EducationRe: Hnd Is Better Than Bsc by ishmael(op): 2:38pm On Apr 13, 2006
Hostepper, lets not be certificate crazy!! We have it on record that HND graduates have done better and are still doing better than degree holders in many establishments in nigeria. You cannot use the number of years spent in school to acquire a certificate to judge its quality. But if u want to go by that, in Nigeria you spend a minimum of 5 years to obtain HND, 5 years to obtain a BTech or BEng and 4 years to get a Bsc or BA. If u are to judge by number of years it means the HND is better or has more quality than BA and Bsc and equivalent to BTech and BEng. I need very good reasons from you to prove me wrong oo.
EducationHnd Is Better Than Bsc by ishmael(op): 6:13pm On Apr 12, 2006
HND is a better and more quality qualification than Bsc because while doing HND you acquire both practical and theoretical skills than those who do Bsc programs. This is true especially in courses like Accountancy, Statistics, computer science, marketing, building technology, quantity surveying and architectural technology. If u feel it's not true give us good reasons why its not true, because i'm still of the opinion that HND graduates are what Nigeria needs presently for economic and technological growth and advancement. I need answers from you to prove me otherwise.

EducationRe: What Is The Difference Between Hnd And Bsc/ba In Nigeria? by ishmael(op): 9:05am On Mar 31, 2006
In the UK and scotland HND courses last for just 2 years while BSC/BA programs last for 3 years. There is a clear distinction between HND and BSc/BA in the UK and scotland; the HND is taken as the 2nd year or part 2 of a BSC/BA program. After bagging HND there you can proceed to the 3rd year of the BSC/BA program or 2nd year depending on ur HND grade. In Nigeria, there is a difference between BTech/BEng and BSC/BA. You get a BTech/BEng degree after 5 years while the BSC/BA degree is a 4-year degree. To get HND also in Nigeria you spend 5 solid years like the BTech /BEng. So now, what is the difference in quality between HND and BSC/BA, HND and BTech/BEng in Nigeria? Secondly, what is the equivalent of a BSC/BA and BTech/BEng degrees in Nigeria? Please i need answers from you.
EducationWhat Is The Difference Between Hnd And Bsc/ba In Nigeria? by ishmael(op): 12:25pm On Mar 29, 2006
There is a clear diffference between HND and BSc/BA in UK and Scotland. HND in UK and Scotland are 2 years programs while BSc/BA programs last for 3 years. There, after your HND which is assumed to be the samething as a 200 level BSc/BA, you can proceed to do a BSc/BA by joining them in the final year (300 levels) or start from 200 levels again; depending on your HND grade anyway. Now, what is the difference between HND and BSc/BA in nigeria? I know the difference between BTech/BEng and BSc. I want to know the difference between HND and BSc/BA. And secondly what is the equivalent of a university Degree in Nigeria? I need your views please.

Lexy247, u are a disgrace to mankind. you dont need to tell me , i know u did not do well in ur HND dat was why u went back to do a degree program. Big Shame on you. I know of so many people like u. You graduated with a pass HND, na wa for u. Thank God u bribed ur way into UNILAG to do a degree program;and u equally bribed ur way thru to get a degree. We know wetin dey happen 4 UNILAG very well. So u dont even know the difference btw HND engineering and a uni degree in engineering? Pls dont put graduates of YabaTech to shame. If u had done well in ur HND, probably u would ve gone to do a PGD and MSC. Let me not hear u talk on this issue again becos u,re not intelligent enough to contribute anything good here. And as for u Ondogi, u lack respect. I dont blame u, ur parents must ve spoilt u from the onset. Becos they must ve bribed or bought JAMB scores 4 u to be able to go into the university. What course did u read anyway?

