HealthThis Tooth Sensor Prevents You From Lying To Your Dentist!!! by infonubia(op): 8:54pm On Aug 01, 2013
If you are like me, you'd dread going to the dentist. They always find something! Either you aren't brushing properly or you need to floss some more.

However, to accurately fix your teeth, dentists need to know what you put in your mouth. Candy, coffee, booze, and all those things can have damaging effects on your teeth.

A team of researchers at National Taiwan University's Department of Science and Information Engineering and Department of Electrical Engineering created a new sensor that lets your dentist know what you're doing without you having to own up to it. The sensor fits in your mouth and can tell when you are eating, drinking, coughing, sneezing, and speaking with 93.8 percent accuracy.

For now, the sensor is embedded in an artificial tooth, or fitted into dentures or braces. It records and identifies each activities and the information can be conveyed to your dentist. The research team still uses a wired connection to both retrieve and power the sensor. They hope to be able to add a tiny battery and Bluetooth receiver to wirelessly transmit data to a phone.

I hope I don't ever get to use one of these - just another reason to fear the dentist.

FamilyOhio Kidnapper Castor Sentenced To Life In Prison by infonubia(op): 7:14pm On Aug 01, 2013
Ariel Castro, the Cleveland man who abducted, raped, and held three women captive for about 11 years, was sentenced to life in prison on Thursday by an Ohio State judge.

Judge Michael Russo of Cuyahoga County imposed the prison sentence after one of Castro's victim, 32-year-old Michelle Knight, gave an emotional testimony how the former school bus driver put her through a life of hell.

"I served 11 years of hell. Now your hell is just beginning," Knight said of Castro in a statement read to the court.

Castro pleaded guilty last week to hundreds of criminal charges to avoid the possibility of the death penalty.

Cleveland kidnapper Ariel Castro admitted at the hearing on Thursday that he was a sick man but said he is not the monster described by prosecutors.

Castro delivered a rambling statement to the court that he makes no excuses for his behavior, which he said was "wrong."

Do you think Castro got what he deserved? I wish he could get more than life in prison.

Baby Jasleen is the new record holder for "heaviest baby" in Germany. She was delivered naturally at the University Hospital in Leipzig on July 26, weighing at 13.47 pounds, and 22.6 inches long. Before her, the heaviest baby in Germany weighed 13 pounds at birth.

Jasleen, however, isn't the heaviest baby born this year. I posted the story of George King, the British baby born in March and weighed 15 pounds, 7 ounces at birth. He was also delivered naturally.

These weight pale when compared to the heaviest baby ever born. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the worlds's biggest ever baby was born to Anna Bates of Canada in 1879 weighing 23 pounds.

Health68-year-old Man Born Blind Sees For The First Time After Surgery by infonubia(op): 5:19am On Jul 27, 2013
Advancement in modern medical science changed the story of 68-year-old Pierre-Paul Thomas, a Canadian who was born blind.

Two years ago, the Montreal man fell down a flight of stairs, fracturing facial bones, including those around his eye sockets. During the recuperation process at Montreal General Hospital, plastic surgeon Lucie Lessard asked a casual question: "Do you want us to fix your eyes, too?" Two simple cataract removal operations later, Thomas could see.

Here's how The Montreal Gazette reported the story:

When Pierre-Paul Thomas was a boy, he could not play hockey with his brothers and it broke his heart.

For Thomas had been born blind. He endured the triple misfortune of suffering from congenital nystagmus — a condition in which the eyes move from side to side involuntarily — along with damaged optic nerves and cataracts bulging behind his pupils.

It was the 1940s — long before medicare became available — and Thomas grew up in a family of nine brothers and sisters in the town of Saint-Rémi-d’Amherst, more than 100 kilometres north of Montreal.

His brothers and sisters were forbidden from calling him blind for fear of their mother whacking their behinds. So Thomas learned to “see” with his fingers. When he grew older, he repaired bikes, and for his first full-time job, he kneaded dough in a bakery.

