2027: Tinubu, Atiku, Obi, others must not underestimate Nigerians –Markafi

Former Kaduna State Governor and former Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Caretaker Committee, Senator Ahmed Mohammed Makarfi, has revealed that the 2027 general elections may spring up surprises in the way and manner Nigerians will vote. He also dismissed claims that he belongs to any faction within the party, insisting that his position is guided solely by respect for the rule of law and electoral regulations.

In this interview, he speaks on the lingering leadership crisis in the PDP, attempts to portray him and other party leaders as loyalists of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, among other issues.

As a strong stakeholder in PDP, what is the situation now in the party, because we have the Turaki camp and we have the Wike camp?

Right from the beginning, right from before the national convention, along with some other people, I held the belief that we should promote a give and take situation to avoid crisis. In certain situations, you cannot have it exactly the way you want it. Life’s quality is give and take; life is a give and take. So I am certainly not a factional person, I am a PDP person. What I work for is PDP, but I am also a lawful person. This matter is not about Wike or the new forum. It is about what, at any point in time, the law says, and it is not about your personal interpretation. It is about the interpretation of the regulator. If you are not happy with that interpretation, you go to court, and if the interpretation is changed, you abide by it. But if a regulator says this is the position, and you disagree with it, and you go and act on your own, you cannot set your own law and regulation. You are dealing with elections. All political parties, including PDP, must comply with the law and regulations. You cannot take yourself out and say you will do as you choose.

That, unfortunately, is the mistake some of us have made, those of us who have experience in this. I do not have a problem with people making leadership challenges. They have the right to do so until the matter is finally settled. I am not against that, but leadership challenges should not make party followers suffer.

There was a leadership challenge when I was chairman of the National Caretaker Committee, and we operated with a great sense of responsibility. At the time, INEC recognised my leadership. Every chapter of the party, for matters of election, whether they were with Makarfi or with Modu Sheriff, had to deal with whoever INEC recognised. When INEC recognised Modu Sheriff, every matter of election was referred to him. Even if people came to us and objected, we would say we were not going to waste their time and that they should deal with him instead. We had the leadership issue and the operational issue, which had to do with the law and regulation, and that is why nobody suffered in relation to elections during that time. That is also how it was easy to reconcile after the final judgment. We did not separate, we did not create or divide structures, we did not make people go and vote against the recognised position. We did not go against any subsisting position of INEC. If we all love the party and our party people, we should say everybody must comply with the directive while we continue with our legal issues on leadership. If we succeed, fine and good. If we do not, we should not make people suffer. But what is happening now is that if our directive is tied to a particular leadership, and another group makes people go through a process we will not accept, then at the end of the day you have made party members suffer, which is avoidable. The way we are going, either PDP ends up without valid candidates at all, or one set of so called candidates loses their money and wastes their time. If we love the party, why should we take that path? We should not take that path.

There is nothing wrong with pursuing the legal challenges over leadership. If, at the end of the day, there is a legal pronouncement, everybody will accept it. But in the meantime, we should not place party men and women in a position where they will be injured, and the way things stand now, some of them definitely will be, because of the actions of some of us. At the end of the day, reconciliation is the way out. Right from day one, before the convention in Ibadan, everybody who knows me knows that some of us favoured reconciliation, give and take. My position has not changed. A lot of water has passed under the bridge. It would have been better to reconcile then than now, but let us do it for the future of the PDP. There are things we cannot undo, but there are equally things we can do.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, is a member of the PDP, and today he is working for President Tinubu. We have also heard that you and Sule Lamido are working for Wike. Can you clear up this issue?

I have clarified it. We are not with any individual. We are with the law. We cannot go against the law and what INEC recognises. If we did, we would be wasting our time. We are talking about elections; you must follow the law and what it requires. You cannot make your own law and your own regulations, otherwise you are not operating within Nigeria. If you do not like the law, challenge it, and when you get a positive judgment, fine. So, the suggestion that we are doing this because of somebody is not correct. It is simply because that is what the law currently recognises. Unless you want to leave the party and not participate, as long as you want to take part, you should know that, following the ruling of the court, INEC recognises only those elected at the Abuja convention. They are the only ones who can upload candidates to INEC. People in Kaduna have been patient with our leadership.

Do you think I would lead them in a direction where they cannot participate in the election simply because someone alleges I am with this or that person? Then I would have been irresponsible. If I failed to enable our people to participate validly in elections, I would have failed. Whether they win or lose is a different issue, but the whole essence of politics is participating in an election and winning. Why should I, because of an allegation that I am aligned with this person or that, lead my people in a manner that prevents their participation? So, it has nothing to do with anybody. It has to do with respect for the law and regulations existing at any particular point in time. Tomorrow it may change, and I will follow what it says then. There is nothing personal about it, but until it changes, I cannot be disobedient to the law and regulations.

You mentioned the minister being with the president. I have also said, as far as the presidential election is concerned, I do not believe we have a good chance. Opinions differ. States will vote differently among the candidates, and even within a particular state, people vote differently. So, what is the issue? If somebody wants to vote a certain way, who do you want them to vote for instead? As far as the presidential election is concerned, if I cannot stop you from doing what you want, you cannot stop me either. So what is the problem?

Sir, if that is the case, don’t you think it will divide the votes of Nigerians and work to the advantage of the incumbent?

Look, the votes will be divided among the candidates regardless of how many are contesting. Forget the numbers for a moment; why did the opposition not come together? I have read that in other countries, opposition parties come together. So why did the opposition here not do the same, so the votes would not be divided? We in the opposition have our own faults sometimes. It becomes a case of “it must be me.” When it comes to “it must be me,” then you are part of the problem. The opposition should have set personal ambition aside, come together, found a suitable figure, whoever that person may be, from the North or the South, and supported that person, consolidating around them. When you create a situation where the votes will be divided, then the votes will indeed be divided.

