SEFAGO:I can't count how many times Black people from all over the world, once they realize I am Nigerian, have come up to me and praised Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe. On her birthday, I purchased the oldest edition I could find for a friend from Guyana who also loved it as a teen. I guess, just as in Nigeria, many countries also make it required reading in the secondary schools. On the issue of Achebe's chances of winning a Nobel Prize in Literature? Honestly, I don't see it. - How many countries have more than one Nobel in Literature Laureate? - The prize takes into consideration your body of work. As much as I loved Things Fall Apart, the fact is some of Achebe's later works mayl actually count against him. I dare anyone to try to read Anthills Of The Savannah and get more than 1/3 of the way. It really was not to the standard I would expect an Achebe work to be. No disrespect! On the other hand, Toni Morrison won for Beloved, which was a poor imitation of Alice Walker's brilliant The Color Purple, so never mind. ![]() In all seriousness, we have a wealth of talented African writers that are not praised enough. A couple have been mentioned by the poster I quoted. Another really wonderful writer, whose book, The Joys of Motherhood, rivals the best works of anyone, including those of Achebe and Soyinka, is a Nigerian woman named Buchi Emecheta. It is truly haunting and superbly written. -Isale Gangan |

jason12345: I think you misspoke. Don't be fooled. The Brits did us no favors. What they broke apart, we're going to put together. That is, a united Africa. ![]() |
jason12345:I'm a sister. Maybe I'll update my profile to reflect that. |
Jarus:This Sanusi guy speaks truth to power. I will check out your link, Jarus. Thanks. There have been a number of posts that have delved into this anti-northern sentiment, so I am not going to write a book here. Suffice it to say, an awful lot of the hatred directed towards the north appear to be motivated by religious bigotry. Deny it all you want. The majority of their people live in poverty just like the southern states. No different from the rest of Nigeria. Nigeria will not divide any time soon. So, build a bridge - not a wall. jason12345:You better believe it, brother! ![]() -Isale Gangan |

Gamine:I am so proud of what you've done. I think we have a great culture and rich history as Africans and should prioritise preserving it. I know there are people that simply don't care. We won't pay them any mind. -Isale Gangan |

OP, how bad is it? Have you lost any weight? Hope this does not get blown out of proportion and starts affecting your marriage. Good luck. |
Inzaghi has scored twice for Milan. RM has 1 from Higuain. Into injury time now. -Isale Gangan |
I'm trying to watch this on a stream. So much buffering. Cristiano needs to stay out of Gattuso's face. He'll break him in two. They clashed a couple years ago too when Cristiano was with Manchester Utd. Big mistake mouthing off to that dude.-Isale Gangan |
Sorry to hear that, Lagosboy. It sounds like he was relatively young and vital. No one knows when it is their time to go. May he rest in peace, Insha Allah. And as we say in Lagos, Baba Lagosboy, Sun re o. ma je kun, ma je ekolo; nkan ton ba n je l'orun ni ko je. -Isale Gangan |
Jesse Jackson is not credible. And not relevant. Hope they send him packing ASAP. |
Hamid O:Hear here! :handclap: |
Poster, Find out what time one of her favorite shows come on tv, maybe american idol or any insipid faked-up reality crap like next big model or summat. halfway through, when it's really getting good, call her up demanding she stay on the phone for 20 minutes otherwise she doesn't really love you at all. obviously! |

I don't find it funny that people going through some of the most trying times in their lives have to be mocked on here. To the people posting the names of the divorce petiioners, and those who find others' misery a source of chuckles, I suppose when your marriage is ruined and you're making tough choices about your children's future you will find it funny when some nitwit posts your business all over the internet. shame! And I'm not aggrieved because this has ever happened to me. Just a little human decency, for God's sake. A little empathy. Put yourself in these people's shoes. |
Anyone who is supportive of the UN/USA coming into Nigeria to "render help" better re-acquaint themselves with what happened at Abu Ghraib. Remember that over 90% of the men and women despoiled, tortured and killed at Abu Ghraib prison were simply regular Iraqi civilians picked up and detained, mostly without the knowledge of their family or the judicial system. Be careful what you wish for. |
Does this site have moderators? Or is it about inflating the number of its subscribers? It is increasingly embarrassing and I cannot in good conscience recommend it to anyone. |
I don't know about all atheists and I don't know about people who were raised up as atheists - never knowing any religious instructions. But, I once knew an atheist who demonstrated a very good conscience. Of course, she wouldn't admit being an atheist. She'll call herself an agnostic or anything else, but in reality she had lost the belief in God. The worst person I have ever met, actually, the 2 worst people I have ever known was one man who preached to me and anyone who would listen about how he is an elder in his baptist church and if we wanted to be saved blah blah blah. The other one - the meanest person I have ever met - was another man who asked me during a job interview about my religion and proceeded to preach about how he is a regular (methodist) church-goer and everyone should go to church regularly. Yes, I worked for both these creatures. Not for long though. Horrible men! They were so mean and so fake that it really made a bad impression. I'm not saying they were that way because of their religion. More that they were so mean but wanted to cover up and make people think they were nice by just always bringing up their faith as if just telling people you believe in God and are a high-ranking church member counted more than demonstrating a good and just character. They treated me and everyone so badly. I guess they missed bible school on the day they taught all the other kids about the golden rule. |
Abu Zola:The beating on the buttocks was in secondary school where they had all kinds of teachers including Christians. Never got beat in Islamic school ever. Never saw a female being beat there so don't even know how they do it. Not sure what you mean by the "name implies." Name is for Isale-Gangan, the area where I was born. |