Thomas could make out the rough, unfocused outlines of a person in front of him. His world was always grey, full of shadows, and he walked with a white cane that he slid from side to side in front of him.

But two years ago, at the age of 66, Thomas fell down the stairs in a St-Henri apartment building and fractured the bones of his thin face, including those around his eye sockets. He was rushed to the Montreal General Hospital with severe swelling around his eyes.

A team of doctors operated on him and repaired those bones. One day, months later, he was examined by a plastic surgeon at the Montreal General, Lucie Lessard, renowned for her skills in micro-suturing.

During the consultation about repairing his scalp, Lessard asked matter-of-factly:

“Oh, while we’re at it, do you want us to fix your eyes, too?”

Thomas was dumbfounded. Fix my eyes?

And so during two dates in February, Thomas underwent surgery at the Montreal General to remove the cataracts from his eyes. The operations, to put it mildly, were a success, for Thomas could now truly see for the first time in his life.

His shadowy grey world receded to reveal colours he had never before seen: Red, yellow and even dark green, which previously was only a dull black. Snowbanks, which he had perceived as a light shade of grey, were now luminous white.

He took a taxi for the disabled to visit his sister Giselle in Ahuntsic. During the ride, he gazed at the wonder of snowflakes falling, water trickling down the windows of the cab.

He stood outside his sister’s front door and rang the bell. Giselle answered right away.

“Pierrot, you still can’t see, can you?” she asked. Her neighbour, Madame Verreault, stood beside her.

“On the contrary,” he replied, smiling. “I see two beautiful women.”

Tears rolled down the women’s cheeks. Tears rolled down Thomas’s cheeks, too, but his sister reminded him to stop crying right that instant, because the doctors had warned that he had to keep water out of his eyes in the days after the operation.

When spring arrived, Thomas saw the tulips bloom. And he discovered something that no one had ever pointed out to him before: tree buds, simple tree buds.

“It’s like I’m a child all over again,” he said in his St-Henri apartment on a sunny Thursday afternoon.

He was sitting at the kitchen table, the same one where he struggled to do the crossword puzzles by taking out a loupe, placing it on the page, and straining through it with his right eye. He grabbed the book of crossword puzzles and held it up.

“It’s red,” he said, taking delight in describing the cover. “The title is in white. The price sticker is orange.”

But his new-found vision scares him sometimes. When he stepped out onto his sixth-floor balcony for the first time and looked down, he was seized with vertigo. He still shuffles up and down his hallway apartment brushing his hands against the walls for guidance.

“It’s very complicated for him,” his sister said. “He has sensorial memory because of the use of his fingertips, but his visual memory is only now developing.”

Depth perception is a challenge. And so is paying for things at the corner store. He recently handed a cashier a $10 bill when he should have given him a $5.

“Look at the numbers, Pierrot,” Giselle, who was in the dépanneur, advised. “You can see the numbers on the bills now.”

Dr. Dev Cheema, director of the ophthalmology clinic at the Montreal General, noted that cataracts are still the main cause of blindness globally, but in North America, it’s macular degeneration. Even though most people develop cataracts with old age, Cheema said that children, even babies, can develop them as well.

Thomas might have been able to see at a young age, even with his damaged optic nerves and the nystagmus, but it was the cataracts that tipped the balance and made him legally blind, Cheema explained.

“All we had to do was remove the cataracts and he was able to see,” he said. “It feels great to do something like this. There’s always a positive story to tell when it comes to ophthalmology.”

Thomas will never be able to see perfectly, and doctors won’t be able to treat his nystagmus or repair his damaged optic nerves.

“But I’m happy,” he said. “A happy man. Say thank you for me to the Montreal General. They've given me my life back.”