Sir, does the PDP still have a future?

Absolutely. Absolutely. Among all the political parties, I believe the PDP, because it is deep rooted and not built around any individual, has the brighter future. At the presidential election in 2027, we really do not have to look far to understand the reality. PDP members may vote differently among the other presidential candidates. That is the truth of the matter, and we cannot pretend otherwise. This is a developing situation, and there cannot be one uniform position. It is not possible, even within a single state, when we are talking about the presidential candidates. It depends on the engagement of all the other presidential candidates with all the players, so it is not possible the way things stand at the moment. That is the truth of the matter, but time will tell how this develops. It will be different in other states. When you come to state and other elections, the PDP will perform well in many places. People will largely vote for individuals. Of course, people have different reasons for voting. It is not one single reason. Some vote because of party affiliation, some vote based on religion or ethnicity, and some simply vote because they do not like somebody. So, voters have different reasons for choosing Mr A or Mr B, as the case may be. It is not something you can sit down and define neatly. Those in the race have a lot of work to do. Anybody who thinks he can sit back with victory already in the bag is underrating Nigerians. I have said as much as I can on the presidential election. But when it comes to governorship, Senate, and House of Representatives elections, we have a lot of chances in many places. We are also following events and assessing things. As time goes on, our chances will improve by the day.

There are those who think the next election may be rigged. Well, only a lazy mind would say from the outset that the election will be rigged. Why should you simply walk away from the election? Work to win, work to prevent rigging, but why go on to say things may not be equal? No, things are equal, except if we allow them to become unequal.

Sir, when Vice President Kashim Shettima came to Kaduna the other day and told you that you are wasting your time in the PDP, indirectly inviting you to the ruling APC, how did you feel about that comment?

What is the position of the PDP in Kaduna now?

For me, it is an open race. It depends on how people work for it. Since I want my party to do well and have a good chance, this is not something I am going to discuss openly. It is not a game where you simply go and talk. I prefer to be underrated in anything I do, but I can tell you this: voters, not just in Kaduna but in some parts of the country, largely vote for individuals. So it is up to the individuals to work hard. Those who do will get support in any way that we can offer. It is an open race; that is all I can say.

Isa Ashiru, described as your political godson, has decamped to the ADC. What is your reaction to that?

I do not have a reaction. That is a personal decision. I am in the PDP, and it is the PDP that I know and will work for.

Sir, if you were to meet the President, what would be your advice to him on the current state of the economy?

Well, you see, all the leading presidential candidates, when you look at their political policies, are virtually the same, and some may even be more extreme. The problem is implementation. When implementing major reforms, the weaker segments of society must be protected. My advice is that people’s cries and complaints should be listened to. This is not politics. Anything that can be done to support the weaker segments of society should be done. That is the work of technocrats. If you are a professional or a technocrat and cannot develop a workable policy and implement it in a way that supports the weaker segments of society, then you are not fit for that office. Political office holders occupying key positions in this area should be judged on performance. It is not even a matter of a year; it is a matter of months. How are you doing? If you are achieving something, you stay. If you are not, bring in a better person. Government should begin to function this way. If you want to do favours for individuals, you can do so in different ways, but there are certain areas where there should be no favours.

How do you assess the state of democracy and governance in Nigeria today?

Well, this is the longest period of uninterrupted democratic rule we have had in the country. In itself, that is an achievement. However, what democracy has delivered to the people is also a matter of concern, and people hold different opinions on that. If we take 1999 as a starting point, we should be seeing continuous improvement. Unfortunately, political parties have become something else, governance has also become something else, and security has not improved, particularly as security challenges have become more pronounced. That is not to say democratic governance from 1999 to date has achieved nothing. It has certainly recorded some successes.

However, the conduct of politicians and the behaviour of some people in government are issues that raise serious concern. Our inability to either stop or drastically reduce security challenges remains a major problem.

People talk about economic issues and other concerns, but in my view, once substantial progress is made in restoring security, economic activities will flourish and economic hardship will lessen. If I were setting priorities, security would come first, because it has positive multiplier effects on virtually every other sector. The key question is: what should we do about these issues? What should those in government do? What should politicians, traditional rulers, religious leaders, and sociocultural leaders do?

My personal view is that there are certain issues that should never be politicised, whether by government or by those outside it. Once such issues are politicised, valuable time is lost in addressing them effectively. Security, in particular, should not be politicised. If people outside government raise concerns or offer suggestions on security matters, government should not dismiss them as mere politics.

Likewise, those in opposition should not welcome insecurity simply because they believe it could improve their electoral prospects. That would be selfish.

Security is a matter that affects everyone. It should unite us while we maintain our different political beliefs and aspirations. In my opinion, Nigeria has reached a point where we need to collectively define our national priorities and address them together, while still maintaining our separate political identities and democratic competition. It is a very broad question, but for now, that is my assessment.

Do you hope to vie for any elective office in future?

God willing, in August I will be 70. I do not belong to the class of people who believe that it must always be them, that they must always be there, that they must push themselves forward.

I do not belong to that class of people.

I will be satisfied contributing in any way that I can, while more vibrant younger people are given the chance to lead us. That is my personal position.

Makarfi Calls for National Security Emergency, Defends Multiparty Democracy Ahead of 2027 Election

Former Kaduna State Governor and former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Ahmed Makarfi, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to declare a national emergency on insecurity, warning that Nigeria's escalating security challenges require urgent, coordinated, and extraordinary intervention.

