Come on people, help! ![]() |
Hello All, I finally had a chance to inspect the property and I must admit it is somewhat overpriced. It does not have a living room, but does have 2 bedrooms, bath, kitchen. Therefore, I am recommending a downward modification of the rent, and will make a determination this week as to what that corrected amount ought to be. For all who have called, please be patient. We shall try to organize inspections soonest. Thank you. |
^^^^ Yes, I do. Transportation, storage, functional spaces, planned landscapes, water and air distribution and energy efficiency are relevant today, and will ALWAYS be an integral part of home design. Truth is, no matter how we try to reinvent the wheel, it is already a perfect design. We may tweak a few items, but look at designs from the 1950's and from the 1900's - same issues then, as we struggle with today. Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian home designs have the same elements as home design today, 100 years later. Some Frank Lloyd Wright designs from the early part of this century are still considered modern by today's standards! The discussions around the home of the future will, IMHO, focus primarily around spatial, elemental and textural challenges. |
@ Poster - In situations of conflict, there is usually more to the situation than any one party is willing to, or able to, disclose. However, irrespective of the particulars of your situation, and without any attempt at assigning blame, certain facts hold true: 1. NOTHING justifies spousal abuse. If you do not find a practical way to put a stop to this, you may lose your life, or be maimed. One practical strategy that I have seen work for friends is get your brothers or male relatives to go jack him up (not necessary to beat him, just a SERIOUS warning). The serious threat of violent retribution is usually sufficient to deter even the worst spouse beaters. I do not recommend this, but another friend awakened her hubby at night with a long, sharp knife to his throat, and another smaller, just as sharp knife to his precious jewels, and reminded him how easy it would have been to end it all. 2. Do not feel compelled to reveal any more intimate details of your life in this forum, nothing you say will be sufficient. It will still be a one-sided story and some gossip hungry folks here will still ask for more! 3. Every man, woman and child is, in the final analysis, responsible for their own actions. With or without external stimuli or provocation, your husband has made a decision to act in this manner that is hurtful and dangerous to say the least. It is his decision, not yours. 4. Seek the help of a marriage counsellor. Objective, practical, religious based counselling usually works wonders, but only where both parties are willing and ready. Please note the use of the word "practical". Most religious counselors simply quote passages reminding you of your shortcomings, and never address the underlying cause of conflict. Do not rely on the help of family - family members are usually biased, and one or both parties would feel like they are not being heard, and feel even more frustrated and bitter. 5. I seriously recommend that you do not have sexual intercourse with him until such a time as you BOTH get tested for STD's. While our mothers may have suffered in silence through infidelity and abuse, diseases today require more concerted effort than a simple shot of penicillin. Do not open yourself up to life ending diseases. I know folks on this forum will remind you that you will 'force' him to cheat by so doing, but remember, he is probably doing so already and of his own volition. At least stay safe while you search for help. 6. Hi all. Quick question regarding sending bulk sms - how do you get the telephone numbers to which these messages are sent? Do the sms companies have phone lists, or is there a marketing company one can buy a phone list from? TIA! |
Nigerian house of the future? So many opportunities! I agree that we should borrow from the past. A few basics: 1. Must include at least a 2 car garage, could be designed into the front of the house, side, back or off the front fence (like the French). 2. Must have a garden, preferably 2, front and back. 3. Smaller homes, more compact and highly functional. Less use of ground space. Setbacks people! 4. A whole house high pressure water pump. Every house has showers, but when was the last time you had a shower in a Nigerian upstairs bathroom? No more buckets!! 5. A central air conditioning system that is sustainable in Nigeria - split unit compressors almost seem to be part of design in Nigeria. 6. Perhaps #4 above will do away with those ugly water tanks built into roofs or hanging off the side of the house like an overstuffed molue bus!! 7. Generators sets that are optional, and truly standby. I could go on, but I would give away some of our design trademark secrets. ;o) |
Apologies, today was an incredibly busy field day. Please ring us tomorrow |
@ poster - It really comes down to measuring system orientation and origin, I'll explain - The US uses what is called the imperial units for measuring, while the rest of the world uses, or like Britain, has converted to using the metric system. Quite simply, Americans measure in feet, inches, miles, acres, ounces, quarts, pints or gallons etc, while the rest of the world measures in metres, centimetres, kilometres, hectares, litres, millilitres etc. Therefore, cars originating from the US will invariably be mileage based (as will people who have lived there for a while), and those from Europe or Asia will be kilometres. Hope this helps? |
I have found myself asking the same questions recently. I think it comes to a combination of ills - terrible/non existent maintenance culture, ignorant and ill trained mechanics and drivers, and really bad driving conditions! In my 18 years in the USA, I have driven several cars and have NEVER had to replace a brainbox, NEVER had a timing belt break while driving, NEVER had a bent propeller shaft from bad roads, NEVER had a knocked engine, NEVER had to top off coolant in a sealed engine between services (2009 Toyota Camry with 7K miles!), NEVER revved a car high to start it, nor revved high just before cutting off the ignition, NEVER had a vehicle just stop dead in the middle of the highway, NEVER had an A/C unit come ON when I step on the brakes, NEVER had wipers start moving when I step on the brakes!! I could go on with this bizarre list, but the point is, I have been in Nigeria 4 months, and ALL of these have occurred in 3 different vehicles! Then again, my mother has a driver who goes to the gas station to buy 'engine oil' and TOPS OFF old (2 MONTH OLD) oil! I saw him do this once, and in complete horror I asked him why, his answer was that was IHHO good maintenance - that oil has to be topped off twice before being replaced! How could I in good conscience sit there and argue with such nonsensical logic? This same chap also leaves a car with a 'trusted' mechanic to repair 1 problem, which invariably takes 2 months, and then once it is returned, 10 other problems surface!! There is just no end to it. I keep saying this, it is not unpatriotic to admit that we as a nation are in big trouble and need help. "My people perish for lack of knowledge / vision". 'Nuff said. |
