Computers / Change Your Passwords: 2 Million Facebook/Google/Yahoo/Twitter Passwords Stolen by infonubia(m): 9:23pm On Dec 04, 2013
This may be a good time to change your Facebook, Twitter, Google, and other passwords.

CNN Money reports that hackers have stolen usernames and passwords for nearly two million accounts at Facebook, Google, Twitter, Yahoo and others.

The massive data breach was a result of keylogging software maliciously installed on an untold number of computers around the world, researchers at cybersecurity firm Trustwave said. The virus was capturing log-in credentials for key websites over the past month and sending those usernames and passwords to a server controlled by the hackers.

On Nov. 24, Trustwave researchers tracked that server, located in the Netherlands. They discovered compromised credentials for more than 93,000 websites including Twitter, Yahoo, Gmail, LinkedIn, to name a few.

Identity theft is a serious issue and you never know what sensitive information you might have in those emails. To avoid any unnecessary headaches from your information being compromised, just change those passwords and make it a habit to periodically change change them.

Some tips for creating a strong password

Make sure your password:

- Is at least eight characters long.
- Does not contain your user name, real name, or company name.
- Does not contain a complete word.
- Is significantly different from previous passwords.
- Contains characters from each of the following four categories:
- Uppercase letters
- Lowercase letters
- Numbers
- Symbols

Politics / Man Jailed For Stealing Shoes At Mosque by infonubia(m): 8:55pm On Dec 04, 2013
An Abuja Grade 2 Area Court in Kado on Wednesday sentenced a 28-year-old man, Isah Abdullahi, to four months in prison with hard labor for stealing seven pairs of shoes from a mosque after the convict pleaded guilty to the one-count charge.

The presiding officer, Mr Ahmed Ado, said that Abdullahi was a heartless man, having stolen from a mosque. He said that if anyone could go to a church or mosque to steal, it meant that the person was heartless and could do worst things anywhere.

What would make a make go steal shoes from a mosque? The only answer I could come up with is - exremely hunger.

I wonder why we are quick to jail petty thieves but the 'politrickians' that embezzle millions are often let off the hook.

Romance / Twin Wedding: Twin Sisters Simultaneously Marry Twin Brothers In Lagos by infonubia(m): 7:33pm On Dec 04, 2013

Love is a beautiful thing, especially when it comes in doubles. That's the story of the Okunniyis and Okuezes when the Okunniyi twin sisters married the Okueze twin brothers at the Foursquare Gospel Church, Ikeja, Lagos.

According to reports, Guinness Book of World Records has named the Nigerian twin set who got married on the same day, the 1st in Africa and the 251st in the world (can't confirm this).

The Okuniyi's are from Ondo State while the Okuezes are from Delta State.

Wishing the couples a happy and blissful married life.

Education / Re: ASUU Strike: FUTO Denies Firing All Academic Staff by infonubia(m): 8:16pm On Dec 03, 2013
emma bowin: genuine source please?
The school website is your source. While you are at it, please tell me why a news of such magnitude is only reported by Tribune? What happened to other news outlet?

According to the Tribune,
The sack order was made known by the Public Relations Officers (PRO) of the institution, Mr Chike Ezenwa, while speaking with the Nigerian Tribune in Owerri, through telephone.
According to him, the senate of the university had declared all the positions of academic staff in the institution, adding that they would be advertised starting from Monday, December 2.

However, what the school posted on Dec. 2nd is a press release. Besides, is a sack communicated to reporters over the phone? wouldn't there be an official letter to the affected lecturers?
Education / ASUU Strike: FUTO Denies Firing All Academic Staff by infonubia(m): 8:04pm On Dec 03, 2013
The Public Relations Officer of the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO), Chike Ezenwa, has denied that the school management sacked the striking lecturers of the university.

He denied the sack report via a telephone call to a reporter today in Owerri, the capital of Imo state.

A press release on the school's website dated Dec. 2, 2013 states thus:

The Senate of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri at its 375th Extraordinary meeting held on Monday, December 2, 2013 considered the directive of the Federal Government on resumption of duty by Academic Staff in Federal Universities and decided that academic activities in the University should resume immediately for the conclusion of the 2012/2013 Rain Semester.