Speaking with journalists at his Kaduna residence on Sunday, Makarfi expressed concern over the worsening state of insecurity across the country, describing it as a grave threat to national stability, democratic progress, and economic development.

According to him, while Nigeria has sustained its longest uninterrupted democratic journey since 1999, the gains of democracy are increasingly being undermined by persistent insecurity and growing economic hardship.

Makarfi stressed that security must remain the government's foremost priority, arguing that meaningful progress in economic development and citizens' welfare can only be achieved in a secure environment.

"The security situation is expanding and becoming increasingly complex. Rather than engaging in criticism, my advice is that the President, in collaboration with state governments, should declare a national emergency on security. Government priorities should be firmly focused on addressing security challenges in all their forms," he stated.

The former governor noted that the prevailing security situation bears the characteristics of a national crisis and should not be treated as a routine governance issue. He urged the government to channel greater resources toward combating insecurity before embarking on other developmental initiatives.

He further advocated stronger collaboration among the federal, state, and local governments, emphasizing the need for increased investment in security personnel, intelligence gathering, training, equipment, logistics, and operational capacity.

Makarfi also cautioned political leaders against politicising security challenges, stressing that insecurity affects all Nigerians regardless of political affiliation, ethnic background, or religious belief.

On electoral matters, the former PDP chairman rejected calls for the deregistration of political parties ahead of the 2027 general elections, describing such proposals as unnecessary and potentially capable of creating perceptions of political interference.

He maintained that any political party that meets the requirements set by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) should be allowed to participate in the electoral process.

"Political parties that satisfy the conditions stipulated by INEC have every right to exist and contest elections. The focus should instead be on strengthening democratic institutions and ensuring compliance with established regulations," he said.

Makarfi also urged political parties to uphold internal democracy through credible congresses, conventions, and transparent primary elections, noting that strong democratic practices within parties are essential for the growth of Nigeria's democracy.

Addressing the internal challenges facing the PDP, he advocated dialogue, reconciliation, and adherence to due process as critical steps toward resolving disputes and strengthening party unity.

Despite the party's current difficulties, Makarfi expressed confidence in the PDP's future, describing it as a well-established political institution with a strong national presence and enduring grassroots support.

Reflecting on his political career, the elder statesman, who will turn 70 in August, ruled out any intention of seeking elective office again. He said he is committed to supporting the emergence of younger leaders while continuing to contribute to national development through mentorship, counsel, and public service.

Ahmed Makarfi, former governor of Kaduna, and Sule Lamido, ex-governor of Jigawa, met in Kaduna on Tuesday to discuss ways of healing divisions within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2027 general election.

The two former governors told journalists at the end of the meeting that the engagement was part of sustained efforts to restore cohesion within the opposition party.

Makarfi, who previously served as PDP national caretaker chairman and board of trustees (BoT) secretary, said the discussion aligned with years of quiet consultations aimed at strengthening the party.

He described the current crisis in the PDP as a moment that demands “sober reflection, forgiveness, and a willingness among members to embrace one another.”


“This is not the time to be angry. It is time to put on our thinking caps and ensure that we come out of the situation the party is in,” Makarfi said.

He said the meeting was not driven by personal ambitions but by the broader interest of the party and members planning to seek elective offices in 2027.

Makarfi added that politics is dynamic, noting that leaders must continually evaluate national realities to determine what best serves democracy, the country, and the PDP.

Lamido said he and Makarfi have for years been exchanging views on the state of the nation and the fortunes of the PDP.

He acknowledged that the party, like any human institution, faces challenges but insisted that commitment to democracy, the nation, and the PDP must override personal grievances.

Lamido highlighted the deteriorating state of the nation, including worsening security, economic hardship, corruption, and the weakening of multi-party democracy, as issues that require a revitalised and united PDP.

He said the consultations among party leaders are centred on resolving internal disputes, including pending litigations, and building a cohesive political front.

“It is not about ego or pride. It is about national sacrifice. We must put the party and the country first,” Lamido said.

Former Gov. Ahmed Makarfi of Kaduna State has said that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) would emerge better and stronger from its current challenges.

Makarfi spoke at the Southern Kaduna PDP Stakeholders’ Summit in Kafanchan, Headquarters of Jema’a Local Government Area, on Monday.

The summit had the theme: ‘Get strengthened: “A wake-up call to PDP members’.

According to him, no party can survive what the PDP has been through in recent years, arguing that many would have folded up by now.

He urged the party’s members to remain resolute, focused and united as the preparations for the 2027 General Elections begin in 2026.

Makarfi also cautioned against money politics during party primaries, urging the members to select principled and credible candidates who can truly represent the interests of the people.

“We must go for people with capacity and principle because the future of the party depends on such people,” he stated

In his remarks, the state PDP Chairman, Edward Marsha, commended the party faithful for the trust and confidence reposed in the current leadership.

Marsha explained that the exit of some persons from the PDP had paved the way for a new generation of leaders that would position the party for future success.

Also speaking, Danjuma Akuso, the Southern Kaduna PDP Zonal Chairman, dismissed concerns over defections from the party, stating that the PDP remained deeply rooted in the area.

Akuso explained that no other party can match PDP’s developmental strides in the area and the state at large.

On their parts, Nuhu Bajoga and Felix Hyet, former Deputy Governor of the state and the immediate past Kaduna state PDP Chairman, respectively, reiterated their readiness to reclaim power in 2027.

Other stakeholders who spoke highlighted the party’s legacy in Southern Kaduna, particularly during the Makarfi administration.

They claimed that the PDP “liberated” the zone through the creation of chiefdoms and the transformation of rural infrastructure, including road development.

I’ve received with shock but also total submission to the will of Allah (SWT) news of the death, today in London, of the immediate past President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR at the age of 82.

