Same essay! I wrote on May 23rd. I paraphrased, I used generalities, I used examples, I used linking words and exceeded the word count... na 7 I get. I just carried the 7 like that. Other ones were 9, 8.5, 8.

careerwoman:

Very valid point.
I’m not an authority on writing matters but I think Joromi 12 is right.

Writing does require a lot of attention and practice. The tone must be formal except when writing informal letters. Some words aren't acceptable in formal writing. Jay E2 has a YouTube on this.

Paraphrasing is also very necessary. You can’t use the same words in the question over and over again. My essay topic was about Violence among young people being caused by parents spending long hours at work. While writing my introduction, I used Juvenile Delinquency to replace Violence among young people. In another paragraph, when I needed to make reference to it I used delinquent youths. Instead of salary, I used remuneration. I used different synonyms for the same word/phrase.

Then, paragraph structure is crucial.. Your thought process must flow. Put yourself in the reader’s shoes. You don’t want to read a disjointed essay. Prepare your ideas on the question paper first before you start writing. That way, you can decide which idea should come before the other. In each paragraph, the first sentence should introduce your idea starting with a linking phrase like Firstly, In addition, Furthermore etc.
2nd&3rd sentence should explain the idea (what, how, why) you can use examples for this. Phrases like, For instance, For example etc. The examples don’t have to be true, be creative. In my essay, I created a story about a research by an American Child Psychologist, John S. (I don’t know any John S. sef) and what he findings were to support my idea. The psychologist and his research were created in my head that day. grin
3rd/4th sentence should conclude the idea or show what the idea leads to. Phrases like, “As a result” can be used here.

I don’t want to derail the thread too much; my suggestion to IELTS takers, read ielts made easy pdf cover to cover if you can and watch Jays tips on YouTube. There’s a Cambridge book that has a range of vocabularies for the different sections from which essays are created and sample Band 9 essays. (I can’t remember the name and my laptop isn’t with me atm. Unfortunately, the materials aren’t on my phone). Ask for help from people around you. I understand we don’t want people knowing our plans but sometimes being too secretive does more harm than good. I got materials from my colleagues taking PLAB etc.
If I had kept my plans to myself, maybe I wouldn’t have gotten all their ideas, tips and materials.

Finally, may we obtain all our good heart desires.
God bless..

You're so right. It literally makes my head hurt but I just can't stop calculating. Internet that we pay 3.5 gig for 2,000 naira (MTN) is 10,300 CFA here for 3gig. Coke that is 100ngn is 400cfa. Bodyspray is even the worst! We buy it in Nigeria for between 700-900ngn now because of recession o,here it's between 2500-3000cfa. I don't even want to talk about house rent cause what we pay in a year is their monthly rate. What about when you make an effort to learn French? It's 110,000CFA a month at Institut Français. That's about 100k. Even with the recession it's still 10 times cheaper to live in Nigeria jor.

So we all know or maybe have the kind of family members that are loyal and supportive to a fault. They support, cheer you on and NEVER criticize you. These kind of family members are the reason why we have the Vic-o and the Tonto’s of the music industry.
They refuse to advise you to give up on certain dreams/ aspirations even when it is glaring to everyone that you are mediocre or just plain stink. God help you if you have overly supportive friends too; your own is finished, patapata.
My family members are like that, my friend are not much better. There was this one time I decided I wanted to be a Beauty Queen because They (friends and family) told me I was beautiful enough to become one; they kept complimenting me on my “rare beauty” until I finally bought a form and enrolled for this pageant(I won’t mention the name just in case).
The organizers of the pageant were either too broke or too stingy to put us in pageant boot camp. To be fair, I didn’t exactly pay for the form and I doubt if the other girls did either. Day of the pageant came and I arrived there in style with my entourage (family and very wicked friends who couldn’t advise me). I quickly found out that I was up against two other girls (only 3 of us enrolled) and that there was no venue for the event. That was when they really should have advised me to pack up and go back home, but they instead sized up my “competition” and told me that they didn’t stand a chance against me. I doubted them a little when I got a closer look at contestant numero 2 (she was so pretty!) but then I shrugged and concluded that they were after all my family and as such wouldn’t lead me astray…
…to be continued..

Dear Mr Ikemba,
Not an awful lot of people are interested in knowing the size of Cynthia’s husband’s manhood or how to satisfy a woman in bed in all those sexually explicit messages you so thoughtfully send. Even if some were, I’m sure they get it by now, 200 messages later.
We have all received messages from you or at least know someone who knows someone who has. You persist in terrorizing us even after we unsubscribe, your mails somehow keep popping up in our in boxes even after we mark them as spam. We have also heard from your evil twin,Ike Ikemba. He makes you seem like a saint in comparison with the kind of sexually charged messages he fires, I’m sure there are more than a few traumatized minors around the globe who were hapless enough to receive his emails.
Personally though, I think Ike Ikemba is just another one of your many personalities that take over when you become moonstruck.
Fishing you out should be a collective effort, a true show of Nationalism. I envision you sitting behind a computer screen in a dark face me I face you abode somewhere in a lagos slum, finger posed above the enter key right this moment, one click away from a fresh assault on our senses.
When we finally capture you, we should bind you up, hands out front where we can see them. You wouldn’t be able to wave them in the air like you just don’t care or produce a secret phone.
All we want to is WHY; why do you begin your messages with “Ikemba Here I was just going through the internet…” and persist in sending the same nauseating messages over and over again until we can almost recite them verbatim? Why are you so unoriginal? HOW,how did you get our email addresses; Was there a special selection process where you chose us, your lucky victims? WHO, who sent you? Is it maybe an arch enemy somewhere who’s having a good laugh at our expense this very moment?

I have to hand it to you though; you are persistent, consistent and unrelentless in your onslaught.

Unaffectionately,
Kate Benjamin
And a host of other concerned victims.
