EducationRe: The Best University In Nigeria? by ishmael(m): 6:03pm On Jul 26, 2006
What and what have you people in UI discovered or improved in your course of research? All these na stories. We've not heard of any meaningful result coming from there. We see UI graduates everyday, and they are not better than graduates of AAU Ekpoma, IMSU, ABSU and even Kogi state uni. (Sorry becos these are new uni compared to UI).They are the same thing jo. Lets not decieve ourselves. Graduates from most of the 1st generation universities live by past glories.

Swimming is not compulsory. You will spend most of your time doing military training in NDA kaduna. You will go to Onne in PH a month or 2 before passing out. I dont think swimming is compulsory becos so many people joined without even knowing what swimming is and they are still in the NAVY.
CareerRe: Why This Discrimination Between B.Sc & HND? by ishmael(m): 5:27pm On Jul 26, 2006
HH, you are right oo, but abolishing polytechnic education in nigeria may not solve the technological problems on ground. Let government sit down and think very well on nigeria educational policies especially as it affects polytechnics. what baffles me most is that poly graduates have done well and better in some areas than some uni graduates upon all the discriminations placed on them. Just as you said, it all depends on the individual and not the HND or Bsc, or the school you attended that matters; people should be allowed to prove themselves rather than occupying positions by virtue of a Bsc or HND.

Zebudaya, in the military you are suppose to live in the barracks; that is where they provide accomodation for serving personnels, although in some few cases like in the Navy and Airforce they have quarters outside the barracks where personnels can live. It is not compulsory that you shld live in the barracks, you can decide to get a rented apartment outside the barracks, you will be paid aaccomodation allowance which will not be up to what u paid in renting your apartment, that is why most military officers prefer to live within the barracks; and most importantly the security you get in the barracks.
Loluuu, my father is a retired Airforce officer; retired just last year. i attended airforce primary school, Most of my classmates and friends are serving officers in the Navy, Airforce and Army as Navy Lt. Flt. Lt and captains. I narrowly missed going into the academy (NDA). I did my NYSC in NAF pay & Acct Group in Ikeja, so i know much about their pay and allowances. And presently i work in a bank that military officers use for their salaries, so i see what they pay them every month. Although i could nt make it into the military as a trained soldier, i'm a born soldier!!
Jobs/VacanciesRe: Nigerian Navy Recruiting Graduates! by ishmael(m): 5:34pm On Jul 25, 2006
sub Lt. which is equivalent to Lt. in the Army and flying Officer in the Airforce is the starting rank for all officers that go thru short service, and their pay is around 46k to 50k. Except for medical Doctors, nurses and other medical officers who earn almost 20 to 30k extra medical allowance approved by UN/WHO for military medical personnels. But mind you accomodation is free, no light and water bills to be paid at the end of the month or year. If you add up these the pay may even be better than what some big companies in nigeria pay their staff. And finally you earn respect from people. It is worth trying.
EducationRe: The Best University In Nigeria? by ishmael(m): 4:29pm On Jul 25, 2006
We dony have any thing like "best university" in nigeria for now. Education especially higher education in public institutions is in shambles already; whether university , polytechnic or college of education, they are nothing to write home about. I can only agree that some of the newly established private universities might bring a change to the higher educational system in nigeria, before we can now have a "best university" in nigeria. All those public universities like UNN, UI, Ife, ABU, UNILAG, UNIPORT, UNIBEN, RSUST, AAU Ekpoma, UNIZIK, FUTO, UNIJOS, FUTA, ATBU, FUTY, UNICAL, UNIUYO, UNIILORIN and a long list of public universities that i cannot mention all live by past glory. The euipments, lecture materials, books and even the Lecturers/professors themselves are obsolete and archaic, so the students too learn obsolete and archaic things. NO UNIVERSITY IN NIGERIA CAN CLAIM TO BE THE BEST FOR NOW, especially public universities.
PoliticsRe: Gen Sani Abacha: Number 419 by ishmael(m): 7:33am On Jul 25, 2006
Dats a good number. Abacha is still my mentor, i love him. Atleast he's better than the man on the throne now. Abi na lie?
EducationRe: ND Holder: HND or 100 Level at University? by ishmael(m): 7:54pm On Jul 24, 2006
soonest polytechnics and HND holders will have course to smile. Let Govt listen to ASUP and meet their demands, you will see.
CareerRe: Mathematical Sciences: Where Is The Job? by ishmael(op): 10:37am On Jul 24, 2006
Why should they work as accountants? Dont they have their own kind of job to do?