President Buhari’s services to Nigeria across time will not be forgotten by many generations of our people. From the fight he fought for the preservation of the unity and integrity of the country as young officer of the Nigerian Army, stints as a Military Governor of the then North Eastern and later Borno State, Minister of Petroleum, GOC, Head of State as well as Executive Chairman of the defunct Petroleum Trust Fund and lately as a two-term President among others, he demonstrated total commitment to the country and humanity.

The late president lived such a good life from which Nigerians, irrespective of ethnic, religious and sectional backgrounds should derive valuable lessons. He utilised the various leadership positions he held to give his best in moving Nigeria forward.

His death at this time when the country needs his wise counsel as a highly respected former leader is therefore a source of sadness for all of us. We will remember him as a leader who gave his all for the country.

It is with utmost sadness that I condole with his immediate family, relatives, associates and all other Nigerians over this irreplaceable loss. I pray to Allah to forgive his shortcomings, strengthen his family and give all of us the courage to bear this irreparable loss.

It is with utmost gratitude and total submission to Allah (SubhanaHu wa Ta’ala) that I convey sincere greetings and felicitations to the Nigeria Muslim community and indeed all Nigerians as we come to the end of the Holy month of Ramadhan (1446 AH) and celebrate the eid el fitr.

The past one month has been significant as we all in various ways intensified efforts towards seeking Allah’s blessings and acceptance of our worships as well as His forgiveness for our infractions. The significance of the month of Ramadhan cannot be overemphasized, because apart from being (among others) the month in which the first Quranic revelation happened 1456 years ago, which Allah described as “a guide to mankind and clear distinction between right and wrong”, the innate self purification and empathy with the less privileged that the period engenders is also a lesson for all times.

As we bid farewell to Ramadhan 1446, I enjoin all not to lose sight of the lessons inherent in the spiritual rejuvenation, sacrifice and self-deprivation that form some of the fundamental components of the fasting period. This way, we will continue to show empathy to one another and generally be better at being our brothers’ and sisters’ keepers.

It is also my earnest prayer that all acts of worship collectively and individually rendered have been accepted by Allah (SWT), especially prayers for the prosperity and sustainable peace in Nigeria, which is a fundamental requirement for sustainable development.

As Nigeria grapples with security and other socioeconomic as well as political challenges, I enjoin all to seize the opportunity provided by this holy season to intensify prayers to Almighty Allah for a speedy resolution to all problems, as I fervently believe that despite current challenges, Nigeria’s place, as a leader, not only in Africa but beyond, is assured. All we need to do is, even as we pray, continue to roll up our sleeves in hard work and commitment. I urge our leaders of all callings, in the spirit of the times, to rededicate to doing the right thing, even if personally and politically not convenient. I also call on the relatively well-to-do to look out for the less privileged friends, brothers and sisters to share with them the joys of the moment.

Ex-Kaduna gov, Makarfi’s son dies in road accident

Faisal Ahmed Mohammed Makarfi, the eldest son of former Kaduna State Governor, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, has tragically died in a car accident.

The incident occurred on Saturday evening along the Kaduna-Zaria expressway.

A source close to the family, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed the details.

“The accident happened along the Kaduna-Zaria highway this evening, Faisal was immediately rushed to an undisclosed hospital, where he was unfortunately declared dead.His father was present at the hospital, and the body has since been taken home for burial preparations,” the source said.

Faisal, a qualified engineer, had an impressive academic background. He began his education at Kaduna International School before attending Adesoye College in Offa, Kwara State, for his secondary education.

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kaduna State, Isa Rabiu, has asked former governor Nasir El-Rufai to be patient and allow a proper investigation to be conducted into his eight years administration in the state.

Rabiu spoke to DAILY POST in Kaduna on Wednesday.

The PDP chieftain was reacting to El-Rufai’s claim that he did not steal public money during his time as Kaduna governor.

El-Rufai had said he is ready to swear with the Holy Quran to prove his innocence.

Reacting to El-Rufai’s assertion, Rabiu said, “Former governor El-Rufai should wait patiently for the final investigation before uttering anything against his predecessors or swearing with the Quran on what transpired during the eight years of his administration in Kaduna State.”

Rabiu observed that the same El-Rufai ‘arranged’ a petition against former governor of Kaduna State, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, following which the Makarfi administration was investigated.

He added, “To be honest, from all indications, El-Rufai lacks discipline, self control and focus to do the right thing than swearing with holy Quran. The same El-Rufai ran away to a foreign country during the regime of late President Yar’Adua and only came back when the President died in 2010 and started making unnecessary utterances against the late President Yar’Adua.”

He called on the Kaduna State government, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, and the Independent Corrupt Practices and related offences Commission, ICPC, to investigate the former governor with a view to recovering what was stolen from the state during his tenure.

MESSAGE TO NIGERANS ON THE OCCASION OF MAULUD-EL-NABIYY 1446

It has pleased Allah (SWT) to enable us witness and celebrate yet another Eid-el-maulud, which is the celebration of the birth of Prophet Muhammad (SAW).

It is with gratitude to Allah (SWT) that I convey to all, particularly the Muslim Ummah, my warmest greetings and felicitations on this auspicious occasion of the Eid-el-maulud, the celebration of the birth, 1,499 years ago, of the Prophet of Islam and ‘Mercy to Mankind’ Muhammad ibn Abdullah; May the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.

The Maulud season is an opportune moment for all of us Muslims and non Muslims alike, to reflect on the life and times of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) and the message he brought to mankind with a view to, as always trying to imbibe and internalize its spirit.

