Any policy that has to be reversed / reviewed within 2 months of implementation was a bad policy to begin with! Nonetheless, we must thank them for having the courage to admit to an error. Why Lagos? While Abuja may be the geographic capital, Lagos is now, and perhaps always will be, the financial capital of Nigeria. I still insist, IMHO, Nigeria is not fundamentally ready for a cashless economy. The argument of trying to eliminate financial crimes has just been made redundant - 419ers would gladly pay 3%, I'll bet! |
Has nothing to do with corruption. Quite simply, nigeria is considered a "hardship posting" for most multi-nationals. (Why? Come to Nigeria and look around ) As such, anyone posted to such a country gets significantly more benefits than others. Some people look forward to such postings, even if for a short period, others flee from them and forego the $$. In addition, most companies have contracts that obligate them to pay a share of profits to employees, usually as end of fiscal year bonuses. Oil companies specifically have such contracts. Remember the news reports from 2010/2011 about the janitors in Venezuelan Oil companies getting fat bonus cheques? Get off the conspiracy theory, guys. |
slimyem:Never say impossible. At the point of my application, I was not resident in the US. I was simply there on a 4 week vacation, after my exams. I went to the US Consulate, applied and was granted a visitors visa. I know a lot a people are turned down for visas everyday, and I do not mean to understate the difficulty others have faced. The reality is however, visas are granted everyday also. |
hey Slimyem! It is certainly possible to get a scholarship in the US as a foreign student, mostly merit based or sometimes through sports. A good candidate however, is one who not only excels at his exams, but is well rounded, writes a darned good application essay, and appeals to the admissions committee. Has he volunteered at charitable organizations? Does he have a hardship he overcame in spite of the odds? Point is, it helps to have something that sets you apart from the thousands of applications that they have to sieve through. One trick - it usually helps to pay a visit to the school of choice, and talk directly with an admissions officer or President. You immediately set yourself apart from the crowd! How do I know all this? I was such a person, about 19 years ago. I knew exactly what I wanted to study, applied to the school in Chicago, hand delivered my application (my application fees were even waived ;o)) and DARED to ask for a chat with the Dean. I was ushered into his office about 30 minutes later, chatted for about 10 minutes and left. I got my letter of admission before I left Chicago a few weeks later, and an offer of partial tuition! God is awesome. There are organizations in Nigeria established to offer information to folks like you. Try the US Student Achievement Program (USAP) in Lagos. I believe they have just moved offices to the US Embassy building at Eleke Crescent, VI. Take a look at their website and try to schedule an appointment. http://www.usapglobal.org/about.htm Good luck. |
Report: He apparently killed himself to prevent his ex-wife getting life insurance. Sad death, even more sad reason. http://cdn.mediatakeout.com/53954/shock-report-don-conelius-reportedly-killed-himself-to-prevent-hs-ex-wife-from-getting-his-life-insurance-money.html |
@ OP - Why Thadie Newton and not an Igbo woman? Quite simply because she is an internationally renowned actress of African origin, not to mention a much better actress than just some unknown Igbo woman. The Producers are in the business of making MONEY through movies that will appeal to a large audience, not making movies for the sake of art. Second part of your question- No, I do not have a problem with it. It is called ACTING, and it is done the world over. Have you never watched a Nollywood movie with Genevieve playing the role of a yoruba girl, or Omotola playing an Igbo girl? Did that bother you? Its acting, sweetie, lighten up or dont go see it when it comes out. |
This has just proven my theory that the activities of "Boko Haram" are not precipitated by a desire to spread Islam or as has been suggested, to stop the infiltration of foreign influence. This is now, and has always been about economics - dollar, naira, euro, any currency that is available! These guys are no different from the so called Niger-Delta terrorists - the mercenary goals are the same! The only perceptible differences perhaps are 1) the method of terror - one group chose to kidnap, the other has chosen the path of murder and mayhem; 2) one group operated from a base in the "south-south", the other from the north; 3) one group probably grew up as christians, the other as moslems. Make no mistake, this is not about religion or ethnicity! |
^^ hear, hear. Applause! |

Hey, I am not a car guru by any means, but I like to think I am somewhat mildly self educated on engine maintenance both by the school of hard knocks, and by common sense. The one thing I find in Nigeria is that most people I have spoken to do not seem to know that every car manufacturer has a recommended maintenance schedule, which if followed religiously would lead to years of enjoyment! Of course there have to be adjustments for harsh driving conditions, and allowance for oil changes in between recommended service intervals. Please find some common ones below: Toyota: http://smg.toyotapartsandservice.com/guides.php Honda: https://techinfo.honda.com/rjanisis/pubs/om/SI9999/SI9999O00132A.pdf Thanks to all the NL gurus (Sultaan, Onwan, Siena et al) for saving us from ourselves and bad mechanics!! |
plappville -Quite simply, because Jesus' parents were Jewish and He was raised as a Jew. Yes, baptism (mikveh in Hebrew) existed before Christianity, but it was generally used for cleansing, not for dedication to God. I am Christian, and I choose infant baptism because it is symbolic of my dedication to God, and a partial fulfillment of my responsibility to "bring my child up in the way that he should go". In the same manner as circumcision was done before my child's 8th day on earth. Jesus' baptism (by John) marked the beginning of, and the ACCEPTANCE of, His ministry - repentance of sins and salvation. His baptism, His life and his death were for my sins and yours, not His! Jesus' appearance at the Temple at the age of 12 was quite possibly in preparation for the Jewish Bat Mitzvah (coming of age), which for boys occurs at the age of 13, until he was led by the spirit to challenge the religious focus of some of the Rabbi's, to the detriment of the Word! In addition, His baptism at around the age of 30 was predestined, and led by the Holy Spirit. His death at around the age of 33 was also predestined! These are not "examples" - this was His destiny, and does not suggest that every Christian must be baptized at 30 or die at 33! The Bible in its simplicity tries to teach us to accept the Word as a child accepts the word of its parents. Let us not make something so beautiful a matter of public debate. Accept spirituality for what it means to YOU, or leave it be. Do not focus on the rites of RELIGION, or make yourself the religious police, condemning others who do things differently from you. |
