Lady Adorable: oh i see dear but i ask again where is the msg in your story, hmm?

Story?
A story is a narrative of events, fictional or real. What you see above is an editorial at best, an opinion, at worst.
LOL. Apparently you are part of the problem with the failure of the Nigerian educational system. Perhaps this is why you seem to be on the defensive.

The results are appalling, have been for several years now. The state of things with our youth is a direct reflection of the larger society, and WE HAVE ALL FAILED. Pretending like there is no problem or attempting cosmetic fixes is in large part why we are at a 25% pass rate.

This is a classic example of "If it ain't broken, don't fix it". A couple of decades ago, before all the experimenting with our educational system (6-3-3-4 etc) began, Nigeria had consistently some of the best results in the region. I am a proud product of Professor Babs Fafunwa's (RIP) tutorial college, FOUCOS, over 2 decades ago. Back then, we had an unspoken contest to see how many of us would score above 380 points. Most of us did, thanks to Mr Akpan, Mr Williams and the old staff and crew. Thanks to parents who cared about more than the acquisition of wealth and symbols of wealth. Most of us ended up in great schools in Nigeria and abroad, and were able to compete with the best of the best (That, by the way, is what you call a Story). Now kids are dwelling in failure and mediocrity, going on about scores of 242 and 263. Guys, in a four subject exam, that represents an average score of 60%. That is failure in any language. Wake up. Stop going on about TOEFL and SAT's, trying to transfer that mediocrity to a different country. If you don't take your studies and your future seriously in Nigeria, why would the visa officer at the American embassy consider you an asset to their country?

I shall now get off my soap box. Peace.

Education / Everyone Who Just Sat For JAMB Or WASCE... by infolpf: 7:10pm On Apr 24, 2012
... What the HELL IS WRONG WITH Y'ALL?

Only 2 students in the entire Nation scored above 300 points? Last year, 75% failure rate in WASCE? Whats worse is that this seems acceptable to some. Why are we not screaming at the top of our voices? Holding "Occupy Nigerian Education" sessions? Look around you and see the evidence of half literate people being churned out by schools. I read through this forum, I see letters written by so-called graduates, I hear the spoken English, and more importantly, see the lack of work ethic, the abject lack of logical reasoning in everyday activities. It used to be funny. Now my heart bleeds. My eyes have runout of tears. I am outraged!

Please make no mistake, I am not suggesting that there is a lack of intelligence, yes we do have some really intelligent kids - however, intelligence without a properly rounded education is like a piece of paper on a wall. You might as well roll it up and wipe your butts with it. Useless certifications! Also, please do not give the usual victim excuses about "our schools are bad, our teachers dont show up". What about all the students at the elitist private schools? Do they not sit for the same exams? How many of them scored above 300?

What the hell is the matter with our students? Our educational system?? Our teachers Our parents? Our freaking government??
Where do we even begin to fix this problem? Damn.

So, I called Wale today, and can attest to the fact that he knows his onions!
It turns out that it was quite simply an electronic issue - the security system had demobilized the vehicle, and the battery on the remote key chain was dead! One new remote battery later, and a small fix to the mess Ope had created, and the Astro was purring again! Interesting thing happened, it turns out Wale knows my family very well - he was trained by a gentleman named Mr Paul (RIP), who was THE expert at American cars! Mr Paul was my brothers mechanic some 20 odd years ago, until he passed away suddenly. Good man.

Now imagine that I was still dealing with Ope, I would have purchased the new sensor, and he'd still be standing at the hood looking confused and thinking about what to try next...

God save us from ignorance!

Hello Karlakassy & Chaircover -

We have a shipment (70+ dresses) of GORGEOUS wedding gowns, bridesmaids dresses and other accessories, mostly designer brand names purchased from bridal store liquidation in the USA. These were purchased from us at N30K!

These are NOT cheap China productions!

Call for a visit to our warehouse in Ebute Metta or to arrange a viewing at your location.

texazzpete:

The run in Lagos was a beta rollout to test the real-world implications of a move to 'cashless economy'. There is nothing wrong with a review after 2 months. In fact even a monthly review is a better proposition.

I humbly beg to differ Texazzpete.
I develop and implement strategies for multinationals for a living, and we NEVER as a policy develop strategies that have to be radically changed in the first 6 months - 1 year post roll-out!
Lets be clear - We are not talking about simple project based strategies here. Contractionary monetary policies such as this have long term implications at a macro and micro level, with overarching goals such as reducing inflation, spurring growth, boosting employment etc., and as such, have to be at a minimum:
1. well thought out, given the prevailing circumstances,
2. understood and absorbed by a well informed public,
3. implemented at the right time,
4. rolled out and given a chance to impact nationally, regionally and globally. Don't forget, this is Central Bank policy, with international ramifications. Not some low level company making fiscal decisions.

Anything short of that is trial and error, and Nigeria needs policy makers who KNOW EXACTLY what they are doing, and are not simply winging it! A Central Bank MUST be seen to be credible, at a minimum. However, this is not the place for a discourse on economics or government appointments that lack merit, so I shall leave it there.

Regarding the first part of your statement - in writing "Why Lagos?" I was responding to some other poster, who asked the question. I was not asking the question. My answer quite simply was that Lagos is the financial capital of Nigeria, and as such makes sense as the location for a test.

Onwan: Ok then, you can call Ope on 0807.664.4097, you have to be available to supervise.

Had quite an experience with Ope today-
He was very responsive, I called him Friday evening, he showed up Monday morning. However, from the minute he took one look at the car, I knew I was in trouble!

Problem?
2000 Chevrolet Astro van, just in from the US. Off the container, we could not get it started. They figured the usual flat battery issue, called a battery chap to work on the battery. Still would not start, and car alarm would now trip off every time they tried to jump it.

My objective this morning was to get Mr Ope to diagnose & fix issue. Ope shows up WITHOUT TOOLS, walks around the car several times, with a confused look on his face. Based on Onwan's suggestion, I had a senior driver available to supervise him. Once vehicle was jumped, he managed, to be fair to him, to disarm the alarm (but I guess even a low level car thief can do that). Then it was confusion. He tried every guess he could think of (most of which were not very educated guesses), then finally settled on the kickstarter. He called some other chap to take a look, this person (I presume to be a "rewire"wink then manages to remove, clean and reinstall the kickstarter. No luck.

Engine would make the usual noises when the key was turned, but still would not turn over (start). Then Ope tells us that it is now the "sensor wires" that need to be replaced and he could get them for N31,000! I asked him to shut down and leave, giving him enough money to get him home!

Lesson learned?
Ope, like most Nigerian Mechanics, plays the trial and error game, unfortunately at the expense of the vehicle owner.

Bottom line? I am still in need of help with the Astro. Any ideas?