CareerRe: Why This Discrimination Between B.Sc & HND? by ishmael(m): 4:04pm On Jul 21, 2006
Well, lets see what help will come from SEUN. The guy may be willing to help us.
EducationRe: Hnd Is Better Than Bsc by ishmael(op): 1:53pm On Jul 21, 2006
HND-holder na gode!!
CareerRe: Why This Discrimination Between B.Sc & HND? by ishmael(m): 1:50pm On Jul 21, 2006
Yes o, it will be better. But Seun does not have HND and he has never spoken in favour of HND holders and polytechnics before. I wonder if it will work sha.
CareerRe: Should HND Holders Go To Hell? by ishmael(m): 1:31pm On Jul 21, 2006
yes o, everything in nigeria educational system is obsolete. We really need a review of our academic syllabus.
CareerRe: Should HND Holders Go To Hell? by ishmael(m): 12:46pm On Jul 21, 2006
Yes oo, let all of them go back to lecture and do research in the universities. I wonder why the like coming to work in the industries with HND holders when they know that they dont have industrial/practical skills. Anyway sha they are planning to tap some skills from us. You know say we get both the academic skills and industrial/practical skills which they lack. Let them beg us to teach them; afterall we want to move our country forward, so we will teach them if only they will be ready to learn. You know most of them are lazy especially the Engineers!!
CareerRe: Why This Discrimination Between B.Sc & HND? by ishmael(m): 12:28pm On Jul 21, 2006
I have already submitted myself already. I dont know of other HND holders. But they better do oo becos it is for the good of all of us.
EducationRe: Hnd Is Better Than Bsc by ishmael(op): 10:42am On Jul 21, 2006
yes oo, HND-holder i agree with you. Some HND certificates are better than some Bsc certificates when you weigh some of the owners or holders of the certificates. In short some HND holders are sharper and more technical and skillful than many Bsc holders.
CareerRe: Why This Discrimination Between B.Sc & HND? by ishmael(m): 5:31pm On Jul 20, 2006
Please o, you people shld try for us. We are putting hope on you and other good-to-go HND graduates like you. It will surely come to pass, amen.
CareerRe: Should HND Holders Go To Hell? by ishmael(m): 5:23pm On Jul 20, 2006
Bosy, i like wat that company did or is doing. That is wat other employers like banks should be doing and not using paper certificate/qualification to judge. Prove ur HND or Bsc let them see; that is it oo.
CareerRe: Should HND Holders Go To Hell? by ishmael(m): 5:19pm On Jul 20, 2006
Yes o, you people should work on it on time. What does the BEng guy know about practical engineering work that they are employing him to come and teach or lecture poly students? Its abnormal i beg. How can someone who does not know how to use a lathe machine in the workshop teach people who are supposed to be taught how to use such machines? Its not possible. Let Govt and polytechnics stop employing theoretical engineers as lecturers, we dont need their services in our polytechnics for now.
CareerRe: Salary Package For Nigerian Navy by ishmael(m): 4:28pm On Jul 20, 2006
You will start as a sub Lt. which is equivalent to a Lt. in the Army and Flying Officer in the Airforce. The starting pay depends on ur profession, but sub Lt.'s earn like 45k to 50k every month. But if u,re a medical personnel like nurses, Lab tech and Radiologist you may earn like 65k to 70k as a sub Lt. Mind u Medical Doctors begin as Navy Lt. which is equivalent to a Captain in the Army and Flt. Lt. in the Airforce and their salary is almost double of wat sub Lt.'s earn every month.
CareerRe: Why This Discrimination Between B.Sc & HND? by ishmael(m): 3:35pm On Jul 20, 2006
Something could still be done about it. Afterall Technology and science go together. Let science alone move itself forward without Technology lets see. Its very very impossible. Na government i blame for all these; they dont even know what science is not to talk of Technology.
CareerRe: Should HND Holders Go To Hell? by ishmael(m): 3:08pm On Jul 20, 2006
Let something be done about this, because right now if u are employed with HND to lecture in any polytechnic in nigeria they employ u as an instructor while the Bsc holder is employed as an asst. lecturer. This is part of the discrimination we are talking about. Charity they say begins at home. Why should polytechnics do such a thing to its products? After all no university will employ any HND holder as a lecturer except if he/she has a postgraduate qualification. And mind you the heads of most polytechnics in nigeria did not pass thru the polytechnic system. Bros, there should be total overhaul in the polytechnic system to bring before sanity can be attained else polytechnics and their products will continue to deteriorate because they will no longer acquire the technical skills they were established to.
