Tahiti debuts at major soccer tournament By ROB HARRIS (AP Sports Writer) | The Associated Press – 8 hours ago BELO HORIZONTE, Brazil (AP) -- Coming from a tiny island in the South Pacific to the huge country of Brazil, a group of men from Tahiti is preparing to play some of the best soccer teams in the world. Tahiti's national team will make its debut at a major FIFA tournament on Monday when it plays African champion Nigeria at the Confederations Cup. Tahiti, one of the world's most remote islands with a population of only 178,000, will be playing against a nation of 170 million in front of a global television audience of millions. ''We will write a page of international history,'' Tahiti coach Eddie Etaeta said through a translator. ''This will be our first very high level match.'' Ranked 138th by FIFA, sandwiched between Syria and Afghanistan, Tahiti qualified for the World Cup warm-up tournament ahead of 2010 World Cup qualifier New Zealand by winning the Oceania Nations Cup. There is only one professional player on the team - Marama Vahirua. The striker, who plays for Greek club Panthrakikos, is the only Tahitian to play professionally outside the island. But even for Vahirua, the trip to Brazil is a new experience as the team gets surrounded by security, quizzed by the world media, and prepares to play in some of the most famous venues in the sport. ''Everything is rather new, I have never lived this before,'' Vahirua said through a translator at a news conference attended by only two reporters from Tahiti. ''I have never been at such a tournament. It will be a very first time for me as well. I will try not to be shy.'' Of the 23 players, Tahiti coach Eddie Etaeta said nine are unemployed, while others have day jobs as delivery boys, truck drivers, physical education teachers and accountants. ''They don't want to be ridiculed, they want to show ... we are up to the task,'' Vahirua said. Tahiti will be playing teams in Brazil not only full of professional players, but also earning big money. Facing Nigeria first seems like good fortune from the draw, given that world and European champion Spain is next in Group B, followed by South American champion Uruguay. ''The players are all aware there is a chasm between the professional and amateur world,'' Vahirua said. ''I think tomorrow we will not be on a par with Nigeria ... they have been professional for years. ''But mentally we are ready. We will fight like lions and we will do anything to represent our country.'' The Nigeria match will be played at the Mineirao, a renovated stadium that is one of Brazil's most revered soccer venues with a capacity exceeding 62,000. The biggest stadium in Tahiti can only seat 10,000, and the players have heard tapes of crowd noises to prepare them for the atmosphere expected in Brazil. ''I don't feel at ease because it's not what we are used to at home,'' Etaeta said. ''When I got here and saw this huge stadium I felt a bit cold. It's a stadium loaded with history ... In the dressing room I was really astonished to see these huge lockers.'' The trip for Tahiti is about putting in credible performances - and avoiding embarrassments such as their record 10-0 loss to New Zealand in 2004 - rather than being star-struck by opponents. With the experience gained in Brazil, Etaeta hopes the team's chances of becoming more competitive on the field will be enhanced. Because after leaving Brazil, it will be back to playing in front of tiny crowds with little interest from the rest of the world. ''Today the star is Tahiti,'' Etaeta said. ''I'm proud the whole of media looks to Tahiti ... and we will try to draw lessons so we can improve our football.'' --- Rob Harris can be reached at http://twitter.com/RobHarris Comments Atlasman • 5 hours ago Report Abuse Man, talk about David vs Goliath - 3 times to boot (Nigeria, Spain, Uruguay). Talking dolls challenge racial stereotypes By Teo Kermeliotis and Ann Colwell, for CNN Tue March 12, 2013 https://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/dam/assets/130307133231-ama-girl-rooti-dolls-horizontal-gallery.jpg Rooti Dolls has introduced a range of talking dolls aimed at helping African children stay in touch with their heritage. Pictured is Ama -- a "bubbling dynamic girl" whose "dream is to be a doctor someday," says the company's website. Ama speaks the Ghanaian languages of Twi, Ga, Ewe and Krobo. London (CNN) -- Raising their family in London, Nigerians Chris and Ada Ngoforo were keen for their children to stay in touch with their West African heritage. But the couple became concerned that their three young daughters didn't speak any Igbo, one of Nigeria's ethnic languages. "We thought amongst ourselves what we can do to actually help them to learn Igbo more," says Chris Ngoforo. This desire to encourage their children to connect with their roots, coupled with an increasing frustration with the difficulty in finding black dolls that resonated with their daughters, led the entrepreneurial couple to take matters into their hands. What started as a way of helping their daughters engage with their heritage