Consequently all students of the University are required to return to campus between Monday December 2, and Friday December 8, 2013 while Rain Semester Examinations commence on Monday December 9, 2013 and end on Saturday December 21, 2013.

Accordingly, all academic staff are required to proceed immediately to their respective Departments to sign in for resumption of duty not later than Wednesday December 4, 2013.

Based on this press release, it is safe to say that the school has chosen to comply with the Federal Government's directive.

It's about time the strike ended. I remember spending about 6 months (or longer) at home during my first year in FUTA. It delays the students unnecessarily. Especially in a country like Nigeria where age is an important factor in securing a good job.

Health / Is It Possible To Have Perfect Flat Stomach Just 4 Days After Childbirth? by infonubia(m): 5:12am On Dec 03, 2013
While I find hard to believe, Norwegian footballer's wife and fitness blogger Caroline Berg Eriksen posted a picture on Instagram of her flat stomach, complete with six-pack, and toned thighs, just four days after giving birth (See picture here).

The picture sparked outrage in the Norwegian media as critics accused Mrs Berg Eriksen, who is married to Premier League player Lars-Kristian Eriksen, of being insensitive to other mothers who may not lose weight as fast as she did.

A blogger wrote:

"In my eyes, this picture is wildly provocative. Not just because I'm the chubby girl who's envious of her petite figure, but because I began to despise my own body when I was about twelve."

Some folks like doubt if it's possible to get back in shape after 4 days while some others think it's just an inconsiderate show off.

Mrs Berg Eriksen replied to her critics on Facebook, saying:

"I let out the picture because I'm proud of myself and my body for something as tough as a pregnancy / birth, and I think all mothers, regardless of the body shall be."

The head of women's clinic at the Norwegian National Hospital also backed the footballer's wife by saying that new mothers must understand that every body responded differently to pregnancy and that is was not productive to compare to other women.

Would you agree that it's possible for women to get back in shape right after delivery? I'm not a woman so I'll let the ladies have their say on this one.

Not sure if Nairaland would permit that I post the picture. You can view it here.

He is a good man for coming out and saying he took his anger out on her. It would be nice to give her a financial advisor for her business, so she makes sound decisions. I understand now why he was angry and his points make a lot of sense, regarding the smoke and fumes from the cars not being safe for humans. He has great advisors, the young commissioners and other assistance are all the hope we have to get this country going. But the most important person is you the citizen, we must make them work! Responsible leaders can not lead irresponsible citizens, we must take the responsibility of leading this great country on our shoulders. Push your leaders to work for you! Don't be afraid to speak for truth and justice. A closed mouth never gets fed!

Wow...you couldn't have said it any better. One of the qualities of a good leader is the ability to listen. Someone else might allow their ego to take over and refuse to publicly apologize.

Health / Germany To Ban Plastic Surgery For Children And Minors by infonubia(m): 10:55pm On Dec 02, 2013
Germany’s next government will ban plastic surgery on children and minors unless it can be justified on medical grounds, according to reports on Monday.

The Frankfurter Rundschau newspaper reported that Chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservative bloc and the Social Democrats, who are set to form a coalition government, have agreed to start work on a ban next year.

Jens Spahn, health spokesman for the Christian Democratic Union told the Spiegel magazine: "Youth protection is also about protecting young people from the consequences of a wrong-headed beauty craze.

"Unnecessarily subjecting a young body which is still growing, to such a significant procedure can have dire consequences, both physically and mentally.

"I think it is completely unacceptable to give a 15-year-old a breast enlargement as a Christmas present. Therefore plastic surgery that is not necessary on medical grounds should be banned."

Around 10 percent of all plastic surgery operations in Germany are on people under 20, according to figures released last year by the CDU.

The parties also want to protect patients from poorly qualified plastic surgeons by defining the amount of training needed to do the job. This will include stating the level of qualification needed for a doctor to call themselves a plastic surgeon.

