ekt_bear: What programming courses do stats students take in the UK and Nigeria?I don't know how it is now in nigeria cos i left undergraduate school long ago. I attended both poly and uni. Some CS courses that stats and CS students did together in the poly that i can remember are: intro to CS, Basic programming, Fortran programming, COBOL programming, and computer application packages. The maths & stats courses are: intro to stats, descriptive stats, probability theory, logic & linear algebra, trig & analytical geometry, stat theory, calculus, ops research, etc. These are the ones i can remember. In the uni i can also remember maths, stats, and CS students did some courses together. Some of them are courses like basic, and fortran programming, mathematical modelling, mathematical programming, statistics for scientists & engineers, mathematical mthds, set theory, prob theory, calculus, algebra, numerical analysis, etc. Except if the syllabus in naija has changed. I think I've cracked my brain enough to remember these. |
ekt_bear: that isn't how it works in the US at most schools. You start taking computing courses as a CS major pretty early...freshman year.In nigeria statistics students do a lot of computing while CS students do a lot of maths and stats courses, both in the university and polytechnic. UK schools do same too. I really need to find out about the US system. |
ekt_bear: I don't know the mandatory courses for those degrees in Nigeria, but I do know what they look like in say the US. And there is no more overlap between CS and statistics in those places than there is between CS and physics.Every where and even in the US Stats and Comp Sci take similar courses at undergraduate level. In Nigeria, statistics, mathematics, and comp science students do almost the same thing from 100 to 200 levels, with differences surfacing from 300 levels. |
Johndoe100: No one seems to see the problem:U just said my mind. It's even unconstitutional for the army to keep them in their custody. Let them hand them over to police to charge them to court, that's if it can be established and proven that they have committed any crime. |
jerseyboy: It is comming to the South. SOON. They are getting closerIt's not funny bro! I learnt they're already in Edo state. We need God now more than ever to protect us all. These terrorists should not be allowed to go past Okpella pls. They should be checkmated on time. |
ekt_bear: Statistics isn't really close to CS at all. I don't see what the argument for it being closer than physics.Just say u don't know. Do a little research and find out the courses statistics students and computer science students offer. Then find out if there is a correlation. |
elviszzz: Go for statistics bro,its needed in every organisation. Am a graduate of statistics, never planned to read that but as a result of not wanting to stay at home and doing jamb year after year I had no option than to take statistic cos it was d only option offered by d university to me.I wanted to do engineering or computer science but my cut off was low for both. Today I work as a statistician in a university.I have no regrets on statistics,my testimony has been from one level of glory to another.God bless u bro. |
tunnamaniah: Nairalanders, i am to study statistics in the university, pls just advice me on how to b successful as a statisticianRead hard and play less. You must be good in mathematics, statistics, computing and writing skills to become a competent statistician. |
Jon.Bee:And how does that now make me a northerner? I happen to school with ebira muslims in ABU zaria and i know them to be more fanatical than the hausas. I never said ebiras taught the hausas fanatism, but I'm not surprised someone here is accusing them of teaching the hausas fanatism based on their behaviours in ABU and BUK. @OP, u're not far from the truth. |
elimokhai: Physics is cool if you're ready to dedicate the next four years studying, as you must avoid "carry overs" due to the course outlines. having too many carry over when you don't actually have spaces for them in another session will surely lead to extension (extra year) peculiar to physics and chemistry department. I gained admission to study medicine in 2000, unfortunately in my 100L, i failed CHM112 out of the 21 courses offered for both first and second semester. couldn't proceed to 200L. had an option to either repeat 100L or proceed to 200L in the faculty of natural science, i chose to proceed, was therefore offered chemistry instead of biochemistry which i applied for. I had no option since i wanted to proceed to 200L, a decision I have never regret.Your view about statisticians is myopic. Statisticians design and analyze experiments in the biological sciences, medical sciences, physical sciences, pharmaceutical sciences, agric sciences, etc. yet u say they are not scientists? If they are not scientists, then one begins to wonder what ur definition of a scientist is. If Bsc Statistics is done in the faculty of sciences, in any of these departments: statistics or mathematics or mathematical sciences or maths & stats or maths & computer science; why then would u in ur own opinion say that statisticians are not scientists? |
tpia@:Your post is vague. I could nt waste my time to read it again, i have moved on tey tey. But i still need u to answer this question: " Southern Nigeria is made up of different ethnic groups; are all of them put together commonly called igbos?" |
Hotsophy: In terms of job opportunities, physics has a lot to offer than statistics. You're right, physics is more difficult than maths and stats put together. Physics is like engineering. In ABU, at times they don't graduate anybody not to talk of 2:1 or 1st class. |
duality: shooo!, my guy you mean you didn't see the long thread on this forum? maybe you should search for it. many nigerian graduates were in support; claiming to have applied; with their hard earned degree. trust me, non of those graduates studied trailer driving in school. i guess some may have studied computer science, and statistics etc etc. so my initial post still stands.I saw the thread but thought someone was just trying to make fun of the unemployed graduates in nigeria. Graduate truck drivers? Dem go soon start smoke igbo be dat, because that's what gives them the spirit and morale to drive in the night. Nigerian graduates don suffer. |