Foreign AffairsProtests Erupt In Tunisia After Assassination Of Opposition Leader by infonubia(op): 3:36pm On Jul 26, 2013
Following the assassination of Mohammed Brahmi, a well-known leftwing secular opposition leader who openly criticizes Ennahda, the ruling Islamist party in Tunisia, thousands of Tunisians took to the streets to protest the gruesome killing.

Mr Brahmi, the leader of the opposition Movement of the People party, was gunned down outside his home in front of his wife and youngest daughter. It was the second assassination of an opposition politician this year, coming just five months after the killing of Chokri Belaid, a prominent secular MP.

Soon after his death on Thursday, thousands of people took to the streets to demonstrate around Tunis. Outside the hospital where Brahmi was taken a crowd that included his daughter, Belkaeis (pictured above), mourned the politician's killing. Protesters in the region also set fire to Ennahda offices while the powerful UGTT labor confederation called for a general strike on Friday.

Brahmi's killing appears to have many similarities to the assassination of Belaid, who was gunned down outside his house by radical Islamists that remain on the loose, and his family also accused Ennahda of being behind his death.

"It was them who killed them," his sister Chhiba Brahmi told the AFP news agency. "Our family had the feeling that Mohammed would suffer the same fate as Chokri Belaid."

Ennahda released a statement calling Brahmi's death a "cowardly and despicable crime" and urging the government to "arrest those who committed this crime and reveal those behind them who have targeted the stability of the country."

German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle condemned Brahmi's killing and urged Tunisia to continue with its democratic transition. The United States called it a "cowardly act," with State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf asking for a "transparent and professional investigation."

Foreign AffairsHigh Speed Passenger Train Crash Kills 77 In Spain by infonubia(op): 1:29pm On Jul 25, 2013
A high-speed passenger train derailed as it hurtled around a curve in northwestern Spain on Wednesday, killing 77 people and injuring more than 100, CNN reported officials as saying.

At least 73 people died at the scene, and four others died while hospitalized, said María Pardo Ríos, spokeswoman for the Galicia regional supreme court. In Spain, judges typically record deaths that take place outside of hospitals.

More than 20 injured victims remained in critical condition early Thursday, said Agustin Hernandez Fernandez of the Galicia infrastructure ministry.

Flames burst out of one train car as another car was snapped in half, following the crash. Rescue crews and fellow passengers pulled out bodies through broken windows and pried open doors as stunned survivors looked on.

State railway Renfe said the train crashed on a curve several kilometres from the train station in the city of Santiago de Compostela.

The train had 218 passengers aboard and was nearing the end of a six-hour trip from Madrid to the town of Ferrol in northwest Spain when it derailed at 8:41 pm local time, Wednesday, the railway said.

Nairaland GeneralInspirational Story of NASCAR Engineer Who Was Born Without Arms by infonubia(op):
A few weeks ago, I posted a video of Nick Vujicic where he talked about about getting back up again no matter how many times you fall.

Today, I'm posting another inspirational video about Richie Parker, a 30-year-old Beaufort, South Carolina native who was born without arms, yet he is a top chassis and body component engineer for Hendrick Motorsports, the most winning organization in NASCAR.

I'll spare you the details of Richie's life and let you watch the video but he said something that is very profound.
"I don't think there are a whole lot of things in life that I can't do, just things I haven’t done yet."

If this doesn't inspire you, I don't know what else will.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qiLDMBDPCEY

What are those things you've dread doing? Those long forgotten dreams. I dare you to pursue those dreams. I dare you to do the seemingly impossible!

If Richie did not consider his shortcomings, but went on to study engineering, and do things that some full-bodied men wouldn't, you really have no excuse.

Remember, when your mind is made up to succeed, there's no stopping you. The only impediment to achieving your goals is YOU. Dream big and pursue your dreams. Every challenge you face on your way to achieving your dreams takes you one step closer to where you want to be.

Finally, I'll leave you with one of my favorite quotes. "At the counter of success, there are no bargains. A price has to be paid and paid in full."