Survey results released at the end of October this year showed one in seven children between the age of nine and 14 had thought about the option of surgery to improve their looks. They included procedures such as a nose job and liposuction, according to the survey which asked 10,000 children.

I completely agree with the German government on this. At that age, it's a little too early to start getting cosmetic surgery, unless it's medically necessary.

Politics / Suspected Hezbollah Members Cleared Of Terror Charges In Nigeria by infonubia(m): 10:23pm On Nov 29, 2013
Three Lebanese nationals suspected of being Hezbollah members were cleared of terrorism charges in Nigeria on Friday but one of the accused was convicted of a weapons offence and jailed for life.

Mustapha Fawaz, Abdallah Thahini and Talal Ahmad Roda were arrested in May after the discovery of an arms cache in a residence in the northern Nigerian city of Kano.

They were accused of plotting attacks against Western and Israeli targets in Nigeria but denied the accusations.

Federal High Court Judge Adeniyi Adetokunbo Ademola said Hezbollah "is not an international terrorist organisation in Nigeria" and therefore membership is not criminal.

He said there was "no evidence" that the group was planning an attack or had received "terrorism training" as the prosecution alleged.

All three men were also acquitted of money laundering charges.

But Roda was found guilty of conspiracy to import weapons into the country and sentenced to life imprisonment.

Defence lawyer for all three men Ahmed Raji told reporters after the hearing: "We are happy and slightly not comfortable with respect to the third accused (Roda).

"The most important thing is that the grave aspect of the charges, that is terrorism, was knocked out. We are happy about that."

Raji said he would consult with Roda about a possible appeal against his conviction and sentence and added: "Speaking for myself, I think an appeal is worthwhile."

The trial featured several unexpected twists, including a testimony from Roda that an extremist cell in Nigeria had plotted to assassinate the Saudi ambassador.

In August, Fawaz testified that he had been harshly interrogated by Israeli security agents after his arrest.

He said the grilling was carried out by "six Israeli Mossad agents and one masked white man" who were primarily concerned with his contacts in Lebanon and demanded details of where weapons were stored in his home country.

Thahini testified that he collapsed after being denied sleep for five days in a similar interrogation by purported Israeli agents.

Israel raised concerns over alleged efforts by Hezbollah members to plan attacks in west Africa after the group was arrested.

Fawaz owns a popular amusement park in the capital Abuja called Wonderland, which the court ordered should be re-opened after the ruling.

He and Thahini were immediately released while Fawaz was escorted away in handcuffs, an AFP reporter in the court said.

Nigerian intelligence agents escorted journalists to a property in Kano on May 30 and showed them a bunker where a massive haul of weapons had been stored.

The spy chief in Kano, Bassey Etang, described the room as a "Hezbollah armoury" -- a statement that raised eyebrows among some analysts.

He said investigations were needed to uncover potential links between the "Hezbollah cell" and Boko Haram, the extremist Islamist group that has killed thousands in northern Nigeria since 2009.

There had previously never been any discussion of a connection between the powerful Lebanese Shiite movement and the Nigerian insurgents and experts voiced strong doubts that such ties existed.

The court verdict is a fresh blow to Nigeria's main intelligence branch, the Department of State Services, which in September claimed that Boko Haram attacked troops outside a government building in Abuja.

Subsequent evidence, however, suggested the clash involved security officers and a group of squatters.

Nigeria, Africa's most populous country, is home to a sizeable Lebanese population, including in the mainly Muslim north.

Foreign Affairs / Black Friday Bargains Result In Outbreaks Of Violence Across The US by infonubia(m): 9:04pm On Nov 29, 2013

It's puzzling how people can quickly turn violent over a good Black Friday deal. Shopping at some stores quickly escalated into a free-for-all fight.

Stabbings, shootings and brawls have broken out in stores across the U.S. as shoppers scramble for the best Black Friday bargains.

A Virginia man was stabbed in a row over a parking space, a Las Vegas shopper has been shot in the leg by a man stealing his newly-bought television, and police have opened fire on an alleged shoplifter as he fled from a Chicago store.

