86-year-old Robert W. Wilson, a multi-millionaire philanthropist, took how own life by jumping off 16th floor balcony of his luxury apartment in New York City on Monday December 23, 2013, just a few months after suffering a debilitating stroke. The Wall Street mogul whose personal fortune was estimated to be about $800million recently told friends he had given all but $100million to charity. He apparently could not give away the rest because it was tied up in long-term investments. The New York Post reports that Wilson left a note before leaping at about 11 a.m. from the 16th floor of the famed San Remo, which overlooks Central Park West, cops said. “He always said he didn’t want to suffer, and when the time came, he would be ready,” said Wilson’s friend, Stephen Viscusi. Wilson donated $100 million each to the World Monuments Fund, the Nature Conservancy, the Environmental Defense Fund and the Wildlife Conservation Society. One of his favorite initiatives was “saving” Catholic private schools, although he was an atheist. Wilson was married to his only wife, Marilyn, for about 35 years before they divorced. He leaves behind an brother, William, 88, who lives in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. He has no children. http://www.infonubia.com/2013/12/86-year-old-multi-millionaire-jumps-to.html |

The Defence Headquarters has confirmed that over 50 insurgents were killed and about 20 vehicles destroyed in an operation it carried out on Monday night. This is contained in a statement signed by the Director, Defence Information, Maj.-Gen. Chris Olukolade in Abuja on Monday. It said that the operation was carried out to track insurgents who carried out the last Friday pre-dawn attacks on Mohammed Kur Barracks in Bama LGA of Borno. The military said that the vehicles which were destroyed were the ones used during the attack on the barracks. “The vehicles were sited through air surveillance as the terrorists were making efforts to cross the borders. “Although a good number of the insurgents escaped with bullet wounds, some have been arrested. “Over 50 of them died in the course of exchange of fire with ground troops in the ongoing operations to apprehend fleeing terrorists,” the director said. The statement added that the military lost 15 soldiers, mostly from the attack while some died during the pursuit. “A total of five civilians also died during the attack.” The statement said that intensive cordon and search operations were still ongoing to fish out the insurgents who might be lurking around communities in the area. It said that the families affected by the attacks have been relocated to other military locations. Source |
Yes, that’s right. All truth is relative. It’s an easy concept for philosophers to understand; however, religious folks find such concepts hard to grasp. If you find it hard to believe, it’s time you put on your thinking cap and stop believing everything you hear. Let me start with a few simple examples. Pick an action, any action, and ask yourself if that action is universally good or bad. Chances are the action is good in some context while bad in others. The act of taking a life is kill, execute (potentially good), or murder (bad). What some might call execute, others will call murder; same action, different perspectives. Another example is intercourse. It can be legitimate (if within a marriage or as accepted by society), adultery/fornication (if outside a marriage); again, same action, different perspectives. Even in science, absolutes are rare. Facts sometimes are not facts, and all scientific facts are hinged on certain assumptions. As long as those assumptions hold up, the facts will remain intact. Once any of the assumptions is false, the fact simply becomes a theory. A simple example is “1 + 1 = 2”. People would say that “facts are facts” and “opinions are opinions”; they would then say that “1 + 1 will always equal 2” to validate that theory. Guess what? 1+1 is not always 2. For that answer to be true, the assumption must be that the numbers are decimal-based; in binary system, 1 + 1 = 10 (one-zero, not ten). All of a sudden, “1+1” doesn’t automatically equal 2. Why is this concept important to understand? Those who choose to absolutely believe in their religions will argue that this concept is wrong, mainly because their deity or holy book told them that specific things are absolutely right or wrong. Given the number of religions/beliefs in the world and an even larger number of sects within each religion, it’s no coincidence that the clashing of these absolute beliefs usually result in violence or persecution. Many battles and wars have been waged and devastation wrought based on these ideologies. I expect some Christian readers to contend that this concept is false. Their reason is simple: Bible speaks in absolutes and they trust the Bible; hence, there are absolute truths. While I’ll defer Biblical interpretations to another article, I must explain to them that they are wrong. Why? For them to be right, they would have to be omniscient. If they aren't