Be motivated!

Foreign AffairsJudge Sentences Woman To Spend Next Five Christmases In Jail by infonubia(op): 12:57pm On Jul 24, 2013
An Ohio judge ordered a woman to spend the next five Christmases in jail as part of her sentence for issuing state ID cards and driver’s licenses to immigrants who entered the country illegally.

The unusual sentence for Betina Young, 44, of Columbus, is what Judge Michael J. Holbrook calls a "Holbrook Holiday."

The judge of Franklin County Common Pleas Courthouse asks the convicted defendants for their favorite holidays and then sentences to them to spend that day in prison. Holbrook said he got the idea from federal court judges who will sometimes sentence individuals to jail on every federal holiday throughout the year.

In addition to five years probation and a $3,000 fine for tampering with state records Young must also go to jail each Christmas for the next five years, Holbrook said.

If she violates probation, she could go to prison for 15 years.

That's some odd sentence.

Christianity EtcTo Tithe Or Not To Tithe - True Church Perspective On Tithing by infonubia(op): 1:33am On Jul 21, 2013
Recently, I had a discussion with a few friends about tithing and giving. It was interesting how we had a difference in opinion though we attend the same church.

To be clear, I believe in giving because it's a prove of love. I can't honestly say I love my wife without giving her gifts, attention, and my time. Likewise, I can't say I love God without giving my time and money to support His work in the church and beyond. Remember, "For God so love the world that He gave..."

However, many Christians have conflicting opinion on tithing. Some folks believe the tithe should always be paid. Malachi 3: 8-12 is often quoted as the reason why we should pay tithe. I heard some say "you are going to hell if you don't tithe." What a bold statement! Their reason for this is that if you don't tithe, you are robbing God and no robber will enter the Kingdom of God unless he/she repents.

I believe it's important to have a clear understanding of why you are giving and how you should give. God loves a cheerful giver. Giving should be out of love, not out of fear of the devourer.

An InfoNubia reader sent this audio recording by Pastor G Craige Lewis about tithing and giving. I'd love to get other reader's opinion on the topic.

I must warn you that the message is about 29 minutes long but it is worth every minute spent listening to it. Have an open mind and be sure to share your thoughts in the comment section.

Do you agree with this message? If you tithe, why do you do it? If not, why don't you? Share your opinion.

Foreign AffairsManhunt Photos Of Boston Marathon Bombing Suspect Emerge by infonubia(op): 5:08am On Jul 19, 2013
Photos showing the moment the Boston Marathon bombing suspect was captured have been released by a Massachusetts State Police officer angry at the Rolling Stone magazine cover "glamorizing" the alleged attacker.

Police Sgt Sean Murphy released photos of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev taken when he was captured in Watertown, Massachusetts.

The images, given to Boston magazine, Tsarnaev emerging from the backyard boat he used to hide from authorities, after a street battle that left his brother and alleged accomplice dead. He can be seen raising his hands in the air as he leaves the boat, blood pouring down his face. In several of the photos, a red sniper bead can be seen on his face.

"The truth is that glamorizing the face of terror is not just insulting to the family members of those killed in the line of duty, it also could be an incentive to those who may be unstable to do something to get their face on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine," Sgt Murphy told the publication.

On the online version of the Rolling Stone article about Tsarnaev, the editors added a statement saying: "Our hearts go out to the victims of the Boston Marathon bombings and our thoughts are always with them and their families.

"The cover story we are publishing this week falls within the traditions of journalism and Rolling Stone's long-standing commitment to serious and thoughtful coverage of the most important political and cultural issues of our day.

"The fact that Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is young, and in the same age group as many of our readers, makes it all the more important for us to examine the complexities of this issue and gain a more complete understanding of how a tragedy like this happens."

