@ alj harem,
I think Gombe, Bauchi and Jos should be ranked higher than Jigawa or Taraba in terms of neatness and city arrangement; take away the current situation in Maiduguri, the city is cool and natural but not dirty

Our northern friends should say more about their cities.

With rail transport, it is not an impossible thing but SW has to be really focused on development to really achieve such,

I always thought making some parts of Ogun state a well planned  suburb to Lagos will be very very good for Lagos,
that former governor of Ogun state- Gbenga Daniel mentioned something like that during his first term but i guess he didn't have muscle big enough to handle such transformation. Ironically, large number of lagosian lives in lagos suburb.
Ibikunle Amosu should look into that direction.

GEJ should just repair Lagos-Ibadan, Ibadan-Ilorin, Ilorin-Kaduna, Shagamu-Ore, and Benin to other eastern part of the country. The rail project is a mirage.

Christianity EtcRe: Nigerian Christians Open Hostility Against Islam by ikooko(m): 12:33pm On Jul 06, 2011
Personally I do not see the justification for the introduction of Islamic banking into this country in the present situation, my reasons are as follows:
1.) Prior to now, many commercial banks offers Islamic banking products for customers that are interested.
2) Our banking industry is undergoing redress as a result of global meltdown.
3) The activities of boko haram is still unresolved.
4) CBN governor attitude on the issue seems unprofessional.
5) The number of banks at present is okay to cater for the stage of our economic development if well managed.
6) Religion issues is highly sensitive matter in Nigeria, while mix it with business/banking.
7) British and American banks that introduce Islamic banking did so as a market strategy to attract fund from oil rich Islamic nation.
cool Funding of such bank will be seen as FG promoting Islam over other religion no matter the argument.

But taken a critical look at CBN governor, he seems more of a Islamic radical than professional banker, and his agenda is to satisfy his godfathers, which he is pursuing rigorously. Islamic banking is one of it in my opinion.
Interestingly, those banks Sanusi termed ''FAILLED BANKS'' would soon proved him wrong when the half year financial reports are released. I wish bankers on NL can fault my opinion on failed banks based on current realities in our banking industry.

PoliticsRe: Lagos Rains: Women Protest Flooding In Lekki Area by ikooko(m): 10:22am On Jul 06, 2011
I think we would get a clearer picture of flooding in Lagos state if we consider the natural and human factors in the state.
The human factors are as a result of poor wastewater disposal and other sanitation practices (e.g. blocked drains by refuse, silt, sludge, etc). Note also the implication of illegal buildings on water natural channels.
The natural factors include rainfall, flat topography and poor infiltration, the negative effects of which can be reduced but not eliminated by appropriate planning, design , operation and maintenance of the drainage facilities.
www.ucd.ie/dipcon/docs/theme14/theme14_32.PDF
We may also need to think of the implication of global climatic changes on Lagos oceans and the resultant effect in Lagos metropolis especially during raining season.

am sure Lagos government is doing the necessary to alleviate such challenges but lagosians should live up to expectation to correct human factors affecting the state.

1) Has anyone ever heard of this saying ''Ibadan lo'mo o'ko mo layipo'' well the saying originated from an historical place located in the heart of Ibadan, but not known to many people even though they are familiar with the saying.

The place is located at Beere after Mapo Hill, as if you are going to Galaxy TV, it's on your right, an unpopular ancient tower, inside a primary school.
The tower is constructed in such a way that it has 2 entrance doors at the bottom and 2 spiral staircase that lead to the top.  The attraction is that, if two people enters the two doors, they will not meet until they get to the top, but they will be seeing and hearing each other. Anyone in ibadan can cross check the location and revert.

2) Yankari Game reserve is another wonderful place for people around  Bauchi state.
3) Dadin Kowa Dam in Gombe state is a place to visit.
Please come to Gombe state and I will show you arround.

PoliticsRe: Why Exactly Is Allison Madueke Being Haunted? by ikooko(m): 3:32pm On Jun 29, 2011
emmaco24:
Commentary: Ten Questions Senators Should Ask Deziani Allison-Madueke

Recently, the media has championed calls and provided evidence why the grumpy former Petroleum Resources Minister, Diezani Allison-Madueke should not be returned to the cabinet, let alone to the Oil ministry portfolio. We thought media had made the point loud enough to invite President Goodluck Jonathan to take a hard and unsentimental look at Allison-Madueke’s record as Oil Minister. On each occasion, we promised ourselves that I won't write any more on the woman.

But, like a bad headache, Allison-Madueke has refused to go away. Against all the odds, she made the final list and it is now left to the Senate to save Nigerians from what has become a national embarrassment; the President having failed in his duty.