omniscient, then, they don’t know everything and as a result, they cannot prove that they are correct; they can only believe they are correct. When it comes to absolutes, only facts (and not beliefs) are needed. When it comes to religion, about half of the “facts” are opinions, based on experiences, beliefs, and readings. A quarter of the “facts” are historical events that have been tailored to suit the specific religion. Only about a quarter are actual facts that can be proven. Another important tidbit, from a religious perspective, is that all religions have their individual concepts of reward (heaven) and punishment (hell), and requirements for getting there; in many cases, the core requirements are different. The followers of each religion need to understand that if the requirements for heaven are different for each religion, there’s a big chance they all have different deities. As such, the truths given by each deity are relative to those deities. So, if one deity’s truth is that “all living things are sacred” and another deity’s truth is that “man is above other living organisms”, there shouldn't be outburst between the followers about which truth is correct. They should all accept that their version of the truth is correct. Obviously, since there can only be one Supreme Being, it stands to reason that all the other deities will be found to be false. However, it’s not our job to prove one right and others wrong (since we are not omniscient); all we need to do is continue with our faith and hope we are right. The deity to whom the universe belongs will be the one whose truth is the absolute truth, not because it is the absolute truth, but because it’s his/her universe, and he will reveal himself whenever he desires to do so. If your deity is truly the creator of the universe, he shouldn't need mere humans to fight for him. So, next time you are in a situation where these “absolute” truths present themselves, remember that those truths are relative to him who made the rules. My favorite way of answering such questions is this: just as many things in nature, it depends. Written by: General Zod http://www.infonubia.com/2013/12/all-truth-is-relative-another-look-at.html |

To me, the date doesn't matter. There are folks who don't know their real date of birth and they just adopt a day. I'm less interested in the history of the Dec. 25th, neither am I really interested in the activities that comes with the Christmas season (which I admit is really beautiful). I'm more interested in the significance of the day. It's a reminder of the birth of our savior...and the importance of what his birth brought...PEACE on earth. |
Show me where December was written in the bible first..since it has come to mean that whatever isn't in the bible isn't real.
hahaha...nice come back! |

The General Overseer of the Deeper Christian Life Ministry, Pastor W.F Kumuyi, has again warned members of the church against celebrating Christmas, saying the annual celebration of Christmas is idolatrous and unscriptural. Kumuyi warned that partaking in the celebration made Christians to go back from the commandment of Jesus Christ. The cleric said this on Saturday at the annual national December convention of the church, which held at the church’s camp ground in Ogun State. He said, “We don’t celebrate Christmas. It actually came from idolatrous background. That is why you don’t hear us sing what they call Christmas carol, Never! We always say it is the December retreat. We are only gathering together because it is the holiday period and love the lord more, and rededicate ourselves more. “When you find anybody coming in, or any leader, trying to introduce the idolatry of mystery Babylon, that they call Christmas and you want to bring all the Christmas carol saying that is the day that Jesus was born, and you don’t find that in the Acts of the Apostles or in the early church, then you don’t find that in the church either. If you don’t know that before, now you know.” He warned that any of the church’s leaders that tried to introduce the “idolatry of Christmas” into any section of the church would be sanctioned, while also encouraging other believers in Christ to jettison the celebration as part of their sacrifice to perfection. Kumuyi said the duty of the church was to make people more like Jesus Christ and not join in worldly celebrations. “We are not trying to make the church turn like the world. We want it to be like Jesus Christ, and more like the Apostles. If you don’t have that mind with us, then you have permission to go to other places,” he added. But the Director of Social Communications, Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos, Monsignor Gabriel Osu, in his reaction to Kumuyi’s proclamation, said, “I don’t know what he means by saying the practice of celebrating Christmas is wrong. “Is he saying that Christ wasn't born? That he didn't’t come to die for us? Does he not celebrate his own birthday? Do Kumuyi’s pastors not celebrate him? It is not everything I react to; some people just seek attention. If Kumuyi is