Technology MarketThis Pen Can Detect Spelling Errors!! by infonubia(op): 7:20pm On Jul 18, 2013
My mum was an English teacher back in Nigeria and I learnt early enough from when she graded students scripts that spelling errors were good enough reasons to fail your English test or exam. Technology today might have taking a bold step to eradicate such reasons as a pen has been developed to detect spelling errors while writing.

The Lernstift pen packs motion sensors that analyze your chicken scratch — you can use the pen with standard paper or simply write words in mid-air — and a vibrating motor that buzzes when the pen detects errors. Future versions will sport a Wi-Fi connection to be leveraged by an open development platform that people can use to create specialized apps for the pen as it connects to various devices.

Doug Aamoth (Technology editor for TIME Magazine) mentions that the pen exists in 2 modes: Calligraphy and Orthography. Calligraphy mode senses "if a letter is written wrong or illegibly" according to the company, and then vibrates once to alert the user to the error. With the Orthography setting " the pen vibrates once for a misspelled word and twice to point out grammatical errors in a sentence". The pen simply alerts the user that an error has been identified; it is then up to the user to figure out the problem and correct it. It is said to be a teaching pen rather than a spell checker.

Foreign AffairsA Short Biography Of Nelson Mandela As He Turns 95 by infonubia(op): 5:13pm On Jul 18, 2013
Nelson Mandela turns 95 today. Trust South Africans to turn out in their numbers at the Pretoria hospital where he is being treated.

Wave after musical wave rang out, as choirs, political groups, schoolchildren and onlookers arrived one after another, dancing, gyrating and laughing, each with their own loud musical tribute to the man they see as the one who brought them freedom.

What better way to celebrate his extraordinary life and impact on racial equality in South Africa than to watch a short biography.

While Mandela is often referred to as the "father of the nation," he had humble roots: He was born Rolihlahla Mandela in 1918 in a small village. When he began his British education at age 7, his teacher gave him the name Nelson.

By the time he was elected president in 1994, after having spent 27 years in prison for his fight against apartheid, it had been more than 300 years since blacks in South Africa had been allowed to vote. We learned a few things about the man affectionately known around the world as Madiba, and you might, too. Enjoy!

Foreign AffairsFood Poisoning Kills 21 Children In India by infonubia(op): 1:12pm On Jul 17, 2013
At least 21 children died and more than two dozen others were sick after eating a free school lunch that was tainted with insecticide, Indian officials said Wednesday.

It was not immediately clear how chemicals ended up in the food in a school in the eastern state of Bihar. One official said the food may not have been properly washed before it was cooked.

Police said the children, aged eight to 11, fell ill after consuming a lunch of rice, soybean and legumes on Tuesday. The school provided free meals under the Mid-Day Meal Scheme, which involves 120 million children.

In addition to the 21 children who died, another 26 children and the school cook were hospitalized, he said. Ten of them were in serious condition.

The exact cause of the deaths will be known only after the post-mortem examinations and food sample tests, doctors and state officials said.

Dozens of residents took to the streets in Chapra, pelting a police station with stones and setting ablaze buses and other vehicles, television channels showed.

"We are currently treating 27 children here," said R.K. Singh, medical superintendent at the children's hospital in the state capital, Patna. "Of them nine are in serious condition, 18 are stable."

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has ordered an inquiry into the incident and has offered 200,000 rupees ($3,400) to the families of those who have died, the state's food minister said.

Bihar is one of the most impoverished states in India, according to government data.

Foreign AffairsIs This A Case Of Double Standards In Florida? by infonubia(op): 6:29am On Jul 15, 2013
In the aftermath of the Trayvon/Zimmerman saga, a case that brought added attention to the issue of racial profiling and racism in the "Gods own country", "the land of the free"; in which many have said the law was manipulated to favor one skin color over the other.

I do have my personal convictions about this case and what really transpired; however, I respect the law and I believe in the legal system of the United States of America.

In the light of the events of the last couple of weeks, the case of a Florida woman who fired warning shots against her abusive husband and was sentenced to 20 years in prison also deserve some review.