The President’s decision to return Allison-Madueke to the cabinet, unpopular as it is, points to a failure of leadership arising from poor judgment. We are therefore demanding that the Senators add the following questions to their list of questions for Allison-Madueke when she comes up for screening:

1-Lawmakers should ask Allison-Madueke about the so-called “Strategic Alliance Agreements” signed by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and the Nigerian Petroleum Development Corporation (NPDC) and Septa Energy Nigeria Ltd discreetly assigning oil blocks without an open and competitive bidding process in violation of the 2007 Public Procurement Act and the Nigeria Oil and Gas Industry Content Development Act 2010. A Lagos-based lawyer, Bartholomew Aguegbodo, on June 10, 2011, asked a Federal High Court in Lagos to declare these agreements as illegal, null and void. He joined Allison-Madueke, the NNPC and the NPDC, Septa Energy, and the Attorney General of the Federation as first to fifth respondents respectively.

2-Allison-Madueke should tell lawmakers why she thinks her refusal to sign up for mandatory national service with the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) after she graduated from Howard University in 1987 should not be seriously reprimanded. According to Section 13 of the NYSC decree, Allison-Madueke committed a criminal act. “(A person) who refuses to make himself available for service in the service corps continuously for the period specified in subsection (2) of this section, is guilty of an offence and liable on conviction to a fine of N2,OOO or to imprisonment for a term of 12 months or to both,” the Act states.

3-Lawmakers should also ask Allison-Madueke whether she has reimbursed the $2 million she spent on a fashion show, organized by diamond designer Chris Aire, to promote his brand in the United States. The high profile event, tagged: “Chris Aire - ‘Hollywood Glamour Collection’2010 Nigeria’s Pride- Gold and Gemstones was packaged as a kind of fair to create awareness for the untapped gold and gemstone resources in Nigeria. CBN boss Lamido Sanusi coaxed four Nigerian banks --Diamond, First, Guaranty Trust and First City Monument Bank to cough out the dough. The lavish event held on April 07, 2010 at the prestigious Beverly Hills Hotel on Sunset Boulevard in Beverly Hills, California.

4-Allison-Madueke should tell lawmakers why she violated the law by awarding licenses to lift Nigerian crude oil to “briefcase companies” including two companies incorporated by Chris Aire. On July 9, 2010, Mr. Aire incorporated Siseno Oil Nigeria Ltd, and 12 days later (July 21, 2010), Mr. Aire, through his agents, incorporated another firm, Caligeria Oil Ltd, for the purpose of conducting petroleum products sales and distribution. One month later, Allison-Madueke discretionally awarded crude oil lifting contracts to the two firms, with neither fixed addresses nor personnel, in violation of NNPC guidelines for lifting of Nigerian crude. With the arbitrary allocations to his no-address companies, Mr. Aire and his associates earned about $11 million a year in profit for doing virtually nothing. The Presidency plans an investigation after major stakeholders protested against the overwhelming presence of shadowy companies without requisite industry experience and stipulated financial power, and who have failed to fulfil stipulated corporate responsibilities to the host communities, in violation of the guidelines signed by Allison-Madueke herself.

5-Lawmakers should ask Allison-Madueke about the elaborate bribery scam at the Petroleum Product Pricing and Regulatory Agency (PPPRA), where oil marketers were compelled to pay bribes in US dollars in exchange for obtaining authorization to import gasoline. The oil marketers were instructed by PPPRA to call a mobile telephone number and pay a bribe of $8 per metric ton of petroleum allocated to them, such that a firm with a 100,000 metric tons allocation would be required to pay a bribe of $800,000 in cash.

6-Allison-Madueke should be asked to explain why despite all her much-vaunted “reforms” to engender transparency in the sector, the 2011 report by the anti-corruption watch group Transparency International titled: “Promoting Revenue Transparency”, the NNPC is one of the eight worst performing companies worldwide, scoring zero for poor organizational disclosure.

7-Senators should seize the occasion to get Allison-Madueke answer questions relating to their inconclusive investigation by the Senate Committee on Petroleum (upstream) into three (3) oil blocks – OML 4, 30 and 41, which she discreetly and illegally assigned exploration rights to Septa Energy Nigeria Ltd. The federal government maintained a 55% stake in the blocks representing billions of naira. The Senate committee was unable to conclude its investigations because Allison-Madueke arrogantly refused to appear before the committee to answer questions even though she was invited several times. She can run, but she can no longer hide.

8-Lawmakers should also ask Allison-Madueke the inauspicious circumstances that led to her violating a court order to protect the interests of her husband’s company, and why she thinks this blatant conflict of interest should not be seriously reprimanded. She muzzled the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) into not complying with the court-directive to put a lien on all financial operations of Eremor Offshore oil field operated by Excel, chaired by her husband Retired Rear Admiral Allison Madueke. Excel had failed to honor an agreement with Alphin Fleury and Partners, a private company in Switzerland hired by the London office of the NNPC to seek financing for several Nigerian companies that are operating marginal oil fields. Excel breached the contract and when the court ordered a lien to be place on their assets, Allison-Madueke used her position as Minister to contravene and discard the court order.

