The british kicked their behind and the Ibadans were not too interested in that area as the overriding objective was to get Ilorin and to push the Fulanis back, civilisation initially came from the North before the arrival of the British. The Ijebus were good warriors sha but there were quite a few wars and battles with the Ibadans that were usually settled no victor no vanquished.

Continuing with sentiments previously expressed by other commenters, this is a valuable and informative thread where the lively participatory and contributory style is making it even more interesting.

I hope that people can see why some of us favor a united Nigeria that serves as a beacon for the rest of Africa.  Learn from history.  If you don't know your history, you are doomed to neverending failure.  Understand that people will always find reasons to break into smaller and smaller parts.  Yes, each ethnic group is "united" now, but break Nigeria into 2 or 3 parts, with the Yorubas in their Odualand and the Igbos in their Biafra, and the same sentiments that tore Nigeria apart will rear its ugly jealous hateful head in each of those new countries!  I;m not saying anyone is particularly prone to wars, but it takes a small group of disaffected people to get the populace riled up against a phantom oppressor.

I don't want to belabour things.  I only want to emphasise the need to be less myopic.  So many people want Nigeria to break apart because of tribal sentiments - well, trust me, when you don't have the Igbos or Hausas or Yorubas to kick around anymore, you will turn on yourselves.  If it's not tribal or clannish, it will be religious.  It happens all the time.  (India continues to deal with "tribal" issues, just as Pakistan, ever since their breakup.)

How long will Africa continue to break up?  Nigeria into 3 parts?  Then each of those new "nations" break up further - before it's all done, Nigeria will have broken up into 240 tribal countries.  Or maybe each clan  will have it's own country.  lol.

/off my soapbox.  It had to be said.  No offense sha.  embarassed

. . . .In January 1966, our sons (Igbo) struck, and wanted to tame these folks. The coup was foiled by OUR sons. In july 1966, Hausa/Fulani struck back and (for the sake of this argument) "took revenge" and much more. A crisis ensued. To resolve the crisis, our son (Ojukwu) still wanting to tame those people, insisted that YOUR brother Ogunipe should take over power after Ironsi's death. Guess what? Your brother RAN AWAY. undecided angry
. . . Lost millions of our people, plus our mission to tame the Hausa/Fulani in Nigeria.

For our efforts, the Hausa/Fulani, with YOUR full support, shut the East out of power (I would say out of fear of what we might do to them) from 1970 till Jonathan's ascendancy.
Is the above an admission that the oft-proclaimed anti-corruption coup of 1966 where Tafawa Balewa and Sardauna of Sokoto, Ahmadu Bello were murdered was actually an assassination plot targeted at Northerners (in order to remove them from power)?
RomanceRe: The Dilemma Of An Acute Stutterer In Love by isalegan2: 4:41pm On Feb 06, 2012
I haven't heard much about this speech impediment recently, so I assumed there is a lot of very effective methods to relieve the stutterer and help them stop. Also, it seems to disproportionately affect young men, who (we assume) later grow out of it once out of the teen years.

Anyway, whatever the case, no matter how severe the stammering, it'd be tragic for the guy to let it prevent him from making a connection.  I mean, who cares!  Just make your move.  Maybe try the advice of first writing a letter.  I even heard that stutterers don't have any problems when they sing.  So, maybe sing some of the church songs to her first, or when you feel you're about to stammer. lol.

I can just see it now: Our stutterer goes to talk to the girl; kiss she hears him stammer and she bursts out laughing. shocked huh angry  His feelings get hurt, and he thinks "what a b*&^%, she's laughing at me because I stammer!"  embarassed  sad  Unbeknownst to him, she also has a problem - she laughs when she's nervous or surprised.   shocked grin grin cry  Ah!  What a world.  We're all so misunderstood.  Amazing how the human race hasn't slowly died out due to assumptions conjectures and misunderstandings. cheesy

Yorubas, Binis, Igbos, Hausa etc,  are all not indigenous to where they're in present day Nigeria - we all migrated from different places,  We might even be the same people but we now speak different languages,

Even most of the present day English people are GERMANS - but we Africans do HATE studying our history and migration patterns - that's why we're in the mess we're in today,

Your post sounds heartfelt.  But to be fair, Ibos are not the only ones that display tribalism on Nairaland (and I'm not just talking about this thread).  Furthermore, you don't always know if the "tribalist" behind the username is actually what they claim; we've seen posters with seemingly Yoruba names posting anti-Yoruba messages, and vice versa.

RomanceRe: 23 Years Old Nigeria Man, Marries 68 Years Old Greek Wife by isalegan2: 4:13pm On Feb 04, 2012
I don't see why people on here are getting their knickers in a twist over this?  Is it her supposed age, her perceived homeliness, or her heaviness?

Those two look about the same age.  And lots of Eastern Nigerian men actually like heavier women.  She is not ugly, although plain; and she also looks pregnant.  So, she's not a beauty queen?  She'll probably make a good wife and mother, and stay married longer than some of the whiners on this thread. undecided  I personally don't consider marrying outside of my own race and culture, but I'm not going to get all spastic over someone else's marriage. Jeez!
yeah now we can take off Van Pee
He won't want to leave the play right now; probably dreaming of a hat-trick. lol.  It's curious how Van Pervert didn't start scoring until Premier League had been cleared of its superstars like CRon. It only took him about a hundred years after all the hoopla.

Oh!  Hey there, Mukimuki.  Arsenal getting lucky and Muki's feeling funky.  Funkee Funkay.  grin

P.S. Jinxed! He scored as I was composing. tongue