As we celebrate the Maulud-el-Nabiyyi, the lessons of how Prophet Muhammad(SAW) lived his life right from infancy till his return to his Maker must not be lost on us. For therein lies a perfect example of peace, honesty, good neighbourliness, love, patience, perseverance, respect and care for humanity, irrespective of whatever differences as well as purposeful leadership. Prophet Muhammad (SAW)as an embodiment of these and many other virtues must be studied and emulated as much as possible by all lovers of peace particularly those of us who adhere to the religion of Islam as propounded by him. The message of Islam brought by Prophet Muhammad (SAW) remains as relevant today as it was on the day of the first Revelation 1,459 years ago.

Despite our differences in cultures, faiths and other factors, we have a leaf to borrow from the way Prophet Muhammad (SAW)welded together peoples and communities of diverse outlooks and turned them into one community that has looked at, and utilized diversity as a potent tool of development rather than a divisive one. I have always advocated for a situation in which we express our gratitude to God Almighty for the diversity with which He has blessed us by harnessing same and everyone of us bringing our varied endowments, both human and natural, for the development of the collective. That way, even the sky can only be the starting point for us.

I therefore appeal that we continue to explore more avenues of peaceful coexistence amongst ourselves. We should carefully study and adopt the mature and honest manner that Prophet Muhammad (SAW)taught the world to live irrespective of religious or other differences. Of particular interest should be the way he was accepted by the Jews in Medina and allowed to establish such a fair and equitable system of government that has now become a reference point in history. So also was his reception of and friendship with Christians to such an extent that he, at some point availed them the Grand Mosque in Madina for their religious Service. These certainly make good studies in accommodation, sacrifice and peaceful coexistence and they, certainly are worthy of emulation by all.

I once again congratulate the Muslim Ummah and indeed entire mankind as we celebrate Maulud-el-Nabiyyi. I pray to Allah (SWT) to enable us witness many more returns of this historic day as He continues to protect and guide us aright.

‘Invite EFCC, ICPC to investigate El-Rufai, others’ – PDP advises Gov Uba Sani

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Kaduna State, has called on the Governor of Kaduna State, Senator Uba Sani, to immediately

invite the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Matters Commission, ICPC, to further investigate and recover all the monies looted by Nasir El-Rufai and his cronies.

The party also appealed to law enforcement agencies to beam their searchlights on indicted persons to prosecute them.

Abraham Alberah Catoh, the state publicity secretary of PDP in Kaduna, said in a statement on Friday that the party is following events as they unfold and will always react accordingly.

According to his statement: “The report of the Kaduna State House of Assembly investigations on the financial expenditure of the immediate past administration of Nasir El-Rufai has vindicated the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, that has always challenged the government on certain expenses of the Elrufai government.

“The PDP wish to call on the governor of the state, Sen. Uba Sani, to, as a matter of transparency and posterity, immediately invite the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Matters Commission, ICPC, to further investigate and recover all the monies looted by Nasir El-Rufai and his cronies, and those found guilty be prosecuted, as revealed and recommended by the committee’s report.

“It will be recalled that earlier, Governor Uba Sani had claimed that he supported and gave his consent during the application for the loan in good faith while serving as a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria from Kaduna. Taking this bold step will further exonerate him from public scrutiny and the court of public opinion.

“The PDP supports full government action towards enthroning transparency and good governance across all levels of government in the state.”

According to the statement, the party commended the House of Assembly and the members of the committee for a job well done and for standing on the good side of posterity, as history will never judge them in a bad light.

Debt: Kaduna lawmakers set up committee to probe El-Rufai’s administration

The committee is to investigate all financial transactions, loans, grants, and project executions between 2015 and 2023 when Mr El-Rufai was Kaduna governor.

The Kaduna State House of Assembly has constituted an ad hoc committee to investigate all financial transactions, loans, grants, and project executions by the state government between 2015 and 2023.

This development comes on the heels of Governor Uba Sani’s statement at a recent town hall meeting that the state is grappling with a debt burden of $587 million, N85 billion and N115 billion contractual liabilities left behind by the administration of former Governor Nasir El-Rufai.

The disclosure sparked a debate on the debts, prompting calls for scrutiny of key officials involved in loan procurement, project execution, and fund utilisation.

Responding to these demands, the House asked the committee to summon prominent figures, including former speakers of the 8th and 9th Assembly, commissioners of finance, former managing directors of Kaduna MDAs, senior counsellor Jimi Lawal, and former commissioners of budget and planning to appear before it.

A motion of urgent public importance, moved by Mugu Yusuf, a PDP member representing Kaura Constituency, was adopted by other members at Tuesday’s sitting presided over by the Speaker, Yusuf Liman.

After deliberations, the speaker said the ad hoc committee would investigate abandoned projects and foreign loans received by the previous administration, as residents of the state have a right to be informed about the state’s financial position.

He said those to be summoned are expected to shed light on crucial details that could facilitate the recovery of funds earmarked for projects that were not completed.

The ad-hoc committee has Lawal Aminu (Doka/Gabasawa constituency) as chairman. The members include Mugu Yusuf (Kaura constituency), House Majority Leader Munira Tanimu; and Chairman of the House Committee on Appropriation, Shehu Pambegua.

…Insists project award didn’t meet minimum threshold of due process


The Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 election, Atiku Abubakar, has condemned claims being made by the President Bola Tinubu-led administration bout the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway Project.

He described as wasteful and a highway to fraud the claim by Works Minister, Dave Umahi, that the 700km Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway will tentatively cost N15.6 trillion.

This was contained in a statement signed by his Media Office, in Abuja, on Thursday.

Atiku equally knocked Umahi for altering the initial plan of the project after Gilbert Chagoury’s Hitech had been awarded the contract without any competitive bidding.