quickly became a business opportunity. Soon after, the couple launched their own range of toys, called Rooti Dolls, programmed to speak in several native African languages and promote positive self-images. "We observed that over 90% of children born or living in the diaspora and millions in Africa do not speak or understand their mother tongues," says Ngoforo. "Our research made us understand that the reason for this is not because our children don't want to learn their mother tongues, but more because there are not many essential tools that can easily be both educational and fun at the same time." So far, the couple has produced a range of 12 dolls from different African countries. Each one can speak a combination of languages, and each one has her own story. Amongst them, there's Nina, a "vibrant girl" with Nigerian parents, who "loves watching Nollywood" and can interact in the Nigerian languages of Igbo, Yoruba, Hausa, and Ibibio; there's Ama, a "bubbling dynamic girl" whose "dream is to be a doctor someday," and can speak the Ghanaian languages of Twi, Ga, Ewe and Krobo; and there's also Keza, with parents from Zimbabwe and Zambia. She "loves adventures, reading and listening to beautiful music" and can communicate in Shona, Ndebele, Bemba, and Nyanja. Ngoforo says the toys, which come in different shades of skin color, are designed to break down stereotypes and to provide a more accurate representation of black people. "Over the years my wife and I have found it extremely hard finding real black dolls that can truly connect with our little daughters," he says. "The dolls out there in the market are nothing close to the real image of a black child in terms of features and other attributes -- they are either too thin, too light or chiseled-faced, and even the complexions of most of the dolls are kind of whitewashed," says Ngoforo. "The unfortunate effect of this stereotypical misrepresentation is a case of low self-esteem among black children who have been directly or indirectly made to believe less in themselves as a black child. They have been made to believe that you have to look like a white doll to be accepted as beautiful or even good." Debbie Behan Garrett, author of "The Definitive Guide to Collecting Black Dolls," says that black dolls have changed a lot over the years. In the early days of black dolls, she explains, many of them were negative characterizations with exaggerated facial features, including protruding eyes, broader-than-normal noses and accentuated lips that were often painted red. These dolls frequently maintained a posture of servitude as butlers or "mammies." "Today's black dolls have evolved from negative caricatures to play-scale representations of haute couture fashion models and other positive images of babies, toddlers and adult black people," says Garrett. She adds, however, that while today's dolls are more positive representations, "a lack of black dolls is a constant, as black-doll manufacture is often a second thought for those in the business of producing dolls in their image." But for Garrett, access to dolls can only achieve so much in terms of promoting a positive self image. "In addition to a black child owning dolls and other playthings that positively reflect their image, exposure to literature, art and other positive images will aid in the development of a healthy cultural awareness and appreciation," she says. https://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/dam/assets/130307135739-queens-of-africa-4-rooti-vertical-gallery.jpg "The comics, books and animation stories is the medium we use to enlighten and educate children on our history and culture," says Okoya. That was the inspiration behind the Queens of Africa project, an educational initiative developed by Nigerian entrepreneur Taofick Okoya. Using a mix of dolls, books, comics and music, Queens of Africa is aiming to help children in Nigeria and beyond to identify and appreciate their culture. "The crucial part of the formative years of children is between four-nine years," says Okoya." This is the time to load them with valuable information that they can draw on as adults." Similarly to the Ngoforos, Okoya's foray into the business was inspired by his family. Some five years ago, he went into an upmarket Lagos store to buy a doll as a birthday present for his young niece, but left disappointed. "I wanted to buy her something that would be quite encouraging or instrumental in her development," he says. "I realized that they had an array of different dolls but none of them were black and they were rather pricey." That gave Okoya food for thought and after some initial research, he decided to launch the Queens of Africa black dolls, each one representing different tribes in the continent. Later on, he decided to expand the project by launching a series of fun and educational books, songs and cartoons based on the dolls' characters. "The dolls will help the Nigerian/African [children] be better people because they would be proud and confident in who they are as a race," says Okoya. "The comics, books and animation stories