9-Allison-Madueke should be asked to explain her uppity nature and disdain for the rule of law, which has led to arbitrariness and chaos in the sector. She should explain her decision ordering the NNPC to exercise its right of first refusal to prevent companies that bought oil acreages from RoyalDutchShell disinvestment sell-off of its blocks from operating the blocks. This has triggered a planned massive disinvestment by the oil majors from the Nigerian oil sector

10-Finally, lawmakers should ask Allison-Madueke this simple question: throughout her tenure as Minister, especially as Oil Minister, what mistakes have she made; what lessons have she learnt from those mistakes and if given another opportunity to head the Oil Ministry, what are some of the things she would do differently?

It is beyond human comprehension that President Jonathan can still appoint Allison-Madueke to his cabinet. What professional or ideological imperatives besides Ijaw solidarity that informed the President’s decision stretches credulity. What her re-appointment demonstrates is a predilection towards profligacy, and a questionable emphasis on reward rather than service: I consider the outrageous decision to return Allison-Madueke rather scandalous. The basic principle here is that public service ought to be about sacrifice and dedication. Those who have been elected or appointed to serve Nigeria in one capacity or the other should see their elevation as a mark of honor and as an opportunity to contribute to the making of Nigeria, its progress and development. Allison-Madueke is just unfit to hold public office and the Senate should reject her nomination outright!

First of all, don't call me youngman as you don't know me from adam.

Secondly, I didn't insult him but said it like it really is. Whilst Diya was Abacha's second-in-command, he committed numerous atrocities against his own yoruba people. where i come from, that's an omo-ale.
And oh btw, am from the same area (Odogbolu) as him.

And lastly, maybe you can set the ball rolling by highlighting what contributions your own "righteous" fada made during that dark time in yoruba history. Just get off my back, okay. Don't have time for mo.rons like your type.
Agbaya, buruku! Geez.
1) I called you a ''young man'' because your comment suggests it. besides, I doubt if we have anyone as old as 70 yrs in NL. It will really be interesting to celebrate and learn from them if they exist on NL.
2) Yorubas are refined people, we don't refer to elders in derogatory manners no matter the circumstances; and I know that Yoruba have room for constructive criticism in case of conflict of interest/opinion, that is what make us unique among other tribes.
3) I mention your fada, just to caution you. It was actually a statement of request not an insult (ref - alexola20). I don't know Diya from nowhere if you must know.
But please ponder on this, it is important: ''Ohun to agba rii l'ori ijoko, b'omode gun igi iroko ko le ri''. what an elder sees while sitting, a child cant see even if he climbs iroko tree.

How could you suggest a thing like this? Did Awolowo partner with FG when he introduced free education in the west?
Did Rochas Okorocha partenr with FG to declare free education in his state? If you must know, Rochas has a free education program in Kano and other major northern states.

CultureRe: Considering A Yoruba Tattoo: Ideas? by ikooko(m): 5:34pm On Jun 20, 2011
Firstly, I like to commend the interest shown by bayosgirl in Yoruba's culture, whatever motive is her personal issue.
Secondly, some contributors are indirectly mixing Yoruba culture with foreign culture. I may be new to NL but my culture is not alien to me as a Yorubaman with experience in traditional practices if you know what i mean.

For the purpose of education, Tattoo is not alien to Yoruba culture at all, in fact it has been part of Yoruba tradition all along. if we had not embraced foreign culture more than ours, this thread wouldn't have been necessary.

Tribal marks and Tattoo are two different things in Yorubaland. while tribal marks is applied for identification sake to differentiate between the several tribes and states, tattoo is for the purpose of fashion and belief.
Tattoo is perceived to be unpopular because our culture frowned at nudity, only the immediate family members/group can see it and it is common among the female folks. In most cases, it is done to either show adulthood of females, or to show status, strength, royalty, family title. etc etc.

I have seen traditional tattoo in the form of Yemoja, Ose sango, skulls, bird, snake, lizard, calabash. though they are not as beautiful as we have in modern days, but clear enough to pass a message. Tattoo are done using wood spikes, cashew fluid, ashes and fire.

In my family in Ondo state, our tatoo is a sign of a sword, because my we are warriors, my friend from Owu abeokuta has skull of a Ram as their.

Please lets embrace our culture tightly and encourage those that are interested.

PoliticsRe: What Is The Cause of The Mismanagement of Africa? by ikooko(m): 6:10pm On Jun 16, 2011
In my perception, greed and over reliance on borrowed culture and beliefs is the cause of mismanagement in Africa. It is right to adopt best practice in the world to the extent that will not jeopardize our existing structures. After colonization, we jettison most of our ideologies and adopt alien structures.

The advanced countries identified our greedy nature and capitalized on it. they secretly set tone for our economic management and polity to the extend that they sponsor political parties/candidates, NGOs to strengthen their course. This in my opinion is the origin of corruption in Africa.

In the Africa traditional setting, any vice against the community is collectively condemned and appropriately sanctioned, which serve as deterrent to others. Likewise, traditional groups like the ROF- Reformed Ogboni Fraternity are elders in the society liken to ministers and governors. they ruled without bias or take undue advantage of their position or office. All these are termed local and primitive by advanced country in other to continue their dominance over us.