He said, “Umahi had announced that the project would be fully funded by Hitech, and based on this, there was no competitive bidding. He (Umahi) then turned around to say that Hitech could only raise just 6% of the money for the pilot phase. This smacks of deceit.”

According to the statement, Umahi had during his media rounds at select TV stations on Thursday said the road project would cost N15.6 trillion ($13bn at exchange rate of N1,200/$1) while the rail which will pass through the road will be costed separately. The minister had also said the project would not be PPP, but the government would be providing 15%-30% counterpart financing.

Responding to Umahi’s revelation, Atiku said the tentative cost was the equivalent of the total budget of all 36 states of the federation combined.

He said, “The total budget of all 36 states of the federation for 2024 stands at about N14 trillion. If you add that of the FCT, the entire budget of all sub-nationals is N15.91 trillion. This is scandalous. Worse still, they have already awarded the contract but are still not sure of the level of the counterpart funding component of the federal government!

“Umahi had said in September 2023 that Gilbert Chagoury’s Hitech had the money to construct the highway and that it would be PPP. Hitech was to build, operate, and transfer it back to the Nigerian government after years of tolling.

“It was reported by every media organization, including those owned by Tinubu. It was on the basis of this proposal that Hitech was picked. Why did Umahi then turn around to claim that it was not to be a PPP but that the government would pay 15%-30%?”

The former Vice President noted that in the 2024 budget, the project was captured as the Lagos-Port Harcourt coastal highway and was put at a cost of N500m.

“Although the National Assembly approved N500m for the project this year, the Tinubu administration has released N1.06tn. That is more than 200 times what is in the Appropriation Act. This is what happens when the National Assembly fails in its duties,” he added.

Atiku said it was curious that the N15.91 trillion announced by Umahi did not include the cost of the railway component. He therefore wondered how much the project would cost if the railway component is included.

“If N15.6 trillion is for the road component alone, then the total cost could be far higher when the railway is included. We want to know the cost of the railway,” he added.

The PDP presidential candidate also lambasted Umahi for admitting that the project was given to Gilbert Chagoury’s Hitech construction company without a competitive bidding.

He asked Umahi to stop trying to deceive Nigerians with the claim that only Hitech was competent enough to do the project, wondering if it is the same that has been grappling with the execution of its projects in Lagos.

Atiku stated, “The essence of a competitive bidding is so that Nigerians can get the best value for money. It is so that you can compare prices and pick the company that can afford the project.

“ It is wrong for him to have concluded that only Hitech could handle this project when such a project has been done by other reputable firms in the United States, China and South Africa.

“He claims he didn’t know there was a business relationship between Gilbert Chagoury and Tinubu, but this is another lie because Tinubu has publicly acknowledged this fact.”

Atiku also accused the works minister of attempting to deceive Nigerians as regards the appropriation for the project.

He called on members of the National Assembly to be alive to their responsibilities instead of acting like an annexe of the presidency.

The PDP candidate further said, “Until I exposed the dubious nature of this project, no member of the National Assembly thought it wise to investigate. The total cost was never made known until now. The fact that there was no bidding was never made known until I blew the whistle.”

The former Vice President also knocked Umahi for claiming that no money had been released yet to Hitech, which he described as another lie.

“On March 31, 2024, Umahi came on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics programme where he pointedly said that money that the sum of N1.06tn was released to Hitech. Only for him to say on TVC on April 11 that the same money had not been released. Which one is true, and which one is false?”

That never sunk into ambivalent corrupt ridden, accidental civil servant as he fondly call himself.

One thing is patently clear with the czar and even Obasanjo has stated it very clearly in his book, whence he stated that Elrufai's loyalty is only to himself and his shadow.The import of this, is that,the czar is disastrously unfit to hold any position of public trust thus his service track record too, evince same.

He converted land belonging to PHCN in Abuja to personal use by allocating same to himself, immediate family members, even including the unborn child as at then. If not for the malaise of a corrupt ridden system, to the sodangi report which banned him from ever holding public office, would have saved us the myraid of deep rooted problems which his reign as emperor in Sir kashim house foisted on the good people of our dear state.

I can assure you, much as Uba Sani has been trying his bit in Kaduna to cement the fissures of ethno religious and cultural differences which he has worked up on the state, next 3 year's may not be enough to heal same.Thus, when Elrufai was elected governor of Kaduna state , courtesy of the whirlwind that brought APC, Buhari et all to power, those of us who knew his antecedents were never disappointed by his record of stewardship, as the saying goe's to the leopard can never change it's skin, so like Abuja, pronto too, in Kaduna, even messier.

We may recall that it is the same mr clean stuff, who sold the then Nigerian telecommunication ( NITEL), to a smudge placeholder in portugal who headquarters was hosted in 20 ft portkabin and assets was no were even near 1000% of the net worth of nitel. That is vintage Elrufai for you.

A very smooth liar and agent provocateur that is is, who thrives in controversy, we later understood him better, that he fan's in that , so as to distract attention from his illicit deals and abuse of office. Welcome the emperor of Sir kashim house. The land rustler within his first Year in office got the lands and survey ministry, to issue him no less than 67 no's carve out from government properties in choice area's of the capital city . The assumption at the ministry was that Elrufai, would allocate same to political appointees as use to be the practice. If, i may ask and urge Uba Sani as part of the recovery of looted funds, where is the 150,000 barrel's per day refinery, which he allocated and disbursed money for, to be be sited in Niger republic that never saw the light of day?