a Christian, then he must believe in Christ. “The celebration of Christmas didn't just start today; it is too public an event for anyone to say that they don’t know what it is about. “If Kumuyi is condemning the commercialization of Christmas, I can understand that. Christ came to redeem us from our lost state; this was actualize through his coming, his birth; that is why we celebrate Christmas. It is the fulfillment of God’s promise.” “I saw him on the television a few days ago. He was in Akwa Ibom State and was the chief preacher during their Christmas celebration event. Kumuyi is just saying what he feels; he is not making any doctrinal statement.” The spokesperson for the Christian Association of Nigeria, Oshodi chapter, Lagos State, Pastor Barnabas Otoibhi, said that Christmas was worth celebrating. Otoibhi told one our correspondents in a telephone interview that the origin of Christmas was not as important as its essence. He said, “The origin of Christmas, as we know it, could be traced to Roman Emperor, Constantine. Christmas was a day for celebrating the Sun God. However, because Constantine was a Christian, the day was changed to commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ. “The tradition has continued to date and since the aim of Christmas is to celebrate Jesus since there is nothing bad in honoring Jesus. Also, the worship of the Sun God was done in Rome and not everywhere in the world, so it is not part of our history. “We mark Christmas with the singing of songs as a day, which has now been consecrated.” http://www.punchng.com/news/christmas-is-idolatrous-kumuyi/ What do you think? http://www.infonubia.com/2013/12/christmas-is-idolatrous-pastor-kumuyi.html |

mink505: Keep blaming white people for all your problems. Invisible hands ko, supernatural hands ni.Thanks for the comment. It's about time we put our destiny in our hands rather than continued dependence on some handouts from the West. BTW, the lady has been fired and she also issued an apology. https://www.nairaland.com/1565790/justine-sacco-issues-apology-after |
Justine Sacco, formerly a PR executive for the Internet giant InterActive Corp., has been fired over her tweet on Friday that read: "Going to Africa. Hope I don't get AIDS. Just kidding. I'm white!" Sacco apologized today, saying she is "ashamed" for her insensitivity to the millions of people living with the virus. She issued the statement to South African newspaper The Star, and also shared the following apology: Words cannot express how sorry I am, and how necessary it is for me to apologize to the people of South Africa, who I have offended due to a needless and careless tweet," Sacco said. "There is an AIDS crisis taking place in this country, that we read about in America, but do not live with or face on a continuous basis. Unfortunately, it is terribly easy to be cavalier about an epidemic that one has never witnessed firsthand.I hope she's learned a valuable lesson about the sensitivity of our words - both intentional and unintentional. http://www.infonubia.com/2013/12/justine-sacco-issues-apology-after.html |
demmy: You're exactly where racist whites want you with such self blame/self hate post. They want you blaming yourself for your condition as if their invisible hands are not to blame.Really? How so? Would you rather us continue to depend on foreign aid from the West? I would think that the comment is meant to spur us into action? What do I propose is a better way to break free from the hold the West has on Africa? |
^^^ Well said! |
Titiluvly: Silly tweet from a silly white womanYou can say that again. |
While social media is a powerful tool to get your message out, it could also land you in trouble. One wrong tweet and it's all over! Justine Sacco, a public relations executive for a major media company who tweeted a racist 'joke' on Friday, has sparked a social media revolt. Sacco was unaware she had become front page news because she posted the message while boarding a long-haul flight. Here's some excerpt from Daily Mail: Justine Sacco - the Communications Director for IAC, a parent company for Vimeo, OkCupid, Tinder, CollegeHumor, and Dictionary.com - was flying to Cape Town when she Tweeted: 'Going to Africa. Hope I don't get AIDS. Just Kidding. I'm White!'With this recent development, I don't think Sacco would have the best of Christmas in Cape Town. For a PR executive, her tweet was highly unprofessional, clueless, and immature. http://www.infonubia.com/2013/12/white-woman-tweets-going-to-africa-hope.html |
The COZA controversy is definitely one memorable event. |
^^^ Na so! |
Such a touching story. I don't know how many people would be willing to do this for their friends. Bless her heart! |
Trust Nigerians to always seize every opportunity to make money. At the time I wrote my top 5 memorable highlights of 2013 (you should read it and comment), I didn't know about this picture. I would have added it to the 'open letter' event. Some business savvy Nigerians are now selling Obasanjo vs. Jonathan, and Iyabo Obasanjo vs. OBJ open letters.
