is more expensive. really, most breeders sell post-fingerlings as juveniles. to be on safe side, smart farmers usually raise their fish in fish tanks and sort to identify runts before transfering then into main ponds. No matter what you feed runts, you cant get desired result.

akonucheinfo: @ ikooko, in 1 of ur post u said fish respond well to feeding in the night as they do in day time. Am a little bit uncertain here, i want to change from a local feed to foreign feed,as @jay advised.but, i want to limit the feeding to twice dairly to minimize my cost. Will it be ok if i feed my fish 2 times a day? And will they respond the way i want? If am to feed my fish only 2 times a day, when is the perfect time to feed them in a day? Morning & night or noon and night? Pls advise....@jay ur comment on this will be highly welcomed too.tnx

i feed my fish at nights and their response is superb. even though temperature is cold at night but pound water is warm. This is explained by land and sea breeze. Am able to feed at night because my farm is my house.
The number of times and quality of feed will determine the result u'll get. Did you even bother about the source of your fish? if every other input is right but wrong source, u'll get bad result.

It is possible that the money is his gratuity or severance package which the wife have little information. Though I found it hard to belief a banker can save that much even the conservatives among them. The case is even worst among the top hirachy with heavy salaries. They rather spend it on make belief lifestyles.

As if 6m was some giant lottery win that made you immune from getting broke again. I am simply inferring that even with 6m in the bank if you want to work for a company,nothing stops you and besides,one small business mistake, 6m can very easily be blown. with fish tanks and a borehole, u can do your fish farm right in your sitting room but it better to have expansion focus. look for an acre not far from lagos and start up so that you can go and come back home everyday but you'll have to attend a traning on livestock farming before you start. I did mine at federal college of agric, moore planation ibadan. cheap and interesting. You wount need more than 2m wih land cost to start off.

akonucheinfo: Please i want some one to help here. am confused, i started fish biz just this january 2012, through a friend who is into it as well. My problem is water, and feeding frequent without seeing the growth.

As i speak, i have roughly spent 500k, and they are in the 4th month, yet i hardly see 1kg. am not impressed with the growth considering how much i have put into it. I have been using a local feed formulation. dont know if thats where the problem is. but in my fomulation i have more of FISH MEAL, SOYA MEAL, GNS, AND INDOMIE. it seem i will paste my formulation here when next i come. pls advise. i need them to be atleast 1kg in the 4th month or 5th month at most. i need all the help i can get. tnx all

if you read my previous post, i emphasised that water is key in aqualculture. for fish to convert foods the water level must be 4ft but if you operate earthy pond and your fish are within 2months, 3ft water levell is still ok.
The danger in local feed is it sinks and it difficult to know if your fish are feeding or you're just wasting the feeds. patience is needed once you change to local feeds; you must adopt spot feeding with 2-3 pieces of feeds at a time - boring and time consuming you say but u'll get result. when wte level drops, it is adviceable to feed them less frequently to avoid poluting your pond. meanwhile bigger fish feed under water unlike smaller ones that love to play at surface, nevertheless you'll need to sort and do weight sampling. just yesteday my friend had to sell off 2months old fishes due to lack of water.
If ure having water issues at 4months, sell off to avoid disease oubreak and minimise your loss.

@poster i dont know the type of person your husband is or number of years in banking but i found it hard to belief a banker can save that much nowadays. it could be gratuity or severance package. I said this because it will go a long way to know what advice to give. bankers are generally flamboyant and wasteful with long debt list.
Dont be suprised if your husband tell you he want to travel out of this contry just ensure you dont allow him to do that. It obvious he has no plan-B. If care is not taken, he will finish that money before he start thinking.
If you can get him to talk, i'll advice you convince him to go into farming (fish, poultry etc), it very simple and intersting besides he can combine it with other stuffs.
I disagree with people saying he need time to relax. To be honest with you, i left banking job in january and i decided not to work for people again. I scanned my enviroment for possibilities with minimum capital but stable market and i opted for farming. next thing i did was attend a course on livestock production in february. I dug ponds in march and i stocked with juveniles in april, in few months time i will harvest. There is room for expansion depending on efforts and capital injection.
with all this, i have too much time to relax and play around.

Hello @ poster, i commend your efforts so far i'll love to add my voice to this thread for the benefit of all especially those interested in fish farming for quick profit.
two most important things required for sucessful fish farming are: stable source of water supply and your total commitment, as modern research as shown wide deviation from what fish farming used to be in the past.
If ure interested in any other aquaculture other than earthy ponds you must be certain to replace your water every other day, water level must be 4ft for easy food conversion. it means that if you have a 10*10 concrete or plastic tank, u'll need about 20000lts of water or more every 2days. If earthy pounds, considerarion must be given to drain pipes, polluttion and water replenishment. nature of soil, pond pollution and diseace outbreak determine whether pond water will be changed or not.
On feeding, technology has also shown that feeding pattern determines output reason why some farmers can bost of 1kg-2kg within 3months, needless to say their food connsumption is directly proportional to their sizes which varies from week to week. Also feeding pattern is very important especially when u change from floating to sinking feeds, if care is not taken you may just be wasting your feeds thinking ure feeding your fishes.
There is no hard and fast rule as to the best time for feeding. personal experience has shown that fish responds to feeding at nights as much as they do during the day, but how many fish farmers can do that except few backyard farmers like me.
Lastly the majority size of your fish at crop determine the price/kg. if 70% of your fish is 0.8kg upwards, ure likely to get btw 400 & 500/kg but if 70% are arround 0.7kg your maket price should be arround 300-400/kg