The over $8 million dollars consultancy funds drawn on the fabled Kaduna mono rail project that still remains in the pipeline. hmm, the Kaduna metropolitan CCTV project, the $ 350 million loans execution is populated by largely intangibles, consultancy payments and close to nill capital project's. Governor Uba Sani can only make some tangible progress if and only if, he constitute both a judicial panel of inquiry and a team of forensic auditors to clinically probe the eight locust year's of the czar.

Lastly, the Czar has left an unmatched record of land rustling ever witnessed in the annals of Kaduna state by any Governor, yet he has the audacity in his characteristics shameful manner, to say, he has only one property in Kaduna whole of Kaduna metropolitan capital. The czar must know, karma is a bitch and it is already taking it's toll on him.

PDP has officially announced the appointment of a former President of the Senate, Adolphus Wabara, as the substantive chairman of the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT).
In a strategic move to bolster the party’s leadership, a former Governor of Kaduna State, Ahmed Makarfi has also been appointed as the Secretary of the BoT, taking over from former Minister of Special Duties, Kabir Turaki.

Adolphus Wabara’s extensive political experience and his previous tenure as Senate President are expected to provide valuable leadership and guidance to the BoT. Similarly, Ahmed Makarfi’s track record as Kaduna State Governor and his contributions to the party in various capacities are anticipated to bring renewed vigour and perspective to the BoT’s.

PDP THANKS KADUNA PEOPLE, CHARGES ELECTORATES TO KEEP FAITH WITH THE PARTY AHEAD OF RERUN ELECTIONS

As the PDP concludes its struggle for the reclamation of the mandate of the people of Kaduna State at the Supreme Court, yesterday 19th January 2023, the party is deeply appreciative of the support and prayers of well-meaning citizens before, during, and after the general elections.

Although, we did not get justice at the court owing to the fact that the matter was decided strictly on technicalities and not the substance of the case, we appeal to our teeming supporters to remain calm and accept this outcome as the will of God for us all.

Having won the presidential election in the state, all three senators from the state, seven members of the House of Representatives, and two others facing a rerun, 12 members of the House of Assembly and two others also facing a rerun, the people of Kaduna State have clearly shown that the PDP remains their party choice.

We want to assure everyone of our party's resolve to continue working with the people in holding the government of the state accountable and ensuring equity, justice, and fairness in the allocation of government resources and projects.

We also want to plead with the people of the state, especially those in Makera, Chikun, Kauru, Kudan, Igabi, and Kachia/Kagarko state and federal constituencies respectively, to keep faith with our party candidates in the rerun elections of 9th February, 2023. We urge the electorates not to be discouraged by the outcome of the Supreme Court judgment in respect of the governorship election by coming out enmasse to vote for the PDP and also defend their votes.

Eternal vigilance is the price for freedom. Our liberation, therefore, from the era of electoral theft, can only be guaranteed when we mobilise ourselves to vote, resist vote buying and intimidation of voters, and also ensure our votes are counted, protected, and defended at all costs, at the various collation centres. This should be our attitude come 9th February, 2023, across all the areas election will be holding.

Kaduna PDP reacts to Yero’s exit from party

While reacting to the exit of the two politicians from the party, Mr Hyat told the News men that the party will not be weakened by it.


The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kaduna State, Felix Hyat, said the exit of a former governor, Ramalan Yero, and Godfrey Gaiya, a former member of the House of Representatives, will not affect the party.

Last week, Mr Yero resigned from the party.

The former governor in a letter to his ward in Kaura Zaria, said he was leaving the PDP and returned his membership card to the ward leadership.

While reacting to the exit of the two politicians from the party, Mr Hyat told the News men that the party will not be weakened by it.

“They were mere paperweights. They had no influence. We are not going to miss any of them.

“None of them has said that the PDP maltreated him. We did not do anything to offend anyone.

“They came on their own volition. None of them did not get a good share even above their contributions to the party.

“The former governor became a commissioner for finance without being a member of the PDP.

“As a sitting governor, he contested and lost the governorship seat in 2015. He contested for the ticket to seek the seat but lost the primaries.

“As for Gaiya, he got two terms in the House of Representatives and left after losing elections.


“He came even lower, politically speaking, and sought to be a local government chairman but lost the primaries woefully.

“I am told that he was promised the then vacant Kaduna State ministerial slot if he defected, but it has been taken now. He may have done another political arithmetic. It is up to him.

“So, their exit cannot pain anyone. They are not strong politicians with any particular support base.”

Mr Hyat said the PDP was the leading party in Kaduna having won the three senate seats and 10 out of 16 House of Representatives seats.

Also, the party has approached the appeal court to challenge the judgement of the state governorship election tribunal which pronounced the APC as the winner of the 18 March governorship election in the state.

Kaduna Guber: Anxiety As Tribunal Prepares To Deliver Judgement Thursday.

There is palpable anxiety and apprehension among all and sundry particularly the political players as the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal has reserved for judgement in the coming days. While the issues raised by counsels to the petitioner and Respondents are issues and responses that seem appealing depending on the angle you are viewing it from, the good people of Kaduna State are anxious and waiting patiently for the judgement expected to be delivered in the coming days. But it is however very difficult to predict where the pendulum will swing on the long run. Interestingly is the fact that all the parties in the suit are claiming anticipated Victory.

For the main plaintiff in the case, Rt. Honourable Isa Ashiru of the people’s Democratic Party (PDP) and his party, they were robbed of their victory and committed to reclaiming their ‘stolen’ mandate and while the case lasted provided evidences to that effect, but the candidate of the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) and Governor, Senator Uba Sani and his party, won the election and also provided evidences that they won.

Comrade Danjuma Sarki who was the Governorship returning officer for the PDP at the time of the election and collation of results said, ” Some of the results were manipulated in favour of the ruling party, the APC and that is why we are challenging the outcome and pronouncement of Senator Uba Sani as winner of the election. And we are optimistic that the tribunal will give us back the mandate given to us by the good people of Kaduna State through their votes.