In August of 2010, Marissa Alexander fired warning shots inside her home in an attempt to escape a brutal beating by her husband, against whom she has already taken out a protective order. WETV reports that circuit court Judge James Daniel handed down the sentence on Friday. Under Florida's mandatory minimum sentencing requirements, Alexander could not receive a lesser sentence, even though she has never been in trouble with the law before. Judge Daniel said the law did not allow for extenuating or mitigating circumstances to reduce the sentence below the 20-year minimum.

It is very logical to think that the "stand your ground" rule should apply to Marissa too if it was applied to the Zimmerman case. For all we know, the outcome of the Marissa confrontation was not even fatal. The "stand the ground" rule is based on the fact that one of the parties must "perceive" danger and can immediately retaliate in self defense. Marissa perceived danger and took steps to protect herself; just like Zimmerman was said to have perceived danger and took steps to protect himself.

Is this a case of double standards in Florida? Does the law deliberately favor a particular kind of people over the other? Is this peculiar to Florida or its just the reality of the American society?

Foreign AffairsPresident Obama's Statement On George Zimmerman Verdict by infonubia(op): 1:18am On Jul 15, 2013
President Barack Obama released a statement on Sunday following the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin.

Here's what the president said:

The death of Trayvon Martin was a tragedy. Not just for his family, or for any one community, but for America. I know this case has elicited strong passions. And in the wake of the verdict, I know those passions may be running even higher. But we are a nation of laws, and a jury has spoken. I now ask every American to respect the call for calm reflection from two parents who lost their young son. And as we do, we should ask ourselves if we’re doing all we can to widen the circle of compassion and understanding in our own communities. We should ask ourselves if we’re doing all we can to stem the tide of gun violence that claims too many lives across this country on a daily basis. We should ask ourselves, as individuals and as a society, how we can prevent future tragedies like this. As citizens, that’s a job for all of us. That’s the way to honor Trayvon Martin.
There's been an outpouring of emotion since the verdict was announced on Saturday and George Zimmerman was found not guilty in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin. On one side, there are those who believe verdict was just, and on another side, some believe the American justice system failed the Martin family.

The Justice Department also released a statement on the verdict:

As the Department first acknowledged last year, we have an open investigation into the death of Trayvon Martin. The Department of Justice's Criminal Section of the Civil Rights Division, the United States Attorney's Office for the Middle District of Florida, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation continue to evaluate the evidence generated during the federal investigation, as well as the evidence and testimony from the state trial. Experienced federal prosecutors will determine whether the evidence reveals a prosecutable violation of any of the limited federal criminal civil rights statutes within our jurisdiction, and whether federal prosecution is appropriate in accordance with the Department's policy governing successive federal prosecution following a state trial.
What do you think of both statements on the trial verdict?

Foreign AffairsJury Acquits George Zimmerman In The Death Of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin by infonubia(op): 3:23am On Jul 14, 2013
George Zimmerman is not guilty of the murder of Trayvon Martin, a Florida jury decided late Saturday.

The fact that Zimmerman fired the bullet that killed Martin was never in question, but the verdict means the six-person jury had reasonable doubt that the shooting amounted to a criminal act.

The verdict caps a case that has inflamed passions for well over a year, much of it focused on race and gun rights.

The six-person jury -- all women -- basically had three choices: to find Zimmerman guilty of second-degree murder; to find him guilty of the lesser charge of manslaughter; or to find him not guilty.

The jurors deliberated for 16½ hours total, including 13 on Saturday alone, before delivering its verdict.

Zimmerman smiled and then shook his lawyer's hands when he learned his fate. His parents, Robert and Gladys Zimmerman, were seated nearby, but Martin's parents were not in the courtroom.

8-month-old Xiao Bao was stabbed 90 times times in the face with scissors by his mother. His offence? Accidentally biting her during breastfeeding, police said.