Shoppers have also filmed violent scenes at several Walmart stores and posted the startling footage to YouTube, revealing the madness that has become a tradition the day after Thanksgiving.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fU0b1N-3AY0

In one of the most violent incidents, a Las Vegas shopper was walking to an apartment complex after buying a big-screen television when a suspect approached him and fired a warning shot so that he dropped the device.

The thief allegedly took the television to a nearby vehicle where another suspect was waiting and, as he loaded it inside, the victim tried to get the gadget back. The suspect then shot him in the leg.

The victim was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. No description has been released for the vehicle or suspects and an investigation is ongoing.

Police in Virginia also reported a stabbing after two men got into a fight in the car park over a space at a Walmart store in Tazewell County around 6.30pm on Thursday.

bloggernaija: Widow or no widow.
The instructions/rules/ law was simple enough.
Why can't Nigerians obey simple instructions?
Why do we behave like animal?

From overloaded lorries,
To drunk unlicensed driver,
To roadside traders encroaching on the highway ,
Siren blaring bigman aka stupid politicians.

The next minute ,they will start complaining about bad government disregarding the fact that the government is mirroring our own personal bad behaviour.

Poverty is not an excuse.
Neither should the law develop eyes because she is a WIDOW.

The government is doing the job it was elected to do and our
Uncivilised people are talking about MERCY .
Yes ,the language was bad
But he had to personally set an example.

MY TAKE IS THAT NIGERIANS ARE SO ISED TO LAWLESSNES THAT IT HAS BECOME THE BEW NORMAL.

NOW FOR THOSE WHO ARE IGNORANT OF THE ADMINISTRATION OF THE WESTERN REGION AND THE MIDWEST,
WIDOW OR NO WIDOW,
THIS WOMAN HAVE BEEN CHARGED TO COURT ,HEAVILY FINED AND HER GOODS SIEZED .
WHEN DID IT BECOME A CRIME TO ENFORCE THE LAW?

Please spare me all that Western region talk...The governor of a State in the western world would not tell a widow to go and die! That will be the end of his political career!

You are talking about being charged and heavily fined. Despite all the laws here in America, people still break them and they get penalized (if they are caught). But NEVER will a law enforcement officer publicly tell a widow to 'go an die' talk more of a governor.

People break the law in Western states as well. Do you know how many people have died due to gun violence? How many people get ticketed for breaking traffic laws? Let me bring it close to home a little; the recent killing of the Nigerian lady in Ohio, isn't that breaking the law? Don't come here and tell us only Nigerians disregard the law. Disregarding the law is not even an excuse to treat a fellow human like the governor treated that woman.

What Oshiomole did is no different than what bullies do in the Western world. Bullies use words like 'Go and die.' And words are powerful, they are seeds that germinate in the mind and influence our decision, character, and outlook towards life.

Point of correction, being merciful does not equate being uncivilized. Ever heard about "temper justice with mercy?"

The Governor might be within his right to cease the woman's goods but he's DEFINITELY wrong for telling the widow to go and die especially considering the fact that the governor is also a widower.

Remember, all Mitt Romney had to do to loose the election was say he didn't care about the 47% who wouldn't take personal responsibility and care for their lives.

Last week Friday is one of those days I wish I could relive. Actually, what I really need is a time machine that would take me back to last week so I can fix a few things. Have you seen the movie Inception starring Leonardo DiCaprio? If you haven't, you are sleeping on a bicycle. I command you to go watch it! By force, by fire! I'm just kidding. You definitely should see the movie if you haven't. A quick warning - watching the movie is like taking a Calculus+Differential Equations class! If you are like me, you might have to watch it more than once to get a full gist of what's going on. Anyways, I'd love to go back to last week Friday to go plant some ideas in my head.

It was my work Friday (I'm off work every other Friday) and the day started very well. It was just the perfect Houston morning temperature for this time of the year. I barely woke up to make it into work right on time. I sped up my regular morning routine and got ready for work. I couldn't eat breakfast but my wife was gracious enough to have packed my lunch the previous night. I got my stuff, gave her a good bye kiss, grabbed my lunch box, jumped in car, and off I went.