Also, the led counsel to Isa Ashiru of PDP Oluwole Iyamu SAN, and that of Governor Uba Sani of the APC Chief Duri Adeyele SAN, are also hopeful that the judgement will go in their favour and for their clients.

But more anxious are supporters of the parties who always throng the court in solidarity for their preferred candidate in the case.

Kaduna guber: We’ll reclaim lost mandate at Tribunal — PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kaduna State has appealed to its supporters across Kaduna State to be calm and assured that it would soon reclaim the governorship mandate at the Election Petition Tribunal.

Publicity Secretary, PDP Kaduna State in a statement, stated that “it is often said that no matter how long the night tarries, morning would come.”

According to him, “Uba Sani, therefore, may continue to run or attempt to evade the judicial service of the governorship election petition by the PDP but can not hide.”

“We thank the Kaduna State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal for granting our request for a substituted service to Uba Sani. When you conspire to thwart the outcome of an election against the choice of the people, you shouldn’t be afraid to defend the stolen mandate in court”.

“We assure the people of the state of our resolve to recover the mandate freely given to our candidate and party in the March 18 governorship election.”

“Let us continue to show support to the party, remain calm, and also pray that God will grant their Lordships the wisdom to continue to do the right thing always,” he stated.

ASAKE TO FACE EFCC: RETURN THE 700MILLION NAIRA OR FACE EFCC

The legal representative of engineer mike Auta and the Labour party are calling out on Asake, the labour party candidate in the just concluded governorship election to return money reaching the sum of 700 million naira that he and other persons fraudulently obtained.


​This came up weeks after Labour party lost the elections to Uba Sani of the APC. It will be relevant to remember the rumors of Asake receiving money and letting his party down. The party is asking Asake to return the money or provide a report of how the money was being spent.

Asake was seen as the hope of southern Kaduna, the closest to the seat after Yakowa, but with all the rumor and allegations, it is difficult to decide if he was a savior or a traitor. Evidence shows that he fraudulently collected money from the party and Eng. Mike Auta and he has refused to make himself available or provide any form of clarification.

He is now given 14 days to provide the money or a report on how it was spent of face investigation by the EFCC. This news is a shock to all the Kaduna Labour party supporters and particularly to the people of southern Kaduna who had so much hope in Asake’s personality.

BREAKING: Incumbent Gov Fintiri Wins Adamawa Guber Poll

After two days of drama and suspense, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the Adamawa State governorship election, Umaru Ahmadu Fintiri, has won his reelection bid.

Fintiri garnered 430,869 votes to defeat his closest challenger and candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Aisha Ahmed Binani, who scored 398,788 votes.

The Returning Officer for the election, Prof. Mohammed Mele, is expected to formally declare the incumbent Governor Fintiri, who was first elected governor in 2019, as winner of the election after the ongoing formalities.

Re-run: Kaduna PDP rejects State Assembly election results

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Kaduna state on Monday, rejected the results of the re-run election held in Kudan, Giwa West, Kauru and Sanga State House of Assembly constituencies of the state.

In a protest letter signed by the Kaduna State PDP Secretary, Ibrahim Wusono, and made available to newsmen alleged that their agents were beaten and sent away from polling units and collation centres.

The PDP’s letter which was addressed to the Kaduna state Resident Electoral Commissioner, Independent National Electoral Commission, stated that the party had rejected the re-run election results.

“I have been directed to officially draw your attention to the above subject matter on the Kaduna re-run elections.


“You are aware that re-run elections were held in four State House of Assembly Constituencies in Kaduna State namely Kudan, Giwa West, Kauru and Sanga.

However, the letter said “As permitted by law, we sent our agents at both the polling units where the elections were held or were to hold and the collation centres.

However, the party alleged that “the reports we received from our agents showed that the election was marred by violence, thuggery, ballot box snatching, assault and battery, use of compromised security agents to harass, intimidate and chase out our supporters and agents from the polling units and the collation centers. Votes buying by the ruling party”

“As aforementioned, examples include our Party’s Returning Agent at the Kudan Collation Center, Hon. Abdullahi S. Ahmed was beaten up. He was beaten and forced out of the collation center for opposing a wrong that was being perpetrated.”


PDP added : “We therefore state unequivocally that we will not accept any results brought to you because the elections were not free and fair.

“So, while we look forward to you to use your good office to ensure the rejection of the results, accept our assurances of highest esteem, please”

Attempt to speak with the All Progressives Congress (APC) Kaduna state chapter spokesman, Salisu Tanko Wusono failed as he did not return calls put through him to comment over PDP claims.

Kogi PDP Primary: Makarfi To Preside Over Guber Election Committee

Sen. Ahmed Makarfi, a former Governor of Kaduna State, has been chosen by the People’s Democratic Party(PDP) to chair the Kogi State governorship primary elections, which will take place on Sunday in Lokoja, the state capital.

In a statement issued by the leadership of the party through the National Organising Secretary, Umar Bature said the goal of the activity is to provide the party a chance to select its candidate for the state’s governorship election slated for November 11.

The statement further named Laureta Ogwuche as secretary of the Seven-Person Committee, which also includes Toyin Mark, Ikechukwu Nwosu, Deolu Harrison, Usman Ibrahim, and Anthony Onwuka.


The statement enjoined the committee to be guided strictly “by the PDP Constitution (2017 as amended), the electoral guidelines for party primary elections and the 2022 Electoral Act.

“It is expected that your exemplary conduct and strict adherence to rules and regulations during your assignment will justify the confidence reposed in you by the leadership of the party.”