The incident which happened in Xuzhou, eastern China, left Bao with more than 100 stitches after the brutal attack.

The infant who lives with his mother and two uncles, was found bleeding in the backyard by one of the uncles who quickly rushed him to the hospital.

It's not clear whether the mother was arrested or charged. There are reports that the local government is looking into whether the mom suffers from mental illness.

What a crazy world!

Foreign AffairsGeorge Zimmerman...what Happens Next? by infonubia(op): 9:39pm On Jul 12, 2013
Following closing arguments from the defense attorney and the rebuttal from a prosecutor, George Zimmerman's fate now entirely lies in the hands of the six women jurors selected to consider the evidence in the murder trial involving the shooting to death of Trayvon Martin.

The 29-year-old former neighborhood watch volunteer could face up to life in prison if convicted of second-degree murder for killing the 17-year-old Miami teenager on February 26, 2012. Zimmerman shot Martin as the two fought following a confrontation in the gated Sanford community where Zimmerman lives.

"Your verdict should not be influenced by feelings of prejudice, bias or sympathy," Seminole County Judge Debra Nelson told the panel, as she read the instructions. "Your verdict must be based on the evidence, and on the law contained in these instructions."

The judge told the jurors they can also consider the lesser charge of manslaughter, which carries a maximum penalty of 30 years.

Race has been one of the issues surrounding the trial. Some people belief race played a role in Zimmerman's actions since he is Hispanic and Martin was Black.

The jury's verdict is sure to elicit some reactions. Already, there are folks who do not trust the jurors to make the "right" decision, because of their racial makeup (five Whites an one Hispanic). Whichever way it turns out, at least one group will likely be unhappy.

I believe the jurors will make the best decision based the evidence provided. It's important to note that no matter how much evidence we read about or see in the news, these women have seen more evidence than we did. The sensitivity of the case also makes it difficult to pass a biased verdict (I hope).

Regardless of what the verdict turns out to be, this case has certainly drawn national (and international) attention to issues of race and gun laws while highlighting the sharp divisions over these issues in the United States.

Have Your Say

Based on what you've read or heard about the case, what do you think is likely to happen? What are your thoughts on the jury makeup?

HealthThe Dangers Of Postpartum Depression by infonubia(op): 9:17pm On Jul 10, 2013
I just read about a 35-year-old nursing mother who committed suicide few hours after dedicating her 3-months-old baby. The only reasonable explanation for such an act is Postpartum Depression, also known as postnatal depression. According to the report, the woman's husband noticed the signs of depression but it never occurred to him that she could take her life.

I was saddened by the news, so I decided to write this post to raise awareness, especially among the African community.

About 80% of new moms experience the "baby blues" in the first couple of weeks after childbirth, which are caused by hormonal changes that takes place in a woman's body after the birth of a child. Symptoms include irritability, crying spells, mood swings, trouble sleeping and sadness. These conditions are generally not serious and fades away quickly.

However, some moms experience a more severe, long-lasting form of these feelings known as Postpartum Depression. In addition to the symptoms mentioned earlier, it can also result in feeling of guilt or shame, withdrawal from friends and family, lack of joy, and difficulty bonding with the baby. It is usually treated by counseling and medication, but exercising, eating well, and getting enough rest can also help.

In rare cases, a woman may experience a severe form of depression known as Postpartum Psychosis. This condition is characterized by hallucinations, paranoia, irrational thoughts, and being a danger to oneself and the baby. This is an emergency that requires immediate medical attention because it can get worse and put the mother or others in danger.

It is important to understand that Postpartum Depression isn't a character flaw or a weakness. These changes can be caused by hormonal changes that occur after pregnancy. Any woman can get postpartum depression in the months after childbirth, stillbirth, or miscarriage.

Partners, friends, and family - your support during the first few months after pregnancy will go a long way to reduce the occurrence of Postpartum Depression.