I work in downtown Houston, a good forty-five minutes drive from the house, barring any traffic. Rather than make that long drive, I opted for the Park & Ride - as the name suggests, you park your car and get a bus ride to downtown.

The weather forecast had indicated that it was going to get chilly towards to later part of the day so I had my jacket. On getting to the park and ride, I had two choices with my keys, keep it in one of the pockets of my jacket or by the side of my lunch box. I chose the latter. When I'm at work I like to free myself of any heavy items on me. I remove my wrist watch, keys, and bracelet, and I put them all on my computer desk. To reduce the risk of forgetting the keys, I leave it by my lunch box since it's not on me and I don't have to take it out.

Work went well, a very quiet Friday as usual. I was able to get a lot done. By noon I was so ready to get the weekend started. By 4pm, the work day was officially over, I grabbed all my items, put on my jacket and headed for the bus-stop.

As I stepped out of the office building, I was hit with some extremely chilled wind. It was unusually cold (at least for Houston weather) that evening. I put on my hoody, buttoned up my jacket and hung my lunch box around my shoulder. I didn't have winter gloves so I had to put my hands in the pockets of my jacket to keep warm as I hurried across the street to catch the bus home.

The ride home was nice. The bus was warm and I had time to check on my Twitter timeline, see how many visitors we've had on InfoNubia, and respond to some comments. The driver must have been very cold too as he slightly hit the curbs on two occasions when he made turns. The ladies seated behind me laughed away as the amateur driver struggled with a sharp turn.

Eventually we made it back to the park and ride around 5:20pm and as I walked towards the car, I reached for the side of the lunch box. Lo and behold....the keys to my intensely beautiful Bentley (in my mind...lol) was gone! I dashed back into the bus, did a quick check around my seat but I didn't find my keys. By this time, it had started to rain and the temperature further dropped.

In the split of a second, I replayed my day, trying to make sense of how I could have misplaced the keys. I knew I needed to get back to downtown. I thought about calling my wife who was back home by then. She could come get me with her car. There was only one problem - she misplaced her phone the day before!

Normally, the overly meticulous Segun would have made a big deal about the missing phone. "How could you loose your phone? You know that's the only way I can reach you while I'm at work. What if there's an emergency and our daughter's school needs to reach you? What if....what if..." The list goes on. This time, I chose to RESPOND not REACT. I was unusually calm about the phone loss, hoping that it would be found when she goes back to the school library. Unfortunately, no one had found it or turned it in.

So there I was at the park and ride, freezing up inside. Eventually, I called a friend who wasn't too far away. He came to pick me up and we headed back downtown to find the keys. Needless to say, I didn't find them. I was disappointed as we headed back home.

Right there, Francesca Battistelli's song "This is the stuff" just kept playing in my head. It was the perfect song to describe how I felt. In fact, its playing as I type this. It was like she wrote the song for my wife and me. "I lost my keys in the great unknown and call me please 'cause I can't find my phone..."

I had to call a tow truck to tow my car home and I'll be towing it to the dealership today to have a new key programmed for it.

I wrote this post to share a part of what transpired over the weekend and to say I'm really proud of how I handled the situation. I could have made a big deal about it, fuss and do all sorts but that wouldn't find the key. Rather, it would build up toxins in my body that could eventually make me fall sick. I chose to RESPOND and not REACT. It's Thanksgiving week and no situation is going to steal my joy! AIN'T NOBODY GOT TIME FO' THAT!!

That song by Francesca really kept me grounded. Just knowing that in the middle of all these unpleasant situations, I can still count my blessings and know that God's got us. Big deal...I lost my car keys. How about someone who doesn't own a car? How about folks that own cars but can't drive them because of an illness? Or folks who can't afford to pay their phone bills and the phone is as good as missing.

Bottom line is, because I RESPONDED to the situation, I was able to think straight, come up with a plan to replace the missing keys, and continue with life like nothing happened. Of course, it's costing some $$$ to get back on track but that's okay. Money can always be recovered but it fails in comparison to joy and peace of mind.