CareerRe: Should HND Holders Go To Hell? by ishmael(m): 12:54pm On Jul 20, 2006
But let polytechnics be allowed to run masters programs since HND is just an equivalent of a first degree, this will make most HND holders to still be technically good especially in the fields of science, technology and engineering. Having MTech or Msc from a polytechnic should equally qualify one to be a lecturer in the polytechnic since the person has the technical skills that need to be taught to the students. I tell you 95% of polytechnic lecturers passed thru universities and not polytechnic; this also should be looked into because they are already making polytechnic education to look like the university type because they lack the practical aspects of their professions and which the poly students need seriously.
EducationRe: Nigerian Graduate Of Those Days And Today: Who Is Better? by ishmael(op): 6:57pm On Jul 19, 2006
Some graduates of today are better than graduates of those old days most especially in the field of Computing and Information Technology. Dont u think so?
CareerRe: Why This Discrimination Between B.Sc & HND? by ishmael(m): 5:19pm On Jul 19, 2006
I'm talking of someone with a distinction or upper credit in computer science for instance who wants to do MSc computer science in the university; why on earth must he do a PGD in computer science first? Whereas some people with second class lower BSc computer science degree will be admitted directly into the MSc computer course.
CareerRe: Should HND Holders Go To Hell? by ishmael(m): 5:03pm On Jul 19, 2006
I trust u. How was ur trip? Hope u really had a nice time with those wealthy HND guys u met there? Any news about allowing polytechnics to run MSc/MTech and Phd programs? Wish to meet with you face to face, u must be va very wonderful and interesting person.
CareerRe: Why This Discrimination Between B.Sc & HND? by ishmael(m): 3:29pm On Jul 19, 2006
If polytechnics can run and award PG Diploma then they should be empowered to run MTech/MSc as well as Phd Degrees. After all most polytechnics in nigeria have Phd holders as lecturers, and they have the equipments, labs, workshops, computer center and library to run masters and doctorate degree programs. This will stop or reduce the rate at which polytechnic graduates with HND go for a PGD before doing MSc or MTech. Imagine HND distinction and HND upper credit will have to do a PGD first before doing MSc or MTech. That issue should be addressed urgently i beg. HND-holder pls help us fight it out oo!!
CareerRe: Should HND Holders Go To Hell? by ishmael(m): 3:08pm On Jul 19, 2006
Hnd-holder where u go since? You just abandon me. Hope all is well sha? Any way sha any body wey get HND wey wan go hell fit begin go now oo; but me i still dey here and things must change.
CareerRe: Why This Discrimination Between B.Sc & HND? by ishmael(m): 2:41pm On Jul 19, 2006
Let polytechnics start running MTech/MSc and Phd programs first, that is when we will agree with all the noise government have been making about Technological/Technical education. I,m tired of reading their stories becos they talk more and act less.

CareerRe: Should HND Holders Go To Hell? by ishmael(m): 6:08pm On Jul 18, 2006
My brother i have seen situations where HND holders denounce polytechnics becos of inferiority complex; this is one of the reasons why the society and employers alike think that HND holders are not as good and sound as their Bsc counterparts. A friend and classmate of mine who graduated from a polytechnic was in the midst of other university graduates, he felt so inferior that he told them lies that he too graduated from one of the universities in nigeria. But why on earth would i deny my Alma-mater? A place where i was properly trained? A place where i got all the skills that i'm using to work 2day!! No, i cant do that. I once had a discussion with a friend in Lagos then, just after my NYSC; she was so happy and excited the way we were gisting and asked where i graduated from? I happily told her i graduated from a polytechnic, but she was suprised and did not believe me. You know wat she said? That i dont talk and behave like a polytechnic graduate, that i was just joking; cos she herself graduated from LASU. So she refused to believe me. My response to her was "Is it only people that attended uni that are intelligent and sharp? If u have been thinking so then u,re wrong cos a lot of us from the polytechnics are good if not better than most of you from the universities". At the end of the day she agreed with me that HND holders are as good as Bsc holders. Pls HND holders should feel proud to tell people that they are products of nigerian polytechnics. After all our HND in nigeria is higher and different from that of UK and other countries; We spend 5 good years to get HND in nigeria while in UK it is just 2 years and in Ghana it is 3 years. Pls o!! feel proud to tell people that u are a Nigerian polytechnic graduate.
NYSCRe: NYSC: Is Kaduna A Good Place To Serve? by ishmael(m): 5:39pm On Jul 18, 2006
Josboy4lif and Alheri una weldone oo. Truely Makarfi has really tried, Kaduna is really a peaceful place to dwell now. My prayers is that it should continue like dat, and who ever is taking over from him should continue from where he (Makarfi) stops. Atleast Kaduna is better and peaceful than onitsha and some places in the niger-delta.