is the medium we use to enlighten and educate children on our history and culture." Garett says that exposure to this kind of information can help African children learn about their roots, as well as proudly pass on their heritage to future generations. "It is imperative for African or any non-white child to possess or have access to playthings that reflect their image positively," she says. 29 Comments: Kada • 3 months ago − Not keen on the straight hair...but still those dolls have a real Educational goal and are definetly more Proportionated than Barbie thinghy Belinda Contague • 3 months ago − If you want your children to speak your language, stay in your native country or teach them yourself. My in-laws have complained for 17 years that my boy does not speak Spanish. Why would he? We live in America. You never heard my Great Grandmother complaining that I can't speak Romany and she was not foolish enough to expect me to either. You want everything the same, stay were you are. You move to another country, you better know that everything will be different, including the children you raise there. I was reading the story, and found this old update. Former Governors wife Loses Divorce case September 11, 2011 . . .As for child support and custody claims, Prince Audu challenged the paternity of the third child which was conceived about 4 months before the quarrel manifested. Audu claimed that his suspicion that his was had been cheating on him up to the point of getting pregnant from a lover is strong. Despite her protestations, the court finally issued an order compelling Mrs Audu to submit the child (a girl) for DNA test to prove paternity. The DNA report sighted by elombah.com says: "The alleged father is excluded as the biological father of the tested child. This conclusion is based on the non-matching alleles observed at the loci listed above with a PI equal to 0. The alleged father lacks the genetic markers that must be contributed to the child by the biological father. The probability of paternity is 0%." (see the DNA certificate below) Sources say the test result shocked Audu - the child was not his! Based on that, Audu has gone ahead to request paternity test for the two older children from Aisha (two boys). . . .American lawyers say Mrs. Audu remains married to Prince Audu since the court specifically suggested that she should go back to Nigeria to get a divorce there, especially as evidence in court showed that she was able to get divorce in Nigerian courts from her two previous marriages (one to one Mr. Lawal). This however is a delicate position, legal experts say. It means that Mrs. Audu is caught up in a tight position where she cannot remarry, as she remains married to Audu, and will be committing adultery if she lives with other men. Sources also say Mrs. Audu has recently converted to Christianity and is even said to have established a Church of her own in Maryland. Another significant implication is that Mrs. Audu would now have to find somewhere else to divorce her husband, starting with Nigeria as the best jurisdiction. Further, the decision of the court rejecting her petition means that she is not entitled to the millions of dollars she had expected by way of alimony and property distribution. . . .At the hearing, both parties introduced several documents into evidence to substantiate its side of the case. Audu introduced photographs of his former wife (Habiba), including one that shows Aisha in the same picture as Habiba who bore 5 grown children for Audu. The court was surprised when Aisha claimed she never met Habiba. A photo showing her together with Habiba who wore her wedding ring in the photo, seemed to have disturbed the court greatly and raised doubts as to Aisha's credibility. . . .Legal pundits insist Mrs. Aisha Audu, has certainly lost a lot of grounds. Mutual contacts say she lost the support of several friends. "For instance, initially, many of Audu's friends had tried to prevail on him to find a way to reach an amicable settlement and even reconcile with Aisha. But most of them gave up the effort to reconcile them when they realized that Aisha had indeed gotten pregnant from another man while married to Audu, as evidenced in the paternity test", elombah.com was told. "Why did Aisha rush to the American court when she ought to have known that Audu might probably challenge paternity", a friend asked rhetorically. Adding that "a paternity challenge is actually the most significant defense a man has to a child support petition in America." Though he said Audu had admitted that even though he suspected his wife to be cheating on him, he might never have gone public with the matter on his own. But when forced to the court in America, there was nothing left to protect and he had to demonstrate that his wife had been a "bad wife". Sources close to Mrs Audu say she actually considers the court ruling a victory. But if she goes ahead to ask the court for a reconsideration, the end of this long drawn family battle will not end soon. https://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=173221119422954 |