Dear reader, I'd like to encourage you to be thankful in whatever situation life throws at you. The face that you haven't lost it all is enough reason to be thankful. Choose to respond to situations rather than react. By responding, you think clearly, make better decisions, and maintain your homeostasis (a relative state of internal stability).

I've got so much to be thankful for - family, friends, my InfoNubia family, work, health, and life in general.

Meanwhile, my keys are still stuck in limbo. I've called the Metro bus lost and found office, talked to my office building security and all the nine yards, no one has found or returned the keys. All you kidnappers hoping to kidnap my beautiful Bentley...what are you still waiting for Oya, somersault by fire!

I leave you with the video of "This is the Stuff" by Francesca Battistelli as I look forward to reading your comments. It's okay to laugh at me...feel free to indulge in laughter, its a good medicine for the soul.

omonla555: who says they are the longest?
Do you know of a longer record? Well, the article states that they are the longest in the U.S. I don't think there are lots of marriages that can top that. And that is mostly because one spouse might have died before they get to that point.

Some serious but funny post. I'd agree that the comment was too bashful on America and he went off tangent.

Politics / Getting To Our Destinations - The Nigerian Transportation System by infonubia(m): 2:06am On Nov 26, 2013
As I got to the bus stop and saw the number of people waiting for cabs, I knew I had to be smart if I was going to leave there early. After waiting for about 15 minutes, I got lucky and got in a cab. We had barely moved for ten minutes when we got held up in traffic. It was becoming a norm on this particular side of my town; at any time during the day, you are expected to spend at least an extra 30 minutes in traffic before getting to your destination. This got me wondering if there are more cars on the road or is everyone just in a hurry to get to their destinations?

After about five minutes in the traffic, my cab driver started looking for ways to cut through the traffic like they always do. He kept this up for a while and seemed to be pulling it off as he got ahead of so many cars. He had just successfully gotten ahead of a trailer when suddenly there was a big bang from behind, then another! Then another!! The cab plunged forward I screamed as i looked back no doubt the trailer had hit us. In seconds the windscreen on the back of the cab shattered.

In a twinkle of an eye the driver had gotten down alongside other passengers and the angry mob was a terrible sight to behold. I didn't wait to see the end as I was in a hurry. I need not tell you that getting to my destination that day proved to be a herculean task even after boarding another cab. I also witnessed other minor accidents on the way.

It is very clear and certain that we need improved transport systems in Nigeria, as well as lesser cars on the road. When I was in primary school, my teacher thought me about several means of transportation. I got the mindset that all was functional but as I grew older I realized that only a few existed. Road transport being the major in Nigeria. To make matters worse the roads are poorly maintained and are often cited as the cause for the country’s high rate of traffic fatalities. Despite the fact that Nigeria has the largest road network in West Africa.

Not to talk of drivers especially public transport drivers, who not only drink before driving and pose with fake licence but can't also read road signs!

Air transport which was considered to have an advantage over other means of transportation has its credibility at stake in Nigeria, owing from the recent incessant airplane crashes which has caused loss of lives and properties. One wonders if Air transport in Nigeria will someday stop bringing sorrow, fear and jeopardy to Nigerians.

While government continues to make these means of transportation easier and less risky, other means of transportation should be fully explored. Apart from road and air transport, other means of transportation such as rail and water.

In other countries, for instance America, India and China rail transport is being employed efficiently especially for long distance journeys. Nigeria has rail lines which have been abandoned. If only government wouldn't fail Nigerians this time, if only the establishment of more rails for instance the proposed west –east railway lines with correct gauge will be funded and trains get working the pressure on roads which are presently being overused and not adequately maintained will be reduced.

Water transport which is being used occasionally should be further explored as well. The inland waterways should be improved; the dredging of the river Niger and Benue should not be put aside as this will be an excellent means to set the use of water transport in motion in areas where they are best suitable.

Also, improving the conditions of the existing roads and constructing bridges in some parts of the country will go a long way. The issue of demarcation of federal roads and state roads shouldn't pose a stumbling block to the maintenance of roads as the case has always been. Maintenance of roads should be left to the state government since they are closer to the society and the people.

A country’s transportation network really goes a long way in determining its progress and the safety of its people.
