Politics / Hon. Patrick Obahiagbon's New Year Resolution - No More Big Grammar! by infonubia(m): 6:36pm On Jan 02, 2014
Guys, something is happening in this new year!

The Grammarian General of the Federal Republic, Honorable Patrick Obahiagbon(GGFR) took to Facebook to announce his new year resolution - No more big grammar!

In a shocking move, the Chief of Staff to the Edo State governor wrote the update in Pidgin English.

Only time will tell if the honorable can keep this resolution. I'm going to miss his big grammar though.

Do you think he wouldn't break this resolution? I doubt it.

Let's hope that will begin to change this year. Nigerian workers need to demand a change in such treatment.

Nairaland / General / ...and Here Goes Another New Year Resolution by infonubia(m): 6:11pm On Dec 31, 2013
I was thinking the other day, what's the problem with January of every year? Whenever we reach December, we tend to reflect on our mistakes, the flops, the good, bad, and ugly. There's nothing wrong with it - except that by the end of January of the new year, most people give up.

It's insanity to do the same thing over and over again, expecting different results. "While January is usually one of the weakest months in terms of retail sales, some products buck the trend. Kitchen equipment (such as smoothie-makers, soup makers and blenders), sportswear and fitness products, smoking cessation products and fresh food are popular in January," according to Bryan Roberts, retail analyst at Kantar Retail.

Obviously, gym memberships do very well in January due to most people's good intention to lose weight or exercise more.

But, as Vitalsmarts highlights, "nearly 30% of people will give up on their resolutions within the first month and an additional 25.18% will give up before the three-month mark. Which could mean that shortly after acquiring the much desired smoothie-maker, it will quickly get shoved at the back of the cupboard, to quietly gather dust."

Does that sound like you? You set your goals and plans - determine to make them work; however, by mid-year, if not February, you've either forgotten about your plan and the gadgets you spent a lot of money on("investment" you call it). So how can we change this? Here are some few tips.

Tips For You

I may not be a "resolution" guru, but I know one or two things about sticking to plans.

1) Seeing is Believing. Stick to plan...You didn't see that one coming, did you? Seriously! put that plan in a place where you can see it everyday. This creates a mental picture in your mind. "The body is a slave of your mind," a wise man told me. It's true. Your mind is the template - the fresh canvas where you can paint your desires and goals. As you continue to reflect on the plan, even when your body is sore and you're tired - maybe that business deal did not turn out the way you plan it, you'll have the drive to keep going.

2) Find accountability partners or friends. These are the human alarm clocks that can remind you about a specific plan, such as losing weight until you get it done. Get a gym buddy or a study partner.

Warning: spouse or significant other may not be an ideal human alarm clock because it can easily turn to nagging - which is rather annoying than encouraging.

3) State your Reasons. Finally, let's focus on how important these resolutions are to you. Write it down. Sometimes, we lose the steam - the passion or motivation to get things done because they lose the meaning over time. Why do you want to lose weight? Why are you trying to graduate this year? Why do you want to make more money? Document them! As the new year rolls by, reviewing your reasons for completing this target will give you the drive to finish. It's like stopping by a gas station to fill up your tank.

InfoNubia wishes you the best as you prepare for the new year 2014.

Nairaland / General / Top 10 One-liners On Nigerian Blogs And Forum 2013 by infonubia(m): 4:27pm On Dec 31, 2013
2013 turned out to be my year of involvement with Nigerian blogs. I have been visitingsites like Linda Ikeji, Bella Naija, NotjustOk, and a few other blogs prior to 2013 but my participation in the blog community skyrocketed this year for obvious reasons.

I've heard about Nairaland, maybe visited a few times, but I never really paid the forum much attention until InfoNubia took off and it's been a decent source of traffic to the blog. Besides, you find the craziest funniest comments by Nigerians there.

I have compiled a list of top 10 common one-liners that you'd find on a Nigerian blog/forum in 2013. Let's jump right in!

10. Ok - This is another way of acknowledging the post. It's a kind of "I was here" type notification. It doesn't say anything about the post. Another variation of "Ok" is "Just passing." I wonder where dem dey go.

9. Next - This essentially means "boooooring!" or "e no concern me." The reader is just ready to move on the the next post.

8. Too Long - Just mistakenly write a post longer than 700-word, you are going to get lots of "too long", "make you summarize." Well, except if it's an 18-page letter from OBJ to GEJ or the latest gist on the COZA scandal...lol

7. Mtcheeeew - I wonder who came up with that spelling. I remember some stand up comedian used to joke about spelling "mtcheeew" and suddenly the spelling was manufactured and it's been commonly used. I hope it makes it into the dictionary as an official word...lol.

6. Na wah o - This one is an evergreen. It's been around for so long and it doesn't seem to be going any where. When the matter don pass "be careful", all you can say as a correct Naija person is "Na wah oooo" with emphasis on the "ooo."

5. No comment - I can't get past this one. Thinking about it cracks me up all the time. Why would you read a post, decided to comment, and type "No comment"?! If indeed you have no comment, why bother comment? LOL.

4. First to comment - There was a time on NotjustOk where "first to comment" was the ish! You would almost think these people get some kind of freebie for being first. Soon enough, others started the 2nd & 3rd to comment. Some even go as far as overly dramatizing the fact they are first, giving shout outs to everyone from MTN and Glo to other readers. It was and still is fun (I think).