EducationRe: B. Sc. vs HND: An Unsettled Case? by ishmael(m): 4:26pm On Mar 21, 2006
Bros, I hail u all oo!! lets not rely on those guys in the National assembly oo. They are only after issues that will bring out money from the federation account into their Ghana-must-go bags. The plight of polytechnics and the discrimination of HND holders in nigeria is well known to them, but that will not bring money into their pockets at the end of the day; so they will never move a motion nor discuss about it. For long now ASUP members have been talking about National polytechnics commission; has it been created? Have they granted polytechnics the go ahead to run post graduate programs? Have they removed the disparity between poly and uni lecturers? NO is the answer to all these questions. They only move motions, argue and sometimes even fight and throw chairs at each other on issues that will never move the country forward but will make them become rich either through bribery or the other way. Dont mind them, we shall get there soon with or without them.
EducationRe: B. Sc. vs HND: An Unsettled Case? by ishmael(m): 9:23pm On Mar 20, 2006
donbrown thanx jo. I dont blame them, i blame nigerian government for insensitivity to technical and technological education for a long time. I think they are coming back to their senses now. I still hold the opinion that a Bsc may look bigger or superior to HND when pronounced or called  but looks smaller and inferior to HND academically and technically. What is happening in nigeria is that a cabal or a group of employers already know that when HND and Bsc guys sit for any exams or test, a greater proportion of successful guys hold HND and when put in the same level in the same office the difference is always clear. The HND guys are turned into tutors, who teach the Bsc guys those things they really need to work with which they were not opportuned to learn in the universities. This situation really bothered men that belong to that cabal (employers with Bsc) and as such they decided to frustrate HND holders so that they will no longer disgrace and embarrass their fellow colleagues with Bsc again. But it won't work again in nigeria, we are beginning to realise that development of this country physically and economically lies in the hands of technologist (HND holders). Whether you get your Bsc from where ever university or what ever university, i still hold my personal opinion that one of the best qualifications that have proved itself to be among the best in the world is the Nigerian Higher National Diploma (HND). take it or leave it anybody!! Try and get HND and see for yourself any Bsc holder. Thank God a lot of guys with HND have gone in to do the so called Bsc programs, ask them they will tell you the difference. Bsc is just a name jo!! Most people with Bsc are just empty vessels that make the loudest noise, they dont know any thing. Thank God things are beginning to change now in Nigeria.
EducationRe: Hnd Vs Bsc, B. Eng, Etc by ishmael(m): 9:11pm On Mar 03, 2006
Hotstepper, answer my question oo, what do u mean by HND and Bsc are not the same? is it that HND is higher than Bsc or Bsc is higher than HND. Pls note that HND in nigeria is different from HND in UK or in scotland. HND is a 5 year program in nigeria while many degree programs are less than 5 years. But in uk HND is 2 years while Bsc is 3 years.we are talking about HND and BSc in nigeria now, tell us what the difference is in terms of the course work and quality of knowledge and skills acquired and not the name of the degree acquired.
EducationRe: Hnd Vs Bsc, B. Eng, Etc by ishmael(m): 8:58pm On Mar 03, 2006
Hotstepper, what is the issue again? Do u have HND or Bsc let me know now oo!!
EducationRe: Hnd Vs Bsc, B. Eng, Etc by ishmael(m): 7:48pm On Mar 02, 2006
I have HND in statistics and have been opportuned to discuss with guys that hold BSc in statistics or mathematics and computer science. I discovered that there were so many courses and their applications that they did not do in school (university). I made fun of them during my NYSC orientation in Lagos. I told many of them to go back to school and complete the course. I called them unqualified and incompetent statisticians and mathematicians. Yes! some of them did not use computers in their Bsc maths, stats and computer courses, yet they claim they are mathematicians, statisticians and computer scientists. Tell me any where in the world where u get a Bsc in mathematics or statistics or comp science without good computing knowledge and skills? It is only in Nigerian universities. The polytechnics are trying in nigeria. They give u full computer practicals in computer science and statistics(ND/HND). That is why i,m able to work as a system administrator in one of the biggest companies in the country, but i hold HND in statistics. Most of my guys with Bsc in mathematics/statistics or computer science always have one excuse or the other to give; some will say we dont have computers in my school or the Lecturer did not teach us. Check the course curriculum for ND/HND to see for yourself, u will see how these courses are structured. U can get one from NBTE kaduna if u wish. Dont compare HND graduates in nigeria with those in UK or US who spent just 2 years to get HND. There is a clear distinction. U can also go online to see the course curriculum for HND programs in UK and US, it is very different from ours in Nigeria. Thank you and be aware!!
EducationRe: Hnd Vs Bsc, B. Eng, Etc by ishmael(m): 7:35pm On Mar 02, 2006
I know most of those Bsc guys dont know this!!. HND is gradually fading out or has been made to be inferior to university degrees around the world, especially in the UK. This is because u now spend just 2 years to get HND in UK and 3 years to get a Bsc. But in nigeria HND is equivalent or even more than a BSc because u spend 5 years (4 academic years and 1 year industrial training) before u graduate with HND. Take a look at the course curriculum for HND programs u will find out that the credit hours is equal or greater than that of so many degree programs in nigeria. I think we should be talking of credit load now and not Bsc /HND or university/polytechnic. In the UK and america most HND courses are 2 years programs while degree courses are 3 years, that is why holders of HND there go into the 2nd or 3rd year of a degree program before going to do a postgraduate course. But here in Nigeria the difference is obvious, HND is a 5 years program while most degree programs are less than 5 years. The credit load is what we should be talking about now, and not just the HND or Bsc. I was able to get admission into a postgraduate school in one of the UK universities with my HND certificate. I was asked to send my transcript which i did. they went through it and discovered that i had done more than they expected,my credit load was equivalent to that of a Bsc program so i was given the course. Those who hold Bsc should not look down at those with HND, i bet you, if you meet or work with some people with HND you will see the technical skills in them. Finally if HND is inferior to BSc the number of years spent to acquire it should be reduced from 5 years to 2 or 3 years in nigeria, else HND is equivalent or greater than a BSC in nigeria. Be aware!!!

Most american and British universities lay emphasis on credit load and not HND/Bsc or polytechnic/college/university. I think nigerians should equally apply that principle. I was able to get a PG program with my HND in one of the British universities. Ofcourse they saw my transcript and were convinced that my HND was worth more than what they offer there in the UK, becos HND holders in the UK spend just 2 years while we do 5 years here in nigeria. That is why HND holders in the UK go into 2nd or 3rd year Bsc programs for progression. We hold more than that in nigeria. Be aware!! please