tpia@:Not true. Many northern minority tribes are different from hausa. Ebira, Igala, Idoma, Berom, Jukun, Gwari, etc are northerners but not hausas. Are all southerners igbos? |
duality: after all no be computer science graduates apply as trailer driver for Dangote cement? Are u very sure of this? Are u saying that people with their hard earned Bsc/HND actually applied to be truck or trailer drivers in dangote's company? I saw the advert but thought someone was just playing some games. Education is finished in nigeria. |
fineheart: My dear, Physics is it! However, if you are not strong in maths, please do not go near physics as mathematics is the language of physics and as such you will be frustrated in physics if you are poor in maths. Physics offers more opportunities than statistics. I studied physics myself and I am very happy I did.Are u in any way saying that u don't need to be good in mathematics to study statistics? |
okeyxyz: I'd say take the statistics. It would help sharpen your research & analytical skills and that's one skill that'll come in handy in this world of data & information. your work opportunities are infinite. Meanwhile you can do computer science/programming by the side. You "can't" regret it.You've said it all. |
moderatorr: best advice.Your not liking statistics or failing statistics does not mean that it is not related to computer science. Have u ever heard of computational statistics before? What about statistical computing? I'm sure if u knew their meanings u would not have posted what u posted here. For ur info most statisticians are good database administrators, while others are good in writing statistical algorithm and software development, apart from using statistical software packages to analyze complex data. |
Jon.Bee:u're off point. He's talking about fanatism and Ebira people. |
13volts: Add Boko Haram terrorism to their popular trade of thuggery and cultism. The FG must watch Okene. For those that school in ABU Zaria & BUK Kano will tell how the Ebiras & to a lesser extend Igalas practically spearheaded the fight against indecent dress code, clubbing & male - female access to each other campuses.U're very correct. They are more fanatical and unforgiving than the hausa and fulani muslims. They are always at the forefront in every islamic struggle on campus. They gave us so much trouble back then in ABU Samaru campus. |
jswags: Pls nairalanders , I am supposed to study computer science but now I am been offered to choose btw physics or statistics.. Pls which one should i go for. Pls i need ur advice pls wit reasons.Any of them is good. They are all related to computer science. You can do a masters in computer science after earning a Bsc in either physics or statistics. Studying statistics gives u the opportunity to work with application packages needed for statistical computing and data base applications. Physics on the other hand gives u the opportunity to learn about the electrical/electronic aspects of computers. |

Maxidoe: I don't know why people are this ignorant, how can any same literate compare and Ebira fanatic with a Hausa Islamic,am proudly Ebira,we may be violent, aggressive and confrontational but islamic extremism is not one of our bad traits.I called my people in Okene who said the perpetrators of last night's barbarism are not Ebiras,as the perpetrators spoke English with Hausa accent. Please let's not be ignorant our posts.Guy u don't need to defend them. Ebira muslims are more deadly and fanatical than hausa and fulani muslims. They are many in kaduna and some are boko haram members. Hausa or fulani muslim can forgive u, but not ebira muslim. |
excondido: these Ebira boys are even more fanatical than most hausa/fulaniU're correct. They are worse than the hausa and fulani people when it comes to islamic extremism. They play a major role in islamic fanatism in nigeria. |
Fashola, we want u to be our next president come 2015 (that is if there is still going to be an integral nigeria). If Fashola can work on Lagos +vely, he can possibly work on nigeria as a whole +vely. Atleast we have a better replacement for GEJ (PhD) from the south. |
Gabbysky: Look at d way u just recommend death to them, for what crime plz? Some of them are responsible family men ooo with huge needs to cater for children and other dependants, what other genuine means of livelihood would be available to most of these mostly "unschooled" youngmen. Mind you most of them have to put up d "Agbero" style to earn a living, it's not actually their lifestyle, get to know them better please. Oga Fash! Plz easy ooooo, ur laws don dey too much...Are u also saying that BH in the north should be allowed to continue simply because they and their families earn a living from there? Pls check out ur post again. |
Other prominent northern muslims should also come out publicly and condemn BH. This is a step to crushing them. |
Obiagu1: A Kenyan court recently ruled that secession movement is not criminal but political. What the nigerian constitution says about such moves is what matters, and not what kenyan constitution says. Sucession is criminal in nigeria. Who will declare it criminal is the question now, because the president, CDS, and COAS are all from the south. Will they support it? |
noblezone: It will be treated as "Treason" to broadcast this.who will declare such as a treasonable offence? Is it GEJ? Or is it the defence chief or Army chief? |
Why have they not announced it on AIT, NTA and Channels? |
This will give christians some hope and reason to believe that it's not all muslims that are in support of killing non-muslims. I love his courage. |
olivertwist: The bolded part is the bone of contention my brother. It's like asking a thief to sentence himself...That's exactly my point. I don't see that happening soon. |