3. Go and die - This is relatively new. I've been seeing it more on forums. "Go and die" was coined after the governor of Edo State, Adams Oshiomole, made the insensitive comment to a widow. He has since apologized and handsomely compensated the woman. However, blog readers and forum participants have taken it to another level. If someone makes a comment you find offensive, you tell the person to "go and die."

2. Who get BB charger? - This one is like the most random comment I see on blogs. It's so random yet sometimes funny. There are other variations like "I beg who get pin mouth charger?", "who get Nokia/Techno charger?" There's something about it that I find hilarious.

1. End Time Things - 2013 has definitely got be the year of "End Time Things" on Nigerian blogs and forum. It was a plague on comments. Any weird story is met with dozens of "end time things."

Here are some examples:

Story: Super Eagle Wins the African Nations Cup - Response: End Times Things!
Man claims to be Jesus - Response: End Times Things!
Arsenal is on top of the league table - Man Utd fans response: End Times Things!

Bloggers and blog visitors, what are some of the most common comments you've read on Nigerian blogs this year? Share your common comments, I'd love to read them. If you don't have any, just put "No comment", it's allowed....lol

Happy New Year everyone!

Peinstein: I am not too versed on our labor laws either but implementation has always been our problem. I once used a part of the law to enforce a leave some years ago and my italian boss had to comply when he confirmed it; however most people do not know the law exists and so do not know their rights.
You are spot on! Imagine, you had to educate ur boss on the law. That means you could have sued ur employer if they violated the law. Organizations need to understand these laws to protect themselves and their employees.

Career / Do Labor Laws Protect Nigerian Workers? by infonubia(m): 11:56pm On Dec 26, 2013
Before I continue with this post, please note that I'm not an expert on labor laws. I'm just a concerned citizen who is writing in response to recent revelations about the maltreatment some Nigerian workers face at their workplaces. Thank you!

The story of Alice Ossai, the 7-month pregnant cleaning unit supervisor at a packaging company in Lagos, who was beaten up by her Lebanese shift manager to point where she lost her pregnancy (read the story here), really got me wondering if we have labor laws in Nigeria and how such laws protect the workers.

I can't fathom why a supervisor would even engage in verbal assault on a subordinate, talk more of a physical assault. I believe its a result of blatant disregard for the law. That feeling of Nigeria is a country where you can get away with offenses with grave consequences, it all depends on who you know.

Some of these employers don't even know that there are labor laws that could potentially put them out of business if violated. I did a quick Google search and I found the Nigerian Labor Act of 1990.

Since it has been established that we do have have labor laws, the issue herein lies in the implementation and review of such laws to ensure that workers aren't maltreated like Alice and several others whose cases have gone unnoticed.

All workers should feel safe - both physically and emotionally - in their work environment. Unfortunately, this isn't really the case for most people. The people in authority at some workplaces have made themselves demi-gods and principalities. They verbally abuse their subordinates day in day out. Some work places place unrealistic expectations on their employees and still expect them to perform at the highest levels.

This issue transcends just the corporate work environment. How about in our homes? For folks who have housemaids, how do you treat them? There's been several stories about the level of brutality and maltreatment that some housemaids experience. I believe they should be protected by the law as well.

All form of harassment at the workplace should be addressed and violators should have to face the consequence.

I'm not sure if there is, but we need a regulatory board that monitors labor activities. Some kind of occupational safety administration where workers can lodge complaints of unfair practices at work. The board should also be empowered to enforce our labor laws.

The president shouldn't have to intervene like he did in the case of Mrs. Ossai because like someone rightly said, if the president keeps intervening in every one of such cases, then he may never have time for anything else.

I hope Mrs. Ossai gets justice soon and labor laws are enforced and respected.

You raised a very valid point. It got me thinking about labor laws in Nigeria. Does it protect the Nigerian worker? is the an avenue where workers can report cases of abuse at any level? You just gave me an idea for a new post on the blog. I'm working on it right now. Thanks! smiley

The Nigerian presidency has made moves to investigate the disheartening case of Alice, a 7-month pregnant Nigerian factory worker in Lagos who lost her baby after being beaten up by her Lebanese boss on December 13th.

Nigeria's presidential spokesman, Reuben Abati tweeted:

Foreign Affairs / Paedophile Nabbed After Burglar Who Broke Into His House Tipped Off The Cops by infonubia(m): 6:14am On Dec 25, 2013
A thief who broke into a suspected paedophile football coach's house in Spain called the cops after discovering that some of the videotapes stolen from the house were incriminating.

Prompted by an anonymous tip, presumably from the burglar, police found three videotapes of sexual abuse against children aged about 10.

The tapes had been placed beneath a brown car parked in the south-central city of Jaén, along with a note giving them the address of the suspect, police said in a statement.

"I have had the misfortune to have these tapes fall into my hands and feel obliged to submit them so you can do your work and put this ... in jail for life," the anonymous note read.

The alleged aggressor was identified from the content of the videotapes and arrested after a search of his home and the indoor football club where he worked, police said.

Officers said they had so far traced four victims, including a 16-year-old boy who had been abused since he was 10.

The suspect had reported a burglary at his home nine days earlier, listing several appliances as stolen but making no mention of his missing video camera and tapes, police said.

That's one sharp thief! He cleverly reported the paedophile without any traces to him. He probably called from a payphone too.

Note to parents - be careful who you trust with your kids. Lots of sick people out there.
